I just used Jergen’s Natural Glow last night and not really sure I like it.
1- It smells pleasant in the bottle, but once on the skin it REEKS like the typical self tanning lotion.
2- Although its faint, there is definite “streakage”…not happy about that
For those who have used it:
How much did you put on? I only did my legs last night and I would say I used about a quarter size for each calf/thigh. Perhaps that is too much? I had to sleep on a separate blanket last night because I was afraid of staining our good sheets. Has anyone experienced any staining of clothing or sheets while using this stuff?
ETA: I took a shower this morning, plus shaved and I reek (my legs that is). I thought I got all this crap off but I guess not. I just hope it doesn't stain the inside of my dress pants!!

I've been using the lotion for about a month now & I haven't stained any of my clothes or bedsheets. Yes, I did have a problem with streaking the first few times that I used it. Now I just make sure to rub in the lotion VERY WELL each time I use it. I use more than a quarter sized portion of the lotion for my legs. I've found that it works well on my legs, but my neck & decolletage areas don't darken as much.

I must of put a tad to much on because even 30-45 mins AFTER application my legs were sticking together.

I don't use it religiously..only when I wear a skirt to work. I have not had any staining problems but the first time i used it, there were definitely streaks happening. I've found that putting more on and rubbing it in more tan usual helps with that.
I could also do without the scent. Since I only use it on my legs, it isn't horrible, but I do spray some B*BW spritzer on before I go out in public.

^^ I just hope I don't stink to others. I am very anal about scent...I shower daily...I think I always smell nice, but I have pants on and my legs are crossed. I think the heat of my legs is activating the scent on my upper thighs...gag!
I will try it again tonight to see if it evens out.
Does anyone notice if it comes off due to shaving? How does it look once it starts fading. If you were to scrap your nail along your skin, would it "scrap" off?
Sorry if these are stupid ?s but the last time I used self-tanner I was in jr. high and it didn't turn out well
I don't like the Jergens stuff at all because of the smell. I've recently started using coppertone's gradual tanning lotion, and it smells much better (though it does have a faint tanning lotion smell)-- it also tans you more quickly, which was a bit of a shocker for me at first since I have very fair skin. But I've found that if I use it every other day in place of regular moisturizer, it works well for me.

Hi!
I'm a tanning fanatic (both in the beds and self). I also used to work at a tanning salon that had both UVA/UVB beds and Mystic Tan. I hope I can answer your questions.
ANY and ALL self-tanners will come off due to shaving, as shaving exfoliates the top layer of your skin, and self-tanners basically just "dye" the top layers of your skin. If you have a good tan built up, and--here's the key--maintain it well, you will fade pretty naturally or else not at all (if you use it regularly to have the same level of tan all week). Most people get a little darker/spots in the elbow, ankle, and knee areas.
If you're horrible about maintainging your tan and don't moisturize or reapply, and use a shower scrub randomly, you will get "spots" (when I'm lazy and don't keep up, I tell my hubby I'm a leper!!). This is true for just about any self tanner that isn't properly maintained.
If you are concerned about scent, California Tan makes a neutralizer, go to http://www.californiatansunless.com/home.php and go to "find a location" to find a salon near you that would sell it. Also check out the link called "Sunless Basics" and then click on "Getting the Most from a Sunless Tan." It gives a good summary about how to prepare and take care of your sunless tan.
FYI: The smell you get when using sunless tanner is the ingredient DHA (the tanning agent) reacting with your skin. Some companies cover it up better than others, but most will have a slight "tanning" scent.
If you have a weekend to experiment, try a self-tanner with a bronzing agent. Then you can see where you applied it on your skin, and will have less of a chance for streaking. I recommend a mousse version, as they dry very quickly (but you also have to rub it in quickly). It can take a bit getting used to, but I find them to work the best. The bronzing agent can come off on sheets/etc if you are super duper sweaty, but for most people it's not a problem once they are fully dry. I'd wait to dress for 15 minutes, instead of the 60 seconds or 5 minutes that some say, just to be safe. The bronzing agent will wash off in the shower (so don't be alarmed!), leaving you with a nice tan.
Self-tanning defintiely takes some practice, and it might take you a while to find the best product for your skin tone/type.
Good luck!!

My eBay tubes of the Jergens Natural Glow arrived last night. I put it on this morning after my shower. I would say that there was a slight odor when I put it on, but I don't smell anything anymore. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Celicacutie81, did you buy the medium or fair? I bought the fair. Perhaps it is less strong?

I think the strength of the smell and the reaction with skin depends on the person and our different chemistry. I normally hate using self-tanners, but I've had great success with Jergens.
I had NO idea Jergens has become so difficult to find. I bought a bunch of bottles 2 months ago when CVS had a sale. I went to get more from Walgreens the other day & couldn't find it. I bought the Neutrogena version instead but haven't tried it yet. If anyone has tried it, let me know how you like it.

I have tried the "build a tan". I think that is by Neutrogena. Its in a yellow bottle.
That I did not like at all because the smell was very strong. I used it once and did not see any results (I at least saw results from 1 day use of the Jergens Natural Glow).

