As some of you may know my four month old ds is a horrendous sleeper. Certain things work for awhile, but in the end, his arms startle him awake and I think that's the real issue. The past few nights while I'm awake, he's been sleeping on his tummy and he's been sleeping well. When I go to bed, though, I flip him over on his back, and then the hourly wake ups begin. I'd like to try tummy sleeping, but my paranoid mind can't handle it. My ds can roll over and lift his head, but he smooshes his face in the mattress when he's on his tummy. I've been in to check on him twenty times already. Would an Angel Care Monitor set my mind at ease? Does it work, or is it one of those gadgets that appears to be a good idea, but doesn't really work? Does anyone have one and can vouch for it?

I'm no help at all because we bought one, but obviously haven't used it yet since I'm still pregnant. lol However, if you care to go back to "the other place", there was a thread about the Angel Care monitor started a few months or so ago. Hopefully you'll be able to find it in a search. I *think* it was on the Parenting board. I actually decided on this monitor after reading that thread and the reviews on amazon.com and target.com. HTH!

It definitely works. Several times we'd take my DD out of her cradle and forget to shut it off and 20 seconds later the alarm would sound. We had to turn the motion sensor off all together once she got old enough to scoot around the crib because she's get off of the pad and the it would go off and wake her (and us). My SIL also got one for the same reason you want one and she was very happy with her decision. Incidentally, the alarm sound on ours stopped working after a year or so. We still use it for a sound-only monitor but will have to get a new base unit whenever we have another kid. Not sure if that is a common problem but I thought I'd mention it. It was worth it though, even with that.
my cousin swears by this thing. he used it for both his daughters and bought us one w/out us registering for it. i was kind of annoyed by that at first so i'm glad to see it gets a lot of positive reviews. ;)

I used it and I swear by it. It gave me such peace of mind. We did have one or two false alarms when Aidan was really young and would scooch way up top on the mattress. It would scare the bejeesus out of us but we knew it was working. If I ever have another baby I would never go without it. It is well worth the money.

It won't prevent SIDS or anything, obviously, but it is soo worth it. When my son wasn't sleeping with us, it made me feel so much better that I would know RIGHT AWAY if something were to happen. And like PP, I had it scare the crud out of me when I took him out and forgot to turn it off a few times.
I also purchased mine on Babycenter, I believe, and it was on sale for half price, so I paid $45 versus $90. So keep your eyes peeled. Though, even if we did not use it much, it would have definitely still been worth $90.

Thanks! I read the reviews on BRS and Babycenter and they seemed positive, but I tend to trust you ladies more! I'm going to get one.

We have one and we love it. Our DS is almost 14months old and we still use it. We have had several false alarms, as he rolls around alot or is on the very end of the crib. Well worth the money and peace of mind.

It is so ironic Tracie since we bought ours for the same reason you are saying. It really helped us get some sleep, once I stopped listening to the tick-tock and turned it off that feature:) She slept better on her tummy too and then by five months she rolled herself everywhere. Even now she smushes her face into the mattress. We havent used that monitor for a couple months now but it was priceless while we did and we will use it for the new baby too!

Traci Everytime I see your cute avatar, I just smile! So precious! I'm glad to see you over here!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO worth it!! OMG, about a month ago, I started freaking myself out about SIDS, to the point where I put the bassinet back into our room and had Kassidy sleep there. Excitedbride suggested the monitor and I love it!
We've tested that sucker out every which way but up and it works! I've read almost all of the customer responses on Babycenter and BRU too, and I know some people have said it would go off with their celing fan going. Our's doesn't.
What a peace of mind this monitor gives! I have turned the tic'ing off as I was stressing out about the amount of seconds between the tic's. I was a little post pardum after stopping breastfeeding. I'm not normally this crazy!

Maya also sleeps MUCH better on her tummy. I was somewhat scared, but she's been sleeping on her tummy for a few months now.

I got the monitor, and it went off twice last night! I found ds in a position that he NEVER is in, curled up in the corner of the crib, LOL! I'm almost glad the monitor went off, because it showed me how sensitive it is!

Oh, how scary! I can only imagine how you felt when you heard it. Glad to hear he's ok and that he just likes to move around at night.

scout I am glad you bought it! Ours went off when we first got it and it scared me, but I remembered people saying that they had false alarms. It is good to know it works though right?:)

Nathan has refused to sleep on his back since he was born. The monitor has been wonderful and allows us to sleep without worrying. We've had a few false alarms when he's at the top of the crib, but I'll take those over not having the monitor at all!

