View Full Version : POLL: How many of the Best Picture Nominees Have You Seen?

I saw a poll on CNN.com the day the Oscar nominations were announced that completely shocked me. A full 75% percent of the respondents said that they hadn't seen ANY of the films nominated for Best Picture. I was completely amazed by this and was just wondering if CC had a similar demographic or if the people here go to the movies more often.
So.... How many of the Best Picture nominees have you seen? Which films did you see? Are you planning on seeing some of the others? If you haven't seen any of them, why not?
And just as a refresher, here are the nominees for Best Picture:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night and Good Luck
Munich
I'm really curious to see the results! :D

I've seen Crash - didn't really care for it. Wouldn't mind seeing Munich and Good Night and Good Luck.

Loved Crash. Haven't seen the rest, but then all the rest are relatively new movies and so I haven't had a chance.

I haven't seen any of them. I was surprised to see I'm in the majority on that.

I saw - and loved - Good Night, and Good Luck. I'd like to see Munich, Brokeback Mountain and Capote as well. I don't know anything about Crash.

I haven't seen any. It's really been a crappy year for movies...not much I'd pay $8 a ticket to see.

Try $10-$12. That's the going rate in L.A. Actually, I think there's been a lot of good films this year, mostly all released towards the end of the year, of course. If I was going to pick just a few that are still in theatres and worth your $8 I'd recommend Munich, Match Point and Walk the Line. Good ones to Netflix: Cinderella Man, March of the Pengiuns, Murderball.
I've seen all 5 nominees, but I do know that's not typical. Of the 5 films, my favorite was Munich.
I'm really suprised this many people haven't seen any of the movies, even though the nominees are a tad on the "arty" side this year. Why is that? Do you have young kids and it's hard to get to movies? Or did none of these movies sound interesting to you? Do you not go to the theatre much in general? Just curious. Keep those responses coming! :)

I've seen Crash (which I absolutely loved) but that's all and the only one I'm interested in seeing

I was beyond uncomfortably pregnant from September to Thanksgiving, and then had a baby the day after Thanksgiving. I haven't gone ANYWHERE since then. I'd love to see: Brokeback Mountain, Crash and Good Night and Good Luck.

Although I saw 3 out of the 5 movies, I can understand why so many people haven't seen them. Crash and Capote aren't shown everywhere. I saw both at independent movie theaters. I didn't see Good Night and Good Luck, but I'm assuming it's also not shown in all the major theater chains. The subject of Brokeback Mountain might have kept some viewers away. To be honest, I didn't even know Capote was a movie until I saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman winning the Critics Choice Award (and I considered myself to be an entertainment junkie!). :o I guess the publicity budget for some of these movies weren't as big as those for Star Wars and Harry Potter.
i saw crash and capote. crash was much better than capote. it's such an important movie. i would love to see brokeback mountain.

I loved Crash. I thought it was an amazing movie. Very well done. I would like to see Good Night and Good Luck and Brokeback Mountain.
Reason for lack of movie going: I have an 8 month old son and haven't been out to the movies in forever....so if it's not "on demand," I haven't seen it. ;)

Honestly, they weren't really my kind of movies. They are movies that I might watch if they come out on DVD or I could even wait until they are on the movie channels. We used to go to the movies every week or so, but nothing really appeals to me anymore. I'd much rather wait and watch on my bigscreen tv in my pajamas. Though, honestly, I rarely ever see the best picture nominees in the theaters.

Count me in the "haven't seen any of them" group.

I haven't seen any of them, but I can count on one hand the number of movies I've seen this year. We have a new DD and haven't made it to the movies much. Maybe next year. I usually only have seen 2-3 of them, though.
ETA: Just read the thread more thoroughly... I used to love artsy movies, and still do, but we don't have good art theaters near us in the suburbs. That, and DD, makes it a little harder to get to these days....

