Alright, gettin' a little personal and south of the border, but how do you "maintain" your bikini area?
I have always been a shaver. But honestly, it's getting ridiculous. It doesn't work that well, there's still stubble that's very uncomfortable-even if you manage to get it all- it grows back in like two days, but you can't shave it that often because you get the stupid itchy red bumps and you have to wait for them to go away. And then if you grow it out a bit you get the BIG stupid itchy red bumps. and the shaving process itself sucks. There's just nothing good about shaving.
So....
I'm looking for another route.
ie-waxing.
Now I've never waxed anything (including my eyebrows) and I'm not sure about it.
Does it work better than shaving?
How long does it last (cleanly)?
Do you really have to let it grow out to a certain length before you can do it again? If so, then what's the point, because then for two weeks you'll have hair and stubble...do you have to plan around it? (bathing suit wise etc).
and, of course, how much DOES it hurt?
any tips/tricks/things you've come up with?
any other methods that you can recomment/advise against?
you might want to have this thread over to Fashion & Beauty - any mod can do that for you.
To answer your question, I shave for hte day-to-day stuff and wax for important events/vacation. I just picked up some Magic Powder to try (and I even started a thread on it over in Fashion/Beauty).

Would love to hear more about bikini waxing as it's something I've been considering lately. The full Brazilian, actually. I usually Nair or shave but even after I Nair you can still see stubble underneath (as a brunette).
I've only heard it mentioned here (well, I guess there too) on the boards. I haven't tried it just yet. It's on the agenda for tomorrow. I'm a little scared, to be honest, I've some pretty "tough" (read: stubborn) hair and I've been burned using depliatories before.

OMG...I have the waxing horror story from hell. Course I tried to do it at home because I wanted to "fully wax" and it was my first time...trying to gauge the pain, a little modest, etc. I've always been a shaver, everyday...never had any problems with smoothness or irritation, just lucky I guess. Well in getting pregnant, I figured one day I wouldn't be able to see my hoo-ha so I thought I might try waxing to see if that could be an option. I personally have gone so long without anything there(bare), that I cannot imagine keeping any sort of growth for any amount of time.
This did not go well at all. I posted this in a journal I had a while back, whether or not it's informative I don't know...maybe I'm just a big wussy. At any rate, I'm sure anyone who reads it will get a good laugh. Enjoy:
Okay, as a woman...we are taught to groom ourselves in a particular way to stay..."neat." There are various forms of this "neat" from trimmed to completely bare. I have been shaving for so long, to the extreme where any amount of growth is icky to me...at one point I shaved every single day. Sooner or later(with being pregnant) I will get to the point where I can't SEE my nether regions much less take care of what's there. A few weeks ago I talked to DH about this and thought, maybe I could let him shave me. Well as careful as I KNOW he would be, I can't help thinking how bad I'd want to hurt him if he gashed me with a Mach3 razor blade. Follow me ladies? So then I thought, well maybe I could go get waxed. First of all this is TOTALLY unappealing becuase frankly, I don't want anyone down there that I'm not on a first, MIDDLE and last name basis with. I don't consider myself modest in the sense of nudity, but there's just something about THAT that feels very private to me. PLUS there's the pain factor. So here I go to Walmart one day...I'm in the makeup section when I stumble across the at home waxing kits. I should have followed my gut instinct that told me to flee the aisle, but curiosity killed the cat so there I sat reading all the different packages and what they entailed. I settled on my purchase and went on my merry way. The wax kit sat under my bathroom sink for about a week(well I would need some growth in order to try this stuff out). This past weekend while DH was at work I thought what the hey, no time like the present. So in my wax kit there are these little strips. You warm them between your hands, peel the clear cellophane off, apply it in the direction of growth, hold the skin taut, and RIP in one FASSSSSSST movement. This strip was about an inch wide...the bare strip I Left behind was about 1/2 inch wide. Why? NO CLUE. Did it hurt? OH MAMA. So then, after catching my breath, I applied two more strips. In ripping these off, not only did I rip out part of my soul I think...but I didn't leave 2 more bare strips on my body, but instead more like thinner areas of hair. But here I am thinking, I've endured this much pain, I don't want to sit here feeling like I've done it all for nothing, you know? So I apply yet another wax strip. I waited for the wax to cool to "grab" the hair, pulled the skin taut, and ripped once again. As I stared at this wax strip (which seemed to have less hair on it than the last one) and my body(which seemed to have the SAME amount of hair on it as 10 painful seconds before) my eyes started to water. Was I crying in disbelief that this wasn't working for me? Or were these tears of sheer PAIN that I had SELF-INFLICTED?
So I ran a nice bubble bath and decided to shave again and never consider waxing my private bits for the rest of my life. As the water ran I sat there thinking, would it hurt less to have someone else do it? Like you know when you get your brows waxed and they have to tweeze...somehow it hurts less, maybe because you aren't thinking about waxing/tweezing but the silly small-talk you are making with your salon professional. Or maybe because simply you aren't expecting it. I climbed into the bath and started reading a book surrounded by scented candles and bubbles galore. After I was well relaxed and I thought my poor skin had the time it needed to NOT be irritated by my razor, I decided to shave. I swear the hair had never been shaved so smoothly or easily...PERHAPS it was JUMPING OUT FOLLICLE FIRST, in TOTAL FEAR OF WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO TO IT NEXT!! If those poor hairs had voices, I'm sure I would've heard SCREAMS as the razor blades chopped them down, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NO MORE PLEEEEEAAASSSSEEEE!!!!!"
So long story short...If you've never waxed your private bits before...PLEASE don't try this at home. PLEASE learn from MY LESSON and either (A)stay away from waxing altogether, or (B)Get someone who knows what they are doing!

