Ah, I think part of the problem is that the original is slightly underexposed, which affects the contrast as well. Bringing it up to a proper exposure first will help with your conversion! :)

thanks for all the tips, everyone!

kimmy, i'm definitely putting that dvd on my xmas wish list... i read to page 5 in the manual and gave up bc all the terminology was confusing me.

i definitely don't want to try and pose the kids for pics but i'm finding that i'm just having trouble keeping up w/ them and focusing properly for a shot before they're up and off to the next thing. i guess this may get better as i get better at handling the camera.

I was hoping to barge in and ask for some advice? ;)
I want to take better pictures of my baby. I have a cannon rebel and I can't get close enough with my 'standard' lens.
My DH has offered to get me a lens for christmas, but I dont know what to ask for? Advice?

50mm 1.8 lens. You can get it for about $75 at http://www.bhphoto.com. It'll focus fast and help you to get closer.

what is the 'standard' lens you have now?

what is the 'standard' lens you have now?Oh good question. I was assuming that the "standard lens" was the one that came with the DRebel - the 17-80 or something like that. :)

It's a f2.8 28/50

well, if your current lens already reaches 50mm and thats not close enough, what about the 85mm f/2.8?

i use a 50mm for 90% of my portrait work. i use a 28-70 for the other 10% but i just can't get the tack sharp, super clear photos with a non-prime lens.

KarenS
12-13-2005, 08:46 AM
I think there might be a misunderstanding of close here. :)

Do you mean close as in can't zoom in enough? Or close as in if you get close up the lens won't focus?

If you mean the first, then the 85mm would be a better choice. If you mean the second, then the 50mm 1.8 will focus a lot closer than the zoom lens you have.

Karen

I think I mean the second, in that I want to really get up in his face but my lens will not focus.

I second this - it is my absolute favorite lens! Great for portraits:

This is a crop of the original photo, but the lens certainly does allow you to get nice and close.

Edited to change photo to a link - PBASE hasn't been doing well in the linking department lately :(

here's a good example of the clarity you can get with the 50mm. if you're working with a digital SLR, its more like an 80mm.

this is a 100% crop

Hello, I am subscribing. My dad's a photographer and it's always been an interest of mine, though I've never pursued it more than playing around. I have a pretty basic canon digital camera, and on occasion I use my dad's rebel.

Here's a recent picture of a tiger I visited on Saturday (he belongs to a friend of the fam)

Here are some of my lousy attempts to deal with lighting and background...Bella knows that Sunday is laundry day, and it's the only time she's allowed on the pillows, right before I strip the bed and do the wash. :)

A white and brown cat on a white pillow with a brown headboard is seriously challenging. Any tips to improve the clarity? I fiddled with pretty much every setting I had, and these were a few of the better shots (assuming she was still, of course).

Cute kitties! :)

greenbunny it looks to me like your shots may have been underexposed. The thing you have to remember is that your camera meter tries to *average* everything ... so it goes for 18% gray. If you have a lot of white (or light colors like cream) in your image, it's going to underexpose that to make all the white come out averaged. Same with shooting a lot of black - the camera will overexpose to try to get all the black to come out averaged.

If you're shooting in a situation where there's a lot of white, then you should add anywhere from 1/2 to a 1 full stop of exposure to your image. That will help with a lot of the problems.

That's what I have to get into my head. It always looks just right on the screen, and I know it's off, but I hate messing when it looks good there! It's a mental bump I have to overcome.

Plus, then I get nervous that the brown will get too dark. Sometimes when I mess with it to get the whites right, it seems like her eyes disappear into her brown mask.

Thanks! Bella says thank you for the compliment, too.

I have always loved Photography and have taken a couple photography classes over the years. Recently it has become more of a passion than before. I am always taking pictures of random things or thinking "That would be a great picture"......... My wedding photographer actually wants to hire me as an assistant, but we'll see. I don't have a fancy camera, but I would LOVE to get one. I took these with a simple Nikon Coolpix (lol). Any reccomendations for a good starter camera that will still produce good pics? I would love a digital SLR, but I may have to wait on that one.

