basically how did you do it? lol i know that's a general question. but "practicing" with my DD and DH i usually don't "pose" them. I usually just let them play or do what they are doing and start snapping. I might give a suggestion here and there about what i want but no "posing." should i stick to this or do i need to work on that???? i tried a bit yesterday and it didn't come out too bad. (you can see in my blog what i mean) i like the "play and shoot" pics alot better, they seem to tell the story better but i dont know if that is acceptable. TIA! for any advice :)

I am not a professional, but I think that is part of your style - some people do the very posed family portraits, other photographers have more of the action shots. Also, kids are not really poseable IMO. :D You can tell them where to look, but anything more than that, good luck. ;) I have a few websites of photographers that I really like...
http://www.thompsonsphotography.com/index2.php
and
http://www.siribenrudphotography.com/
The second one is DH's cousin...she is self taught and does not do much for posing.
ETA: She does give direction and IMO that is different than posing...if you want to get into more than family/kid portraits, ie weddings, you'll want to shadow a professional (maybe take seconds) for a wedding or two to get some ideas.

Well, I started out photographing in high school. I took my first photography class when I was a freshman - and my junior and senior year I photographed for the yearbook and newspaper. Mostly, I photographed for myself - although I did do my first wedding just shy of my 19th birthday.
I went to college for photography, and learned a lot. The things I learned, and the equipment that I had access to (and was required to use) is what got me where I am today.
Yes, I do think that you should work on posing (I never stop working on mine). You can give direction and still shoot candidly. The reason being I feel like every photographer knows how to pose is because some subjects are just not comfortable "being themselves". Often times you'll hear photographers say "I'm photographing a heavyset (really skinny/autistic/etc) senior (mom/bride/etc) and I just don't know what to do with them".
Part of your job is to give direction. Also, while everyone should feel beautiful/handsome, its your job to look a person and know what type of post is going to be best suited for them. I do shoot a lot candidly but I try to mix a little bit of both styles into each session...including my weddings.
I'm pretty accustomed to shooting large family groups so posing is like 2nd nature to me. My average family grouping is anywhere from 15-20.
I'm always happy to answer questions.

armybratmommy - I'm pbing now as well. I find I cannot pose my own kids. They just won't let me do it. But it's much easier to pose other people's kids. My kids are so comfortable with me, they just won't do what I ask them.

Does anyone have any input either way? I'm wanting to get a little more serious with photography and want a good camera that will last me a long time.

I just took a short online class through my local community college. It was a great way to get started, and I could do all of my work online (I did have to go in to drop off my final project, but I could have just as easily mailed it). It was pretty basic, but I really enjoyed the challenges in the class (and some motivation to actually do the work.)

I looked at the semi-local vo-tech and found a few online classes offered. You don't have to be anywhere near the campus to take the course and I think each class costs about $80.

I know this has been asked before, but I thought I'd ask again ;)
Where do you order your pics from? I just received an order back from Snapfish, and the color is not good (very orangey/too warm). I know it is the printing because they do not look that way on my camera or my computer. I'd be willing to pay more to get better prints.

depends. are you looking to get them printed professionally or just for personal?
i use miller's lab but you have to have a business to access their site. or you could try www.mpix.com. with my point and shoot camera i just use walmart.

Ellyn - I, too, have had problems with the online printers, specifically Shutterfly. I've been on a mission to find a new place to print my really good colorful photos, especially the ones I want blown up.
I have heard good things about ScrapbookPictures.com (http://www.scrapbookpictures.com). They aren't outrageously expensive either. I might not get 300 pictures printed there, but the pictures worth showing or blowing up I would. They hand touch every picture so the color is supposed to be spot on.
I haven't tried them yet, but I intend to very soon. I took a ton of pictures at the pumpkin patch and with fall colored leaves so these pictures should be a good test for all the printers out there. Could be easy to print the wrong colors, you know? They also print various different sizes including 12x12 scrapbook pages, which is how I originally found them. 2 Peas in a Bucket (digi scrapping site) recommends them. If you use them before I do, will you please come on here and let me know how the pictures turn out?

Printing Pictures
I use a pro lab, but there are quite a few online places that are pretty good for consumers.
Honestly, the color outcome really depends on your editing and if your monitor is correctly calibrated. Also, many online consumer labs do their own color correcting - and some just don't print good color. Because of the lab that I use, and I do my own editing, I always make sure that I select "studio control color".
I know it was mentioned before, but I wanted to add that i have also heard good things about MPix.com for ordering :)

I third mpix.com. I just ordered a ton of photos from shutterfly to do some scrapbooking with and am really disapointed with the color this time too. I usually order only my better shots from mpix but I decided last night that I will just use them all the time now. The quality is 150x's better.

I have heard Snapfish's color quality is pretty poor from a professional/accuracy standpoint. However, you may also want to calibrate the color on your monitor to make sure that the colors taken by your camera and in your files are the same colors you are seeing on your monitor. I honestly have not done this because I'm not a professional and I just haven't felt the need to.
That said, I've heard lots about mpix.com and White House Custom Colour (whcc.com) being good.

Ooh! I LOVE these pictures, especially photo #2. I went to NC a few weekends ago and tried to get my pictures (which are very similiar to yours) to turn out like #2. I used the macro setting, but still didn't get quite the blurry feel in the back. I need to mess around with my apeture on manual mode I suppose. Did you do a custom setting or did you just use the macro setting on the camera? Great job! And I can't even believe it's not your camera, you just borrowed it. Maybe you do need your own :)

Armybratmommy - Your pictures are also beautiful. The picture of the dog is just priceless. It's like you set up a stage, stuck a dog in it, snapped a picture and there you go. It's just too perfect! That's a compliment :) I am going to buy that same lens you listed. I should have purchased it from the beginning, but unfortunately I didn't. I just went with the kit lens. It's fine, but doesn't give me exactly what I want and I do need a better zoom. What camera do you shoot with?

i have. not for sure quite how to describe it. lol. ummmm. i wouldn't say irridescent. like i ordered a picture with a tree in it and the bark of the tree, when you titled it certain ways, would look metallicy....really hard to describe. and they come with a glossy finish, not crazy about that bc of finger prints. i would just order one and see if you like it or not.

Metallic prints are AWESOME! I've never ordered them through Mpix but I have ordered them through Miller's and the other Pro labs that we use.
In my experience, metallic prints look awesome on B&W studio stuff and beach pictures. When printing location images on metallic, I prefer them not to be bright (for example, an overcast day on the beach or park, etc).

I have a question for all you photographers. I have a camera that my high school boyfriend game me that I don't want anymore. Can you give me an idea of what to sell it for? I am not looking to make a ton of money, just to sell it for what it is worth or slightly under. It also includes a flash you put on top, and an extra close up lens, I think (it says 2x teleconverter).
This is the camera, and you can read all about it here:

My gear is always carried on, never checked.
Whenever I fly I always use a Tamrac backpack (similar to this)

Mine also has a slot in the back for my laptop, which is also always carried on with me. I would never, ever, check my gear.

My canon xsi was stolen a couple of weeks ago, so I decided that I wanted to get a back that didn't look so obviously like was carrying a couple of grand of equipment in it--I'll still use my practical bags for travelling and when I am shooting w/ "everything", but I think/hope this will work nicely when I need to carry for my personal needs/shoots, and it dressy too!
Someday, I hope to get the wheeled green suede ...and I'll be the first one in line if they make a nice shoulder holster style bag

01-10-2009, 04:30 PM
I have recieved it, tgoody! I really like it. I'd say it is comparable to a smaller-medium sized camera bag.
My goal was to get something that I could use for daily use and get rid of my handbag as well. The zippered flap is a sidewards U and that is rigged so two zips simultaneously move as one and lift the flap to the right, so it gives you full access to everything inside. I have moved the compartments around so the left side can be accessed without fully unzippering.
On the left, have two stacked compartments. On the bottom, I keep my wallet, and a ziploc with diapering needs. Above it is where I store my small videocamera with a boxed filter or two.The bag also comes with a tethered pouch that nestles in there. In the middle compartment is my xsi body with attached lens (facing downward as if it was holstered). The compartment above it has wires, filters, and chargers. In the far right compartments, I put another lens and gorillapod, stored ontop of a camera rainjacket. With some reorganization, I think that I will be also able to fit in another flash if I ever get around to buying one!. The flap has elastic mesh compartments that will hold extra batteries and SD cards.
The only drawbacks are that the tethered pouch is not all leather like it is in the photos. It is made of the polkadot cloth lining with leather corners. ...disappointing yes, but not enough for me to not like the bag.
The strap is fairly comfortable with a small padding at the shoulder. I've worn it for about 3 hours without much pain. I am quite chesty and fat but the length still is comfy.
My husband knew that I ordered a new camera bag , but was in shock when he realized after a week...that the new bag I was carrying was my camera bag--lol! I have had two compliments already on it, and neither knew it was a camera bag either-so it is perfect.
I can't wait to see what the spring line will have to offer!
eta-The front pocket can fit the travel sized Target babywipes anda small notebook and pen. I keep my camera in one of the side pockets.