It IS a woman thing, I know exactly what you mean. My DH can't understand that I have posted all sorts of information about our IVF journey and now early pregnancy.
KIMand GINO I've never tried waxing and now, thanks to you, I don't think I ever will. I also wanted to be "clean" during my pregnancy and during labor. You can only imagine the ways I had to stretch and bend to get it done without waxing!! My DH still can't believe that I was worried about THAT when I first went into labor.

I am SO with you here...I don't like feeling not-so-neat in front of my DR! And I've done the bending/stretching, it's no use - I can't see a thing...DH laughs at me because at this point, it's more or less braille shaving! :o
LOL..braille shaving. I completely relate to this. I could barely reach to wipe ( I know..TMI) but I was HELL BENT on getting it done ...even through DHs taunts

There is a Magic Powder thread started by Katy. Search for it and you will find it. It is a powder substance that you make into a paste and use like Nair.
I have had a bikini/underam waxing and it isn't bad. She did tell me legs hurt the worst. I have tried that myself and it hurt like a mofo.

I have had my bikini line waxed and I didn't think it was bad at all. I have also tried waxing it myself, with mixed results. Sometimes I couldn't hold my skin tight enough, so I would end up bruising myself and other times it would be perfect and I wouldn't have any problems. I had my legs waxed for the first time on Saturday and I will never do it again. You couldn't pay me enough money to go through that pain again! Seriously I was super close to telling the girl to stop.
I've waxed my brows, upper lip, underarms, bikini (full brazillian and just the line) and the legs. I will NEVER, EVER do my legs again. That was sheer and utter HELL! The underarms hurt too, but I'd do that again to have smooth pits. Bikini, not so bad, although I did NOT enjoy the full brazillian experience. My lip and brows don't bother me at all.
And now, I'm off to try out my Magic Powder!

OMG. OK so maybe I shouldn't have the legs waxed... I just didn't want to hassle of bringing the razor and shavegel on vacation with me.
Maybe they hurt bc there's just more skin overall? Does it hurt more than a facial? BC I had a facial about a month ago and I am NEVER doing that again.

i began waxing in 2001 when i got engaged and have not gone back to shaving no do i want to. i wax underarms, full leg, brazilian (bare), eyebrows, lip and chin. for the legs the part that is sensitive is over the shin bone but thighs and anything else on the legs does not hurt especially if the esthetician is good. what makes it hurt more is when you are tense so the estethician should try to relax you. i love mine and i do not hurt and just remember to breathe in and out and the estethician should really clue you in to when to do this. i love having it bare down there because it is just so clean especially during the visitor time.

I used to get a Brazillian and my legs waxed on a regular basis, but I didn't like letting the hair grow in between, especially during the summer. Also, I still got major red bumps from the Brazillian, no matter how much I exfoliated. When Schick came out with the Intuition razor I decided to give shaving a try again, and I was very impressed. Close, smooth shave & no bumps!
Just used the Magic Powder and wow! I gotta say I love it. I was a bit sloppy with it, so I didn't get everything, but then again, I didn't trim first either (bad idea). Otherwise, I quite like it and SO much easier than shaving.
*note* remember to trim before you remove - otherwise, big, BIG mess - not pretty!

