hi
dd is 6mos and i thought i'd give it a whirl. she always tries to hold her bottle so why not.
so i got the cheapy cups at target. they have some weird rubber thing under the lid. i take it completely off and the formula comes flying out of the sippy part and some other weird hole on the lid (maybe thats for a straw??)
in any event - i hate these cups.

can someone recommend a good starter cup that has 2 handles.....

hey.....I know how frustrating finding the right sippy cup can be! The rubber thingie is there to keep the liquid from spilling out...the baby has to suck on it to get anything out at first. I think the idea is eventually when they get the hang of it and can handle the cup well themselves, you take out the rubber thing.

As someone who has a cabinet full of different sippy cups, I can say that all the ones I have have the rubber thing. My personal favorite (really DDs) is the Avent one with the soft spout. I think it is a good starter cup b/c of the soft spout. Also I use Avent bottles and the soft spouts work with the bottles and rings I have so it is nice that I can mix all the stuff around. I can even put the handles on the bottle, if that makes sense.

Hope that helps, now that DD is older she also will use cups with the hard plastic spouts on them, but the soft ones are really nice earlier on.

Good luck finding the right cup, a lot of times it is just trial and error to see which cup your DC will take to!

The rubber piece is sort of like a loose drain plug ;) It's there to slow the formula/water/etc down.

When we started using sippy cups we started mainly with the Avent "magic trainer" type that had handles.

We like the Avent one too. Gerber has one that has movable handles that is good, but I think that the avent one is easier to clean and to get liquid from.

I've tried a gazillion sippy cups, and believe it or not, the ones my DS loves and work the best are the Gerber disposable cups. I reuse them, of course, they are like tubberware. Those are the ones he prefers and they don't leak unless he shakes it while upside down. I also have 2 Playtex cups that he really likes. We tried the Advent because I've heard such good things, but my son rejected them for some reason or another.

I have tried many sippy cups and none worked until this one.

Although I am not sure if this would work with your DD right now. I gave it to my DD when she was about a year old.

LOL!! The point of the stopper is make sure when the kid throws it in the floor ( like mine does) that it doesn't leak. Also it teaches them to pull from it.

We have the platex one--DS really likes it.

We started out using the first years take 'n toss ones, I like that they don't have a valve but still don't leak too badly. But, no handles. Then I decided I preferred straw cups because it is easier for my DD to hold and drink out of it- no tilting back required. Plus I did some research and it seems that extensive use of sippy cups can lead to speech development issues whereas using a straw actually strenghens oral muscles. So, I've switched to straw cups exclusively now, and dd does great with them! I love love love the parent's choice and nuby straw cups (they're the same ones). The straw is soft and flattened which makes it easier for DD to suck out of (she's never had a bottle).
If I had to start over, I'd have skipped the sippy and went directly to the straw.
