Rep. John Boehner of Ohio won election Thursday as House majority leader, promising a steady hand and a helping of reform for Republicans staggered by election-year scandal.

Boehner, who replaces indicted Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, said the GOP "must act swiftly to restore the trust between Congress and the American people."

He defeated Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri on a vote of 122-109 by House Republicans after trailing his rival on an inconclusive first round.

"Life goes on," shrugged Blunt, who has long had close ties to DeLay and had been the acknowledged front-runner in a race to replace him. Blunt retains his post as GOP whip, third-ranking in the leadership behind Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Boehner.

"People were ready for more reform than he (Blunt) was offering," said Rep. Jeff Flake (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona, who supported a third contender, John Shadegg of Arizona, on the first ballot.

Flake added that Rep. Bill Thomas of California, the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, told fellow Republicans before the vote that Boehner was "a bridge to the old Revolution days," when the GOP stood for political change.

Conventional wisdom was that a vote for Blunt was a vote for the status quo and a vote for Shadegg was a vote for true reform with regards to pork spending. Boehner is supposedly closer to Shadegg than Blunt in this area. The republicans talk about fiscal restraint, but haven't been practicing it. If fiscal restraint is your cup of tea, then this is a step in the right direction.

I'm going to ask the most juvenile question ever, but how do you pronounce his name? If it's the pronunciation I'm thinking of... well, we already have a President whose last name has some interesting sexual connotations. :)

Thank God! Seriously, I did a happy dance when I heard this surprising news.

As an aside, when I lived in DC he was known as the Rep who threw the best parties. ;)

Darn it--I REALLY wanted it to be pronounced "Boner." Guess that's just too much to ask for.

Maybe it was, but he smartly changed it. Wouldn't you? :p

Interesting. Just for my own personal comfort, I'm happy to see Boehner elected majority leader since, hey, I'm in Ohio. But I'm a bit skeptical about the idea that he's a "breath of fresh air" or going to bring big reform. In '95, he passed out big tobacco checks on the House floor. Nice.