I used to use Dove and water to shave and although I had to shave all the time to keep stubble to a minimum, it worked. A friend suggested shaving on dry skin, no water no soap, and I've been doing it that way ever since. I know it sounds gross but I swear it works. And I shave it allll off. I was thinking of trying that Magic Powder but it sounds kinda messy. I've been considering a brazilian laser hair removal but I need to learn more about it.

Brazilian gal going on 3 years and I can't see myself turning back! It really depends on how good your esthetician is, mine rocks. You get used to the pain over time, for me it's more of a dull pain now and it's nothing a little ibuprofen can't take care of.

RE: Ibuprofen
I've heard it goes over MUCH better if you take ibuprofen/tylenol/other pain reliever first. I hope I didn't come across as trying to deter anyone from waxing, but by all means, PLEASE get professional help!! ;) Maybe I'll try it again sometime, but *I* won't be doing it!

I started waxing bikini area in 2002 before my wedding. I love it! I'm usually a big baby about things hurting, but I swear waxing really doesn't hurt. IT is like a little ouch.
Anyway, I usually don't wax in the winter, unless I'm vacationing or something. Then in the early spring I get a Brazilian, and the rest of the summer & fall I very either more than just bikini (farther in on sides and top than bikini wax) or Brazilian. I love it. It grows back with no red bumps and no irritation. I can go 3 weeks between waxing, but I'm not a hairy girl (hope that wasn't TMI).

Have you considered laser hair removal? It has been great for me. I have only had two treatments so far, but the difference is amazing. My bikini line is almost hairless. I probably need one or two more treatments because I have a lot of dark hair.
Not having to worry about shaving or waxing is a great feeling.
Ilovemygeek - how is the lazer hair removal? approx how much does it cost. how long will it last once you go through all the treatments.
i normally wax or nair my bikini line. i prefer waxing bc there is no stubble and it lasts longer. i resort to nair most of the time bc its cheaper.
only once and never again will i do a brazilian wax. mind you, i went to a great place to get this done. highly recommended by many people. first off, it hurt like hell.  afterwards my skin looked like a red balloon. then the next day it looked like i had some hideous skin disease bc i ended up getting all these pimply white heads all over my skin. my god - pimples down there!!!!!!!!    these did not go away for almost a week. i wouldn't even let my dh see me. i was horrified by the ugliness. though, i must admit i liked the feeling of having very little hair down there once my reaction died away, so i am thinking i might have to go the route of lazer hair removal. shaving is not an option bc i get very itchy and break out in red bumps from that.

rebjc Laser hair removal is the best! I have convinced several of my friends to go for the treatments as well. I am not having a Brazilian done, just my bikini line plus a little more. The cost at the office I go to is $150 a treatment, but they also do packages of 4 treatments at a lower cost. I am going to the office of a plastic surgeon that I work with, so he is only charging me $50 a treatment! That's a nice little deal!
There is little pain involved. I think I have an average pain tolerance and it just felt like a little pinch every time they zapped an area. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes.
Best of all, it is permanent! :D
thanks, Ilovemygeek!! that sounds like it is worth it if it is permanant. i have spent so much money on waxing that if i didn't have to go for waxing again, i would be saving that money. plus, the idea of not having to worry about that again is great.

Be careful about laser hair removal though, make sure you are evaluated to see if you are a candidate. i was considering it myself at one point but my esthetician (who also works in a derm office) said that I would be a good candidate because my skin is tough enough to take it, however, with my medium/olive complexion it is likely I would end up with permanent dark spots. I think it's best suited for caucasian skin but women of color should probably avoid it because of the scarring risk. She told me about this one Indian woman who did it on her legs and ended with dark circle scars all over her skin, not fun :(
tlew12778
07-09-2005, 12:11 PM
My esthetician told me laser is not always permanent. I was considering having it done my underarms bc I literally have like 5 hairs on one side only and they just bug me. But she just waxes them for me when I have my eyebrows and lip done now.
I have a question... I am going to try out the leg and bikini line despite the warnings. I was at my estheticist's the other day and she thinks it will not be bad considering my skin and hair type. Anyway I just want to know how much they take off the bikini line. Should I be "trimmed" before I go? God, this is embarassing... oh well. Thanks!