The only sunless Tanner I've used that I liked is the Neutrogena foaming/mousse tanner. I like that you can see where you put it and it dries quick and leaves my a natural color.
that said, I haven't tried the build a tan or the Jergens.
I have a friend that uses the build a tan though and really really likes it

It didn't have the bad smell, but I felt sticky hours afterwards. I used the "dry skin" formula, and I don't have dry skin, so maybe the normal skin one wouldn't be as bad. Don't know yet whether or not it works, b/c it's supposed to have a cumulative effect.

Has anyone tried the spray on self tanner by Coppertone? I was thinking of trying it out since I always seem to get streaks with the lotions (not to mention orange palms). I am curious to hear about people's opinions of this one...its not as expensive as some of the other spray versions...only $11 I think. TIA!

I've been using Clarins Liquid Bronze for the past couple of weeks and I love the results!!! It doesn't have that bad smell at all, because it's made with all natural plant extracts. It gives a really nice nutural tan color too! Plus, I've gotten quite a few complements on my my skin tone lately.

Liquid Bronze
As refreshing as water and gentle as a milk, this scientifically advanced formula sweeps onto skin like a whisper with either a cotton pad or fingertips for an amazingly, natural-looking tan every time. Color shows smoothly and quickly and never turns streaky, so skin looks remarkably radiant for days.
I've used the Estee Lauder sunless towelettes, and they seem to be really good. They are pricey, but you can get your whole body done with one towel. You get 10 towels in a box. I didn't notice any streaks, or dark spots around my knees or elbows. All-in-all, it was a nice even color.
The only drawback (besides the price) is that you have to buy a separate box of towels specifically for your face.
This is me while using the towelettes for my brother's wedding.

I'm interested in trying the Olay quench above. I'd love to have a moisturizer with a bit of sunless tanner in it. That way you wouldn't have to worry so much about being so precise. I'd be willing to wait a few days for it to work, if it went on smoother and more naturally.
ETA: me with no tan.

I did the tanning bed YEAR ROUND, at least twice a month, throughout my twenties and stopped last year (I'm 29.)
I always has a really nice deep golden tan, but stopped because all good things come to an end...I was starting to notice the premature aging on my body....age spots, loss of risilience, etc.
It's been a year since I've stopped and boy my skin looks so much healthier. I still miss that wonderful glow I had, so I revisted self tanners. Now, keep in mind I had tried every single one in the book back in highschool and no matter how well I followed the directions, the tan came out uneven and fake looking...the streaks...the staining...the blotches...and don't even get me started on that rancid self tanner smell.
Right now I am trying Jergen's Natural Glow. It came out last year. It is an everyday moisturizer with a self tanning component in it. I am having a lot of luck with it. It builds up gradual within a week, but no streaks and the color is really nice....no orange. The smell is not as bad as I remember them being but I can definitely notice it. There is a competitor product by Loreal called Sublime Glow (the everday moisturizer with a self tanner) not the straight self tanner product that they also have. I hear the smell is not as bad as the Jergens product. It just came out so I am having a problem finding it.
Anyone else a self tanner out there with experiences and product recos to share?

I tried the Jergens Natural Glow for a few days last summer and liked it. It evened out and enhanced the tan I had at the time. I stopped using it, though, because I was afraid that my body would get lots darker than my face, and I didn't want to put it on my face. What are potential ways around that problem?

I can never get used to the Jergens smell. I feel like it gets on my clothes and my sheets. Plus, it seems thick and sticky. It is a good product though in terms of how well it works.
I just bought some Sublime Glow gradual stuff yesterday. It smelled a little better, but I haven't tried it yet. I will report back my scientific findings ;) I wanted to try the Sublime Glow in the aerosal can (real tanner, not the moisturizer) but I chickened out.
Sposa- Jergen makes a product for the face now to go along with the Natural Glow but I haven't tried it.
Has anyone tried Tantowels?

I saw the Jergens face natural glow product yesterday when I purchased a tube of the Sublime Glow moisturizer for med skin. I didn't buy it but plan to use the SG today for the first time and will too let you know how I find it.
Gosh though, my tan looks awesome from the Jergens stuff...if only I could get over the smell (although not as bad as other self tanners...I am just really sensitive to that smell.) I also agree it can be sticky at times...

I too, used to be a bed tanner. . . and since I developed a touch of rosacea like skin on my face, decided maybe I should quit. . . . though I'm bad in the summer and don't generally wear SPF (I rarely burn in natural light). I'm also pregnant right now, so tanning is really not an option!
Another vote here for Jergen's self-tanner! The smell isn't great, but it's not horrid, either. I saw the face stuff out the other day, and decided not to but it. . . . but probably will next time!
For an actual self tanner, I like California Tan products. California Tan is a company that makes lotions for beds, but also has a line of self-tanning products and bronzers. They give you a fantastic dark bronze look--a little goes quite a long ways. . . . which is good, considering it's fairly pricey. Takes a little bit to dry, but otherwise, well worth it. It lasts for quite a while. In the winter, I usually just stick to Jergen's so I don't look too dark, but in the summer, I will be using California Tan once a week, and then maintaining it with the Jergen's. I used this approach last year and it seemed to work really well! (Except, of course, the weeks I got lazy and it faded!)