I know there is a lot of noice and that it's not perfect by any means but I was playing with the settings on my camera the other night before dinner and couldn't get it right. I was getting frustrated so I switched to manual and managed to get this one without any other light than what was on the table and without a tripod. I was quite chuffed with myself. :)

Hi There!

This may have already been asked, but I really don't have the time to look back over some 50+ pages, sorry! :o

I need help finding an online printer that prints postcards without a min purchase. The few I've found require a min purchase of at least 100, and I'm looking for a company that will print a min of 20. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

1-19 ~ $0.99ea ~ $1.29ea
20-49 ~ $0.89ea ~ $1.19ea
50-99 ~ $0.79ea ~ $1.09ea
100+ ~ $0.75ea ~ $0.99ea

Hope that helps a bit:)

I'm very interested in photography so I wanted to subscribe to this thread. There are some GREAT pictures in here and I hope to find some advice and inspiration here.

Right now I'm researching a digital SLR camera. So far I've only used Point & Shoot cameras and they are just not getting the pics I want. My son plays a lot of sports and I love to take action shots. Any advice on a good starter DSLR would be great. I do want it to be a camera that will grow with me and not one that I have to replace in a year because I have surpassed what the camera will do.

TIA!

I haven't read this whole thread, but I have always had a great interest in photography. I know little about how to take good photographs and would like to learn more. I don't have a lot of money to invest in it. It would be more of a hobby than anything else I suppose, but I wouldn't mind taking a course if one was available. For those of you who are "pros" would you mind helping me out and advising me on where I should start? FWIW I live in NC (close to Durham) and the only camera I currently have is a digital (Sony cybershot).

mb1197 There are tons of ways that you can into photography without having to spend a lot of money. I would suggest taking a basic photography class at a local college or community college. That is one of the best ways to get to know your camera and also learn "how to see". Once you have instruction you will learn how to see placement of objects and such.

The following colleges and community colleges in NC offer Photography as a degree (and most offer introductory classes for those that aren't sure they want to make a major out of it):

-Randolph Community College (Asheboro, NC)
-Carteret Community College (Morehead City, NC)
-McDowell Technical Community College (Marion, NC)
-Appalachian State University (Boone, NC)
-Barton College (Wilson, NC)
-Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC)

*I'd also suggest checking out the local community college near you and see if they offer a basic class in photography as an elective.

greenbunny
01-17-2006, 03:37 PM
You might also want to check local camera shops. In my area, a family-owned developing company offers a beginners class for SLR camera users that is 2 three-hour class sessions for $38.

Can I ask why specifically you want to buy them in Vegas? As far as I'm aware, Vegas does'nt have any special stores for backdrops or anything like that - nothing that most large towns/cities don't have. Is there some reason why you wouldn't want to buy them at a local store or from an online retailer?

Karen~Hi Karen, and thank you for responding.
I am looking in Vegas b/c I live in a small city in Alberta, and the closest place I can go is 3 hours.....We are going to Vegas for a vacation and thought if I found something there I could physically see it before purchasing it.....And Iguess I thought that b/c it is a really big city I might have better luck there!
Would you have some online stores that you purchase through? I am just weary with online purchases, I have done a few, but it still worries me unless I know someone who has used the service....
Thanks again!
...and if you do know of any photography stores in Vegas, I would still like to have a little looksy...:) It WILL be my first time there aswell.

Yeah, honestly there aren't many camera stores that I know of in Vegas - unless you can plan to be there between April 7-13 this year when the WPPI convention will be at Ballys/Paris and you can buy admission to the trade show. :)

And even so, most camera stores unless they're REALLY big don't carry a good selection of backgrounds.