'm really suprised this many people haven't seen any of the movies, even though the nominees are a tad on the "arty" side this year. Why is that?Cause all but one of the movies was released in the last 3 months or in limited release or both (for example there was only one theater in Atlanta that showed Good Night and Good Luck). Only one is out in DVD. Who's had time to see them yet? I'm kind of disappointed by that.
On DVD
Crash - May 6th Limited (on DVD Sept 6)
Not yet on DVD
Capote - Sept 30th limited release
Good Night and Good Luck - Oct 16th limited release
Brokeback Mountain - Dec 16th
Munich -Dec 23rd Limited - full release in January

Every year I try to see all five.....this is the first year I actually did it. I am VERY torn about what I want to win - I loved Brokeback and Crash. I thought Phillip Seymour Hoffman was phenomenal in Capote. Good Night and Good Luck and Munich were probably my least two favorites....and they were excellent too! I thought it was a really great year for movies......as someone else said, Match Point and Walk The Line were fantastic too!

I make it a point to see all the Academy nominated films, which is why I'm going to be seeing Brokeback Mountain at some point this month. I haven't seen Crash yet, either. Guess I'll be renting that in the next week or so. Matt Dillon and Brendan Fraser are always nice to look at! ;)
Even though it isn't nominated as Best Film, has anyone seen A History of Violence? I've been dying to see it, but it hasn't been released anywhere near here. I keep doing searches for theatres within 100 miles, and nothing has shown up yet. Argh!!

I've seen 2 of the 5 (Brokeback Mountain & Munich), which is fairly typical for me. Often the majority of the movies nominated for best picture are ones I have not seen, usually because they just don't interest me.
I really liked both Brokeback Mountain & Munic, BTW. I thought they were both really well done.
I would like to see Crash & Good Night and Good Luck at some point...not sure if we'll catch them in the theater or wait for them to be released on DVD, though.

It was interesting, I guess, but personally I didn't really like the movie all that much. The acting was good, though. *shrug*

I have seen Good Night and Good Luck and Crash. We tried to go see Brokeback Mountain but it was sold out. I was so bummed, I'd really like to see this movie in a theater. I think it has been a great year for movies - some of my favorites - Cinderella Man, Murderball, Grizzly Man, 40 year old Virgin and The Constant Gardener.
We would still like to see Munich and Brokeback Mountain in the theater. I think we'll save Capote for DVD, netflix says it will be released in March 06.

I haven't seen any of them., most of them are new limited releases, which I usually still see, but..we had a super busy fall - with a DIY kitchen remodel, a couple family crisis and the busiest work months I've EVER had...I'm hoping to see a couple before the awards - but may not be able to. I'm disappointed - the shows are more fun when I have an opinion about who should win!

Not gonna lie - Munich is tough to watch, especially in some parts. Very intense, almost like a thriller in some aspects. I thought it was really great, however.
Have seen Munich and Good Night and Good Luck and liked both a ton. Would like to see Brokeback and Crash - Capote probably won't see. There are always one or two movies that are nominated for best Picture that I don't see because they do not interest me at all. For ex: The Hours (too dark and depressing), Lord of the Rings, Master and Commander, and several others from these past fwe years. Oops I spoke too soon. I saw all five nominated in 2005.

I'm another one who usually tries to see all five, but I almost never make it. This year I've seen two (Brokeback Mountain and Good Night, and Good Luck), which is low for me (I usually average 3/5), but I haven't had as much time as usual for moviegoing. I'm interested in the other three, but I'm a little worried I can't handle Crash (I have an issue with sexual assault storylines in movies).

That's what I was afraid of--I mean, I can't even watch the news reports re: what happened in Berlin--it just kills me.

I have seen Crash and Munich. I thought Crash was excellent, and Munich was good (I wasn't blown away by it, but I thought it was worth watching).
In order of preference, I would like to see Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, and Brokeback Mountain. I really want to see Walk the Line as well, probably more than the 3 nominated films I haven't seen.

Only the very beginning of the movie is actually about the tragedy at the Olympic Games in Munich. That part is definitely emotional and hard to watch. But the vast majority of the movie is actually about what happens AFTER Munich and how Israel responds to the incident.
Meatpie is right, it's very much like a thriller. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
The reason I loved this movie is that (a) the performances are incredible and (b) it raises all sorts of interesting issues about terrorism, violence, society's response to violence, what that violence does to our psyches... but it does it while taking you on this incredible, visual ride. I think it's one of Spielberg's best and most thoughtful films!

I loved Walk the Line - I was hoping it would get a Best Picture nomination, but I understand why it didn't, especially considering the competition. But the performances are truly impressive, and I would consider it a "must-see" for this Oscar season.
