View Full Version : Getting dog vomit out of rugs?

So my dog throws up every once in a while (posted about that earlier), and apparently her stomach bile is red which does not come out of our carpet. We have darker mottled carpet so I can't see the red in them after we've cleaned them (w/ oxy clean), but DH swears he can.
Here's the issue--we have a cream rug that she puked on and we didn't find it for a couple days. We cannot get the red/orange out. It's very faint, but it's there. We've tried Oxy-Clean and Nature's Miracle. The Nature's Miracle said to pour it on liberally, blot, and let dry for stains. Well, that didn't do anything. Are we using it wrong, or are we out of luck? When we had the carpets cleaned when we moved in (they are nice carpets only a few years old), it seemed there was some child's vomit in one closet with the red tinge and the carpet cleaner got it out. What was he using?

You want to know the best stuff Ever?
Woolite Oxy Deep - The spray, not the 2-container pump thing. They sell it at Target.

It got week-old yellow bile vomit stains out of my silver plush carpet and not a single discoloration remains.
Honestly, I'd tried everything known to man and nothing worked except this. My dog was vomiting and having diarrhea all over my house and you can't even tell. Using the steam cleaner to suck up the liquid after spraying and letting it soak in for about 5 min worked wonders.

Red is always the hardest. I usually have good luck with regular Resolve carpet cleaner, but the one time my cat got into the red hedgehog food and threw up on the beige carpet, I couldn't get that stain out. I'm going to look for that stuff MsPeachy recommended.

I recommend Hoover Spot and Stain Cleaner.

It's intended to be a pretreater for when you shampoo the rug, but it also works great alone. It's about 9-10 bucks a bottle at Wal-Mart.
This has worked for us to get out cat puke, and also axle grease on a light tan carpet.
I would actually go with a steam cleaner. It lasts longer and it's more dependable than a cleaning solution. I have the Bissell Green Machine and it works great (haven't heard anything good about the Spot Bot, though).

Another vote for the Woolite OxyClean. And the steam cleaner.
Or, call a cleaner and ask for a recommendation. I'm sure they would have some other good tips.

We have the Spot Bot and it has worked great on reddish dog vomit, as well as red clay dirt the dogs tracked in on their paws. I love how you don't have to work on the spot...just set the Spot Bot over the stain, push a button, and walk away. About 3 minutes later it's gone. I was skeptical after FH came home with it, but now it rates up there with the Hoover Floor Mate as my favorite things!

Thanks, everyone! I think I'll try the Woolite Oxy Deep next since that got two votes;). We have a Rainbow vac that has a deep carpet clean wand attachment and will suck up water straight into the vac, so that has always worked well for us. I even spilled an entire glass of red wine on this rug and Oxy Clean took it right out, it was like a commerical! So I don't get why it didn't work on this--apart from it being set in and being a different type of stain, it was still red and still "organic", right?

I second the Woolite carpet cleaner. I also can't say enough about my Hoover steam cleaner. I usually try just the spray cleaner first, since I steam clean the rugs a couple times a year. If that doesn't work, I pull out the steam cleaner. It was the best $300 I have ever spent. I'm basically doing the same thing as MsPeachy, treating first with the Woolite, then steam cleaning. Although, when I just pull out the steam cleaner first once in awhile, without using the Woolite, that usually works okay for me. I live in the country and sorry this is gross, but my dogs are always eating grass, mud, dead things that they find, and deer or rabbit poop they find in the yard. Then they are considerate enough to come inside and vomit it up. So it's usually some really heavy duty stuff I'm trying to clean up.
The steam cleaner alone did NOT get out our dog's vomit stains.
Um, yeah - if you don't have a solution within the cleaner, you're right. But instead of using a sponge and cleaner, I found the steamer to give it that extra oomph.

Fuzzy should have some good input, she's got a pup as well as pukealicious cats like mine.

We did use steam cleaner soultion in the steam cleaner. It may have been 3:30am on a workday but I remember that much. It was just last month. In addition, at my old house, the steam cleaner (with cleaning solution in it) would not remove vomit stains that had been there for a while despite the fact that we'd used Resolve, Bissell, and other numerous cleaners.
On the fresh vomit, first I blotted with paper towels to remove the excess fluid. Then I sprayed the Oxy Deep and let sit 4 min. Finally I used the steam cleaner with solution in the water to wash the fibers and suck out all the products. On the stain I sprayed the Oxy Deep, waited about 10 minutes and then went over it with the steam cleaner. This method worked particularly well when I came home from work one day to find 7 individual areas of vomit and diarrhea. Using the Oxy Deep I have absolutely no stains at all.

I have no idea why, but on the rugs of our old house, Resolve cleaner worked WONDERS. Nothing else got out puke stains like that stuff. Our new home is mostly hardwoods, so we haven't had to deal with carpet stains in a while...
I just have, because I'm uber nosey, the vet knows about this red bile, right? I've never heard of such a thing...

Hmm, well, you don't see the red in the vomit (and I don't even know if I'd call it vomit, but regurgitation), but it does remain after the stain is clean. So it's not like she's spitting up red. Should I still be worried? I've told the vet about the puking, but since she likes to eat grass and poop (and at times eat her food too fast), she's not worried since it seems like a habit. Of course, we're trying to curb this, but she's a hound and can find anything.
Spot Shot also works wonders.
I always use this. It gets out pretty much anything.

Oh, ok! I had this image of her puking red gunk and thought maybe she was vomitting blood or something. But now I understand...ignore me, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

So the red doesn't show up until later? In that case, maybe it's some sort of chemical reaction from the cleaning fluid, or maybe from some treatment on the carpet itself.

That is a good thought, but it's happened on two different rugs/carpets, and only one was cleaned by the carpet guy. Hmm. Though, it sounded like countrymouse also has reddish dog vomit, so maybe it's not that weird?

Hmm. Does her kibble have a lot of food coloring? Maybe she has a sensitivity to it.

Another good thought. Well, it's the same kibble she's been eating since she she was a puppy (C/D Prescription Diet for urine stones), and it doesn't have a red tinge, so I don't think so. Thanks for the help, though!

Another vote for the Woolite Oxy Deep. It got the stain out when our dog barfed up all of the chocolate bunny that she ate (long story, don't ask!). Granted, it took a couple of tries, but it did fully come out of the light beige berber carpet.