I'd recommend the following:
Denny Manufacturing (http://www.dennymfg.com/cgi-bin/Shopper.exe?search=action&keywords=Stone_Wash_Muslins)

I read in the paper today that the the World Press Photo had chosen last year's best photos in Amsterdam. Canadian photographer Finbarr O'Reilly won the premier award with a touching photograph. See this link: http://www.worldpressphoto.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=636&Itemid=50&bandwidth=high

My newspaper showed some of the competing photos on their website. I wish y'all knew Swedish so you could check it out too. There was one that moved me so much. It was from the funeral in Potocari, Bosnia where a whole village were murdered. It is a beautiful photo.

You need to add those pictures to snapfish, or another service, they keep popping up with a window to enter a password to view them.

Go to snapfish, upload them, then click on them and copy the properties.
I'd remove those, you can't see them and they ask for a password on my end.

KarenS

Yep. YOu need to move them to an unprotected area of your server. I keep getting a prompt to log in to your cpanel. That's actually quite dangerous since a hacker could conceiveably guess your password and have access to your whole site.

Wow, you guys take amazing pictures! I'm going to subscribe to the thread.

I've recently started getting more interested in photography, but I'm using a cheapo $200 digital camera (Canon PowerShot A75). I think I'm getting better, but I still have LOTS to learn. I'd love to get a digital SLR and some of the fancy schmancy lenses you girls have been talking about, but I'll have to wait until I have more disposable income. All of these are auto focused. I can't manually focus because up until a few days ago I didn't have glasses, so everything was blurry!

Since I'm still learning, my favorite subjects are things that don't move much! I'm not ever planning on taking pictures professionally, but I would love to try engagement-style portraits for friends of ours or something just to see how I do with people as subjects.

I was messing around w/ over and under exposure some here

My first attempt at the part b&w part color photo taken at my FSIL's wedding. I was snapping pictures as their pro photog was and as I'd finish taking a pic he'd look over and go "yeah, that's a good angle" and shoot from where I just was. Made me feel special.

(This is probably partially due to my laptop monitor too, so if there's too much contrast in some of the pics, that's probably why.) Anyway, if there's something I can do to correct the lact of contrast, let me know.

Please offer suggestions but please be gentle as I have thin skin :p

I have a kinda intimate question for all you photographers. My friend is building her portfolio and I am going to do some nude (read: not porno!!!) shots for her on Sunday morning. We're going to do some in my house and then go to a deserted beach and do some more.

Do you have any tips or suggestions about what to wear, how to prepare, etc? I'm kinda nervous but she has wonderful vision and I feel comfortable with her, so hopefully the shyness won't last the whole time we're shooting. Thanks!

Just an FYI... these are the kinds of shots we're doing:

This one is kind of inspirational, too:

ETA: the links are probably not safe for work....

I would say start the pics with some clothing on then once you're comfortable work your way to no clothing. I've never done any pics like that though behind or in front of the camera, so I'm not really sure how they work. I do like nudes though. Some of those inspiration pics are really cool. I noticed they're all b&w - is that what you plan on doing?

While I haven't photographed any nudes, I did draw them in college. One thing I noticed about all of our models was there self-confidence and level of comfort in their own skin - and that was in front of a bunch of kids in their twenties.

One thing I was told by one of the models we sketched was that she started out doing photography shoots where she would use chiffon (or other sheer material) to act as a filter for the first couple of shots and then as she became more comfortable, she would slowly take away the materials. I saw a gorgeous one of her where she was wrapped in layers upon layers of tulle and you could still see her form underneath. She wasn't nude, but the photographer achieved the right effect. Perhaps you can start off like this and then as the shoot goes on and you become more comfortable, slowly remove the items?

Since the photographer is your friend, I imagine you'll do just fine. Nudes can be absolutely gorgeous when done in the right context. It sounds like they will be.

Good luck!

Ha! I didn't realize they were all b&w! Funny! I imagine we'll do a little bit of both.

I'm planning on putting the pics in a album for my husband. I can't wait to see his reaction!!!

