I actually quite like Woody Allen films, and especially Annie Hall, so there's hope for us yet! :p My husband likes to say that I just love films in general, because I can enjoy a total popcorn film as well as a total art-house film. I'm all over the map. It takes A LOT for me *not* to like a movie. Although sometimes I am disappointed in the big hype films like Forrest Gump or Legally Blonde----movies that everyone I know adores, and I just think are okay. Does that make sense?

The worst movies I have seen:
Pi & Cube - My husband made me watch these. He is obviously more cerebral than I, because I thought they were incredibly tedious and boring.
Once Around - You'd think after Always that another pairing of Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfus would be great... NOPE
Funny Farm - extremely UNfunny - I fell asleep in the theatre

Another total stinker that I can think of is a Steven Segal movie that I was dragged to by a friend from college. I think it's called 'The Fire Down Below.' So totally bad and unbelievable (things blow up left and right, but SS is completely unscathed.) that it's actually laughable!

There are so many movies I've hated-- and yet been forced to watch. The mention of "Boxing Helena" made me laugh... yes, that was terrible. So terrible that I'd completely blocked it out, actually.
Movies that I hated more than I can possibly explain:
Volcano (remember this piece of crap, anyone?)
Dogma (Kevin Smith sucks)
Waterworld (WHO thought this was a good movie idea?!)
Seven Years in Tibet (Or, as I like to call it, Seven Years in the Theatre)
The Rules of Attraction (I have no words for how shockingly awful this was)
Bad Movies by Directors I usually like:

Vanilla Sky
Movies I was fortunate enough to miss but my friends are STILL complaining about:
From Justin to Kelly
Rollerball
By the way I'm STUNNED that Groundhog Day is on a list or two! We actually had to study that in film school as an example of a perfectly structured comedy and it's widely loved among my peers here in Hollywood. Just goes to show that there's no one movie everyone will like!

katmg- I don't know if you've studied story structure at all, but we did quite a bit of that in our screenplay classes in college, using all sorts of different films as examples of when things work and when they don't, structurally. It's pretty dry stuff, but if you're interested, I recommend "Story" by Robert McKee. As I recall, Groundhog Day was used as an example of successful story arc (with the protagonist arcing from bitter and self-involved to hopeful and selfless. Personally, I think it's a very clear execution of a high concept idea-- there are no strings left dangling in the plot. However, whether or not the film is critically good doesn't mean everyone will like it. Lord knows I've disliked a lot of films that were well regarded, critically. So, I was just saying that I was surprised to see it on a "hate" list -- but not that those people who didn't like it aren't totally entitled to their opinion.
Was that a wordy enough answer for you? Ha ha! :p

I liked the storyline of Moulin Rouge and the absolute hilarity of some of the musical numbers. However, the cinematography made me literally sick to my stomach in some places. I can't handle the fast moving zoom shots or the "virtual reality ride-like" shots. I had to close my eyes during parts of the movie.

I hated Vanilla Sky and The Mummy Returns (mainly because I paid full price to see it), and was seriously disappointed in Eyes Wide Shut. I'm also probably the only person on Earth who didn't like Million Dollar Baby. I actually loved the first 2/3 of it, but hated the ending, and the fact that I was liking it up till then made the letdown even worse.
But my least favorite movie of all time has to be Your Friends and Neighbors. DH made me watch it when we were first dating, and I always tell him he's really lucky I didn't dump him right then. :)
Movies I like that other people have put on their least favorite list here:
Groundhog Day
Moulin Rouge
Pulp Fiction
Napoleon Dynamite
AI
Lost in Translation
Team America
Punch Drunk Love
Blair Witch Project
Crybaby
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
The Matrix (only the first one - the other two were disappointing)
Kill Bill (Part 2 - I skipped part 1 because it was too violent for me, and I don't think I missed much)
PG-rated
07-13-2005, 11:12 AM
Oh! Just thought of another: Blair Witch Project 2. We rented it to see if it was really as bad as everyone said. It was.
BUT if you watch it with the director's commentary on, it's pretty funny, because it totally explains why the movie was so awful (in a nutshell, he's a sucky director, and doesn't have any clue how to structure a movie).