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question...I have a Canon Rebel, purchased a few years ago and LOVE it. But I really want an IS lens. Now the Rebels seem to all come with them. my lens is 18-55
I want one with more zoom and IS for less than $200. Is that possible?

Have you guys seen these bags!!! I just ordered the small red one. I am dying to see it in person, but I was able to read some reviews over in the photography websites and they are getting rave reviews.
http://www.jill-e.com/index2.html
My canon xsi was stolen a couple of weeks ago, so I decided that I wanted to get a back that didn't look so obviously like was carrying a couple of grand of equipment in it--I'll still use my practical bags for travelling and when I am shooting w/ "everything", but I think/hope this will work nicely when I need to carry for my personal needs/shoots, and it dressy too!
Someday, I hope to get the wheeled green suede ...and I'll be the first one in line if they make a nice shoulder holster style bag
Cute bag :) It doesn't look really easy to use on a shoot or anything, but for everyday (lunch out with friends or whatever) use it would be good :)
If you don't mind me asking, how was your camera stolen? That would be a total nightmare for me, so i'm just trying to avoid anything like that happening.
Currently I drag a lot of lenses with me to shoots, so i'm using a Lowepro backpack....but yeah, since everyone knows that "Lowepro" is a camera bag company, I get a bit nervous carrying it around places.

Hi Booey, I haven't "seen" you in forever!
here's the ugly story...
I won tixs to see Madagascar at the IMAX in Times Square. My husband also had to be in The City for a business meeting, so he decided to meet up with me and the baby. I always bring my camera with me everywhere I go ...but since it was Christmastime, I grabbed the whole shebang (in my Lowepro holster) since I was hoping that we would go to Rockerfeller Center to see the tree afterward!
When we got into the cinema, I sat down with it still strapped across me. Josh saw me sitting like that and said. "no, give it to me, I'll put it right beside me with the coats." It felt weird taking it off, b/c I always have it strapped against me and barely even notice it, but I gave it to him- :(
Big Mistake---he didn't even notice that someone reached under the coats and stole the bag that was 3 inches from him...he was so engrossed with fricken Madagascar!!!! UGH!
Afterward, he started to lecture me for bringing it with me...I just growled at him that I always have it with me, and *I * have never lost it. I think I scared him so badly that he slinked off and ordered me a new camera before we even left the cinema-lol.
So...I am pretty sure that he (we) was targeted b/c it looked like a camera bag...and that is why I wanted something low profile for when I am just in The City carrying my camera for personal use.

Can someone with a Nikon help me out for a sec? Can you tell me what setting to put on my camera on so that I can make everything in the background blurry (pretty blurry!) but have the subject remain sharp and clear? The standard macro button or child setting just doesn't give enough blurriness for me (if that is the correct word to use).
OMG Maryanne! That's terrible. I can't even believe someone would do that. Well, yes I can. My purse was stolen right off the back of my chair at a comedy club. I later found my wallet in the lady's room bathroom. Thankfully they only took cash, but still, in an instance my purse was gone. People can sometimes suck. It's a lesson you don't want to learn, but once you do ... you do! I love that camera bag. I'm asking for one for mother's day :)
Maryanne & Booey - Are you guys professional photographers?
Sal03 - Sorry, I have a Nikon so I can't help.

you want a small apeture number like 4.0 or 5.6 so you have a shallow depth of feild, i believe. if im wrong some please correct me im still learning too. but im pretty sure this is what you need. so i would put it in "M" and have a small apeture number and set your shutter to around 200. try that. i hope that helps. like i said im still learning so i could be totally wrong but im pretty sure that is how you do it.

I just got a Nikon D60 and was reading up on this last night. On M you control both the aperture and the other one (haha...new here too). I think if you put it on A mode and keep the aperture small you'll get more bluriness. The smaller the more blurry. And this way the camera picks the best of the P option (what the heck is that again :p). I haven't practiced yet though....but that's what I was reading. Good luck.

I'm very much a beginner, but what I do is turn the dial to the 'A' setting which gives Aperture (depth of field) priority and makes everything else auto. Push down the flash halfway then turn the black dial until you get to a low aperture number - I usually use 11. I have no idea if that's the right way of doing it, but that's what I use.

this is not a nikon question. it's a photography question calls depth of field.
just google some links, as they can explain better than i can.
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
if you have a point and shoot, then i don't know how it'd work...
and for what it's worth:
a BIG aperture is actually referring to a smaller number engraved on the aperture ring of the lens i.e. f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4.0 etc. while small apertures mean bigger numbers i.e. f/22, f/16, f/11, f/8 etc.
so use Aperture mode, then dial it to a big aperture (eg f1.4, f2, whatever the lowest your lens can go) to get blurry background.
to get the blurry effect, subject distance (between you and subject, and subject and background) also play a role. if you have the subject too close to the background, you aren't going to get a blurry background.

Thank you for all your replies to my question. I took photography class back in high school ... unbelievable to me that was nearly 16 years ago. Ack! Obviously I had a 35 mm (still a Nikon and still have it) back then so I used all my own settings. But I can't remember a thing and really haven't had the time to sit down and read or google or anything. I will though. I have this great camera, so I need to figure it out. I will say that I did remember that about the Apeture - the larger the apeture, the smaller the number. That always confused me. LOL What I didn't remember was what number would give the most blurred effect, so thank you!
I do have another question. Like the other, it probably isn't just a Nikon question either, but I do have a Nikon D40 and I just wanted you all to know what I'm shooting with. I have the 55 - 200 mm lens on right now. I was trying to take a picture of my daughter on the closest zoom possible. My camera just won't take the picture. Any ideas why? I thought maybe it was due to lighting but that didn't seem to have an affect ... I turned more lights on, turned them off ... nothing. I do not have an attachable flash, so maybe I need one. I never seem to have problems when I am taking pictures outside in natural light, although I haven't tried my new zoom lens on the closest zoom with a kids face right in the lens.
Army - I'm not doing that. Is that on 2Peas? I saw something similiar on there.
Booey - That's pretty cool! Do you have a website? What software do you use to edit your pictures? I have Elements and my husband just got Photoshop. I like the way you can upload with Elements and I also like the way it organizes photos. Wondering if Photoshop does it the same way.
Ummm - Thank you for the links. I appreciate it. I just hadn't had the time to read up and I wanted to try and take a pic this morning. I didn't get to though so I will read up tonight. I know my question wasn't related to just a Nikon, but I wanted to let you all know what I'm shooting with. Plus, I thought that some digital cameras come with different programmable buttons ... is that not the case? Like the sport, macro, child, etc? I know my point and shoot did, but I guess that is different than a DSLR.
I did not know that the subject should be further away from the background to get a more blurred effect. Thank you so much for that tip. That is good to know! I bet that is what the majority of my problem has been when I'm trying to get the blurred affect. It seemed no matter what setting I used, I wasn't getting the result ... and looking back at my pictures my subject is always pretty close to the background. I think you might have helped me a great deal!
kanga & miaclear - Awesome that you jumped right in to help even though you are newbies. Thank you! Maybe we can all learn together here.
Miaclear - Do you like your D60? I like my D40 but the shutter speed seems a little slower than I expected. I still love it, just wondering if I should have spent the extra $100 or $200 on the D60. The D60 has the built in vibration control, right?

tgoodynot for sure if it's on 2peas. it's just you take a picture every day for a year. have you read any books by scott kebly? i'm reading "the digital photography book" by him and it rocks! gives very good advice, like you had a pro with you. and he uses a nikon so his information on what buttons to push and what not will be great.