Another Jergen's natural glow product user. I am very pale and stay out of the sun. Even though the smell wasn't the best it faded once I applied it and it gave me a nice light "tan". I plan to use it again this spring/summer.

Ladies! I just tried Sublime Glow....makes me want to toss my Jergens...almost no "self tanner smell" and dries much quicker with no "residue." The real trick will be to see how the tan color progresses. Most of my color is from Jergens now. I hope the color isn't more orange. The Jergens is a nice deep bronze...no orange.

I was using Sally Hansens spray on tan. It lasts for 7 days. I like it while it's intact but geez if I miss a day about putting it on it starts to come off and now I look werid. I'm letting it fade away b/c I dont like it. I want to try something else. But goodness it can get annoying. I sooo much prefer a tanning bed or a laying out but it's not healthy that is why I'm trying to avoid it. Maybe I'll give the jergens a try.

I tried the Sublime Bronze yesterday. I have two layers on. I am DEFINITELY darker. Well, to me at least. The color looks good, but I do have a few streaks. This product is less gradual than Jergens. I have some splotches and lines, but I wasn't really careful when I put it on. Lesson learned!

I miss my tanning bed days. I do still tan on occasion, but have tried to do only self tanner. First, I love mystic tanning - works great, like the color, but only lasts about two-three days for me. It's about $20 a pop for where I go, so I'd prefer to find one I can apply myself.
I agree about Jergens - I can't stand the smell. It's not too strong but it's there and when I notice it, I feel like I reek.
My MIL swears by the towelettes - however, it looks very streaky on her and I can totally tell. I don't have the heart to tell her to stop using them so much.
Thanks for the reviews on Sublime Glow! I will have to try that.
Lastly - I bought Olay Quench Radiance Reviver thinking it was a Jergens competitor. But it's not a self tanner (so don't be fooled). The smell reminds me of a cleaning product - bleh.

I used the Jergen's lotion last summer with good results so I picked up some this past weekend...and the face lotion as well. I'm a little nervous to try the face lotion as I have problematic skin and the last thing I need are a bunch of zits.
I do have a question though, do any of you have problems with the Jergens on your feet? I put it on my feet and it seems to take differently to the top of my foot. It looks way more "tan in a bottley" than I would like. but only on the top of my feet. Since I wear sandals a lot in the summer, I don't want to not "tan" them as that would look funny too. I tried using less product and made sure to rub it in very evenly. I guess my skin must be different there?

I use the Estee Lauder dark face tanner (not the bronzing but the regular). It has a great color but the problem is that #1 it's pretty expensive and #2 I have to apply like three coats just to get some color (and I'm using the dark!).

I've tried it on my face too and didn't have a bad result. I believe it has the same active ingredients that the face version has...most likely the face version is created with a more ligher face lotion than the body version since it has to cover more surface area.

Any face tanner recommendations?
I really like Clinque's regular face tanner (NOT the tinted kind). It is white in color and very liquid-y (not like lotion). I put it on my face and neck before I go to bed at night. I've used it for years and I like the color a lot. Depending on how thick you apply, depends on the deepness of the tan. I usually use a thin layer. It's around $15. Highly recommend it.
The only con is the smell. This is why I use it at night. That way I can wash my face in the morning and wash off the smell.

I purchased the Jergen's stuff last night. I didn't really notice the smell, but then again I've tried countless products which have all had a super strong smell. My biggest fear with any product is that it will look orange, especially considering that any tanning I get (which is very little) has a reddish tint to it. I just wanted to post an update girls...
So far I have tried the following Gradual Tan/Everyday Lotion types of products:
Jergens Natural Glow
Loreal Sublime Glow Lotion
Oil of Olay Touch of Sun
I have to say, so far I am really liking the Oil of Olay. The color is very nice and the scent is almost non existent. I'd say it is a keeper! Wasn't a big fan of the Jergens because of the scent (although color was nice.) I thought the Loreal color was a little orange and streaked (although scent was slightly better than Jergens.) I have yet to try the Dove energy glow. I might try it out of curiosity sake but the Olay product is living up to its promises...so...not much motivation to move on to something else.

Hi Kari,
Actually with the new kind of every day lotion that delivers a gradual tan, leading up to the full tan, there is much less risk of staining than the straight self tanners.
You just apply like you would a body lotion, but don't spot moisturize--make sure you cover all areas of the body to ensure a nice even tan.
The formulas are much different than staright self tanners and I have dressed immediatly after application with no streaks or staining...although it is probably best to wait until the lotion has sunk in enough to ensure a nice even application.

Heidi9771 thanks! I am going to have to try the Jergens stuff.
Cool! I'd try to Oil of Olay version (or Dove per neatgrlie) if you want to try it out. This seems to have less odor and a more natural tan.

I put the Jergens on last night and I can see a hint of color this morning. It is a dark tan for me after two applications, but I am really fair skinned normally.

