Well, we've booked our April trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, but it appears that we will probably have a death in the family sometime in the next couple of months. I bought cancellation insurance for one of the hotels when I booked, but declined it for the second segment because I wasn't expecting anything like this. And we bought our airline ticket through Southwest, and I can't remember if it's a refundable ticket (our email confirmation doesn't say). So I'm wondering if I should purchase third-party trip insurance. If so, can anyone recommend a good company? Thanks!

I have travel insurance for our HM through this (http://www.1earthtravelprotection.com/)company. They were super easy to work with. I think they might be brokers for different companies though. Ours is through Sirius.

If you have to cancel your Southwest flight, I believe the funds will remain avaiable for you to apply toward a future flight on Southwest. So the money won't be totally lost.

Sabrina - I did a little digging on Southwest's website, and I think you're right. Since I already have cancellation insurance on 3 out of 5 nights of the hotel, and there's no fee if we cancel the rental car, I'll just leave everything as is, and if we have to eat two hotel nights, it's no big deal.
