and I mean all out crying with tears, and tissues! Go ahead and list them here...
I am a sap, so I know there has been plenty of them, but for some reason I can't remember them now.
The only one I can think of is Beach Music by Pat Conroy. I remember sitting on the couch, finishing the book and just blubbering.
the first book that ever made me cry was "where the red fern grows"

A walk to remember made me bawl (even though i knew what happened in the end), and the first two Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants books (i know, kinda sappy, but there were some very touching moments in them).
Lots of other books ahve made me cry, but those I recall the most.

The Time Traveler's Wife. I was still crying after I put it down. DH walked in the room and was so worried about what was wrong! :o
Where The Red Fern Grows got me horribly, too. Even worse, we had to then watch the movie in class (6th grade). I was trying so hard not to cry in front of everyone!

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
This book was his deepest and most touching. Somehow he reached into the minds of the elderly and shared what it feels like to have a spouse dealing with Alzheimers.
But I cry about everything pretty much. I cried during church last Sunday!:o

The 2 most recent books that made me cry are The Time Traveler's Wife and My Sister's Keeper. Both of those had me full out sobbing!

I've never had a book that made my cry, but this was a topic at my old job and it makes me want to read some that you all have suggested.
At my old job, we would all exchange books to read on the train for our commute. The Notebook was passed around and I was the last one to read it. All four of my collegues said how they were crying on the train and people were looking at them. Not me, not even a welling up. I became the known as cold hearted. :p

Normally I don't cry over books but I was pretty weepy after reading Angelas Ashes. Probably because it was a true story.

The last book that made me cry was SUZANNE'S DIARY FOR NICHOLAS. I cried so much. I loved that James Patterson wrote it. I have almost all of his books and this love story was a great way show off his diverse writing styles.
Charlotte's Web made me cry when I was a kid. Who ever thought a spider dying would be so emotional.

I remember finishing "Gone with the Wind" and crying my eyes out.
I cried reading some of the WWII scenes in "Atonement," by Ian McEwan ( a wonderful book) and telling DH how lucky we were not to live in a time of war. Well, not a world way anyway.
If you are ever looking for a good cry, and especially if you are a mother or a daughter, read "Eva Moves the Furniture" by Margot Livesay. My whole book club cried.

There have only been two books that have made me cry.
1. Where the Red Fern Grows
2. Clan of the Cave Bear
There have been others that upset me, but these two have just gotten under my skin and even today when I reread them I bawl. :o

I'm sure I've gotten a little teary at many, but the one that had me sobbing, literally sobbing! at the table was The Time Travelers Wife.
I can only remember two books making me cry, and they've already been mentioned:
Where the Red Fern Grows - I remember hiding under the covers crying my eyes out as I read it because I didn't want my parents to worry about me.
My Sister's Keeper - This had me literally sobbing for a full half-hour after I finished the book. I called my friend who had recommended it to me and gave her an earful for not warning me in advance. She then recommended The Time Traveller's Wife, which I have not had the courage to pick up yet!

I know there are several books that have made me cry through the years, but I'm having a hard time remembering them. Books that I know made me cry in more than one place:
- Sophie's Choice (I never saw the movie, but the book is very intense)
- The Women's Room
- Exodus
- Marjorie Morningstar

I cried for hours reading My Sister's Keeper.
I cry with almost every Nicholas Sparks book that I read.
I can't think of the others right now, but there have been many.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Little Women.... that bit about the Valley of the Shadow gets me every time.
Then again, I cry at everything...including (as mentioned in this thread) The Time Traveler's Wife, The Kite Runner, and (although I hated it), My Sister's Keeper.

I made the mistake of reading The Dogs of Babel as I was coaching cheerleading practice (the girls were running to warm up). By the time they finished, I was a mess. They were all worried that something had happened to me, which was cute.

Hey -- I read Where the Red Fern Grows in 5th grade, and I finished it during a study period in class, sobbing my eyes out. The boy sitting next to me was all flummoxed. Hee.
I'm a big sap, but recently I've cried at The Time Traveler's Wife and Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon (it's better if you've read Outlander first, but I've reread it several times and sob every time.).