That's why I'm here :) I have another month to go till my classes start so I gotta learn from somewhere.
I literally unpacked my D60 3 days ago so I haven't had much experience with it and have only used it on automatic mode. I'd read a review that said that if you own a D40 it's not worth the money to upgrade, but if you're buying fresh the D60 is a great place to start. The lady at the camera shop I went to said the same thing.

are you too close to her? there is minimal focusing distance. typically the longer the lens (eg 200mm) the longer the focusing distance is. each lens is different. when you're too close, it won't focus. if it's too dark, then sometimes the lens have a tough time focusing, you may need to try manual focus. again, how good the lens focus in the dark depends on the lens.

not a problem, just thought it's easier to have you read up what some others have written so i'm not explaining it wrong. for SLR, Manual, Shutter Speed Priority and Aperture Priority modes are fairly standard (unless it's a real film manual camera, then you only get manual mode). i never used the flower, sport control. that's the beauty of having an SLR - you get the control.
Miaclear - Do you like your D60? I like my D40 but the shutter speed seems a little slower than I expected. I still love it, just wondering if I should have spent the extra $100 or $200 on the D60. The D60 has the built in vibration control, right?
i know aren't asking me, and i really have no idea about d40 or d60 since i use canon. but what do you mean but shutter speed seems a litter slower? you mean shutter lag? like how soon you take a photo after you press the button? if that's the case then i have no clue. but in terms of shutter speed itself, it really shouldn't differ much since a 1/30second is 1/30 second.
really, if you want to upgrade, i'd look into spending the money on lenses rather than the camera body itself.

Ok...so here's a question. My kit lens is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. I'm still playing around but when I put the aperture at 3.5, the lowest it goes, I'm not getting much "blurry". This was inside however and I know you want to have your subject farther away from the background than I can probably get inside. So the questions is....what aperture would you suggest to get that blurry when your subject is not that far from the background. A specific would be say you're photographing a baby's foot and want the baby blurry. What kind of lens would you suggest?
I found a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF on Amazon for $110 with great reviews. But I guess I'm just curious if there's more that I need to look at than the f/1.8? FWIW there's a 1.4 but it's almost 3x as much.
Thanks. I'm so clueless and want to get a good understanding before my twins are born.

Guess I can't post, but it's not hard to figure out ;)
I'm just a lurker in this thread usually but wanted clarification about the link posting = advertising.
How is it any different posting a link vs. the big ol' watermark on the pictures?!? Honestly, I don't get it. So technically, is it ok for Julie to post a link to her photography BLOG, since it's a blog...it is linked to her biz site though if that matters. Seriously, I am curious.

If the blog is a personal blog, it's fine to link to. But if it goes into the business aspects, it crosses the line. Or at least that's my understanding. I'll double check in the mod lounge for clarification.
Hmm..so it's ok to post a link in siggys like armybratmommy, but not post an actual link? ;) LOL
You can link to a blog as long as it's a personal blog and not a business blog. My blog is a business blog, so it crosses the line.
Emschwar....love that pic, can't believe it wasn't your 2008 favorite pic winner! It was pretty easy to find your blog :) I'll be stalking it.

armybratmommy - I just brought it up with the mods for clarification, but after looking at your blog, I don't think you're allowed to link to it in your sig. Since you have business info on there (current specials, etc), it's not a personal blog, but a business blog, and therefore can't be linked to in your sig. I'll report back once the other mods weigh in on it, but that's my understanding.

1) What are you currently shooting with (type of camera - brand/model)?
Samsung GX-10
2) Lense(s)?
Schneider D-Xenon 18-55mm kit lens, Tamron 70-300mm and an old 50mm 1.8 I picked up from a pawn shop that I love.
3) Professional, hobby...or hobby hoping to turn professional?
I just play around. I'm too much of a perfectionist to ever want to do this as a professional.
4) Subjects you shoot mainly? (Kids, weddings, landscapes, food, etc?)
Life, basically. Our house. And I love walking around town and taking pics of the old buildings and documenting our travels.
5) Favorite accessories (flash, lighting set ups, camera bags, etc?)
My bag - a Kata KT DR-465 Digital Rucksack. I had a Crumpler before but it doesn't even compare to this! I love it! I also like my gorillapod.
6) Post your favorite 5 photos you've taken.
These aren't my favorites I like them all and they make me smile. I don't know that I actually have favorites...

armybratmommy - It's definitely not a big deal to me. I'm still trying to figure out why it's ok to post photos with business names/watermarks on them...but we can't post actual links (even though anyone with half a brain can just Google the business name and find the site LOL). Sorry I used you for example... I was just curious why we couldn't post regular links vs. siggy links.

I am loving all the pictures in this thread. It really gives me hope. They are so artistic though and I am not an artistic person. I don't generally have "the eye".
I am trying to find some classes in my area to learn more about using the camera in general. I bought a book and it has some really good sounding exercises in it, but I don't get the results that I think the book is saying I should get. I did find a local "nature" photography club that meets once a month so I'm hoping to go to that on Sunday...DH is out of town, so I have to find a sitter.
emschwar, thanks for the clarification. I'm still a little confuzzled (water mark issue) but it doesn't matter b/c I don't have a photog biz. ;)

I would love to jump in here!
1) What are you currently shooting with (type of camera - brand/model)?
Canon Xsi - we upgraded to an SLR in December, so this is my first time shooting with one.
2) Lense(s)?
18-55; 55-250; and a 50mm f1.8, which a photographer friend recommended for the ability to take better indoor low-light pictures of my kids. I like it, but I need a wider shot for candids; this is nice for close shots though, although I'm still learning the right settings to use to optimize this lens.
3) Professional, hobby...or hobby hoping to turn professional?
Oh, definitely hobby. Although my dream is to be that friend that people are glad is at an event because she takes the best photos of their kids!
4) Subjects you shoot mainly? (Kids, weddings, landscapes, food, etc?)
My kids.
5) Favorite accessories (flash, lighting set ups, camera bags, etc?)
I have now officially moved from diaper bag obsession to obsessed with finding the perfect camera bag. No other accessories aside from lens protectors. I do not have an external flash.
6) Post your favorite 5 photos you've taken.
I'd have to upload to Flickr to upload here...maybe I'll do it later when I've got more time.
7) Do you have a website or Flickr, etc account you'd like to share with us?
Nope. I upload EVERYTHING to a Smugmug website to share with out of state family, though, since most of the photos are of our kids. I don't publicly share that, however.
I have a couple of EMBARRASSINGLY NOVICE-LIKE questions:
1) I am having a big problem in bright sun. Some of my photos are ending up with the orb-like circle in the middle from the sun (no matter where the sun is located when I shoot). I guess I need one of those things to put over the lens? What are the called and what should I get? :o
2) I don't have Photoshop or anything like that. I upload everything directly to iPhoto, then delete what I don't want, use iPhoto's redeye, crop tool, and upload them to Smugmug to share. iPhoto also has the ability to change to B&W & to enhance color automatically. Am I doing a disservice to myself to use iPhoto to change to B&W, sepia or to enhance color rather than using "real" photo editing software for this? Is this like the equivalent of ordering a filet mignon and then putting ketchup on it?
TIA!
ETA: Booey I have been on your site before (can't remember how I got there) and love your photos!

Taurus - I think what you're looking for are lens hoods. I'm not sure where you would get them because each lens I bought came with one, but I'm sure you ought to be able to buy just the hood.
Re: post-processing software, Photoshop is pretty expensive, especially if you're paying for a professional license. I know a lot of amateurs just go for the more affordable Photoshop Elements, since it can do most of the PP most people would need. I don't know how it compares to iPhoto, though, since I do my PP on a PC. If you find that you really do want Photoshop and are not using it professionally, you can try to purchase an educational license for the software. I got PS when I took an online course at a local community college and the educational license price is *way* less than the professional one.

Love seeing all the pictures! Gives me inspiration. I need to get my camera off my son and onto some landscapes and nature and other things!
Which leads me to a question? A LJ friend had recently posted some pictures of things throughout her day that represent her, her cup of coffee, some baked goods she made, a sleeping baby. Sometime this week I hope to do something similar with the theme of "a day in my life". With the intent of getting the camera off my son and onto other objects (although considering I'm a SAHM he's a HUGE part of my day). So my question is....does anyone have any similar assignments they've done.

Ellyn - I'd avoid the speedlight for a while. Learn to really use your camera first with available light, then move on to the speedlight. Do you have the book Understanding Exposure?