The hardest part will be the confidence thing. I'll definitely try the sheer material first and see how that works.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi. I just found this thread a few days ago, and have been catching up with all the interesting work. I plan on posting some photos soon, and TracieB's question brings up one of my own. But first, and introduction:

DH and I were both design majors in college and did a lot of traditional B&W phototography and printing back then. We are both getting back into photography again as a hobby and have invested in a Nikon D70, an assortment of lenses, and a studio lighting kit. We love digital! I have forgotten a lot of the technical stuff, but am re-learning as I go. I love that some of you participate at photofriday.com. I've been looking for a new "project" to get me out and shooting, and that might just be it.

So my question first- DH and I both shoot nudes, everything from studio art nudes to a more photo-journalist style. Is this a style of photography that people are interested in seeing here, or providing feedback on? I don't know if there are regulations on CC about nudity. Obviously, if people were interested I could post those photos as a link. And of course, if people aren't interested in including nudes in this thread I have plenty of non-nude stuff to share.

TracieB - My suggestions on how to prepare are to wear non-binding clothes like seastars said. Also, you can give you skin a more even look if you really moisturize or use a light skin oil beforehand. Pay attention to how much make-up you use because it can make your face a different color/texture than your body in the photos. If you can, go through some fashion magazines or those photos you posted and practice some of the poses in the mirror before this weekend. There is a big difference between art nude poses and, say, Playboy poses. Know which style your friend wants to shoot. Good models have ideas and will be able to change their poses without the photographer directing every move. I know when I shoot, even with a seasoned model, the first 20 shots or so are throw aways. So just get comfortable with clothes on, and don't worry about those first poses. I find it helps to have music playing, and since it is a friend I'd say go for the glass of wine! Have fun! I think posing nude is very liberating. It sounds like you're going to put together quite a treat for DH.

I don't think this would be a problem as long as the text you hyperlink is pretty clear about what it links to so there's no confusion. I think most people are fine with nudes, but there's always the chance. What does everyone else think?

In the meantime, I'd love to see some other pics. I need inspiration to get outside and take some pictures, but it's been too cold!

I just recently got a nikon digital camera SLR D50 for my birthday and I love it! I have been practicing taking a few shot in and around the house and have been very impressed by how good the camera is. I started with a small olympus but eventually grew out of it.

I also just got a Nikon D50 as an early b-day/anniversary present. I LOVE it. My main reason for wanting a digital SLR was to take action shots of my son playing sports. He has his first baseball tournament this weekend and I'm so excited to take pictures! Photographer, filmmaker Gordon Parks dies (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11717768/?GT1=7850)
Artist chronicled black America for 'Life' magazine, directed movie 'Shaft'

The Associated Press
Updated: 12:02 a.m. ET March 8, 2006

NEW YORK - Gordon Parks, who captured the struggles and triumphs of black America as a photographer for Life magazine and then became Hollywood’s first major black director with “The Learning Tree” and the hit “Shaft,” died Tuesday, his family said. He was 93.

Parks, who also wrote fiction and was an accomplished composer, died at his home in New York, according to a former wife, Genevieve Young, and nephew Charles Parks.

“Nothing came easy,” Parks wrote in his autobiography. “I was just born with a need to explore every tool shop of my mind, and with long searching and hard work. I became devoted to my restlessness.”

He covered everything from fashion to politics to sports during his 20 years at Life, from 1948 to 1968.

But as a photographer, he was perhaps best known for his gritty photo essays on the grinding effects of poverty in the United States and abroad and on the spirit of the civil rights movement.

Rest of story can be found here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11717768/?GT1=7850).

I'm new to this thread...and to Constant Chatter! But, I just bought a Nikon D50 yesterday (my first digital SLR!) and I'm so excited to have come across this thread because I would love to become better at taking pictures!

Some of the photos posted on here are just AMAZING! I am drooling and wish that I could grasp all the technical aspects (like ISO, aperature, and shutter speed) a little quicker.

Right now, I have a 18-70mm lens. Anyone recommend that I upgrade to a 50mm, 1.8? Or is that necessary for someone who is just starting out?

Little Angel: I love that shot of the wine bottle that you took among the glasses. How did you focus solely on the wine bottle and make everything else blurry?

