I hope you all don't think I'm ultra-nosey with these share and tell threads. :o I just think it's a great way to get to know each other!

What magazines do you subscribe to? Why do you like it (or not)?

We subscribe to:

1. Vegetarian Times (http://www.vegetariantimes.com/) - this is a hold over from when I was a vegetarian. I stopped about 2 years ago, but still eat some soy (soyrizo for example) and LOVE reading the magazine. It's great for South Beach Dieters, too, for the LOADS of high-protein, fresh veggies and fruit recipes.

2. Backpacker (http://www.backpacker.com/) - It's always a happy, happy day when we get this! DH and I fight to be the first to read it. It's chock full o' hiking info! There are great product reviews, destination articles, trail data ready to load into the GPS, recipes, etc. I love it.

3. Men's Health (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/homepage.do) - this is officially DH's, but I LOVE reading it! It's so dang entertaining.

My bride mags have finally stopped coming. No more wedding planning-envy for me!

Town and Country- I've gotten this for so many years-- I love their articles and beautiful pictures.

Town and Country Travel- For the same reasons as above. :)

InStyle- The holy grail of all magazines.

Gourmet- Because I THINK I can cook (but I'm sadly mistaken)!

I know-- I look through the mag and show DH how I'm going to make all of these wonderful, gourmet meals.

And, we end up at McDonalds!

Newsweek -- This is my weekly news magazine. I like a few of the columnists, and the general stories make sure I'm up on current events.
Atlantic Monthly -- more in depth writing on current events. It's always interesting, but requires that I set aside time for reading it.
Real Simple -- This is a favorite. It has personal growth stories, organizational systems, tasty and easy recipes, and droolworthy stuff that I'd love to buy.
In Style -- it's a fun magazine. My husband calls it 'the phone book' because it's so big, but I'm okay with that
O -- a new-ish addition, but this is a great magazine. It has smart articles, good book reccomendations and more droolworthy merchandise
MS Living -- gotta indulge my inner Martha!
Fine Cooking -- I love this cooking magazine. The recipes are pretty easy, but the flavors are interesting, and I love that they're very good at explaining on how to take an idea and expand it. Instead of a recipe for a specific tart, they'll give you the basics on crust, fruit, sweetener, etc. and then give half a dozen flavor variations.
Cooks Illustrated -- This is another cooking favorite. They test many different methods/ingredients in order to come up with a fairly foolproof recipe. It has recipes, but also essays on why things should be cooked the way they are. I wish they'd expand their cuisine, but love what they do.
Everyday Food -- nice, easy recipes. Several have become household favorites.
Bon Appetit -- fun to read, and it has recipes with great flavors.
Cooking Light -- an old standby for mostly light recipes. I wish they'd focus more on food than on lifestyle issues, but otherwise it's good. I'm back after a break of several years -- I wasn't seeing fresh ideas, but I am now.
Smart Money -- my favorite of the 'what to do with your money' magazines. It addresses a wide range of options
Shape -- It's a women's fitness/healthy lifestyle magazine. I get several good ideas a year from it, and it's always inspiring to read.
Us Weekly -- gotta get my trashy celebrity gossip somewhere...

Hi, my name is ee_chick, and I have a problem :D I like them all! I commute 2+ hours a day, so magazines are a perfect way to entertain myself.

My magazine subscriptions are:

Glamour - I've been a subscriber ever since college. Good fluff reading.
Real Simple - I just discover this magazine this year when a friend of mine gave me a subscription. I love this magazine because it has a little bit of everything. I've tried a few of the quick dinner ideas and they've been very good.
Budget Travel - Actually I gave this to my DH as part of his bday gift last year, but it's really a gift for the both of us. ;) Although we don't get to travel as much as we like to, it's fun to read about all the places we *could* visit one day (after we win the lottery). :D

The New Yorker...

The New York Review of Books...

Archeology...

National Geographic...