I've seen blogs where people do things like this. I think it would be a great motivator to learn how to use my camera in different ways. I think there is a CC group on flickr, but I don't think it has been active for a year plus.
I'm up for these type of assignments though if there is a group that wants to do them. Not daily, but I could do weekly or monthly ones. I'll join you on this one :)

Yea...cool! I was reading one of my photography books and the chapter on "what to photograph". One of his suggestions was to pick a color and photograph that color. So say green, you could do grass, your kids sippy cup, an emerald, etc. I thought that sounded fun. I'm not sure where else we could get ideas though....there has to be a website out there somewhere.
I NEED HELP!!!! So tonight I was taking pictures of my son jumping. I thought I'd play around with a few of the features on my camera and now it's doing something weird and I can't get it to stop. Before I was able to use the "A" aperture setting no problem. Now when I'm using it the camera clicks as though it's going to take the picture, and then it's seconds (maybe a second but it's a long time) later that it clicks to actually take the picture. I had been messing around in "S" with the shutter speed, but shouldn't that go back to an automatic setting if I'm only in "A". Cause that's what it seems to be doing is using a long shutter speed. Automatic mode works fine so at least I can still use it but I was really enjoying using "A" mode.
ETA: I should also say that now when I take a picture things that are white are flashing black then white and on and on. Like my sock.
And more help I had to buy a new memory stick when I got my camera. I had taken 133 random test pictures before I took the pictures of my son that I posted the other day. I actually took those pictures off the memory stick and put them on my camera, so the memory stick only had those 133 test pictures on it still. Now that I've started taking pictures again it's naming them dsc_0134 and up. Well if I try to put those pictures on my camera it's telling me there are files already there with that name. What's up with that? My point and shoot just remembered where it left off so I could empty the card and it'd start at the number that was next.

Sounds like you might have the self-timer on. Look on the back (is it a canon or nikon?) and see if you've got it on.

The white areas are overexposed. There's a setting that'll have them flash to let you know you've got them overexposed.

for the A mode problem, you could need more light. have you tried a different aperture number? is it doing that on every aperture you try? if so it might be the self timer like the pp suggested.
for the flashing white area, if you have a nikon, when reviewing the photo push the "down" button, instead of the "over" button, and it should scroll through your picture info, the histogram, and the "highlight" which is where the white is flashing.

I don't think it's the self timer. It's only happening when I don't use the flash. And in a lot of those instances the pictures are really blurry, as in the shutter is open a long time and I've moved a bit.
Thanks...I'll look for the setting to turn off that over exposure.

I've tried a range of apertures that the lens offers. It's only happening when I don't use the flash, in which case the lens is staying open longer and I'm getting a blurry picture. But if I don't use a flash it seems to be working fine. Thanks

It sounds like whatever aperature you're using requires more light which is fixed by using the flash. You can also try adjusting your ISO. The lower the ISO, the lower the shutter speed. At least that's how I understand it somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmmm...I'll try the more light thing but in a week of using that feature it's never acted like this, and it's basically the same lighting options I'd been using all week. The ISO has always been on automatic.
I'm really glad now that I bought it at a local shop rather than online as I have a feeling I'll be heading that way to have them help me figure it out :p
Thanks ladies for your help.

miacloorI also enjoy photography and would love to do weddings/portraits on the side. For the professional photographers here, how does one establish a business?
It's a lot of work. For starters, you have to have a wedding portfolio, which is usually the struggle for most photographers starting out. Secondly, and I can't stress this enough, is BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP, EQUIPMENT. When you shoot weddings, you need to have *at least* two of everything two bodies, lenses (although most take more than that), batteries (or grips), flashes, flash batteries, lens cloths, etc. I shoot with two bodies at all times, so I always take a third backup. You can NEVER go to a wedding without backup. The one time you go without, would be the day your camera breaks, shutter stops, etc. I think just about every wedding photographer has had it happen....I had a lens lock up once....it happens.
There is this huge misconception that because someone has a nice camera and their friends tell them they do awesome work, they should become a photographer. My philosophy is, if you can shoot RAW in manual and have your images be mostly spot on (cause lets be honest we all like to do a little tweaking) then you are doing pretty good. Weddings are hard work because they are very fast - and you can't miss anything. I would suggest finding a photographer around that you can second shoot with, one that will allow you to use the images for your portfolio. This way you are getting all the practice and keeping your images - without being the stress of the primary photographer and having to find the clients.
One last thing (and hope it doesn't sound crabby...lol).....Don't undercut yourself. If you think that for whatever reason your work is not worth $$$ just yet, then second shoot. One of the biggest grips for professional photographers (especially those of us that do weddings) are people who have side businesses because it's fun, then charge peanuts because either they don't have much experience or they just don't need the money. It's soooo frustrating to the rest of us where this is our career and people balk at our prices because cousin Sally with a camera will do it for $500 and give her all the pictures. Many of us have a lot of years and money invested in equipment, seminars, etc.
There are a lot of photographers who won't have second shooters (unless they work there full time) because they are afraid of competition. Not me, I welcome people who want to learn and second shoot with me or people who call me seeking advice or with questions. Why? Because I would rather a client pick someone else because they produce good work and click rather than because they were cheaper just "starting out" and needed the portfolio.

I had it set to automatic
f/3.5
1/60 exposure
ISO 200
Regarding my issues: I found a "reset to defaults" button on my camera (pays to read the manual huh). Seems to have fixed whatever I did. :p I'm still having issues with my memory card though. I completely cleared the card and reformatted it and it's still naming files names of previous files that had been taken off the card. I can't seem to find anything on the camera that would change this so maybe it's just a bunk card? I need to bring it in. It's really annoying me.
Palmbch.... I'm envisioning her on her changing table in diaper and shoes only. Camera is at table height so you don't really see her, maybe her nose or her tummy (assuming your changing pad is curved like most are). Her feet are sticking straight up with the shoes on.

miaclear - I can't remember - are you canon or nikon? I know there's a setting for canon that sets how you want the files named - but I can't remember what or what the options are :) If you've got canon, I'll see if I can figure it out, but if it's nikon, there's no point in me looking :)

It's a nikon. Thanks though. In the manual last night I read all about how it will assign a number and what the first three letters before that number means, but it didn't say anything about how you might be able to change how it assigns that number.

Ok I need some fresh ideas...DD has these little hot pink high heels. I'm trying to think of different ways to capture just how cute they are! Right now I'm thinking of looking for a pair of hot pink pumps in my size and having my legs in the photo and then also of putting her heels next to mine...but does anyone else have any great ideas??
Fishnets and a matching corset? Go for sort of a baby boudoir thing?

Mine does this too. I seem to remember reading that it's a setting with the camera and not the card. My old camera (same card) did not do this, but my D40 does. Everytime I upload the photos and erase them from the card, it starts back at 1.
ETA - found it via google. Go into SETUP MENU, then scroll down to File no. sequence. The factory setting is "off", turn it to "on" to keep counting after you upload the photos.

Ok...I don't have the File No. Sequence option under my Setup Menu :( But that gives me hope that I'm really close to finding something. I've been through all the menu options but I just don't see where it could be. Did you find that on a Flickr discussion board? I googled it too (after you said you did) and found a flickr board discussing it just two weeks ago so I posted there. Hopefully someone can help.
Thanks for some direction Kanga!!!

For some reason I'm seeing her sitting on a block (or something) in front of a solid black background in nothing but a diaper, wearing the heels and playing with a long string of pearls.
or sitting on the floor with the pearls, but the heels out in front of her (like she's playing with them instead of wearing them). That way you could see the shoe instead of just the sole.

I'd like to join! DH and I just got a Nikon D60 a few weeks ago. It's been a rough past few weeks at work so other than snapping a few pictures of my kids I haven't done much.
1) What are you currently shooting with (type of camera - brand/model)?
Nikon D60
2) Lense(s)?
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens
3) Professional, hobby...or hobby hoping to turn professional?
Hobby for now. We'll see how things develop once I get a chance to do more.
4) Subjects you shoot mainly? (Kids, weddings, landscapes, food, etc?)
Mostly my kiddos
5) Favorite accessories (flash, lighting set ups, camera bags, etc?)
None yet.
6) Post your favorite 5 photos you've taken.
None uploaded right now.
7) Do you have a website or Flickr, etc account you'd like to share with us?
Nope.

Question:
I have noticed what looks like a piece of lint every time i look through the view finder. i've tried different lenses and it is still there. we took the camera on safari and i'm worried that it's dust or something in there. is there a way to clean it (and where do you think the "dust" is?)
i have a canon xti.

I love how active this thread has been so I'll pose another QOTD:
What kinds of photography do you LOVE?
I like black and white photography on some occasions but I think it can be overdone, when it's done right I love it. I do LOVE bright vibrant colors in a natural setting.
What kinds of photography do you loath?
I can't stand b/w photos where one element is colored. Like when it's a wedding picture and only the bouquet is in color. Or a picture of a mom holding an infant and the mom is in b/w and the infant is in color (scary). A friend once tried to photoshop a picture of my son as a favor for me, she turned it b/w but left his eyes blue, and not just his natural blue but an exaggerated blue. It looked like my son was possessed. On it's own the picture is great.
I also don't like most "mall" studio pictures of babies. Babies in watercans, babies in wheelbarrows, etc. And yeah....I hate babies in pearls. On a rare occasion I've seen a professional photographer make these kinds of pictures cute, but for the most part I cringe when I see them. If you're going to the mall studio photographer I think less is more :)

Ditto!!
I can't stand the uber cheesy or creepy selective color. The creepy "eyes only", the tacky "only the baby's bow or dress", only the bouquet or one rose, etc.
I must admit that I recently DID do some selective coloring (but IMO I did it in a cool/fun/non cheesy way), but for reasons:
I was trying to set the mood for a gloomy/rainy day. The title of my blog post for these were "My only bit of color on this cold and gloomy day........"

