View Full Version : How long was your labor from start to finish?

Last night we had our first birth class and the teacher said most labors from start to finish is about 14 hours long...
both of our families live in San Francisco and we live in San Diego. I'm so afraid I won't know I'm in "easy labor" and call them with not enough time to get down here. If it's during the day there are enough flights for them to catch but if it's the middle of the night I guess they'll either have to drive down or wait until the morning to come down...I'm a little nervous that they will miss it.
So....from the moment you felt like you were in labor to the moment your child was born, how long was labor?
Also, what was your first sign of labor?
Thanks ladies.

I swear I had the easiest, fastest labor in the midwest! :D
My water broke at exactly 5:00am and I decided to get in the shower and shave my legs (I thought I had plenty of time). I have had friend's who's water broke and they had to be induced because the contractions just weren't kickin' in! ;) Well, as I was in the shower, the first contraction hit! It wasn't terrible, but I definitely knew it was a contraction! I got out of the shower (after I got my legs shaved ofcourse :p ) and my husband tried to time them, but they were coming pretty fast and furious!
We left for the hospital around 6:15am, was admitted at 6:45am, they checked me and I was already 5cm and completely effaced! By 9:50am, I was complete and started working on pushing. At 10:41am, we welcomed our son into the world!
The nurses (and my doctor) could not believe I had him start to finish in 5 hours and 41 minutes! I guess that is pretty darn good for a first time Momma! :D
Good luck to you when your little girl arrives!!!
P.S. If Cole was a girl, her name was going to be Alexis!! I love your name!!
5 hours to the minute. I woke up at 2:21 when my water broke. I got a shower (shaved my legs too...lol) ate something and left for the hospital. I had my first contraction on the back steps on the way out to the car. By the time I got to the hospital (2 minutes away) they hurt pretty bad. By the time I got to the delivery room I was 4 cm. At 6 am I started pushing and at 7:21 DD was born. I too got lucky for my first baby!!

8 hours 20 minutes. My water broke at 10:45pm, she was born at 7:05 the next morning. Most of the time was spent getting to 6cm. I went from 6-10 in about 20 minutes, then pushed for an hour. It was really easy and an awesome birth experience!

4 hours, 40 minutes. My water broke at 9am, although I wasn't sure that it had happened or if DS was on my bladder. Called dr's office at 10, they had me come in to be checked. Went to dr's at 11, hospital at 12. I was 3cm and completely effaced. Complete at 1pm. Had to wait 15 mins. for the midwife to show up (not easy when all you want to do is push!). DS was here at 1:41 pm. I am scared what #2 will be like when the time comes!
24 hours, 3 minutes - I am WAY jealous of all the previous posters. :D
I'm a little jealous over here too BTB! My labor was about 12 hours start to finish. I was at home watching Law & Order when the contractions struck. I went to the hospital when my contractions were 5 minutes apart. I think I was 3cm when they admitted me. My doctor broke my water and it was really quick after that.

19 hours. However, the OB who delivered DD (not *my* OB, but the one on duty) might have had something to do with that. He insisted that I be hooked up to a monitor from the minute I checked into the hospital, even though hospital policy for diabetics was not to do that. He was very old fashioned and conservative. I am convinced labor stalled because of that. (When I checked in at 10 AM, I was 4 cm--at 5 PM, I think I was only 5 cm.) We had learned in the birth class that moving around is the best thing to do to hasten labor. They broke my water around 5 PM, too, and it still took six more hours.
So, some advice to you is if you want things to move along, try to move around yourself, if possible..

Water broke at 7 am-got to the hosptial about 8ish and was already 4 centimeters. DS was born at 1:38 pm.
But the night before I was feeling off. My lower back hurt and tmi had bloody show. But no contractions. When I saw the Dr. the next day he could have sworn I'd be calling him in the middle of the night. Guess I just needed the last night of good sleep. :)
Good Luck

My labor was 23 hours. Pitocin was started at 7am and I had DD the following morning at 6:03am.
contrax started around 10p saturday, went to the hospital at 1a sunday, labored until later in the morning [went really fast and relatively painless since i had drugs], called MIL in NYC around 5a to get on a plane, labored then pushed for about 2hrs and he was born just before 2p sunday. MIL arrived around 7p.