Parents AND Parenting (Why? I don't know...I do have a kid but...they are ridiculous magazines)

London Times Literary Supplement

Granta

Oh my God! I subscribe to so many magazines! I never really thought about that. And I'm right about to subscribe to the Economist. (This is because I can't read the newspaper anymore since I had a baby. Whenever I hear about anything bad happening to children I get very upset. The Economist doesn't usually have things like that.)

I'm sure there is more. I love magazines--I read Marie Claire, People, Us, Vogue, etc., etc. but I read the free ones at the gym. Sometimes I even had a hard time leaving the gym because I can't tear myself away from the magazines.

2. Backpacker (http://www.backpacker.com/) - It's always a happy, happy day when we get this! DH and I fight to be the first to read it. It's chock full o' hiking info! There are great product reviews, destination articles, trail data ready to load into the GPS, recipes, etc. I love it.

i get (all gifts from various people)-
Glamour ~ my mom has given this to me since college, and i really like it. i've learned lots of things about various subjects especially female health information, and now, i think they are adding new 'humanitarian' articles which are good.
Marie Claire ~ i asked for this from DH for xmas. i love it!! it is great for activist articles and keeps me in the know about various women's issues all over the world.
MS Everyday Food ~ good recipes! i used to steal my mom's till she gave me this for xmas.
Southern Living ~ my MIL gives this to all families. i get good ideas sometimes and some recipes. i'll enjoy it more when i have a house!

DH gets -
Sports Illustrated ~ i think he likes it. he doesn't have time to read them all the way thru since you get them once a week. right now he is way into reading Materials Science & Engr magazines that he gets at school, b/c he feels behind in current developments (he's a dork :) & i love it)!

Ladies Home Journal is the only one I subscribe to. It was a very grown up decision to switch from Cosmo to LHJ, but I just felt that Cosmo didn't cater to my "single parenthood" lifestyle much. Anyway, I buy People and US when they look 'interesting'.

Now, if we were discussing catalogs, I'd be on my 2nd page by now :)

Um, the only magazines I get are journals through the National Council for the Social Studies. Those are Social Education, Middle Level Learning, and Theory & Research in Social Education.

I should subscribe to something "real" so I don't feel like such a nerd. :p

I've become a magazine junkie when I discovered www.discountmagazines.com (thanks to a WC thread). I commute an hour each way, so I have plenty of time to read through them.

Here's what we get:
Atlantic Monthly - I like the ironic approach to politics and other topics
Real Simple - I like that it's geared toward working women, who don't have much free time
Conde Nest Traveler - great articles and travel advice
Motor Trend - this is for DH
Time Out New York - has the latest info for all the cultural activities (from opera to comedy clubs)

shopaholic

Allure - can't wait for this one to end. I never read it and end up throwing it out.

2) Us Weekly - my gossip bible
3) Newsweek
4) Vanity Fair - probably my favorite. It has the best articles.
5) Real Simple
6) Atlantic Monthly
7) Star Magazine
8) TV Guide
9) Wine SPectator
10) Smithsonian
11) Money
12) Glamour

Real Simple - I love this magazine - they have such good cleaning tips, organization ideas, and great recipes (not that I ever prepare any of them)

Scrapbooking, ETC. - comes 6 times a year - I love to scrapbook however I don't do it as often as I would like to.

Parenting - got 3 free months from Motherhood when I purchased my first round of maternity wear and got hooked

Shape - which I loved before I got knocked up - I haven't looked at the last few issues because seeing all those flat stomachs just depresses me.

Things I should subscribe to because I buy them just about every week/month - Star (I know, awful..I enjoy doing the crossword puzzle), InTouch, InStyle, People, Redbook, Good HouseKeeping, FitPregnancy (that I read while eating Ben and Jerry's), Glamour, O, US, Newsweek, and sometimes our local mags (Baltimore, Washington DC) if I see an article that catches my eye.

I am a total magazine wh*re - it drives DH mad because the magazines will pile up and I HATE to throw them out.

I subscribe to "Everyday Food" and DH and I both love it! I can usually find most items at the grocery store and the recipes are relitively simple.

I also subscribe to "Woman's Day" and "Redbook". These were purchased as fund-raisers for cousins. I didn't start off subscribing to "Redbook", but to "Lifetime Magazine". When it went under, they replaced my remaining issues with "Redbook".