Palmbch....I think Booey12 just proved to me that if done right it can look amazing.
Booey....those are great! I think in normal selective coloring I would have seen that first one with just the umbrella colored but having the whole child in color and just the background which really is just a background...it's great. It's not like a b/w bride (who is a very important part of the picture) and a red bouquet of roses. And the other pics I gotta admit I'm not a fan of on their own but they TOTALLY make that card! Great job.
FWIW here's the creepy picture of my son, I forgot about the faded edges...not a huge fan of that either. Compared to the one I color enhanced and cropped, framed and gave to the grandparents.

Niobe - no, my friend was not wearing a diaper :D She had her legs strategically bent to the side. It was a very nice boudoir pic, but she's an adult woman, I just wouldn't pose my daughter in "heels" and pearls.

The 100% most wonderful thing about the good ole US of A is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion! Yes the baby in heels pic is a different thing for everyone...some love it and some hate it...but I'm one of the ones who love it so therefore I put my gorgeous, non-sexy, 8 month old in a pair of hot pink baby heels :) IMHO they are feminine, not sexy.

booey- Such a creative card. Love the selective coloring in these photos. Now if only my daughter can wash the dishes! Did you create the tri-fold card yourself? Your daughter is beautiful!
miaclear- aww, your son is a cutie! I like your color version MUCH better.
palmbch- cute ideas for pics! Now that we're on the subject of selective coloring, how about taking a picture of your daughter playing with a whole bunch of shoes but holding the pink heels. The photo will be in B/W and the heels in color? I also like the idea of you wearing the pink heels in front of a cool wall (I picture something light-blue or a color that matches w/ the pink heels)... then I see your daughter either sitting down next to your legs or if she can stand, holding your legs w/ her "heels". Or, maybe do a little storyboard (3 pics) one of her in her heels, one of her crawling or walking towards your pink heels and the third of her trying it on and maybe add a little quote maybe something about following in your footsteps, etc... Sorry, I have all these ideas in my head! Good luck deciding!

Thank you!! The more blog visitors the merrier! :D
LOL....ahh yes, people ask me about her clothes all the time. In fact, I even had to add it to one of my "FAQ" blog entries before.....
http://www.lot116.com/blog.php?id=287
Q: PJ always has the cutest clothes! I love her style! Where do you buy her stuff??
A: I buy her clothes all over the place. If you've ever seen her closet (hmmm....I dare not take pics because it will show just how out of control I am, and it's quite embarassing LOL), it's INSANE. The drawers will barely open, and there is NO more room to hang anything.....so yeah...I have a problem. I can't stand it though, little girls' clothes are SO cute. I need to lose a ton of weight before *I* can even *think* about dressing cute, so yeah....I go crazy on her. Anyway, I love Etsy (www.Etsy.com), H&M, Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Baby Gap, Target, etc. I love fun, bright, funky stuff (especially for photos!!), and so does Punky Brewster....I mean PJ ;) I also love finding things that not every kid on the street will be wearing. Etsy is an AWESOME place for that. So much handmade/custom cuteness it's bananas. Last but not least, i'm a TOTAL bargain shopper, so even if I buy her WAY too much stuff, keep in mind that majority of it was bought on clearance or on sale ;) My husband (and my brother in law) are infamous for using the line "Just because it's on sale doesn't mean you need to buy it", but my sister's and I beg to differ ;) Hey, if it's 100+ degrees outside and there's a LONG sleeved shirt on sale for 97 cents at Old Navy....you bet your sweet bippy i'm buying it for fall/winter ;) Another cool thing about buying WAY ahead is that the chances of another kid wearing the same stuff the following year is super slim.
But yeah, I buy stuff all over the place. I tend to avoid Gymboree because A) It's rare that I find anything I REALLY love there....and B) when/if I do...it's way too much $$ anyway...oh and C) every other kid in the world will be wearing it anyway.
Another brand we LOVE is Paul Frank....BUT I don't buy full priced items (again..i'm a bargain shopper), so I go to their sample sales every once in a while and stock up. She's also gotten a TON of free stuff from them for doing a photo shoot for them :)

Gald I could help with the blog. It was so fun to look at everything. As I said, I am not artistic, so it is nice to look through things that artistic people can do. And that is why I hire a pro to do our family shots once a year :)
Thanks for the tips on the clothes. I figured some of them, but I'll have more to check out now. And if you ever want to sell any of PJ's clothes, my DD is only 23m :D
And yes, I am an extreme sale shopper. I put it on hold though when at the end of last summer I boxed up an entire crate of clothes that still had tags on because I guessed the wrong size or just didn't get around to putting them on DD.

booey Your work is amazing, very inspirational! I just have a few questions for you or for anybody who has knowledge :o
1) Which mode do you shoot in? (manual, AV mode, etc)
2) Do you use the histogram? I need to work on my exposures and don't really know how to interpret histograms.
3) I love the colors in your photos. Do you use any type of actions in photoshop?
4) What are the biggest challenges you find shooting kids? families?
Thanks so much!
Ditto Mamacha! I haven't really taken the time to learn more simply because I don't have time. My pictures just don't pop like this and it would be nice to have some insight as to what I might be missing.

02-09-2009, 12:45 AM
WOW....thank you ALL for the super sweet compliments :D Totally made my day.
1) Which mode do you shoot in? (manual, AV mode, etc)
I shoot in manual, but it's personal preference. My BIL pretty much only shoots in TV, some shoot in AV, it's just whatever you are comfortable with. Honestly, for a long time, I shot in auto and macro because manual settings scared the crap out of me. Finally one day I just MADE myself try and figure out how to use them, and i've been shooting in manual ever since.
2) Do you use the histogram? I need to work on my exposures and don't really know how to interpret histograms.
You know, actually I don't. Especially with active toddlers/kids, I don't have time to check histograms, so I just scroll my settings as fast as I can, shoot away...and hope I nailed some shots.
3) I love the colors in your photos. Do you use any type of actions in photoshop?
Cameras and lenses can make a slight difference in colors (for instance, to me, the colors are much nicer on the Canon 5D Mark II than the Canon 30D (just from my personal use)...but honestly, those serious color punched photos that everyone posts are usually edited (or actions) in Photoshop or Lightroom.....and yes, I use photoshop. I have Lightroom, but haven't had a chance to even attempt to learn to use it yet....plus all of my actions/settings are already on photoshop, so I don't want to have to re-make or re-buy them just for Lightroom.
4) What are the biggest challenges you find shooting kids? families?
Kids - snotty noses, crying/tantrums, running wildly in the opposite direction and being more interested in their surroundings (beach, park, etc) than the camera ;) LOL.
Families - I'm not a huge fan of the typical posed family portraits...but it's something that pretty much all families who are taking photos, want....so I "have" to do them. The biggest challenge is trying to get EVERYONE to look at the same time. Usually there's one person totally looking at the camera smiling (dad), one looking at one of the kids (mom), one kid looking at the ground, one kid looking at someone riding by on a bike, and one kid looking at me like "who the F are you?" LOL.
Also, booey, would you share where you got the monkey t and skirt???? Adorable! - The shirt is a Paul Frank (Small Paul) shirt that she received (along with a ton of other stuff) for doing a photo shoot for them.
The skirt (Icky Baby brand) actually belonged to my niece when she was little!! She's 9 now....so that gives you an idea of how old it is LOL!!I loved that skirt when it belonged to her, so of course my sister passed it down to PJ. I'm pretty sure she wears it at least once a week....and it would be EVERY day if I let her. I literally have to hide it in the laundry room and tell her it's dirty ;)
Hope I answered all of your questions.
Again, thank you guys for the kind words. I'm truly flattered :)

Where do you all do your online printing from?
I need a place that will let me print my original crop size. I made a card, and it is a 5x7 crop. I have tried uploading it to a couple of online places, and when I upload them it seems as though they are cropping them, or changing the size for a4x6, because when I go to order the 5x7, it crops them again?!?!?
Anyone know of a place that does that, or how do you get around that?

So what do you all do then? I crop all of my photos from 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, and then burn them to disc. I shouldn't do that then?
Does Anyone upload a photo at a different crop size and get them printed at an online photo gallery?