Hi, I had the same concern that my family would miss it too! They had to drive 3 hours to get here....they made it though! This is how it happened...I was a week overdue and was scheduled to be induced very late on Sunday night.. the day before at about 3:00 pm or so my back started really bothering me...I did not think anything of it b/c my back never felt that great as I was 41 weeks pg  The back pain got worse and worse until about 6:00 when I knew something was different about...I tried everything to get comfortable...walking, stretching, a shower and nothing made my back feel better. I had no pain in my abdomen at all though so I figured it was not labor. Fast forward to 9:00 pm when my DH finally says that we were going to the hospital...he did not care if we got sent home. So we packed up the car and headed there. Since I was so sure that it was not labor since I only had back pain, I had DH drop me off at L&D and he went to park the car..by the time he got done parking the car, I was being admitted as I was already 4.5 cm when they checked me. At that point I called my parents and they left right away. They made it wil plenty of time to spare. DD was born at 5:44 am the next day. I did have an epi though which may have slowed things down a bit...but I was really comfortable so it did not bother me. I guess one thing to keep in mind is that it is possible to have only back labor!!! I never knew that (I was always looking for front pain) so I thought without the front pain there was no way I could be in labor. Good luck with everything!

3 1/2 to 4 hours, I think. I don't really remember. :p I was induced w/ Pitocin because my water was leaking. Pitocin started at 2 PM (I think), DD was born at 5:22 PM. We didn't want anyone else there for the birth anyway, so I was happy to have it happen quickly!

First sign of labor--my water broke at about 1:30am.
I was admitted to the L&D at 2:30am. I was given my epidural at about 4am, and delivered at 9:15am.

2 Hours 43 minutes.
Was a little leaky when I woke up on my due date. First contraction hit me hard at 10:30am, rushed to the hospital as soon as DH got home. Started pushing at 1pm because baby was already waaaaay down. He was born at 1:13pm. Holy cow did it go fast!
From what I understand, my experience is not the norm.

17 hours, it ended in an emergency c-section due to Andrew's heart rate plummenting with each contraction. The problem with that was my contractions were one on top of another, his heart rate could never climb back up and stabalize..

I started to realize I was having contractions around 5:30am, dilly dallied for a bit and got to the hospital around 8:30am and was already 4cm, my water broke about 5 minutes later and my son was born at 3pm.
So, about 7.5 hours. ;)
ETA- I didn't see the other part of your question, what was your first sign of labor...
Mine was that I just wasn't feeling "right", I thought it was something I ate the night before (you know, since I really could NOT be in labor..), couldn't sleep.. and it didn't really hit me until I saw bloody show- that's when I realized my stomachache was really contractions! talk about denial.

Long time! If you count early labor...31 hours (24 of that was "easy"). Mine came on so slow and gradual. It started at 7am, but didn't even call DH at work (I knew it was early labor and didn't want him coming home if he didn't need to.)

3.5 hrs -- laying in bed at 10:30 pm, couldn't really tell if i was having contractions, rolled over to my side, had the most painful contraction ever and thought 'there is no way i'm going without drugs'. i got up, took a quick shower and as soon as i got out my water broke and there was meconium. went straight to the hospital, was at 8 cm when checking in and delivered shortly after.

Let's see. I was induced and they started the drip at about 5:30 am on Oct. 26. They broke my water at 8am I think. I got the epidural around 1:30pm after I couldn't handle the hyperstimulated ctrx. They had to turn off the pitocin because it was causing my cntx to come to fast and hard. I started having problems once I got the epidural with DS heartrate dropping during ctrx. It finally came back up and I labored some more. Finally at around Midnight they decided to do a C/S since DS heartrate kept dropping. I was fully dilated and thought I was going to start pushing but got wheeled into the OR instead. He was born at 12:37am Oct. 27. So in all I labored for 18 1/2 hours.

Let's see with DS labor began on 02.02.03 around 8pm while I was playing slingo, went to the hospital around 12:45 am and he was born @ 8:51pm 02.03.03, so 25 hrs 51 mins
With DD labor began around 1am on 12.24.04 when I went into the bathroom and puked up my dinner (sorry TMI gross) labored in bed until 4am when I could no longer handle it on my own, woke DH called the doc parents picked us up @ 4:30 got checked in and was already 3cm...given pitocin around noon and she was delivered @ 4:54 pm on 12.24.04 so 15hrs 54 mins
My body doesn't like labor...it likes to takes it's sweet time, both times I was given pitocin and both times the doc broke my bag of waters...