I sub and I have read all sorts of magazines, trying to find the right one or ones for me. My favorite so far is "Cosmo--UK Edition"! And I can't even subscribe to it because it's from "across the pond"! :(

I so could have written this myself! I just went through a ton of them yesterday to try to make the house look presentable.

I subscribe to a ton of magazines, but most were free or dirt cheap:

Bead Style
Bead and Button
Lapidary Journal
Sunshine Artist
Real Simple
Budget Living
Vitals Woman
Lucky
Shop etc
Vegetarian Times
Saveur
PROMO
Inc.
either GH or LHJ -- can't remember which
Organic Style
Body & Soul

And for DH, we get:
Bicycling
Outside
Men's Journal
Vitals

There are probably more, but some of them I don't even read anymore before passing them on to someone else.

I get:
Bon Appetit -- love it, make the recipes all the time
InStyle -- got to have one fashion/celebrity mag, and I find InStyle to be more accessible than Vogue and less trashy than something like Cosmo
Traditional Home -- my mom sends me a free gift subscription that she gets when she subscribes herself
Southern Living -- ditto
Real Simple -- gift from a friend, though I really like
Conde Nast Traveler -- it's fun to dream, and we use the lists (gold list, hot list, best spas, etc.) all the time in planning trips
several legal publications through work
Bust -- because I need a little feminist ranting to balance out the InStyle and home magazines

RealSimple--I love this magazine. I'm totally inspired by the organizational stuff and their recipes always look so good, yet I've never made anything.

Over the years I've subscribed to Us, InStyle (liked the stories, but couldn't deal with all of the ads--I'm not a big clothes shopper), Bon Appetit (recipes were too "much").

DH gets Wine Spectator and Playboy.

In Style -- great fashion, love the ideas
Self -- inspiration, good for my self-image
Glamour -- like the makeover the magazine has had recently

Reader's Digest

Ones that we ordered and paid for:

a couple chemical engineering ones that dh gets
a fantasy football one that dh now gets.

Ones that I can't remember how we received, I don't think we paid for them, some bonus or free thing that came out of buying baby junk:

Here's what we get:

Wired:This is a magazine for DH. It's about electronics and technology. I have foudn many of the articles to be quite good.

Child: I got this after DS was born. I don't really like it as there isn't much there. I think it focuses too much on fashion and not enough on kids and parenting. This one is going to lapse.

This Old House: I love this magazine. It has design tips and nuggets on information on tools and projects that have been invaluable while living in our 90 year-old house.

We went through this thing about two years ago where we trimmed down the number of magazines we got. I'd like to get a few more as I sometimes need a distraction from my life. I'd like toget the following:

People, Sports Illustrated, Allure, Time, Newsweek, and Parents.

DiscoDiva

Weight Watchers - but I'm not going to renew. Once you've been on WW for a while and are on Lifetime, you just don't 'need' the magazine as much.
Memory Makers - a scrapbook magazine, and I love it.

DH - none.

I was about to come in and post the 15+ magazines that we get, but I scrolled up, and see that I already posted a year ago. (!!)

Actually, since then, I've started subscribing to People, Women's Health, New York magazine, and New Jersey Monthly. I also entered into a barter agreement with a coworker where I give her my gossip magazines in return for the New Yorker and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin. I think it's a great trade. :)

There are really only 3 mags I make it a point to read every month:

My favorite magazine is Vanity Fair. It has a great mix of politics, current affairs, materialism, gossip and culture.

My next favorite is Atlantic Monthly. It can be intellectually pretentious (those letters to the editor!) but I learn a lot from every issue and I feel like reading it is WELL worth my time.

I also read Vogue every month but I don't have a subscription. I should get one. I personally can't stand any other style magazine.

Oh yeah, I guess I also have a subscription to Mothering (http://www.mothering.com/), but it takes like 20 minutes to read cover to cover so I don't count it. I also used to have a subscription to Brain, Child (http://www.brainchildmag.com/) that I guess should renew.