And it says it's for the relief of razor burn in black men, so I'm assuming this is the wrong stuff. :p

So this Magic Powder. . . . you mix it with water, it becomes a paste. . . and then you apply it and rip it off? so you put a strip of wax paper on it to rip it off? or does it harden?
And of course, the MOST important question: Does it hurt less than waxing??
Thanks
I made a paste, laid down on a towel on the bed, waited ten minutes, hopped in the shower and rubbed with a washcloth. It all came *right* off, easy peasy with no harsh rubbing, or pulling, or yanking, nothing. Again, I just suggest you do a little "trim" before you do it and be sure to cover the drain with something to catch the hair so you don't clog.

My experience with magic powder:
I thought I was leaving it on too long, because it was burning my skin!
But then, I had to rub really hard to get the hair off, so I'm not sure I left it on long enough. Plus, it hurt like hell where I rubbed. An area about 2 inches across was perfectly smooth, but everywhere else was sorta splotchy. I think my skin is too sensitive for such things, or else I need to increase my pain tolerance. I threw it in the garbage after one try.
tlew : I think you need to be trimmed, I want to say either 1/4 or 1/2 inch. I've heard if you don't trim, they'll do it for you, because if it's too long the wax doesn't stick.
JamBray
07-12-2005, 09:02 AM
Okay, so it can be used for hair removal then? I assume if you don't make a paste out of it, and just sprinkle it on then it will only help prevent the red bumps I get from shaving? Are there directions on it for making the paste, or is this just something you girls found out? Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm really curious about this stuff...anything better than shaving I want to try. :D

Years ago I went all out and had electrolysis done on my bikini, underarms and eyebrows. Painful yes, but I used to get the worst ingrown hairs and razor rash in my underarms that it was worth it. Of course, I've also spent enough money doing it to put the electrologist's children through college, but that's another story. Now, it's all as smooth as a baby's butt! Seriously. And I never have to shave.
Stephanie
07-12-2005, 09:23 PM
JamBray~Don't sprinkle! :D Just the thought of someone doing that conjures awful images! Ouch! :) It is basically Nair that you have to mix yourself. The front of the can says that it is a depilatory meant for black men to help stop razor bumps. Here are the actual directions straight from my can:
1. Mix 2 heaping teaspoons of shaving powder with an equal amount of cool water.
2. Apply the creamy mixture to beard. Leave on for 5-7 minutes. Remoisten if mixture dries.
3. Remove with spatula.
4. Rinse shaving area thoroughly.
I don't do the whole spatula thing. Washcloth works for me. Of course, there are warnings on the can about using it only on facial areas. Some brilliant person made many lives easier by slapping it on down below. ;)

I thought that getting a brazillian wax hurt a lot worse than getting my legs waxed. I got them both done on the same day so I think I can really compare those two. The brazillian will not hurt as bad the 2nd time, as long as you don't wait too long inbetween waxing. I wouldn't wax the bikini area at home though, sounds very painful!

those of you who get bikini waxes: do you do anything to prepare your skin beforehand?
greenbunny

If doing legs hurts the worst, I could probably handle getting bikini done. I've done my legs myself many times, and after one bad product I found a groove and had no problems. I ended up stopping because I could never get all the hair on the same "growing schedule" and I'd always have patches of stubble here or there, never fully smooth legs.
I think I'll try the magic powder. Nair has never worked for me, so I'm skeptical about products used in a similar fashion.

I really like bikini zone gel. It seems to lessen the number of ingrown hairs that I get from a bikini wax. You can buy at it at any CVS type store. There is also a cream by the same name but I've found that the gel works much better.
babylove: congrats on your first brazilian! I haven't been that brave yet since I find regular bikini waxes painful enough. I usually exfoliate with any body scrub I have lying around although I've found that using the gel I mentioned above helps to also keep ingrown hairs away.

I am going on a cruise in February and I am bound and determined to have a full Brazilian before going! So how long should the hair be and is there anything I would have to do to prepare the area? I think it doesn't matter but I always trim. I found it hurts more if I don't bc I think that if the hairs are short (anywhere on the body I mean) then the wax sticks to the entire hair. If the hair is long, the wax might only stick to the end and it hurts a lot more when they rip off the strip.
But, I really wouldn't worry about what you look like to them. I think they are like gyns and have seen it all.
FWIW, my first gyn (a woman) commented on the "landscape" during my first ultrasound, and told me how she couldn't understand how some "young, pretty girls would come and not even trim a bit".