We haven't set up the monitor yet, but I took it out of the box a few weeks ago. I remember in the directions it said something about putting down a flat piece of wood or something similar if your crib has a metal support for the mattress. Did anyone do this? Is it really necessary? There was a flyer with the directions to order a masonite (?) piece for this purpose. I have been carrying around this flyer in my purse since then with the intention of calling from work to order it. I'm being induced in 2 weeks, so I think I better get on the ball if I need this thing. lol Anyone know?

We put down a piece of wood. I don't know the details, since dh took care of it, but I do know it was really cheap at Home Depot. Don't order it from the company--I think it's $20. You can get it at Home Depot for about $2.00.

Glad to help--I'm pretty sure that the instructions will even tell you what dimensions the wood should be!
Hope you have an easy delivery!

BUMP!!
Anyone have any more advice/opinions on the angle care monitor.
I'm wondering if it will help me sleep better or make me worry more if there are lots of false alarms.
Also,
Anyone know the big difference between these two monitors??

I've posted in this thread before. I love the monitor and have used the same one for 5 years now. We've never had a problem. It has given me peace of mind like you wouldn't believe. My older DS moved around a lot more in the crib so in the beginning when the baby tends to "scootch" to the top or the bottom of the bassinett or crib, it did go off and we did have mini heart attacks. Our younger DS wasn't as active so we didn't have as many false alarms. Even with the false alarms I can probably count on one hand how many we've had. I also have stated in the past that this monitor I believe saved my ds's life. He was wedged in the corner of the crib against the bumper. The monitor went off and my dh was able to move him. I 100% believe that this did save him that night. I cannot recommend this monitor enough.
I looked at both the links you have posted... the second one is the newer version. It probably has more bells and whistles. I'm still using the older model on my ds that is 20 months old.
Good Luck!!

We still use the monitor for our almost 3 year old (not the movement sensor, of course) and will soon move it to the baby's room once he is born. It really gave me such peace of mind. Yes, the false alarms were scary, but they were really few and far between and the peace of mind far outweighed the few scares that we had!

I got one for my second baby. We didn't end up using the sensor part for very long because he was a real mover and would scoot off of it a lot. We ended up with a lot of false alarms. The sensor part was nice for the first 4 months. It gave me a little piece of mind especially when he started sleeping in longer stretches. I didn't wake up in a panic and run to go checking on him. He's 15 months now, and we still use the monitor part.

It's so funny this thread was bumped up! I wrote the original post with my ds and have since had another baby. We're using the AngelCare monitor with her too, and I highly recommend it. The false alarms are few and far between and always because she is wedged in a corner.

We actually never got the sensor for this set up  - but we really liked that it has two receivers. We use it for sound only and keep one plugged in in our living room and one plugged in in our bedroom. We didn't have it set up in the bassinet and by the time we moved DS to his room he was moving a lot anyway.
Overall we like the monitor - maybe we'll set the sensor up for kid #2? (a long ways away ;))

Love love love this monitor. The static was sort of annoying at first, but we just moved it to a different spot in the room and the problem went away. The false alarms were, as other said, few and far between, and the peace of mind was so worth it. DS was a tummy sleeper from about 2 months on, so we really needed the peace of mind and lovee this monitor. We have since turned off the sensor since DS scoots all over the crib, but it was invaluable. We will definitely use this for kiddo #2.
I think one difference in the 2 monitors is that the newer one tells you the temp that the room you are in is, and the temp of the baby's room. That's what DH tells me anyway.

I have already decided when we have a second baby it will sleep on its stomach on a monitor like this. When I was in sleep hell with dd I knew it was probably because of the back sleeping. The reason back to sleep works to prevent SIDS is probably in a large part due to the fact that babies just don't sleep well on their backs. I figure the monitor would be a good compromise.

Magrat - Just an FYI, DS was/is a tummy sleeper and kept us in sleep hell for 6 months :( He still only STTN about 50% of the time. I just don't want you to get your hopes up too high for DC#2 ;)

Thanks for all your positive reviews - I think I'll get one and if I end up not liking the sensor part of it - I can always use it as a sound only monitor!