It is a chore to try to keep up with all these magazines and not have them lying around the house. They become clutter really quickly. If I had to narrow it down to two that I couldn't live without, it would be Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly. With InStyle as a close third.

Does anyone subscribe to Better Homes and Gardens? How do you like it? Is it old-fashioned or for more mature tastes?

If anyone's interested, I get most of my mag subscriptions from Land of Mags (www.landofmags.com) and right now they are having a "2 years for 1 sale" on most if not all of their magazines. And I also have a promo code for $3 off every subscription. It's ALLM3. **Note that it's only good through 9/25.

I got a lot of gifts for friends and family, and renewed my subscriptions.

Backpacker DH and I both read this one. Fun stuff. I'm not a huge fan of the survival articles.

National Geographic Adventurer I really like this one. Good articles, excellent pictures, just good overall. It usually has more outlandish trips, once in a lifetime kind of things. But it's fun to read and dream about.

Self My one fitness magazine. I like it. It's enjoyable to read.

Cooking Light I like the 2nd half of the magazine which is actually about cooking. Not so thrilled about the 1st half which is about hobbies, fitness, and random stuff. I usually skim over that part.

Lucky My shopping mag. I'm not renewing it. I like it but the stuff is just too darned expensive, there's usually only a handful of things I could actually buy and it's depressing.

National Geographic I usually only look at it if there's something really interesting. This one's mainly for DH.

Sunset Another magazine I love. I think it's a must if you live in the Western US (there's a different magazine for each region of the West). I love that it's full of local attractions and it's really good.

Gourmet My sister just bought me this one!

I love magazines! I'd also like to get a web design magazine, not sure where to go with that. And maybe some financial ones (not a stuffy one though) and Budget Travel.

DH and I have realized that we are overwhelmed by our magazines and need to cut back. Between us we're getting like 20 magazines a month-- it's gotten a little crazy. We are each choosing four that we can't live without. I think this is what I'm going to choose:

Entertainment Weekly
Vanity Fair
InStyle
Conde Nast Traveler

I like the cooking and fashion magazines, but to be honest I rarely make any of the recipes or buy any of the clothes. So... out they go. I think this is what my DH is sticking with:

The New Yorker
Time
Newsweek
US News & World Report

I subscribe to...

Glamour
Allure
Taste of Home
Simple and Delicious

My husband subscribes to...

Motor Trend
Car and Driver
Playboy
Maxim

And I usually buy US Weekly if it looks interesting, and my mom saves all the People magazines she subscribes to for me. I can't get enough magazines!

We really need to cut down on our subscriptions:

Reader's Digest
Consumer Reports (gift)
Good Housekeeping
Redbook
Lucky
O (Oprah)
Ladies Home Journal
Woman's Day
JP (Jeep for hubby)
Popular Mechanics

I know there are more, especially for DH, but these are the ones I know off-hand.

Reader's Digest Eh, it was free and worth about that much to me.

DH only subscribes to one (Nerd Alert!)

Our nieces sell subscriptions through their school which is the only reason we get any but...

Men's Health and Women's Fitness - Honestly, I think we might rarely even skim them. Seems to be pretty much the same information every month.

Time - I enjoy getting this and read pretty much every one that comes.

Popular Science - That's his, I don't read it but he likes it.

I think we're going to add People this time. I need some mindless entertainment.

I usually just buy them b/c I don't like being on mailing lists, but I get every issue of:

Southern Accents (decorating magazine)
Cottage Living
Southern Living
Martha Stewart Living

I sometimes also buy New Old House, and I bought all of the Kitchen and Bath Ideas when we were renovating our house.

I used to buy a lot of the beauty and fashion magazines in my 20's, but now that I'm in my 30's I'm more interested in fixing up my house. I probably need some of the fashion and beauty mags though, but they just don't interest me as much.

I get Sunset, Oprah, InStyle, Gourmet, Cooking Light, Real Simple and Time. DH gets the New Yorker and the Economist. I cancelled my InStyle, and might cancel Oprah. Sunset is probably my favorite, though I also love Real Simple.
