View Full Version : how can I teach my cat to stay off a dangerous ledge?

I've had my cat for about three months now, and only in the past two weeks has she actually been acting like a typical cat. She's now very curious, likes to explore, and she's started jumping, when before she would just lay on the floor or sofa. Now she's all over the place.

The issue is that she's started jumping on top of the ledge at the top of the foyer. Our front hall is open for full two stories, and she sits on the top of the half-wall along the hallway. If she were to fall, she'd plummet two stories onto a tile floor.

I wouldn't worry so much with a normal cat, but she's extremely clumsy. I don't know why, the vet says her vision and inner ears are fine. But she tends to stumble and fall a lot. For example, when she tries to get down from the couch, she can't seem to remember that the pillow is softer than the armrest, so she'll jump down with one foot on each side and the pillow will give way, tumbling her to the ground. Or she'll jump up to the windowsills to look out, then suddenly fall off randomly.

Normally when she's somewhere I don't want her to be, a loud, firm NO is all it takes to get her to obey. I'm afraid to yell at her when she's on this ledge in case I scare her, but I know they say you can't discipline your pet unless you actually catch them in the act. Can I pick her up, set her on the floor where she's safe, then give her the NO? Will she understand?

Here is where she lays, the ledge at the top where the two plants are sitting:

Maybe you can try sticking some double face tape on the ledge so that when she jumps up she gets stuck. She probably won't like that so she'll stop. (We tried this with one of ours until he figured out how to peel off the tape  ).

Maybe you could stick some aluminum foil up there? I've heard cats don't like the feel of it.

There's also these:

Our first cat, Lily, was always climbing onto the sill of the window over our front door. We lived in a split-level then and had a "half wall" between the stairs and living room. Basically, the portion in the living room was as high as the back of the couch.

Anyway, Lily was only 8 weeks old when we got her and we could not keep her from going from the wall ledge to the window sill. Then one day she fell. I just about died. Fortunately, she was OK. Unfortunately, she kept going up there. Then when she was 4 months old she fell and fractured her hip. Now, you'd think that would keep her off of the ledge. Nope! During her recovery she got right back up there and we had to get a ladder to get her down because she couldn't turn on the sill to come back down with her bad hip.

That's when we decided we had to do something. With my dad's help we made a VERY long kitty perch out of bookshelf boards (from Home Depot) and left over basement carpet. We then screwed oak shelving brackets (also from home depot) to the wall and nailed the perch onto the brackets. We had the perch level with the window sill. I'd love to include a picture, but I don't have a Snapfish account to load them onto.

Lily loved her big window perch and spent most of her time there. Our second cat, Kali, liked it up there as well. It was soft and sunny with a great view. :)

Thanks to Sazzo I can now upload pictures here. This is the best (digital) one I could find of my old house with the perch. It's behind me (the crazy painting lady on the ladder) under the big window.

As an aside, you may also be able to see Lily on the ladder a couple steps down from my feet. This is quite the daredevil cat. Kali is at the top of the stairs. :)

We lived in a loft for year with our 3 cats and none of them ever fell, though I constantly worried about it. The bedroom was completely open to the downstairs one side and 1/2 open on the other. I don't have any tips, though. Like you, we were too frightened to try to yell at them when they would sit on top of the ledge.