It isn't a tinted lotion...the results are not immediate...it is more like a lotion with a touch of self tanner that works over the course of 1-7 applications. Full effect is usually seen if you use it daily for a week...most people see results after the 2nd day.

I usually see a change within a few hours of the first application. I see significant change when I use it on consecutive days.

My mom has been using this with good results. I used it when I was home for two days and then had to buy my own!
It is more gradual than the Sublime Bronze stuff I tried, but will build up color. My mom actually puts it on after her shower and wears it all day-that is how little it smells! I never smelled her at all, even when I was trying to. Well, if I put my nose directly on her arm I could. ;) It is a lot thinner than some of the other ones (esp. Jergens) and dries pretty fast. You do have to be careful because it will streak. I got sloppy and just kind of rubbed it on like regular lotion, and I got a few streaks. That was my fault though.
I think it is about $8.
I like the Sublime Bronze I posted earlier, but I have found as it wears off, it does not wear off evenly. Like if I don't put any on for a week, I will have these patches of dark where my skin is dry. Not terribly cute.
Super glad I found this thread. I'm a self tanner but would like to move to the gradual everyday/lotion type products.
Heidi and others using these, are you still having to loofa real good EVERYDAY to enable a smooth application like the other self tanners? And do any of these products have an SPF in them or is that asking a bit much?
I LOVE Aveeno products. I wonder how it works?

I've been trying the Hawaiian Tropics Island Glow lotion plus self-tanner. It's actually working quite well on me. I've applied three times this week (not consistently by any means) and I've noticed a nice color, especially on my arms. I'm going to try it more intensively this week as I want a bit of tan for prom (I'm a chaperone but I love to tell my students that I'm tanning for prom :D ).
The smell isn't bad. I hardly notice it at all, but I do apply at night. I'll let you know about this in a few more days.

Ok, I've read the entire thread through twice, to get a recommendation on the best product to try, and to get an idea of how I am supposed to apply it. I have a reeeeally stupid question though, in regards to applying it - I have a real fear of being streaky or splotchy, and so I have to ask -
When you're applying it, do you put it on all the way up to your chin? I mean, I would assume if you're using face stuff on your face, you would be applying the body stuff all the way up? I'm just thinking of potential problem areas where it might be a giveaway that I haven't applied evenly - I am VERY pale right now, and would hate to have white spots giving me away like a neon sign. ;)
I would really love to be able to use a self-tanner on a regular basis, so I can stop feeling so pasty, but I'm simply not comfortable doing the tanning bed thing since my dad had a melanoma removed a couple of years ago, which was *this close* to one of his lymph nodes. :(

I use these as part of my daily shower...exfoliating gloves! I put them on and then lather them up with soap and cleanse/exfoliate at the same time.
http://www.folica.com/images/products/695-P8287.gif
I have never not used them so I am not sure what the results would be w/out some sort of daily exfoliation. These lotions tend to be very forgiving (especialy the Olay) so it would probably be less risky if you didn't exfoliate everyday. Of course, if you have dry flaky skin, you could run into probs!
I am curious about the Aveeno...add it to my list of the Dove version to try!

That looks interesting. It looks like many of the companys are getting in on the game! I like the fact that there is a version for light and medium skin tones. So many to try now! I think this is good that the companies have competition...maybe it will make them work harder to perfect the best self tanning lotion. ;)

Lastly - I bought Olay Quench Radiance Reviver thinking it was a Jergens competitor. But it's not a self tanner (so don't be fooled). The smell reminds me of a cleaning product - bleh.
I know this was from a while ago, but this lotion (now renamed "Touch of Sun") is indeed a self-tanner. And it has the distinctive smell of self-tanners. I think it works well, but I won't be buying another one when I'm done--I only bought this because no one around me had the Natural Glow last summer. I'll try the Dove next.

I am currently using touch of sun...I won't lie, I have yet to use any of these new types of body lotions that do not have some type of "self tanner" smell to them, but out of the three I have tried (Olay, Jergens, Loreal), the Olay definitely had the least self tanner smell. I have yet to try the Aveeno or Dove, and would love to hear what other people think of them.
I went ahead and got the Aveeno since I love all of their other products. It definitely doesn't smell bad but doesn't smell good either. To me it smells like a light version of the self tanners (and I have mostly use the Neutrogena products). So it sounds like it smells like all of the others.
This is my first try with the lotion/self tanner and I did notice it goes on a little thicker than a regular lotion.
It also comes in a light skin and darker skin version.
I'll keep you posted on my "tan."

Oh, I have nothing to compare it to but tanners of the past, but I was just trying to say it is definitely a self-tanner because it smelled like self-tanner (not to mention I got darker). If you look on Olay's webpage, it is the same product as the newer "Touch of Sun". It's not as if I can smell it just sitting here, but putting it on, it does smell.

I wash my hands after use...otherwise I have noticed a bit of concentrated color in between my fingers.
Otherwise...I have not noticed darker color where skin is a bit thicker/drier such as the elbows, ankles or feet...but I exfoliate those areas pretty frenquently which is why I may not have the problem.
Not sure if Olay has a face product...