I shot it with a low aperture (fstop) and a 50MM lens.
I believe I tookd it at ISO 400, and F Stop of 1.8. I can't tell you the shutter for the life of me. I can look later.

I was going to come to this thread to post some pictures, but I need help instead!

On Saturday, I photographed a structure fire from about 20 feet. It was incredibly sunny and I used DH's EOS 3 with no flash (don't have one, any recommendations?) and 200 film. Although the pics are in good focus and are composed really well, the majority didn't develop because they were 'underexposed'. I don't understand how they're so dark.

I'm really upset about this, as it was a unique opportunity to take pics and the guys there were really looking forward to the pictures. I may have a second chance in a few weeks and want to get it right. Any suggestions? TIA!

KarenS
04-18-2006, 12:13 PM
can you scan and post some of them? And do you remember the settings on your camera? That would help. I'm kind of puzzled that something shot on a sunny day would be underexposed, but I'm willing to take a look and see if I can figure it out.

Thanks. Sorry for the size, I left them kind of large in case that would give you any clues. ETA - I will resize/delete these after Karen/anyone else looks @ them.

As far as settings, I have no clue, but it says M 640 in the window at the top. This (http://froogle.google.com/froogle_cluster?q=canon+ultrasonic+lens+28-200mm&pid=2099693203736937939&oid=1128897271902495062&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=mrd&hl=en)was the lens I used (obviously not the digital version).

It was very clear/sunny here, and it wasn't as smoky as it looks:

Ok, w/out knowing the settings I can't say for sure, but here's my educated guess. I'm assuming that you were shooting on some mode of automatic, and not manually setting your exposure.

The flames and the sky (pretty impressive flames there, BTW) seem to be well exposed. It seems to me that your camera was overcompensating for the brightness of the flames and the brightness of the sky and therefore anything that was not as bright as the flame was being underexposed.

I'm also thinking that it could be *partially* just bad printing. Where did you get them developed and printed and have you looked at the negatives to see if you can see any detail in the negs?

Karen

Hello Kitty
04-18-2006, 01:24 PM
Thanks. I used auto-focus on the camera, but I'm not sure about the exposure. What would I do to fix that next time (if there is one)? Another thing, is that I was zoomed in the majority of the time - would that have anything to do with it?

I just got them processed at the little general/drugstore here - pics from my point & shoot have turned out fine in the past, so I didn't worry about taking them there. In looking at the negatives, you can see some more details, and the pics that didn't get printed, you can see faint details. Was it anything they did in the developing?

I know this is a matter of opinion, but share your thoughts. I am in the market for a new camera. I currently have a pretty outdated Sony Cyber-shot. I like the ease of use and the size. But have been disappointed by shutter speed and flash (takes forever). I pretty much use it to take pictures of my child (soon to be two kids) – and rarely use it for anything else. I rarely enlarge any pictures that I take, so most cameras would work for my needs. My question: stick with the point and shoot, or go with a digital SLR? I’m interested in learning more about photography. I like the some of the options offered with higher end cameras, i.e. portrait settings etc.

Thoughts?

eta - sorry...I thought I was posting in the "learning photography" thread. I'm posting there too!

Question for all the photographers...

I just got the negatives from our wedding photographer (long story, but she was so disorganized and never got around to getting prints for us so she just sent us the negatives). I want to make prints from them but I have no idea where to start. How do I find a high quality photo lab? I live in Chicago if that helps. Also, she used b/w and color. Most of the negatives look like 35mm negatives (at least they look like negatives I have seen before). They are in strips and she sent thme in negative cover things (plastic protective sheets?). The color film is Kodak 400NC and the B/W film is Kodak T400CN and Delta 3200 Professional.

The others came in a box with individual negatives. They are bigger than the other negatives. The proofs for these negatives are an odd shape (different than the other proofs). The film for these is also Kodak 400NC (at least for the color ones).