I have a half filipina daughter (filipinos are notorious to be on filipino time (late), especially the girls)
I was 1 week late
~28 hrs in labor
2 hours of pushing
7:00am - admitted to the hospital 4 cm dilated (mucus plug) nothing hurting, just blood coming out.
8:00am - 5 cm dilated
12:00pm - decided to induce (break water) after this is when I finally felt contractions, gave me epidural around 5:00pm, after epidural, knocked out and slept and woke when medication started wearing out.
Next day - stopped my epidural, cranked up the pitocin
11:00am - 10 cm dilated moved me to labor delivery room had the baby around 12:55pm

I was admitted on Wednesday AM around 4am - only 1cm but crazy contractions...plus I had a fever...around midnight on Wednesday they decided to start inducing - had the epidural around 3am and started pushing around 9am and delivered at 1pm. Yuck...it wasn't fun...sorry I still can't be happy about any of it until G was born...then things got better although I had lots of yucky stuff going on but I will spare you that! :o

dd#1 - @37 weeks, I lost at least part of my plug and the baby was pretty low. @39 weeks, my OB stripped my membranes, said I was 3 cm; I had contractions from then until I delivered. @40 weeks, I was more than 3cm. @41 weeks, I was induced, starting at 5 cm, -1 station, fully effaced. After 2 hours of pitocin, tried pushing... rested for a while, baby was born after around 3 hours of pitocin. (I can't remember exact number) Since I walked in at 5 cm, it's hard to say how long my labor was. Technically, it was days - if not weeks - of stalled labor.
dd#2 - I had absolutely no contractions, despite repeated stripping of my membranes. At 41 weeks, 1 cm, soft, but very posterior, I was induced. Pit was started at noon, I started active labor late in the early evening. She was born at 11:31, I think active labor time was around 5 hours.
It does seem like everyone counts labor time differently, my midwives count it as the time spent in active labor. Like, from 3 or 4 cm on. Not necessarily after water breaks, but specifically when the mother is in active labor.

mild contrax started 5/8 at 1pm, were much stronger by evening, and 60 seconds long/2-3 min. apart by midday 5/9.
ds was born 5/10 at 4 pm via c-section. i was at 4 cm.
so from start to "finish" it was ~52 hours.

12 hours to the minute. I woke up to pee at 3:57am and then laid back down when I noticed I had a slow leak. The hospital said to come in so they could test it. I didn't feel contractions for about 4 hours after that, but I was already at 4 cm when I got to the hospital. I was complete and started pushing at 1:30pm. DS was stubborn and I pushed for 2 1/2 hours.

Went in for ante-partum testing (non-stress test) at 2:30pm on Friday b/c I was 40w 6d, and was told I was having contractions every 3-4 min., although they were not painful. I could feel them, but it felt like the baby stretching if that makes any sense.
Water broke at 9:45pm that night. Went to the hosptial immediately b/c there was a lot of meconium in the water. They started pitocin (wish I'd said no, but given what had gone on, it didn't even cross my mind). DS was born at 12:33pm the following afternoon (Saturday). So, I'd say 15 hours or so total. 3.5 hours of hard pushing.

Water broke at around midnight and Abbey was born at 5:11pm the next day...with the help of LOTS of pitocin. The little stinker did NOT want to come out. ;) So I guess my labor was about 17 hours.
We live in San Francisco and DH's parents are in Orange County. We called them when my water broke and they got to the hospital around 2pm. Plenty of time for the delivery...even though I made them wait in the waiting room. Hehe.