No, Volcano was Tommy Lee Jones & Anne Heche; you're thinking of Dante's Peak with Pierce Brosnan & Linda Hamilton.
Oh, thanks. I remember that movie as well---It was ok.
It's interesting to see how many movies I enjoyed that others despise.
LOVED Moulin Rouge & Gladiator.
I also quite liked Chicago & Lost in Translation.
The Scary Movies were fun.
But my least favorite movie of all time has to be Your Friends and Neighbors. DH made me watch it when we were first dating, and I always tell him he's really lucky I didn't dump him right then.
This is an awful movie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll add a few more to the list of movies I hated:
BladeRunner The classic sci-fi movie with Harrison Ford----such a slow story. Boring.......
Alien Not scary. I didn't like any of the characters.
Love Actually I love everyone that stars in this movie. I typically adore british films. I found it to be a big fat bummer of a movie.
I loved "Love Actually" and I don't know why.
Movies that I wasted my money and time on:
Lift Your Voice ?? (Hillary Duff flick - DD made me see it)
The Ring (not.scary.at.all)
In Blade Runner's defense... unfortunately, the only version you can find now is the director's cut, not the original release which was actually MUCH better. My husband can detail what is different in them (I know that the voice overs are much better in the original) and we all agree that the director's cut sucks!
I have to agree with hockeybrat. We were on our honeymoon when we saw two movies ~ The Ring and Red Dragon. We saw Red Dragon first and it was icky, but not too scary. It was rated R. I figured how bad could The Ring possibly be since it was only PG-13?? Scared the crap out of me.
Oh, this was also during the same time period of the sniper shootings in VA/MD along 95... which is where we drove to get anywhere on our honeymoon. I was on edge for a few days!!
I hated Closer because it was foul, vulgar for no reason other than to be vulgar, depressing and disappointing. Jude Law, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts can all act like nobody's business ... but nobody had any business actually making this movie! IT was just wretched.
Lost in Translation was awful. I was bored through about half an hour of it, then just gave up and turned the dang thing off. I *never* do that!
I love Groundhog's Day, Gladiator and Moulin Rouge. The highlight of Meet the Fockers was the little baby saying "ass-HOOOOOLE."
Another movie I just saw, expecting to like: Hitch. Wasn't a fan. Eva Mendes is beautiful but a terrible actress, and the plot was just not there. All the best parts were shown during the previews. It's the only Will Smith movie I've seen and not liked!
Well, see...I would argue that the filmmaker wasn't going for a happy moment. And that because he elicited such a strong emotion from you, that he succeeded. I would also argue that he was attempting to show the intense emotions involved in sexual relationships and how those emotions can lead to actions that hurt people so deeply. But, how those people can ultimately redeem themselves in different ways. I think the camera work, scoring, acting, script, and soundtrack was brilliant.
I'm really not invested heavily either way though...just wanted to add a little discussion. I think people like what they like. :) It's all so subjective.
I know it's not the worst movie I've seen, but in terms of being the most DISAPPOINTED in a movie, it has to be Episode II. George Lucas should NEVER write dialogue--it was almost painful to watch.
Note: I am HUGE Star Wars fan and have been since I was a child.
Some of the worst movies I have ever watched:
Howard the Duck
Ishtar
Stargate (the movie is awful. I actually fell asleep. The show is better)
Eyes Wide Shut
The Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielsen
The Whole Ten Yards ( the first movie was ok..this one really was just awful)
Death to Smoochy
Johny Neumonic
AI
Solaris
Red Sonja
Conan the Barbarian
I suppose that's true - it wasn't a poorly made or poorly acted movie ... I just thought the story was offensive drivel! Now, same cast and same director with a different story to work with? That could be good!
Okay, you may not like Team America because (let me guess, it offended you?), but you are voting it as "worst movie EVER made"? Because offensive or not, I was pretty impressed with the amount of work and artistry put into the film. Did you watch the special features part of the DVD? I did, and as an artist, I was very impressed with how the movie was made. But yes, I can understand being offended by the film.
OK, you have a point on the marionette work. What I thought made it one of the worse movies was the story line. I couldn't really get past the storyline to appreciate the actual puppetwork. The version of Great Expectations with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke. I even wrote a review of it in college for the student newspaper. I hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. it is such a freaking horrible movie. I think I could probably write a book on all the things I hate about that movie. And honestly, I usually *try* to like movies. I prefer to like them. I go to them wanting to like them. So this experience was very strange. And my roommate had the same reaction. ;)
OK in 14 pages no one has mentioned The. Absolute. Worst. Movie. Ever?
This is one that fans and non-fans (though there weren't many non-fans of the genre who saw it) alike despised, and it was made all the worse by the 20+ year wait and building anticipation.
Do you know?
That's right, Dungeons and Dragons.
I saw hard-core gamers (like my then-boyfriend/now-DH's friends) *crying* during and after the movie. There was silence as we exited the theater (not just us, but everyone), then as we all made our way to the parking structure (theater in a place where there's little street parking) you could hear people start to deconstruct it, to try unsuccessfully to find *anything* redeeming about the movie.