As you can tell I have no idea what I'm doing. If possible, can someone point me in the right direction? I would love to get prints made as it has been almost 3 years but I don't want to screw it up or give the negatives to people who may mess them up (if that's possible).

Thanks in advance!

Maya

Maya,

It sounds like you have both 35mm and medium format negatives. The film is pretty standard and any pro lab or good consumer lab can print them (and by "good consumer lab" I don't mean Wolf or Sam's or whatever!).

I'd suggest that you look in your local phone directory under "photo labs" and see what's available in your town. Then call them and ask them what they offer.

However, I will warn you that since the negatives have been cut, it will cost you more to have them all printed, since the whole roll of film can't just be run through the machine. If you need more specific help, please feel free to email me at karen @ ksimmons.com

Karen,
Thank you for your quick response. I just got off the phone with Gamma Lab in Chicago. You are correct, the cut medium format negatives are quite expensive to print:
5 x 7 $21.75
8 x 10 $25.50

He said that if the 35 mm negatives are in strips (they are, about 4 to a strip) than they can do automatic processing. Those prices seem quite reasonable:

3.5 x 5 $.75
4 x 6 $.95
5 x 7 $4.25
8 x 10 $7.25

Does that seem reasonable to you?

Maya,

Well. Huh. The medium format print price seems extremely high. The prices on the 35mm seem much more in line with what I would have expected.

However, Gamma is an excellent lab - I've heard of them, though never used them myself. They have a great reputation.

I don't know how you'd feel about shipping your medium format negs, but I would be happy to check with my film lab and see what they'd charge for basic proof prints for you. I think I can get you a much better price on both proofs and on final prints.

A suggestion for you - try to avoid the middle of the picture. :)

In other words, all of your images are nicely exposed, but everything is in the middle. The horizon is in the middle in the first photo. In the next three the subjects are in the middle. In the last one the door is in the middle.

As you're composing your photos, think about what's called the Rule of Thirds. That is: draw an imaginary tic-tac-toe grid over your photo and try to place main points where the grid comes together.

Unfortunately I'm not home or I'd post something ... I'll try to get something uploaded tonight.

Using the rule of thirds gives you a more dynamic image and makes for an interesting composition that draws the viewers eye more into the photo.

since the amount of and type of light is probably one of the single most important factors in photography, that's a pretty big question. :)

when shooting portraits, i aim for first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon (i did a 6pm session last night and the light was soft and sweet and beautiful). on clear days (and when you can't avoid shooting in the middle of the day), open shade is great. the sky acts as one huge reflector and projects a soft light onto the subjects and will give you great catchlights.

http://www.christineplamann.com/clientproofs/bernsteinparty/images/bernsteinparty96.jpg

i took this in open shade at noon. see how in her eyes, you can see the sky reflected? the shade prevented shadows and squinting, while the sky behind me reflected light onto her face.

Hi guys. What a great thread! Amazing pictures! Definitely an inspiration.

I have a question about digital manipulation of photos.

I'm currently trying to sort through our travel pictures (all taken with a digital camera) to decide which ones to print and frame. I've just learned the basics of playing around with photoshop. I was amazed at how such basic functions, like Auto Levels and Auto Contrast, can change a picture. I thought some of our pics were terrific as they were, then was surprised at how much better the automatic adjustments made them (and I haven't even begun to learn about all the custom adjustments you can do). Not all of the pics were improved by the automatic adjustments, but more than half look better now than they did before.

So my question is ... how much editing do you do in photoshop? Do you think it really enhances your pictures? Does it feel like "cheating"? Are there any negative side effects I should be aware of (e.g. do some of the photoshop manipulations look fine on screen but bad when blown up and printed)? What photoshop functions do you use/like the most?