So I was all excited when DH told me he had an old version of Photoshop but chances are it's not compatible with Vista which is what I have. I can't afford to buy Photoshop for myself and am contemplating getting Elements. Can anyone give me their opinion on Elements. Would a hobbyist like me find everything I need in Elements? Or if there's another editing software (similar price) that I should check out?

mpix crops my photos too.
So what do you all do then? I crop all of my photos from 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, and then burn them to disc. I shouldn't do that then?
Does Anyone upload a photo at a different crop size and get them printed at an online photo gallery?
What size should I make the photo in photoshop if I want to crop it at 5x7? I am so lost here.............
I'm confused. Are you sure the file is 5x7? I've uploaded 5x7 files to various sites and printed w/o a problem. PM me and I'll see if I can figure it out.

I make 5x7 cards all the time and print from Snapfish (not the best quality, though)....I make it a 5x7 in Elements and never have any cropping. Hmmm... I'm not sure what's happening.

I've had problems with 5x7 in shutterfly but no other program. And I printed DD's party invites just using a photoshop file that I sent to Walmart. I hope you get it figured out. It would be very annoying.
mia, I only have elements and it gets the basics done. You can get it pretty inexpensive, so it would be a good place to start. I am pretty darn computer literate and I find it very unintuitive and hard to use. I took a class a few years ago to get the basics and actually would like to take another class or two this summer now that I have pictures I would actually like to edit.
So, part of the deal with me getting a dSLR was that I would stop running over to Portrait Innovations every time I "needed" a good pic of DD (DH is still on board with us doing pro pics once a year). Anyhow, DD's 2nd bday is coming up in a week and a half. And I need to do some pics of her. I haven't had a chance to take a class yet and all the workbook stuff I've tried all looks the same to me. So I guess I am going to just try it in auto first, then try some of the other setting and hope and pray I get some good ones.
The other catch is that I'm trying to figure out where to do the pics. It is cold and snowy here, so outside doesn't work. I guess I will just do them somewhere in the house. I'm so nervous about this. What if they are all crappy and then I don't have good 2nd year pics of DD. I know it's not the end of the world, but still!

Ladies, I need your help! I just got my Nikon D90 and know very little about it and photography right now. Currently reading and taking pictures of my daughter and dogs. lol. I have 4th row seats at an upcoming concert and want to take some cool pictures. How do I do it at a concert? With the lights and the fact that the band will be moving around, how do I capture the lights without making it blurry due to slow shutter speed? Thanks!

The venue will be dark, so you need a high ISO and a fast lens.

Just a heads up, most venues will no allow you into a venue with a good camera :( The rule usually is if the camera has a detachable lens-it is consided a pro camera.
So, try to go in early and leave yourself enough time to walk back to your car --just incase. If you leave it with their security. ,make sure you get a receipt! Jones Beach "lost" my friends camera once. Also, if you smuggle it in, turn off the screen so as not to briing attention to yourself.
Some bands, especially the hippie bands overide the rule-so you might be ok.
For festivals, I have taken my gorilla pod in too...it worked great as a tripod and is less conspoicuous.
Who are you seeing?

Hi all,
I tried to search and read through the thread a bit before posting, but I couldn't get through all of it (plus, I'm looking for current recs) - so I apologize if I repeat anything that has already been asked / answered.
Below is a post I made on my local mom's board (c&p'ing b/c I really should be working!, but I can't stop thinking about this)
I love taking pictures, but have pretty much only ever used a point-and-shoot. I recently got a new compact Canon which I love (love being able to just throw it in the diaper bag) - but even when it's fast, it's not fast enough to catch the smile or whatever it is I'm trying to catch before Seth moves / runs away / changes his face. I have more closed eye, unsmiling pics than I care to admit. I think I could get better pictures with a faster shutter speed (is that what I mean?). I love to take outdoor (scenery shots) as well - and at some point, I'd probably like to learn more about how to really use a camera.
Any recommendations for a beginner's digital SLR? Does an SLR sound like it would do what I am looking for in terms of taking pictures faster? I would probably want something that is pretty automatic, with the option to make manual changes as I learn more.
Thoughts? Comments? Tell me I'm crazy and I should just stick to a P & S? General price info would be appreciated too - I don't want to go too crazy here.
I'm probably hoping to stay in the $500 or under range. Some photogaphers on my mom's board suggested the Nikon D50 or D60 - I saw the D40 recommended here.
Thoughts? Opinions or Recommendations?
Thanks!

RobynScott....I got the Nikon D60 and love it. Yes it will take pictures MUCH FASTER than a point and shoot! Just yesterday I was taking pictures of my son at the park and got pics of him at the top of the slide, about 4 on the way down and then at the bottom. With my old point and shoot I'd have gotten a shot at the bottom as he walked away probably :p
I did pay just under $600 for the kit lens and a memory card as well. I think the D40 would probably be a great option for you as well. I see on Amazon the D40 with a kit lens is $412. I had debated buying online but went to a local camera shop to hold a few and decided to buy there instead. It cost me a little bit more but they have been SO helpful in everything. Plus with my purchase I am able to go to all their camera classes (8 total and I've taken 3 so far) for free, they usually charge I think $20 a class. It's been really helpful. I bought from Wolf Camera. I also bought the warranty from them which is nice as if anything happens (unless it's stolen) they will fix it for free, and I don't have to send it in to an online fix it shop.

Thanks ladies. So, one of the moms on my local board is looking to sell her used Nikon D50. It's a small group so I don't think she would try to screw me in any way. Here's what she's offering and asking - can you tell me if this sounds like a good deal or if I should keep looking?
-Nikon D50 + 2 kit lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009GZANC/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller= {different lenses shown on this link}
-Battery + Backup battery + charger

-(4) Lens filters: http://www.adorama.com/FLK52.html?searchinfo=tiffen%20lens%20filters&item_no=10
-2 GB San Disk SD card: http://www.adorama.com/IDSSD2G.html?searchinfo=SanDisk%20SD%20card&item_no=5
I'm asking $600 and it still has the manuals for the camera and the lenses. No original box but everything is in stellar condition since I have a special equipment bag I have kept everything in since I bought it...basically I treated it like my baby (before she had her own DC).
Note this mom now has her own photo business, so I am assuming that is why she moved on from this camera.
Thanks for any thoughts!

RobynScott...I don't think it's that great of a deal, if a deal at all. The D50 is not produced anymore and was replaced with the D40. the D60 is the upgrade to the D40. The extra lens she has you can buy for about $170 on amazon right now (and you may not even want it), and the other items are things you can shop for and buy as you need and want them (well aside from the SD card but they're so cheap now). And obviously a new camera would come with the charger and all that. I'd personally rather have a brand new, newer model camera for less money and shop for my own accessories as I need them.

Ditto! I was thinking the same thing earlier but didn't have time to post.
So many factors go into buying a used camera. I personally wouldn't do it, but it can be okay. I would want to see it first, and also find out how many images she has taken with this camera. Also, for a starter like yourself the accessories just aren't something that you need yet (and probably won't need).

Thanks for the fast advice ladies - I really appreciate it. I have to let her know fairly quickly if I'm interested. I know the camera was used from September 2005 - March 2008, but I don't know how many images were taken.
I was reading something about the D40/D60 not using autofocus lenses? ETA - OK, I've read some more and I guess the D40 needs AF-S lenses - I don't really know anything about additional lenses though (and I imagine it will be a long time before I want one._
What I know is that I need something entry level, that can have the functionality of a point-and-shoot with the ability to grow into something I can make adjustments too / adjust manually.
Also wondering if I should buy through a store in order to get a warranty.
Again, all of your thoughts and comments are really appreciated - thanks!
ETA - According to Ken Rockwell, I should be looking at the D40. Ack - I don't know between the 40, 50 and 60. And like Aimee says in her post below, I really think I should be looking at Canon's as well. I was thinking I might like the familiarity of the menus.

If you can get to a B&M store, I'd go and feel the Canons versus the Nikons in your hand. If you're already using a Canon P&S, you may find the Canons feel better in your hand and that the menu system makes more sense.
I love my Canon Rebel XTi; the layout, the menus, everything on it just makes sense to me. My MIL has a Nikon (can't remember if she has the D40 or the D60) and it feels like a toy in my hands and all of the controls are just totally counterintuitive to me. But, I hear a lot of people say the Rebels are too heavy/too big and the menus make no sense to them.