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden made me SOB when I finished it. I think I was probably around 14 at the time and I was shocked and found it depressing that the girl wasn't cured of schizophrenia by the end of the book.
More recently, Good Grief (I can't remember the author). It is about a woman whose husband dies after only a few years of marriage. I kept thinking about DH dying and I ended up crying every time I picked up the book.

I was on the subway when I finished Marley & Me. People were all staring at me. Somebody asked me if I was all right; tears were just streaming down my face so hard.
People have mentioned a lot of other books that have affected me like this - Bridge to Terabithia, My Sister's Keeper, Beach Music, Prayer for Owen Meany - but nobody's mentioned either Bag of Bones or The Stand, both by Stephen King. There were moments in each that made me SOB. In both, there was a death that actually made me throw the book across the room in frustration, anger, and sadness. I just cried for ages.

I cried like a baby while reading Marley and Me. Originally I bought the book because not only am I a dog owner/lover, but I'm a lab owner/lover. I knew the ending was going to be sad but I didn't anticipate it to be that sad.

Bag of Bones! Yes! I was in a hotel room, by myself, on a long work thing, and just cried my eyes out when that character died -- so young, so full of love. And when the character's "ghost" showed up one last time, oh, the tears.
The Stand -- If you are thinking of the character of whom I am thinking, absolutely. I have a disability, and I identified with that character. I was young when I read the book, and I was startled when the character told Mother Abigal that he "Didn't believe in God," and she responded, "That don't matter. He believes in you." At the time, I didn't believe in God, either (few 16 year-olds, do, I suspect). So when King killed off that character . . .

I can't read books where animals die since "Where the Red Fern Grows." I read it as a kid and the damn thing nearly did me in.
Two books that have had me in tears recently (and left me unable to stop thinking about them) were Ian McEwan's Atonement and Ann Patchett's Bel Canto. (Just finished that one yesterday and I am absolutely haunted by it.)

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
This book was his deepest and most touching. Somehow he reached into the minds of the elderly and shared what it feels like to have a spouse dealing with Alzheimers.
Oh my mom handed me that book 10 years ago, and said "oh honey, its just wonderful." I read it... cried my eyes out, and told her never to tell me "how wonderful" a book was again. I yelled at her telling her that was the most depressing book I've ever read. I didn't speak to her for 2 days.
I loved every minute of the book :)

I was on a Nicholas Sparks kick a few summers ago when the Notebook came out in theatres. I read several of his books and they all made me cry, but I sobbed the most reading A Bend in the Road.
Also, PP's have mentioned Stephen King's Bag of Bones. I remember several years ago picking it up from a bargain bin at border's since I love him. I couldn't believe I was crying reading an SK book.

I'm looking for a book to give my 8 year old Nephew for his birthday. I thought of Where The Red Fern Grows, since it was my favorite when I was little. I looked it up on Amazon... and there are two excerpts. I cried just reading the excerpts, though it's been 20-25 years since I read it cover to cover.
I come in here thinking maybe someone is posting about books for youngsters, click on this thread, and notice that many of you have the same 'problem' with the book... :)

Thanks ladies, I just added a ton of criers to my library list ;) LOL I'm a glutton for punishment.
I cried most recently while reading "For Laci" about Laci Peterson, written by her mom, Sharon Rocha. I think being a mom and feeling Sharon's pain is what did me in. A LOT of the books already listed have done me in though :)

I have cried at a lot of the children's/YA books already posted, but I remember in the recent past crying at
The Lovely Bones
I have a hard time with parental sadness themes. It's like how I've seen Saving Private Ryan 150 times now and I still burst into tears every time Mrs. Ryan sees the army chaplain's car pulling up her farm road to tell her her 4 sons are dead.

Another one here for Where the Red Fern Grows. I will never forget being over at my best friend's house reading it. I was going to be spending the night over there, and I just had a handful of chapters to go to finish it for school, so I brought it with me. After I finished it, I had to go home. I couldn't stop crying.
HP and the Half-Blood Prince got me, too. I just reread it recently, and it did it again.