I really don't mind the smell of Jergens, however I have only been using it on my legs as my arms/face will tan just from everyday being outside. I will say I did like the smell of the Olay. It has a slight selftanner smell but I found it to be fairly pleasent.

I bought the Dove version on Saturday. I've given it at least a couple of days before commenting. I don't like it at all. I prefer the Jergens stuff.
The Dove stuff streaks on me, like the sunless tanning stuff I used to use in the past. It's very noticeable and it looks awful. I also have that 'sticky' feeling afterwards.
I used Jergens all summer last year without any streaking and it looked really natural. I am going back to Jergens. And quite honestly, the smell of the Jergen stuff doesn't bother me, I can't tell that it smells bad. Ahhaa.
I just purchased the Jergens for face so I'll give a review once I try that.

This morning there is extremely faint color. I am using the Fair kind and I am starting out very, very white. Haven't noticed streaks yet. Maybe I should go buy the Jergens, right now it's 2 for $10 at my local grocery store. Just in case I don't like this. My sister told me ysterday she used the Jergens with no streaks or problems and the smell really was not bad. The kind for faces gave her a rash tho.
After nearly a week using the Aveeno product I like it but probably need the darker skin version. It definitely isn't sticky. You can get dressed almost immediately even though I don't. Really no smell to speak of and definitely no streak although I am good about removing dry skin when I use these products. I definitely has a light tan.
I saw yesterday that Bath & Body works has a similar product as well.

UPDATE on Hawaiian Tropics Island Glow:
I've been using the medium and to be honest, I have only faint color. To be fair though, it's not like I religiously apply it each night. I have noticed streaks, but only on my shin bones. I can't decide if it's because I'm particularly boney there or if it's an exfoliation thing.
I'll probably see it through to the end of this tube. Hell, I don't know... maybe Jergens is worth a try.

I bought the Jergens, also felt the same way as most of you about the smell and I wasn't crazy about the weird feeling I had all over after applying. I got a sample of the Dove and was going to try it, but after seeing that it leaves a sticky feeling am a little nervous. I would love to hear how the B&B stuff works! I also may break down and do a spray tan before graduation because my dress is black and I look really pale!

So far I actually really like the Bath and Body works. Zero tanner smell and the color is fairly equivalent to the Jergens. The lotion is also a little thicker than the Jergens, which is nice for my dry skin, but it still dries quickly and absorbs well.

I've been using Jergens for almost 2 weeks. Honestly, the smell doesn't bother me at all. But, I can't tell that I that much more tan. Also, my skin seems to be reacting to it. I'm starting to feel dry and itchy and have a couple of irritated spots (almost like a mosquito bite or a rash). I figured I would switch from daily application to every-other-day and see if the "itchiness" goes away.
Anyone else feel this way or do I just have really sensitive skin? FWIW, once I moved from the SE to the NE three years ago, my skin has been really sensitive and the only body lotion that makes it better is the Body Shop's body butters. Maybe I'm just not meant to be "tan"?

I picked up L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Moisturizer in medium a few weeks ago and really like it. I have to admit that when I first apply it the scent reminds me a little bit of an elephant hut. Kind of like hay or something. But it fades quickly and there is no hint of any smell at all during the day which is what I really love. The color is also fantastic. So far I give it a big thumbs up over Jergens which I used religiously last year.

Do you apply the lotion to your whole body, or just your arms/legs? If you cover your whole body, then do you have someone else do your back? I don't think I could get DH to put lotion on my back every day, but I don't want it to look weird to just have arms/legs...

I looked at the bath and body works line today. I didn't realize that it was the breathe line. I had a bad experience with the non tanning lotion of that line, so I decided against trying the gradual tanner.

(I bought it for when I Mystic Tan and I love it!).
This is only my first year trying the lotion gradual tanners. Which makes me somewhat of a self tanner expert I think.
I have to say they have come a long way over the years and many of the manufacturers (especially Neutrogena) have made really great improvements. They don't smell so bad anymore and I haven't been orange in years!! ;)
They are simply a lot of work though if you want to avoid streaks, buildup, dark patches, etc. And you have to keep them up.

Hi ladies,
Just a quick update on the Bath and Body works version. Here is my take:
Pros:
-The scent is great...probably the best of any I have tried.
-Provides a slight shimmer
Cons:
-Hardly any color, and what little color there is, it seems a bit orange.
- Pricey at $14.50
Think I will stick to my Olay after I finish this tube...but am tempted to try the Aveeno!

Hi everyone--I am going to Las Vegas in a couple weeks for my birthday and am expecting to get some pool time in. I usually use Clarins self-tanner and love it, but am thinking about trying a drugstore brand to save a little $$$.
I've been skimming this thread--if you had to pick ONE of the readily available drugstore tanners, which one is the best? Dove? Thanks!

