My niece is 10 and she broke her elbow on Friday. I want to send her something, but I want to send more than a card. I've been looking online and saw some cute teddy bears, but they were like $75. Then I wondered if she would still like teddy bears - or if she thinks they are "babyish". I am looking to spend under $50 if possible.
Anyone have any ideas??

Flowers? My dad sent me flowers for my 11th birthday, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
What about making a bear at buildabear.com? You could do it for less than $50 there.

Thanks emschwar! I found one on there for only $40 and it has a cast on its arm! Thanks!

My older 12-year-old has been asking for a build-a-bear for at least a year, so I think that a teddy bear should be a good idea. Did you get it or are you still looking for ideas?
My 12-year-olds suggested a movie or a book. (I mentioned that it might be nice to get something that they could do without needing to move around a lot.) For a particular idea, they all recently watched Bambi II and loved it.
My children also love craft supplies, card-making supplies, stamps.
(Of course, if you're looking to have something delivered, these ideas might not work out.)

I just talked to my mom and she said Maddie thinks she's too old for teddy bears, so I'll check out flowers. Any other ideas?

How long will she be "resting"? Enough time to send her an amazon gift card and let her order some books or whatever herself?
What about a gift basket from popcorn factory filled with yummy treats?

I second the book idea. Teen fiction, maybe some puzzle books, that kind of thing?
Along with the cute bear with the cast, of course!

She loves to read, so the book idea would be good too. Maybe I should just go to the store tomorrow and put together a big care package. That way I can do the candy, books, movies all in one.

Can't go wrong with a care package! In a really cute basket that she can use for something else later. And maybe a small stuffed animal? I don't care how old a girl is, you're never too old for a teddy bear when you don't feel good.

Good idea! I'm sure I can find lots of things to help occupy her time.
Sorry, Em. I'm not sure how long she'll be resting. I just got a quick call about it last night, so I don't really know any of the details.

Movies and a goodie basket filled with movie type snacks?

This is my suggestion, too.
If she's having to wear a sling also, maybe you could find her a really cute one (or two) in her favorite colors - instead of standard white. Something fashionable for her tween sensibilities. :D
ETA: Some cute slings...

That last website has cast covers, too: http://www.brokenbeauties.com/fashion-new/castcovers-arm.php

When my 12 year old cousin had back surgery, I sent her a cookie bouquet and she's still talking about it! She loved it and you can get the cutest stuff to go with it!

I broke my elbow when I was a kid. It sucks! I think you should make a basket with some entertainment/anti-boredom stuff. I would put a DVD in it, some snacks, possibly a funny book on tape, and some nail polish/stuff her friends could do for her.
I dislocated my elbow at age 12, and would've loved books, magazines, or movies. Anything to keep busy. :)

After getting stitches in my lip around the same age (maybe 12-13?), I received a hand made card from a neighbor. I thought it was the coolest thing ever that someone would take the time to do that. (my mom and her friends aren't really crafty type people, so I hadn't even really heard of people making cards when they could just buy them) Not sure if you're into that kinda thing, but just throwing it out there.