Poorly made, poorly cast (poor Jeremy Irons must have had some huge college bills or balloon payment coming up to allow himself to be in it), bad makeup, bad...just everything. And, as I mentioned, the fact that gamers had been waiting decades to have *someone* bring it to life just made it so much worse, that this story, this screenplay, and this director was the one to do it...I'm NOT a gamer (but have always been surrounded by them) so it didn't directly affect me (except for the movie running time and hours since then discussing it I'll never get back), but it was really so sad to see would-be mega-fans soooooo disappointed in such an awful movie.
Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by acclaimed author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the “true” story of what really did become of Elvis.
We find the King (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his “death”, then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds…
I am "Sho' nuff" sad to see this movie on the list :p. It's one of my favs, cause it totally rocks!
I LOOOOVE the Last Dragon!! 'Who's the master? Sho' nuff!' Sadly, I can quote nearly all parts of this movie - I know ALL the dialogue.
I was seriously in love with Taimak.
I *love* Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon!
Along with all the wonderful dialog "Catches bullets in his teeth? XX, Please." and the exceptional cheese factor, there are games to be played! You can play: high/straight/jonesing, count the continuity errors, and who forgot their lines. It is the ultimate bad movie. I have it on DVD.
Oh, there are so many movies that would qualify for this award, I don't know where to start!
Some that were mentioned:
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Groundhog Day
America's Sweethearts
Howard the Duck
Daredevil
others:
Kate and Leopold
Cape Fear
Men in Black (one and two)
The Sweetest Thing
Feeling Minnesota
Carrington
Murder by Numbers
Jack the Bear
It's Pat
My hubby and guy friends have a knack for picking the worst movies EVER. And, from looking at my list, a few of my college roomates.
You can check out IMDB's worst movies ever--top 100 (http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom).
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but hands down the worst movie is The Fifth Element (http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/thefifthelement/title-navigation-2.html) with Bruce Willis. From a screeching lead female to every stereotypical character in the book, this movie STUNK.
Worst movie ever.... Lost In Translation
Not sure if it's been mentioned, by my vote for Worst Move Ever goes to <drumroll>... Eyes Wide Shut, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and director Stanley Kubrick's last film. I would've died, too, rather than see my name associated with that piece of drivel.
It was touted as daring and scandalous...maybe it would've been, if had been released in 1969, rather than 1999.
oooh I second the vote forEyes wide shut.. what an awful, awful movie. Vanilla Sky is just as awful and weird. what do those 2 movies have in common? Tom Cruise! hmm...
Worst.Movie.Ever?
Alone in the Dark (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369226/)
No question. I think it was #2 on Rotten Tomatoes bottom 100 list. It's REALLY REALLY bad. I can't even begin to describe how bad. I love bad horror movies, but this was unwatchable. Ed Wood just lost his place as the worst director of all time. No, seriously.
It stars Tara Reid as an archaeologist. Complete with "nerdy" glasses and a lab coat. In one scene, the characters are wandering around, calling out their lost comrade's name. His name is Marco. Yeah, imagine the reaction in the theater. :rolleyes:
My vote goes to "The Royal Tennenbaums". Rented it, hated it, didn't finish it. We had high expectations for it since it had so many big name stars.
I also vote for "Lost in Translation" such a strange flick.
Hated Vanilla Sky! What an awful awful movie.
Another "worst movie" would have to be The Pledge with Jack Nicholson. Just terrible.
Ok...I have to say this.
Little Miss Sunshine has to be the worst movie ever! My and my boo, just finished watching this last night, and we were scratching our heads about what the big hype about this movie was. It was just bizarre.:confused:
I agree that it wasn't the greatest, but knowing that it was based on a true story and seeing what happened at the end, i couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. They were extremly bad actors though.
Yes, but "based on a true story" is a little ridiculous when the only facts we know for sure is that two divers got stranded and then one of their snorkels turned up in a shark's belly. So, that's the first ten minutes of the movie and the last five. Everything else is conjecture... and bad acting. Bad, bad acting.
New World
I've pretty much given up on an Terrence Malick films post-Dirty Harry. They are visually stunning but the philosophically-saturated plots to his films are worse than medieval torture.
The Thin Red Line is awful, so I could imagine that New World is just as bad.
Am I the ONLY person who couldn't get into The Lord of the Rings?
I am just NOT a fan of fantasy, sci-fi, etc.
A few people awhile back thought they were the only ones who didn't care for Forest Gump. My sister (who was a theater major in college) did not like that! So, you are not alone!
I have to agree about Royal Tenenbaums.
The only other movie we couldn't stand finishing was The Aviator.
I think that those who did not like Little Miss Sunshine and New World probably would not like most festival films. LMS won a lot of festival awards. NW was the runner up for Best Film at Venice last year. Most festival films are sort of the same genre - really serious, make you think about it for days, etc.
No, I like plenty of fesitival films. I just don't like Terrence Malick films - I don't care for his style.
Chris Rock is lucky to be walking around after that. I remember the critics asking if there was any script at all involved because everyone seemed to be making up their own dialogue. I believe it was Ebert who said something like, "Is this movie finished?" hahahaha! The worst. Dreadful.