Last year, I was using the Jergens gradual tan tanner. When I went to purchase it again this year, I saw that there was a drugstore generic brand right next to it. Jergens was $7.99 and the drugstore brand was $3.99, so I gave it a try. It works just as good, and I think smells even better.
When going to the beach, I use Lancome Soleil, a self-tanner that has a good shimmery color and contains sunscreen.
Wendalah we're mostly talking about the lotions that have some self tanner in them. There's a big difference in that they provide a very gradual tan. True self tanners provide more of an immediate tan.
If you want a self tanner comparable to Clarins you want a true self tanner and I highly recommend the Neutrogena line.

You know, you can always take a straight up self tanner and mix in a little body lotion to cut it. That's pretty much all Jergens Natural Glow is.
Also wanted to say I've been using Estee Lauder's Go Bronze for the face, and I'm pretty happy with it. I only use the tiniest amount, and it gives me just a little bit of glow. If I use too much, there's definite Oompah-Loompah-ness going on, but just a little looks nice.

Thanks for the advice--I will try Neutrogena--another quick question? I haven't self-tanned in a couple years and I recently lightened my (previously medium blond) hair to platinum blond. Self-tanner didn't discolor my hair when I just had highlights, but I'm worried now since my hair is so uniformly light--should I use something to protect my hairline?
Wendalah I am also a blonde and I have in fact got it (the neutrogena) in my hair. I don't recommend it. I generally just try and be real careful right around my hairline but putting something protective over it is probably your best bet.

Vaseline around the hairline would probably work.

Sorry for not searching better but I have to make this quick due to a cranky baby. I skimmed through but didn't see anything.
I'm really pale, so everything I've tried has turned me orange although I haven't used one in a couple of years. Anyone else really pale and not get an orangy hue?

Chad and Liz - I've been using Jergens Natural Glow for fair complexions, and it isn't orangey at all. I was blindingly white before, and I don't look like I have a deep tan now--it's sort of more beige. I like it! Some ppl don't like the smell, but it doesn't bother me.

Hopefully this is not too off topic :). I am leaving for vacation soon and although I like the Jergen's Natural Glow, I wanted something a bit deeper since I will be in a swimsuit. I decided to do Mystic Tan. I have done it several times before, but only once a time. Now I am wondering if it makes sense to go several consecutive times right before I leave. I went last night. Would it be ok to go tonight and the next night? I don't want to look weird, but I want the color to last, kwim? I am using Level 1 (the lighter color) when I go. Any thoughts? TIA!
lee60657 I did this right before my wedding. I did it once a week for 3 consecutive weeks as opposed to several days in a row though. This worked well for me.
Sounds like you'll definitely be dark fast if you go 3 consecutive days but I don't know if this will make it last any longer since it mostly comes off as you shed skin. And if you are going to a beachy location it will come off very quickly!!

ktsb: thanks for the info. I am not sure how dark I would get, I can tell after the first one, but noone else really can. I am pretty pale so I need all the help I can get. I think I will go tonight again and see how the color looks in the morning. Any ideas or tips to make the color last longer? I thought about using Jergens Natural Glow each day to keep some color. I wonder it that would work or if I would look like an Oompa Loompa
Keeping your skin well moistened is one way to hold the tan longer. I know when I did the mystic tan there was a lotion product they gave me that supposedly lengthened the tan. Could have been a gimmick though because it was expensive.
You know I don't see any real harm in using the Jergens product just to keep the tan longer. My only little concern would be that the two colors somehow don't hit each other well.
lee60657
05-16-2006, 12:54 PM
ktsb: hmmm...I will ask about a lotion to extend the color, but if it is really expensive I will just make sure to keep my skin well moisturized. I think I will try the Jergens too ....I use the fair skined one, so it really does not provide too much color.
I feel your pain! I used to tan all the time, loved the warmth of the tanning bed but early this year i was diagnosed with basil cell skin cancer on a few different spots of my body and can no longer tan and I am only 29 yars old. I hate the self tanners due to the way they smell but have recently started using Nuetrogena and love it. They have both the spray mist and lotion and is the least smelling of anything i have tried while not turning you orange either.

Need help quick!
I got sunburned this past weekend and I have a bad v-neck like tan and farmers tan and OF COURSE I have a wedding to go to this weekend and the dress I was going to wear is a little lower than the tan ends. Is there a sunless tanner that will actually work in just certain areas without making me orange (i'm super pale)?

Ok, back to review the Bare Escentuals "Faux Tan."
http://images-p.qvc.com/is/image/a/99/a56099.001?$moreviewmain$
I LOVE this stuff!!! Hands down, it's the best self-tanner I've tried. (Next to Mystic, which I also love).
-There is NO yucky smell! The gel-lotion smells like yummy almonds, but even that quickly disappears.
-The color is glorious! I am very pale (think redhead with glowing white skin and blue veins) and this is the perfect color. I'm guessing if you needed a deeper color you could do more applications.
-It's tinted, which really helps with the application. I will say, I was a little freaked out when I first put it on- it looks sort of olive; kind of like you are spreading a seaweed mask over your legs. However, it was very easy to see where I needed to smooth it out, where I missed a spot, etc. The olive color faded away within 15 minutes or so.
-I'm on day 2 and the color is perfect, even around the tough areas like my feet.
-The only downside is that it's kind of pricy. 4.5 oz is $22.
-I followed the directions carefully- spread it on quickly, avoided contact with water for an hour or so, exfoliated beforehand, and really washed my palms and fingers (with soap) to get every trace off.
I'll be using this all summer!

lee On the Mystic, I think going twice at level 1 would be good, and I have extended the tan by moisturizing well and using self tanner. Usually if I want a bit deeper color, I do the level 2.