17.5 hours from the first contraction to DD's birth. Non-induced, and my water broke about 3 hours before the birth.
With #1 I was induced at around 10PM with Pitocin. At 6 in the morning I was only 4 cm dilated. :( To my surprise DD was born 1 1/2 hours later after 15 minutes of pushing. :) In total, about 9 1/2 hours from start to finish.
I had prodromal labor the week before #2 was born. At my last doctors appointment the night before she was born I was 3-4 cm, 100% effaced, and contracting pretty regularly (though the contractions weren't very strong). The doctor stripped my membranes and that helped get things going a little bit. I went to the hospital the next morning at 9:30 AM, was 5 cm dilated, and she was born at 1:57 PM after 3 pushes. So we were at the hospital for about 4 1/2 hours before she was born.

39 hours... I started having contractions on Monday morning (1 a.m.) which woke me up out of my sleep. Went to the hospital - I was only a fingertip dilated so they sent me home. Spent all day Monday laboring off and on. It picked up around 7 p.m. on Monday and went to the hospital again around 3:00 a.m. Tues - 6 centimeters dilated. My son was born at 4:08 p.m. on Tues after 3 hours of pushing.
Really hoping next time around it is easier! Insanely jealous of those who had short or "average" labors!

34 hours, counting from the time my water broke, when I immediately started having regular contractions. I had back labor and was unmedicated for the first 26 hours, after which I had Pitocin and an epidural (and yes, it still took another 8 hours for Nora to be born!)

DD1- about 28 hours from water breaking to birth (with epi, cytotec, pit, etc)
DD2- depends. I had somewhat painful and uncomfortable prodromal labor for two weeks, which got me to about 3 cms. I started having somewhat more painful contrax at 11 am on a Monday. More painful at 5 pm. Left for birth center at 12 midnight. Born at 5:30. I would say 5 hours, though, because it wasn't seriously painful until we left for the BC.

Woke up around 3AM with cramping contractions, woke up again at 6AM with painful contractions and went to the bathroom to find I was loosing my plug (bloody show), labored at home until about 3PM until the contractions were very painful but still 7-9 minutes apart (I was told not to come until they were 2-3 minutes apart) got to the hospital and was 4cm dialated...water broke around 4:00 PM and that is when the real fun began - got an epi an hour later at 7cm. Started pushing around 10PM and had a her at 12:25AM the next morning.

11 hours start to finnish, with 10 minutes of pushing. I did not have one single labor sign/contraction until 11pm on saturday night- though I'd be pregnant for another week or so, but after the first 3 contrax hit (about 10 minutes apart), the rest came every minute and a half until DD was born (at 9:50am, Sunday). We were in the hospital for about7.5 hours before she was born.

humm, do I count my latent labor, which started for two weeks prior, with contrax coming every 5 - 8 mins? Or when I went in on a Weds night for induction, to get the ball rolling, only to have him Friday afternoon, with almost 5 hours of pushing? If I counted from my water being broke, it was 26 hours total...
Sorry, I just realized that sounded a little bit horrifying. Everything worked out in the end, and even though it was a very long labor, I would go through everything again in a heart beat, plus - my epi was a dream! :D
5 hours and 9 min, including 2 hrs of pushing.

It depends on how you count it. From the very very begining, 22 hours. Contrax started at 3am, I went in around 6 or 7am, was sent home because they weren't strong enough (i was told to go in when they were 4-5, and they were 3-4 min apart). I was told they would either get stronger or go away. By 2 I was fed up because they wouldn't do either. They finally went away but came back with a vegence around 4. We went in around 7p, and I had er 1:12am after about 45 minutes of pushing. Oh, yeah, and two epidurals and 2 shots of phetenol:eek: Only to be told it was time to push immediately afterwards. About 5 hours in the hospital, or 8 hours if you count from when they came back

I had a c-section, so this is not totally helpful but I was in labor before the c-section to take what you can from my experience and toss the rest.
I was scheduled for a c-section at 8am or so in the morning due to the size of my baby (10 pounds 6 ounces at birth). My water broke at about midnight. I was allowed to labor, drug free at my request, until around 7am at which time I was not very far dialated, not that it really mattered since I was going to have the surgury. My contractions were noticable but not really very painful for the first hour or so, and then became quite strong and with very little time between. I was hooked to a monitor but could walk around my room. I mostly sat on a stool or ball though. Given the gush of flow when my water broke (I was on the toilet at the time) and how little I dialated and think my sons head was not low enough to help me dialate and that I would have been in labor much longer if I had not had the surgury.

