Professional Belly Shots

I'm trying to decide if I want to get pro belly shots done or not. They are expensive, but they just might be worth it. Anyone what to share why they did or didn't get them done? If you have any photos to share that would be wonderful too :)

I am glad I had them done when I was pg with DD and I will probably get them done again this time, but DD will be in the pics with me. The only regret I have it that I bought many of the poses because I couldn't decide. I had them up a few months but then the house became filled with pics of DD. I still have a cute series of 3 belly pics in DD's room and I think one other pic downstairs, but the rest are all in a box. Just don't buy too many. You'll want pics of your baby more than your belly after a few months. ;) Good luck.

I didn't have maternity photos done for my first pregnancy, mainly because I figured we were already handing our firstborn's inheritance over to Graco and Fisher Price, so why take on the added expense? The second time around, though, I thought it would be a nice excuse to do family photos at the same time. It was sweet getting pictures of my toddler in with the Featured Belly Shots. We're using one of the "older kid/pre-born kid" photos in our new baby's birth announcements.

Lan~ Hi Stranger!!!! It has been FOREVER since we chatted! I thought I had heard around the 'other' boards taht you were expecting again. Congrats!! I think by now you've already HAD the baby. Do fill me in though! I'm over in LJ (Lisa_Jason) too. I can't believe how big M*** is (to protect her and your privacy)... she's grown into such a beautiful little girl - and to think I remember posting in her journal when she was first born!

I also had a baby last year, my youngest, Payton just turned 1 last week. So now we have TWO girls. Amazing how time flies.

Those are beautiful pictures blessed!

We didn't get professional shots done. I wanted to, but DH didn't really think it was worth it and I guess I didn't want it enough to talk him into it. We did take our own shots at 40 weeks and we got a few that I really loved. That said, we haven't done anything with those shots. It's like when we were engaged, we did this engagement shoot and got some great shots and now I have the prints just lying around now. I'm glad I have them, but I don't do anything with them. I think that's how I would have felt about professional belly shots. I wouldn't have regretted getting them done, but I wouldn't really be doing anything with the photos now.

I am definitely glad that we did document the pregnancy, and it was a fun project for DH & I to do when I was already at my due date!

Well...I think they are totally worth it, but also believe you can do them well yourself!

I did mine at 36 weeks on my own with a digital camera and a sheet hanging behind me. Here's a couple to give you an idea:

I had mine done at Glamourshots - yeah cheesy - but relatively inexpensive. The only problem was that it took a lot longer than I had the energy for by 34 weeks!

I bought several but I'm not sure I'll ever display them - not sure. They're hysterical to look at now, though. I was a WHALE!

We had my SIL take pictures of us while I was in my last month of pregnancy. I liked how they turned out. I'll definitely do them again next time but don't think that we'll go the professional route. We were quite happy with the way they turned out with SIL taking them. We did some in color and some in black & white.

It's so good to run into everyone again! I wasn't on the WC much in the last year or so, but I hope to pop by these Family forums more often. As for me, I had another baby, a little boy, last month. We're hoping he takes after his sister, who remains as spiritied and fun as ever. M. is two and a half now.

Any mommies-to-be reading this thread, don't wait too long for them! I had mine scheduled for my 37th week, because I wanted a big ol' belly for them. Certainly wasn't complaining at the time, but it wasn't obvious I was pregnant until about 28-29 weeks. Before then, I just looked like I'd tossed back too many cheeseburgers. DD got here before the appointment did!

ITA with BTB for other reasons! My face just started swelling that week so I don't quite look like myself, a double chin came outta nowhere, and I couldn't wear my wedding rings (which was very disappointing to me).
I had 2 weeks to go, and should have done them just a couple weeks earlier...

I did mine at 35 weeks, and I swear that within 2 or 3 days after that photo shoot, I just WAS NOT presentable anymore. I became freakishly large. I had originally planned to do them at 37 weeks, thinking "the bigger the belly, the better the picture." Yeah, <i>that</i> was dumb. Thank God my photographer is a woman with children of her own -- and knew better!

I debated it, but in the end I'm glad I didn't. Instead we opted to buy a solid black sheet ($2.49 @ Walmart), use the timer on our digital camera and had them printed through www.shutterfly.com. When all was said and done we ended up with 5 poses we loved and had printed for a grand total of less than $5.00.

I'm soooo glad that I decided to take some pictures with a professional photographer. They were pricey, but I'm still glad I had them done. My husband has been taking shots of me all along with our digital camera but it's nice to have pro pics.

I did my pictures at 33 weeks and like some of the other comments I would not wait too long - I'm 38 weeks now and bigger, more uncomfortable and slightly more swollen.

pontmarie, I recognized the Stanford Quad in your photos and then right-clicked on properties to see who your photographer was (that distinctive black frame isn't very common) and realized it was Alisha & Brook! We used them for our wedding and we LOVED them! Did you use them for your wedding, too? I had joked about getting them for belly shots when we married, but now I might actually be able to do that (in another 20-25 weeks!).

smiles33, no they didn't do my wedding :( I love Alisha's work, she's the one who does the belly/baby shots, although Brook also came to Stanford, they're so nice and laid back!

I agree with mia's mama in that I wish I'd waited a few more weeks because I also got way bigger. I'm 5'1", my son was almost 10 lbs at birth and I carried all forward so those last weeks my belly was rather a sight :D

I actually had Angelina like 5 days after the shoot! I haven't even seen the rest of them, but that's because I've been too busy to catch up with my photographer. I recommend having them done. We had our's taken at Target, nothing too fancy. But once your baby comes, you'll totally forget what you looked like pregnant. I had no idea I was so big until I look back on them now.

They won't think you're nuts. Just tell them you'd like to have some pics to remember this special time in your life. Photographers are generally open-minded. Chances are they've done/heard of pregnancy photos. Have fun! :)

A few questions...

1) We will be on vacation at Disney World (where we got arried) in a couple weeks, so I wrote to our wedding photographer to ask for a quote. He's asking $250, which would include the proofs. I thought it was reasonable, but wanted to see what others were charging. How much are photographers asking for pregnancy photo shoots?

2) I will be about 28 weeks... Do you think I should wait until later in my pregnancy instead? Then, I would have to find a photographer up here in Maryland. (It would be kinda special to have photos down at Disney, where DH and I were engaged and married.)

3) Finally, do you think it's better to have someone who is experienced with pregnancy portraits, or will any photographer do? This guy mainly does engagements, weddings, and some family portraits. He said he did some pregnancy photo shoots "years ago."

1. cant answer since mine were free (my friend is building her portfolio and wanted to use me as model!)

2. i took mine at 28w 6d (so really 29wks) but my photog thought i was still too small so she wants to re-shoot in a few weeks, but i think it would be pretty cool to have some pics where u guys got engaged and married! we took our first set in the baby's nursery so it was kinda special (no one will know its the nursery but we do!)

3. maybe it depends on what u are looking for - if u send him samples of the styles of pics u like - do u think he can use those as a guide?

Hey Lindy!

1. $250 is a great price, especially since it includes proofs. My shoot was $650 and did not include the proofs, but it did include a little memory book. Whatever.

2. Personally, I would wait longer because I think you'll be surprised at how much bigger your belly gets over just a few weeks towards the end. You saw my pics and I was exactly 33 weeks. BUT, that being said.....it's only $250 and it's where you got married so if the money is not a big issue, you might want to do it just to have them and if you want, you can always do more later.

3. I think you're better off with someone who has experience with this kind of photography because then they'll know better how to position you and stuff. But again - it's not a ton of money (of course that's all relative), so you may want to just go for it and see how they turn out.