Okay - I had to come in here to plug in word for the Vaseline tanner. Love it love it love it!
I was going to stick with Jergens since I used it all summer last year but since everyone's been complaining about the smell I thought I try something else. And funny thing is, the smell never bothered me until I read all these comments and I went back and really paid attention - and it doesn't smell too nice. Ahaha!
Anyways, I've also tried the Dove stuff and wrote a review on it a couple pages back. Did not like Dove.
The Vaseline gives me a real nice tan, it looks so real. And no streaking, no smell, does not feel sticky. Plus, it was cheaper than the Dove and also cheaper than Jergens I believe.
Here's my rating for what I've tried so far (1 being best) -
1) Vaseline
2) Jergens
3) Dove

shopgirl, the Vaseline product sounds promising (and less expensive!) I am going to have to try it out.
Ahhh...I broke down and stopped using the Bath and Body Works version. I still have half a tube left, but it just didn't work. The color was hardly there, and it just provided a light orange tint. I am back using my trusty Olay radiance. :) By the way, in last sunday's paper I found a coupon for $1 off the Olay.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in here yet, but I was told a few days ago about a product called Island Glow by Hawaiian Topic. It's a daily moisturizer formulated for certain skin tones (similar to Jurgens). It smells awesome and has really darkened my previously weak tan. I picked it up for $6-7 at Walmart. Just wanted to share!

I wanted to report back on my Mystic tan. I ended up going twice at level 1 and then I applied Jergen's Natural Glow each morning after I showered. It worked great. I got a very natural looking color which is hard since I am normally so pale.
The Vaseline and BE products sound interesting, I may try another one once my tube of Jergen's runs out. Also wanted to add that I have the Jergen's Natural Glow for the face and it works well. No streaking or uneveness.

Update on the L'Oreal Sublime Glow... I love the color that this stuff is giving me, too. I find that if I am good about exfoliating (which is prob. true with every tanner) the color is just fab. Really brownish and not orangy at *all*. Love. And I will kind of take back what I said before about it smelling like elephant hut when your first put it on. At least there is NO carry it with you smell like the Jergens. (Why do I feel so guilty bashing them when they DID give us the first break through tanner/moisturizer after all.......)

I just got the Vaseline version, and it is stickier than the Olay. The smell is about the same. It's not as thick (I have the Olay for dry skin), but I prefer the Olay nonetheless.

So I am chiming in here. I read the whole thread after I bought the Loreal Sublime Glow since it was 2-for-1 at Ulta. The smell isn't bad and I can't comment on the color since I only used it twice but what I hated about it was looking like a princess glitter fairy! I am going to be 31 and don't need to wear glitter lotion everyday  So at lunch I am returning the Loreal (got to love Ulta's return policy) and getting some of the Vaseline. I will be back to report on this one after I use it for a week or so. I desperately need it as my legs are the same pasty color as the khaki capris I am wearing. Nothing screams "get a tan" like that does!

Has anyone used the Target brand daily glow moisturizer? I bought it today and the smell is much better than Jergens. I'm a little leary about how it will work because I haven't had a lot of luck with Target moisturizers and lotions in the past.

The L'oreal Sublime Tinted Tanning Lotion does have glitter in it. It is horrible!!
I use and LOVE LOVE the L'oreal Sublime GEL. It dries quick, gives a great color, is inexpensive and lasts pretty long- like 5 days....I use the L'oreal Sublime Spray on my back, and after I wash my hands I lightly spray it on the back of my hands. I tried the spray all over my body and looked like a zebra. I hated it. I have been self tanning for ayears and years and consider myself almost an expert!!!
2 thumbs up.

Jumping in here since I've purchased Jergens and L'Oreal in the last two weeks.
I like the consistency of the Jergens, but it is awfully smelly - much like using a full-on self tanner. I got the Fair version of it and it took about three days of apps to really see some color. (I'm a very fair skinned brunette.)
Since I'm terrible about putting this stuff on everyday, and I hate to walk around smelling like chemicals so I usually do it at night, I decided to experiment and bought the Medium version of the L'Oreal. Best experiment ever!
The Medium gives me a little extra color without all the waiting and daily applications, BUT, it's not as dark as a full-on self tanner where mistakes are obvious. The smell of L'Oreal is nice but it is a little sticky.
I really want to try the Hawaiian Tropic version mentioned above but I haven't been able to find it locally yet.
On my second tube of the Aveeno. I moved to the darker skin version and it's equally as wonderful. I rarely smell anything at all and it's only a tad darker.

