i'm new here - i know a bunch of you from WC/LJ. i'm krdohert over there.
i've been reading a bunch of posts and get the idea that a lot of people are less than thrilled with W. If you could construct the perfect president, what traits would they have?

Those are really good. I definitely agree. And I would add that it is important to me to have a leader who tells the truth and isn't afraid to admit mistakes. I loved Clinton as President, but his lies about things that weren't even that important caused some problems that could have been avoided. So I'm definitely not just talking about our current President. ;) One of the things I admire about Clinton is that he has admitted regrets about decisions, such as waiting to become involved in the humanitarian crisis in Rwanda.

intelligent, kind, compassionate, decisive, concerned with the environment, focused on world peace, charismatic, and witty
I'm sure there are a lot of other traits, but they're escaping me right now.

hee! LOVE him! if we have a president who's religious, i'd really like someone like him who is a true Christian - who cares about social justice, poverty, peace, equality. you know, all the stuff Jesus cared about.

Ditto re Barack Obama! He's truly my dream president right now. Lucky for us here in Kansas, he's speaking at a Democratic Party function in March. I can't wait to see him in person! :D

It's nice to know other people from all over love him too! I was lucky enough to be able to actually vote for him, and I felt so empowered. He has a great career ahead of him.

Too bad he's way too old to be President! ;)

hahaha! i was gonna say - would he last 4 years?
i do like how strong he's been lately standing up for our civil liberties against the illegal wiretaps. he does seem to think for himself and not necessarily blindly follow the party line.

Agreed. I appreciate that he's actually supportive of trying to hold hearings on the domestic wiretapping. I wrote my Senator, Senator Pat Roberts, who is Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and he flatly refused to investigate, basically telling me that he and the President knew what was going on and that was good enough. :(

I've been saying this about Cheney for years, and he's still around and kicking...

Jed Bartlett from The West Wing :).
ETA: Seriously, I'd like someone who is fiscally responsible and socially liberal/libertarian (i.e., spend responsibly and get out of my business).

My ideal president would be intelligent, compassionate, honest, hard-working, open-minded, articulate, fair, and fiscally conservative. I would like my president to surround him/herself with experts in various fields instead of people who are owed favors. I want someone in office who will listen to both sides of an argument. My dream president would want to understand the motivations of people in an effort to prevent problems, rather than simply reacting to extreme actions. He/she would not be beholden to either political parties or lobbyists and so would be able to make decisions based on what was right, rather than who was helping with his/her re-election bid. My president would not view the world as a "Star Wars" movie with part of the population being "us" and the rest of the population "them." Part of this would be understanding and respecting nuance and that there are often shades of gray. This president would be proud of the good that this country does and recognize the problems, working to correct them. I want to have a president who can admit when he/she is wrong and treat the trust that the American people have given him/her with the complete respect.

My perfect President would be a King. That way we would have someone to blame, utterly and completely.

I agree with Diana, Clinton came darned close to being my ideal, except for the sideline escapades.
He was still the best we have had for MANY years. Right now, Obama is my top pick, but I don't think the party will take him that seriously as a nominee just yet, not quite enough experience to "sell" him properly.

I'd take a fiscally conservative Republican who isn't such a freak about gay marriage. That's the one thing that really annoys me about W. Cut taxes and shut up about gays, already!