That's a completely inappropriate comment for a physician to make, and she could legitimately be sued for sexual harassment.

Fair point - and I realize I wasn't clear. I certainly wasn't advocating for her to sue. I recently read another biography about practicing medicine, and the physician raised some interesting points about how whenever he has to even check a patient's heartbeat (i.e., have them raise their shirt and he listens to their back) if it is a female patient, he has a female nurse in the room at all times.
I was just thinking if the situation were flipped, and a male gynecologist had made a comment like that, most folks would react very strongly. No health care practitioner should say anything like that - regardless of gender.
No lawsuits required ;)

Geez. I'm glad I live in America, then. Do they comment on your fat ass when you are getting an internal, too? "Such a young, pretty girl, need to lose some junk in the trunk, here's your Rx for the pill!"

Honsetly based strictly off of watching Dr 90201 ;) I think some South American countries are very very different from us when it comes to commenting on appearances. It actually doesn't surprise me a bit to hear Sol's experience.
It makes me glad I go to a crunchy American midwife so she can take my being 'curvatious' and 'natural' as me being a hippy :p :D

Dude, my last two OB/GYNs have been daddish, middle-aged men, about as crunchy as a Twinkie. And if either one of them said anything about my bush, I'd be outraged, to say the least. It's not like we're looking at the naked Vanessa Hudgens photos*!
*ETA: Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind looking like her. Or being 18 again ;)

I'm leaving for a vacation tomorrow night and am considering waxing for the first time. My question is this, there is a Tricoci University (http://www.tricociuniversity.com/) in my area and I was planning on going there for a pedicure before I leave. Dare I trust a student to wax my legs or bikini line? How many people have allergic reactions? Is that a recipe for disaster?

BTW, I'll shut up after this--but seriously, I am all for waxing and trimming and whatnot down there. I just think it's pretty sad that girls (in any country) are made to feel they have to pretty-up down there for their *doctors*.
It's like, OK, you have a yeast infection, or a nasty rash--but hey! At least your pubic hair is in order!

I don't think it's a matter of thinking you have to clean up down there so much an issue of the doctor commenting on your body in general. My point originally was that all doctors have seen it all, regardless if they comment or not. That's not to say that commenting is OK, but it's also normal in a lot of places and the fact that anyone thinks twice about it could be due to cultural upbringing. Also, I seriously doubt that a doctor would have said that in an accusatory way. It was probably more like "she's well groomed so I feel like I can make this sort of comment" situation.
Anyway, for Bbbethie, I would never let a student wax me. The pain of waxing has a lot to do with the experience of a waxer.

Well, like I said--glad I don't live in those places, because it would piss me off. Even if I were well-groomed and the doctor was commenting favorably on my pleasant nether regions.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the input!
I am SO not into the ful Brazillian. Just creepy IMHO. I get landing strip, but slightly thicker than average. And kept trimmed. I've been doing it for years, but always kept up during pregnancy, because I wanted to be *clean* for delivery. Made the whole after-process so much better/easier/cleaner (TMI...but there's mess down there after babies....for weeks sometimes!)

If any health care practitioner commented on my undercarriage during an exam, I'd read them the riot act. End of story. And FTR I'm a fan of being neat and tidy (I did laser to get away from the waxing).
Sweet jeebus,no on the student waxer. I'm getting woozy just thinking about it.

Hey, how did you like it? How many treatments did it take? And maybe TMI, but do they just laser the sides or do they do it down under too?

Bumping this up for input. I am thinking of laser hair removal. Armpits, legs and nether region.
Basically, I have always shaved everywhere. But I am doing so much running and walking lately that it's always sweaty, red and irritated. I hate to start the waxing route and do that forever. But I would also love to be hair free.
Since laser hair removal is becoming so much more prevalent, I thought I would ask for input/experiences. I don't want a Brazilian, just a landing strip. Wil places liek Sedona med spa do all that or do they just do bikini area clean up?

I did my armpits and nether regions a couple years ago and I LOVE it. I did not do my legs because honestly, shaving them has never bothered me. It's nice to put on a swinsuit and not have the red bump area or spots I missed. I never did the waxing thng, it always just sounded too painful to me and not long term for the pain :-) I have a pretty high tolerance for pain but I did not think the laser was too bad, sort of like a rubber band snap for just a second.
I can't speak to Sedona Med Spa but I went to Ideal Image and was very happy with them.