LABride2004, I also have Bare Escentuals Faux Glow and had it work really well once and ok the other 2 times. I'm trying to figure out how to improve my application. How long do you leave it on before you shower? Once I left it on for 1.5 hours and the whole thing came off in the shower. Once I left it on for 2.5 hours and it only lasted 2 days. Once I left it on overnight and I was orange the next morning. What's the magical time? Also, how long does this last on you? Thanks!!!

It's pretty expensive. . . $58 a bottle. . . BUT, it claims to last 2 weeks!!! Even if you had to re-apply once very lightly, that would totally be worth it. . . it'd last several months!
Thanks!

I'll have to try that! I switched last year from Jergens to the Vaseline version, but I can’t get used to their smell. I've also used L'oreal Sublime GEL and liked the results but the smell again is my problem w/ it.

My Redbook just came in the mail, and it has a little feature on sunless tanners. They stripe a gal's back with 6 different kinds. Unfortunately, I have to say, the Jergens one is the most orangey looking of all of them (but not bad by any means). If I didn't have the others to compare to as a reference point, I probably wouldn't have even noticed. I inspected the picture closely under a lamp, LOL.
Two that I'm interested in from this article are Chanel Soeil Identite Perfect Colour Body Self Tanner ($45) and Banana boat Summer Color Self-Tanning Mist ($9.75). Anyone had any experience with those? The St. Ives one is a good price too, and is another daily use tanner.
Glad to hear the Aveeno one is great! I was wondering about that one.
Question: Does anyone else have a hard time getting their neck and collarbone area tan using a self-tanner? What do you do about it? No matter what I use/do, that area never tans very well. Thanks!

Sally Hansen "Smooth Glow" (http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100260&navAction=jump&navCount=0&id=prod3178626)- I found this in the nail care section of Walgreens. They are marketing it as "stubble reducing lotion" but it's basically a moisturizer with a subtle self tanner. If you use it every day, you get a very natural looking tan after 3-4 days. Smells very nice too.

Just wanted to comment on the glitter....I bought the Loreal not realizing that there was "glitter" in it. IMO, it's not very noticeable and I didn't think it looked tacky at all. (I'm 37) And, I am one of those people that tries very hard to dress age appropriate.
Anyway, so far the Loreal is my fav - no smell, nice color, etc. I think saying it has glitter in it is really a stretch.....it's more like the little sparkles that come in many bronzers you put on your face. Not very noticeable.

Thanks cocopop! I'll give that one a shot. Hopefully it can keep my neck and face nicely tanned.
Has anyone Mystic tanning lately? Does it really only last a week? One of my co-workers has done it twice and she looks really great. Not overly tanned but a nice summer glow. The only reason I'm hesitating is the price. I think she paid $25 for one session or you can pay $50 a month for unlimited sessions. I don't think I'd have time to go every week and I'd hate to waste $25 for a week worth of tan.
I use Jergens self-tanner when I have time although it does get a little splotchy around my feet if I'm not really careful. My all-time favorite self-tanner is still Clarins though. It doesn't have any kind of smell and really gives you an even tan.

Lilo-I did Mystic Tan once about a month ago. Mine lasted about two weeks but I used AVON's self-tanning spray to help it last longer. I personally loved Mystic tan as it was so easy and I didn't get any streaking at all. I went to a place called Palm Beach Tan and I know they are nationwide. For one session it cost $25 and for 3 sessions it was only $60. I don't know how much it would cost for a monthly membership but in my research they had the best price in my area for the 3 visit special. Just thought I would let you know my experience.

Mystic Tanning Question
I did a Mystic Tan two weeks ago and I really liked the color and the fact that my body was not streaked. I watched the video before I did it and they said to use a dime sized amount of the barrier cream on your hands and feet. I followed their directions and used that amount but when my tan appeared the next day my hands and feet were orange and nasty.
I have a wedding on Saturday and I had planned to do it again but I am afraid of what my hands and feet will look like. Does lathering your hands and feet with the cream keep them from getting orange. Have you done a mystic tan and had normal looking hands and feet?

My feet are always funky after the mystic. It's either tan or white. Here's what I do - I use the barrier cream on my hands and feet (more than a dime). I cover outside and undersides of both. After I get out, I wash my hands in the sink and also wash my feet with a papertowel (careful not to touch my wrists or legs with the water). When I get home, I use Aveeno lotion with the subtle self tanner on my hands and feet. It makes things more even. It's quite the process but it works best for me!

I did something similar to vwinkel. I slathered my hands and feet with the cream (that is what they told me to do). I then wash both off afterwards careful not to get anywhere else wet. I then use AVON's self tanner spray on my feet. I usually don't have a problem with my hands.

I love the Glow Fusion but it's an expensive habit to keep up.
I'm currently trying the Banana Boat Everyday Glow Daily Moisturizer ("Hint of Color"). I like it but I wouldn't use it if you really want a tan -- it's very, very subtle.
I am loving Jergens Express self-tanner. I have fairly pale skin and I get color on my body within one day whereas the regular Jergens would take a few days to get a good color. I like their regular (meaning not express) self-tanner for the face too.
I've done Mystic Tan a few times and I have to say, I'm not impressed. The color is always off on me and I can't stand the smell.