Yes definitely go to a store and try them out! That might make the decision there. And I'll push it again to buy from a camera shop if they aren't WAY overpriced. If they offer the support and help (and the classes like Wolf) it's well worth it IMO.
I think the D40 and the D60 are both really good entry level cameras. When I went to test drive a few I kinda went in with the mentality that the D60 is what I wanted and before saying that the lady I talked with (and have since done all my camera shopping with) brought out the D60.
I'm still learning about lenses myself but I'm not familiar with the D40 so I'm not help to you there. The D60 though the kit lens is autofocus and the few that I've researched to buy are also.

I definitely agree to go try them out. I thought for sure I would want a Canon based on our great past experiences with them. But when I tried them out and held them, the Canon did not feel right and I kept hitting buttons that I didn't want to hit. The Nikon fit me better.
DH bought my D60 at Costco but we did look at the local camera shops. They just weren't even in the ballpark compared to the deal he got. But I have signed up to take some classes at my local shop and even paying for those, we are ahead. So definitely shop around.

I'm fairly sure my H got my Rebel from B&H Photo which is an online store, but they also have a B&M store in NYC. They are very reputable and usually have the best prices on things.
Once you get the hang of the camera, you start wanting additional lenses pretty quickly. The next lens most people get is a 50mm, f1.8 portrait lens. The Canon version is about $100, and I'm assuming Nikon has a similar piece of glass. From there, I got a 75-300mm zoom lens, and I just got a 55-200mm with IS because, at full extension, those suckers are heavy and hard to steady!

I have a D40, which I love. I got it last summer. Anything above that is great, but if you just want to shoot your family and take good photos, I highly recommend it. The lens issue is that if it is not an AF-I or AF-S lens, you have to focus it yourself. The only lens that I have to focus myself is the 50mm f1.8 lens, but it is so short that it really is not that hard. The reason is that the camera doesn't have the lens focus switch on the body, so it needs lenses that have it on the actual lens to auto focus. The kit lens (18-55) is fine, but I would rec another lens too. The size of the megapixels is really about how big you want to make repros. If you are going to be printing lots of poster sized photos, you might want to get one with more.
I am taking a class now, and I have no disadvantage behind those with D60s to 90s.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I went to the local camera store - Ritz (the also own The Camera Shop and Wolf's Camera) and checked out the Nikon D40, Nikon D60, Canon Xti and Canon XSi.
I'm pretty sure I am leaning towards the D60. It's only $100 more than the D40, so I'm not sure why I would choose the D40 over the D60 (unless it's b/c Ken Rockwell says so, but that was when there was a $300 price difference). The feel of the Canon and Nikon weren't too different to me (maybe that's b/c I don't know what to look for ;) ) - but I preferred the Menus on the Nikon way more! Even though I know the Canon menus, abnd even though the Canon has a bigger screen - and live action - I found the Nikon menus more user frienfly - and I loved that you could hit a button and get an explanation of the menu item.
So, now I need to find the best price and decide whether to buy from Ritz or online, and whether I need more than one lens.
Rotz is selling the D60 for $550 with the 18-55mm VR lens. If you buy the 55-200mm VR lens at the same time, it's $150 for the second lens. If you buy it separate, it's $250. Should I buy it now? I also got the salesman to maybe agree to throw in some filters (don't know if I need any?) and if I buy the two lenses with the camera, I can also get a Nikon camera bag. It's nothing fancy, but I'm sure it would do. Ritz also offers the photography classes if you buy from them - and you can get an extended service plan.
Thoughts? Any idea on what I should be looking to pay? Do I need more than one lens? Do I need / want filters? Are the Ritz classes worth purchasing from them?
Also, if I don't want the filters but want to go with Ritz, I can drive to Delaware (about 30 - 45 mins) and avoid sales tax on the camera - so similar in that respect to buying online.
Any and all advice appreciated - thanks!

Robyn...that's essentially the same deal I got at Wolf (makes sense since they are the same company :p). I ended up not getting the second lens, at the time it wasn't the VR and that's what I wanted. But after the fact I'm glad I didn't. My budget was $600 and I was very glad to stick to my budget. I also already had a camera bag so I didn't need one. Are they not offering the classes for free? They told me anyone who buys a camera (over a certain amount) from them is offered the classes for free. I've been to 4 of them so far and the first two were stuff I knew, the second two were very helpful. Of course my instructor is really cool and a good teacher so that makes a difference. I'm sure you can find the camera cheaper (on amazon right now it's $534 with the 18-55 lens). I'm still really glad I bought local and not online for my camera. With lenses I'll probably look more online.

Robyn - Hi! I have the D40 and love it. Had the D60 only been $100 more when I bought my camera, I may have gotten it. Although, I do think the D40 is smaller. Could be wrong. You can definitely find the camera cheaper online so unless you really want to buy in a store keep that in mind. I bought my D40 for $350 with lens.
Here's my experience with lenses. Keep in mind, I shoot mostly my family (2.5 and 1 year olds) and I'm not professional (or close to it LOL). I have the 18 - 55. I thought that would give me enough zoom. But IMO it does not. I would skip the 18 - 55 and get the 18 - 105 or 18 - 200. It's the biggest PIA to stop what you are doing and change lenses. DH gave me the 55 - 200 for Christmas and I took it back because I found the zoom on it to be too great at the lowest zoom for close pictures and it was the biggest PIA to change to the other lens (like I said). I took that back and plan to just get one lens - probably the 18 - 105 because the other lens is much more expensive (for the VR anyway). It's just easier, more convenient, and quicker to have 1 solid lens. HTH!!

on the d40 and d60...
be careful when buying lenses. not all nikon lenses are compatible with these 2 cameras. for example, the 50mm 1.8 that's about $100 by nikon isn't compatible with either (the auto focus won't work). you'd need to upgrade to the $400 version of the lens to get a 50mm that works with either of these cameras.
for this reason, if you plan on buying additional lenses besides the kit, i recommend finding a used d70 (it's been discontinued but is a fabulous little camera) or a new d80. while the body may be more, you'll save money on your lenses since they are compatible with anything.
on the lenses..
the 18-55 is NOT a zoom. it's actually a wide angle lens. think of it this way.... a 50mm lens is pretty much 'what you get is what you see' so when you look through the viewfinder it's about the same 'amount' of image as your naked eye. the high the number the more zoom so the more 'close up' compared to the naked eye. the lower the number the less zoom so the more 'further away things appear compared to the naked eye.

Technically it is compatible, it just depends on if you care about using AF or not. I have the D40 and the 50mm lens, and it is pretty easy to focus. It is a short lens, so there is not a lot of play in the focus, and you know when it is focused because there is a little green dot when you look through the viewfinder that lights up when it is focused. I have actually gotten some great photos with my D40 and 50mm lens.

Thanks for all of the advice! I am still confused as to what I should do. I don't like the idea of having to buy more expensive lenses if there are less $$ ones available. The "deal" I was offered on the D50 doesn't sound like much of a "deal". I don;t think I can / want to spend on the D80. Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy to be thinking of a DSLR at all. FIL offered to lend me an old film SLR, but not sure I want to go back to film.
Would I avoid the lens issue by going with Canon?
Can I get away with the D60? For those of you that have the D60, how many lenses do you have / did you start with? Should I just stick to the kit lens and get more later if I want? Get the addiional 55-200 VR lens from Ritz for $150?
ACK! Sorry for all of the newbie questions - I just don't want to make a "wrong" decision. Thanks!

I have the D60 and love it. Very easy to use. When I was debating between Nikon and Canon, I hit up a local camera store and tried a bunch of models. I felt most comfortable with the D60.
I have the standard kit lens and also a third party prime lens which I love. The prime lens is always on my camera - I haven't shot anything with the kit lens in months since my prime arrived (note: I do mostly shots of my kids or micro shots of flowers, I don't do landscape shots).
This is the 3rd party lens that I have and love. It will AF on the D60.

Then he showed us how one worked and everyone was amazed at the difference from the "auto" to the "manual set" white balance. Wow! I take a ton of indoor pics and they always come out with weird color casting because of the random lights from fixtures and such. It's about $100 for the largest size. They make them to fit on your lens but everyone says to just buy the largest and hold it to your lens for the milisecond it takes you to take the picture. Does anyone own one of these?

Any other gadgets anyone wants to share? Not even specifically to lighting.

