I cross-posted to my last thread (New dog owner - Advice?).

Background is, my son and I were looking to adopt, and last week we met a boxer who was adorable, but the adoption fell through.

In an update, here's what I said in my other thread:

OMG, guys, I am so excited I don't know where to begin!!

We got a dog!!!! I am so happy! His name is Blue and he's a 1-year-old pure bred Weimeraner.

I saw a flyer at our local bank saying his family is moving and can't take him with them. This was yesterday, and things moved so fast! We went to meet Blue last night and he's perfect! He's playful and sweet and great with kids. His mommy liked that I work from home and that we seemed to fall in love with him as easily as he loved us.

So today, she dropped him off! He's running around right now trying to figure everything out, and keeps sniffing at the window, probably waiting for his Mom, poor puppy!

Capturing a picture of his roaming self was hard, so forgive the crappy compsition, but, without further ado...

In real life his eyes are yellow-ish, not red:

Welcome to our family, Blue!

Such a pretty color. I've always liked that breed. It's sad that his family had to give him up, but I'm glad he found a loving home.

Thanks, everyone! He's an absolute doll. We're already joined at the hip, he follows me all around the house and plops at my feet when I'm on the computer. He slept on my bed last night!

I was always fascinated by that breed. That, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Kissies from my doggie to yours!

Congrats! My brother has a Weimeraner named Blue too! He's a handful but very smart! My dad owns Blue's brother... Bo. They both look almost exactly like yours.

ETA: I'm not sure if you're considering getting him neutered, but I definitely recommend it. My dad and brother's Weimeraners both calmed down so much after they were neutered. Much less destructive too, I think.

Hi again, guys! Thanks for the responses and congratulations. As far as being a handful, so far so good. He's amazingly calm for a 1-year-old! He loves to run around when we're outside, but inside, he's calm and doesn't destroy things.

We're going to attend obedience classes because he's not that good at walking on a leash (his previous owner had a big fenced-in yard and he never really went out). He pulls and tugs so hard, my arm feels like it's ripping off! :p

I am thinking of having him fixed anyway because it seems like the right thing to do. But as far as behavior, he's really very good. I guess we lucked out!

I think classes are a GREAT idea! If it will be any amount of time before you go, you should consider a Halti headcollar - it TOTALLY changed our walks! One of my dogs in particular acted like she was pulling a 1 ton sled every time we would take her for a walk - it was MISERABLE!! With the Halti - she doesn't pull (which also means no choking) and can even walk next to us if we want her to.. You can get it at most pet strores - I found this info for you here. (http://www.companyofanimals.co.uk/halti.php)

HALTI Headcollar

Kind control
Stops pulling
Calms boisterous behaviour
Simplifies training
Corrects misbehaviours
Allows freedom to pant and yawn
On-off action to close biters jaws
Approved by vets and canine experts

If you have a large powerful dog or one that pulls on the lead, you will know how exhausting walks can be. Dogs of all sizes can pull on the lead to the point of choking themselves.

The Halti was designed by Dr Roger Mugford to come to the rescue of such dogs and their owners. Its revolutionary design is based on the same principle as a horse’s headcollar - if you guide the head, the body will surely follow.

Naturally following the contours of a dogs face and positioned well down the dog’s nose, the Halti gives you maximum steering power and control. The particular advantage of the Halti is its unique on-off muzzle-closing effect: when the dog attempts to lunge forward or attack, his jaws are closed by the slip ring. When he is relaxed or friendly, he can pant easily and act just like a dog. The soft material and careful design and construction ensures the Halti is comfortable and in many dogs can create a pronounced calming effect.

Halti comes in six sizes in black with sizes 1-4 also available in red, brown or blue. For dogs with sensitive noses such as Boxers or Shar Pei’s we recommend a padded Halti. To find out which size is suitable for your dog, please refer to our size guide.

Thanks, Sublime!!! My BF said his old dog (also a Weim) had a Halti and it worked great! I misunderstood and thought it was like a muzzle, so I didn't want one. But looking at the info your linked for me, I see that it's nothing like that and it lets them open their mouth. It sounds like a horse harness almost. I think we'll give it a shot.

Thanks again!