The nurses (and my doctor) could not believe I had him start to finish in 5 hours and 41 minutes! I guess that is pretty darn good for a first time Momma! :D
I got you beat!:p :D LOL My son was 4 hours 22 minutes from start to finish. But it was my second baby, so I'll let ya have it! :p We were expecting a quick labor though because my DD was less than 8 hours from start to finish. Both times my first sign was bloody show.

With my first DD my doctor made me go to the hospital because I was 8cm at my appointment (though i wasn't having any contrax so I didn't know it!) I got to the hospital, they broke my water at 2:45pm, I had my first contrax at 2:50pm, starting pushing at 2:55pm and she was born at 2:59pm. So I guess that's 14 minutes!!
With DD #2 I was put on hospital bedrest at 33 weeks because I was 5-6cm. Two days later they checked me and I was at 8cm (but not having contrax). Once again, they broke my water, I had my first contrax, started pushing at 1:56pm and she was born at 2:00pm. From the time they broke my water it was about 15 minutes.
Hopefully my future childern will give me a little more warning!!

Just wanted to come back and post. I posted in July that I was terrified of a 24+ hour labor. Thankfully, mine was only 5 hours 45 minutes. My water was broken at 8:30 am (was having minimal contractions before then - was induced, but NO pitocin was used - just broke my water). I started pushing at 2:00pm, and his official birth time was 2:15pm.
*Kind of worried about the second one coming on the interstate. :p *
Total time from labor starting to birth:
DD1: 19 hours including 1 hour of pushing
DD2: 8 hours - no pushing involved; she came out with just 1/2 a push.

Early labor: 2 weeks
Active labor started hard core at 11:30 pm. My water broke at about 4:00 (I was sleeping). I pushed 8 times (almost delivered without the Dr). My DD was here at 6:26 am. So all total, just under 7 hours.

14 hours from the time my water broke with a gush to the time DD was delivered. I pushed for about 2-2.5 hours. However, I did not have many contrax until the pit was administered 8 hours after my water broke.

No discernable early labor--I was nearly two weeks late and just a smidge effaced and not dilated at all. I had BH for three months, though.
Started induction on Tuesday at noon (cervodil), continued with misoprostin Wednesday and Thursday morning. Water broke at noon on Thursday and contractions really started. Lost the remaining water at about 6:00 and things got intense. Started pushing at 3:35 AM on Friday and DS was born at 4:05 AM.
So, 2+ days of induction techniques, 15 1/2 hours of active labor and 30 mintues of pushing.

Ugh, just under 26 hours! I started having contractions at 6:45 am on a Monday morning & DD was born at 8:37 am on Tuesday morning. I pushed for three hours & needed to deliver her with the vacuum in the end. All in all, the labor portion before the pushing was a breeze......the pushing part is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life!

From the time we got to the hospital until the time DD was born was 16 hours. After pushing for 2 hours and 20 minutes, my doctor decided I needed a c-section for a variety of reasons. I had been having contractions for 4 hours before we went to the hospital, so if you count that, then 20 hours.

Water broke around 6am. Brody was born 5:27pm. 11 1/2 hrs.
DD water broke at 11:00 p.m., she was born at 12:20 a.m. I was on bed rest since 32 weeks and she was born at 34 weeks.
DS1 water broke around 2:30 p.m., he was born 3:30p.m. (almost didn't make it to the hospital). I was 36 weeks. No real signs except I was sicker than a dog that day and stayed home from work.
DS2 contractions started around 2:00 (this was after going to the doctor that morning and him stripping my membranes). He was born at 4:00 p.m.

1st labor(posterior baby)- 21 hours. Only pushed for 20 minutes, though, even though she stayed posterior.
2nd labor- 7 hours 45 minutes. He was out in 1.5 pushes when it was time to push, too!
Neen...I hate you! (JUST KIDDING). How great to have such short labor!
And they were all drug free! (ok, only because even if had wanted anything, there wouldn't have been time!!!) I wouldn't change my birth experiences for the world.

My labor was 36 hours start to finish. 32 hours of hard labor. I really am hoping for a shorter labor with the next child or they will be the last.

I completely agree with this. I have never worked so hard in my life.

Labor was 13 hours from start to finish. All in all, it was really easy. Actually that day was really fun!