I'm currently taking photography classes online through our 'local' tech. college and it gives college credit :)

White balance - I'd heard mixed things about the expodisc. I just got a whibal card, which I read great reviews of, and it's cheap ($30 + shipping). I haven't used it yet, but it's much simpler to use than the expodisc.
miaclear
03-13-2009, 08:23 PM
emschwar....how is the whibal easier to use? No snark, I'm curious cause I've never used anything for white balance and the demonstration our instructor gave us was very simple. Disc over lens, point in direction, shoot.
emschwar

with the expodisc, you use it to set a custom white balance on your camera. So, put on the expodisc, take a shot, set the cwb, shoot your pics.
The whibal is used for setting the white balance in PP. So, you shoot your pics, and just make sure you have a picture of the whibal card in each light setting you used (so, if you're over by these trees, you take your pics, and a pic of the card, and if you move over here to another spot, make sure you have another whibal pic, etc). You can take the whibal pic first, or last, or in the middle. Then, when you get home, and start editing, you use that to set the white balance on the pics in that scene. Make sense? There's a really good video on the whibal site (www.whibal.com) that explains it better than I can :)

Ahhh....gotcha! I'll have to look more into it I guess. I was pretty amazed with the demonstration :p But you're right....$30 sounds better than $99.
emschwar

Yeah, the $30 price point is very nice :)
A fellow photog friend recommended the whibal to me. I really struggle with wb, so it seemed perfect (and easy to use, and in my budget!). There's a video demonstration on the whibal site that explains it all.
Here's the video - http://www.whibalhost.com/_Tutorials/WhiBal/01 It's a little hidden on the site :)

I'm hoping one of you ladies can help me out. I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W130 camera and really don't know much about photography. Every time I try to get my pictures printed online (i.e. Snapfish), I get a message that my pictures were taken with a digital camera and either I have to crop them or they can print them in a smaller format (5.3 x 4). Sometimes I can't crop because it would cut off an important part of the picture and the 5.3 x 4 format doesn't fit right in frames.
My camera has the following setting for image size:
8M (for prints up to A3 11x17") - what I'm using
5M (for prints up to A4 8x10")
3M (for prints up to 10x15 cm (4x6") or 13x18 cm (5x7")
VGA (shoot at small image size for e-mail attachments)
3:2 (shoot in 3:2 aspect ratio)
16:9+ (for viewing on HDTVs and printing up to A4 (8x10"))
16:0 (for viewing on HDTVs)
Am I using the wrong setting on my camera? I'm trying to get the best resolution possible in case I do want to blow up the picture, but I'm not sure what's going wrong.
TIA!

P&S digital cameras don't shoot 4x6 frames. They shoot 4x5.3. That's the problem. You can print large images with the setting you're using, but you're never going to get a 4x6 crop ratio because your camera doesn't shoot at that ratio.
Oh duh, I just looked at those settings. Try switching to the 3:2 aspect ratio. That should give you a 4x6 crop ratio. I'm not sure what the quality will be like though.

I just did a quick search and found that the 3:2 ratio is 8M resolution.

Can anyone help with a basic question? Until I have time to really learn more about my Canon Rebel Xsi, I've been mostly using the auto setting. When I go to shoot, only 1-3 of the many focus lights light up, and then it always focuses on what is closest to the camera no matter what. I am getting a ton of photos where the main subject is not in focus. And I can't solve the problem by half-clicking to focus on the main object, then move the camera, then click either because so few of the focus lights are lighting up, it's like it's just not catching the main subject. Any tips?
ETA I'm playing with it and seeing how sensitive the focus is, you really have to make sure the 1 or 2 lights that light up are focused on your main subject and then not move the camera, and DH is bad at this and a lot of the pics he took of me last night at my sister's wedding rehearsal are blurry! I just wish I could hand my camera to people and it wouldn't automatically focus on what is closest to them...my cousin took a great pic of me and DH, we were sitting next to her, and DH's shirt/shoulder is clear but we are blurry. :(

I came to the conclusion last week that I really need to get my butt in gear and get into these classes I have been talking about. A friend of mine is a pro photographer (I actually met her on here, but she tends to stick to parenting boards) and she had a new lens she wanted to practice with. So we took DD out for a "shoot". I brought my camera along and she was trying to give me direction as to shutter speed and aperture settings she was using, tips on framing, etc. I was so lost. She spent more time helping me for the first 15 min then she did taking pics. I finally gave up, switched it back to auto and started clicking. I was still thrilled with some of the shots I took since I copied her shooting locations/timing. Things I wouldn't have normally seen or thought to take pics of.
edited to remove pics of DD
I can see that it is more crisp, has better lighting and more focus on DD vs the background...and I basically cropped similar to hers just to see what mine would look like.
Anyhow, it was fun to get out the camera and play around with it while I had a teacher on hand.

I know she generally does some retouching on all her real shoots. I don't know if she did on these pics or not. Obviously, she changed it to B&W, so she did something.
I'm a little disappointed about the classes though. I want to take the basic one on my camera, but there is no class listed and I want to take one on how to pick which settings to use. The first class of the series is the same day I am hosting a baby shower, so no go :( I haven't found any other classes around to take.

Hey there everyone!
I'm currently working towards a photography degree myself and am rounding out my first year in the program.
I shoot with a Nikon D80 but I'm hoping to up grade to a D200 soon. I've got the SB-800 and I'd really recomend it... you get so much more bang for your buck with this flash.
I was wondering if any of you have the Nikor F2.8 24-50 mm lens or the Tamron equivilent? I really want a nice prortrait 2.8 lens but the price difference between Nikor and Tamron is huge and wanted to know what you all thought of the quality and differences.
Boilermaker~It definitly looks like your friend may have touched up her photo in curves in photo shop and maybe sharpened her image as well. It looks like she has her Aperature wide open too but otherwise your shots are very similar. I adjusted yours in curves a bit and it looks very much like your friends aside from the depth of field. I think it is a great shot!

berber, that's pretty cool. So adjusting in curves helped with the color issues (her coat for instance))? Is that an option on Elements or do you need full blown PS? I only have Elements and can't really justify the cost of PS.
I couldn't figure out how to get my aperature open like hers, so I gave up ..hence the need for me to take a class!
BerBer
04-09-2009, 07:05 AM
I'm not familar with Elements but I'd assume you have a curves layer that you could play with... I pulled the curve just below the baseline on the dark end and pushed it up in the skin tone area to give it that glowing affect. Curves really helps with having the most control with contrast and brightness and darkness... that is the only place I do those adjustments.
For me learning to get comfortable with aperature settings I set my camera to Aperture priority (the A mode on the dial) and then let the camera set the sutter speed. I'd put my aperture on the lowest number my lens will go and work my way up just to see the differences.
Good luck!

I'm thinking of taking a photography class... can anyone suggest a good starter camera? I've heard lots of good things about the Rebel. Should I get that one? Everyone always sees my pictures and tells me I've missed my calling, so I'm really thinking about diving into it at least as a hobby for now.

As a hobby camera, I'd say a rebel is perfect but as a potentially professional camera it isn't really up to par. I'd go with the Cannon 40D if that is your ultimate goal. I'm a Nikon shooter so I'm not totally up to speed on Cannons though...
But if you are going for a hobby camera get the cheaper body and spend your money on the glass for sure! So a Rebel would be perfect.:D
Manteo~ I love those maternity shots you took, very unique and they look very comfortable and natural.

Not a professional but used a few :p For all my family shots I seem to get about 15-25 to choose from. I used to be peeved about this number knowing they took like 200-300 pictures. But then I came across a few photogs who would sell you a DVD with all 200-300 on it and it was awful. The editing if any was slim to none and pretty much after going through it myself I'd fine 15-25 good ones :p

For me it totally depends on the type of shoot.
A family session usually ends up with around 40 (sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the situation).
An engagement shoot usually ends up with more as we usually do a couple of locations. Last weekends engagement ended up with around 80 - but they also brought their niece and nephew along and that number includes some shots of the kids.
A wedding can be anywhere from 300-1000 depending on the length of time contracted for the event.
Honestly, any good photographer will obviously weed through and get rid of any photos they don't think meet their standards. That being said, just because I shoot more than intended during a shoot doesn't mean I spend less time editing to get through it faster.

Hi ladies-
I'm sure this has been asked before, but this is such a long thread, so I'm going to ask again. ;)
I'm in the market for a DSLR. Which one do I get?
Couple notes:
> I am not a professional photographer- I use my Kodak C875 now for taking pics of my kids and family. I just want to be able to take better pics!
> I have a budget of around $500.
> I have no problems getting a refurbished camera since this will be my first "practice" DSLR and lord knows how good I'll be. I don't even know if there is any place to buy cameras like that.
> How do I figure out what lenses I need?
I'm treating myself for my 31st birthday in July and trying to figure out what I want so I can have it in hand for the bash we're throwing! I'm also signing up for a how-to class at my local community college so the camera isn't wasted on me.
TIA- I greatly appreciate all the help I can get!

heather719, hit a camera store and ask to play with their entry level cameras from canon and nikon. they're comparable as far as features and quality go, but you might find that one fits better in your hand than the other. that was the case for me when i moved from film to digital.