I hope this isn't a repeat question ... I've only skimmed through this thread so far, but plan to go back and read every post. I'll try to post some pics in here soon.

i run every client photo through photoshop to crop (my camera takes photos in 4x6 and i proof in 5x7), sharpen and convert.

for photos that i'm showing in black and white, i run a quick conversion action. for photos that i'm showing in color, i do a quick contrast/sharpen action.

if you exposure accurately in the first place, you won't need to do any levels and curves adjustments. not that there's anything wrong with doing that, but i do think that photoshop has made a lot of photographers lazy because it's so easy for us to "fix" the technical errors that we make when we originally take the shot.

finally broke out my new nikon d70 to give it a try. however, i found that many of my pictures that i just took came out with a blueish tint while others look great. these were all taken under the same lighting conditions (natural light through a window coming in from the left) and the same location/ time with similar settings. i can't figure out why many came out blueish. also, the blueish ones are not all with the same settings, they vary. here are a couple along with the settings. any ideas? (also the only editing i did was to pump up the brightness on the blueish one to see if that would help. didn't really do much) thanks!

Natural light - sunlight and outdoor light is naturally a cool light, so it will be bluish. If your exposure changes, then the blue cast may become more noticeable. It will also be more noticeable if the image is slightly underexposed.

My experience with most digital cameras is that you really need to set your camera to overexpose about 1/3 to 1/2 stop at all times.

Also if you custom white balance (check your manual - each camera does it differently) then you'll eliminate that blue (or orange or green or whatever) cast to the photos.

I am so glad to hear (hmm...is 'hear' really the right word? ;) ) you say that. I thought I was crazy or that something was wrong with my individual camera. I typically have to overexpose a tad from what the meter tells me. I'm such an amateur - I thought sure I just wasn't getting it.

KarenS

I'm such an amateur - I thought sure I just wasn't getting it.Nah - it's not you at all. I keep my camera set to +1/3 stop or more unless I'm photographing something really dark.

Here's the thing (and if you know this already, feel free to skip it :)): Your camera meter averages exposures and tries to expose for a mid range. Meaning it tries to make everything middle gray (technically 18% gray). So if you meter something that's mostly white or light, it will underexpose it - trying to make it gray. If you meter something that's mostly black or dark, it will over expose it - trying ot make it gray. Most of what you photograph (unless you're a wedding photographer photographing a bunch of guys in black tuxes) is going to be more *light* than dark. So most of the time your meter will underexpose. Make sense?

The truth of the matter is that cameras have always done this. The difference is when you take film to the lab, they fix all of that for you and all you see are the fixed prints. Now that people are shooting digital, they're having to FIX those things themselves instead of just letting the lab do it.

Same with light temperatures. Before your lab would automatically correct for daylight, tungsten light, flourescent light, etc. Now, you see all of that before it's been corrected.

Even though digital is a lot easier and less expensive than film in a lot of ways, it actually makes taking good photos a lot harder because it removes the middle man who fixed the mistakes before you ever saw them.

It does make perfect sense explained that way. I've had 2 professors try to exlpain the concept and I've read about it in my books, but they all tried to get too technical for me. (I also think it was a difference in communication styles between male and female.) Your explanation gives me the real world context that my brain can latch on to. Thanks!!

I didn't know Maureen was even here haha. I came over because Shonna told me about it. :)

Camera equipment is like tattoos, those who get them can't just stop at one. ;) I, unfortunately have the double bug, I get tattoos and camera equipment.

I have a Canon 10D camera. I had a couple of good lenses, but there were some issues with them, one I cannot use because for some odd reason it's not compatible with the 10D...go figure, so I spent thousands on this lens and I can only use it on the old camera that is now broken. Then, I had a 14mm very wide angle lens that I am waiting on a couple to pay me for because their son broke it while at a wedding. I was holding my camera at my side leaning on the wall and this kid decided to squeeze between me and the wall and pushed my camera straight into the wall cracking my lens. (Brand new $2k lens I might add)

Technically one would call me a "professional" However, I do not refer to myself as that. I am a photograher, that's it. I am always evolving always changing and growing to become a better photographer. Many times I am finding new techniques and going out on a 'training shoot' just like I used to when I was a photography student. Testing my settings and what not.

I just absolutely adore photography. I am more of a people shooter than anything else, but I do love abstract photography. I will see some seriously random stuff and just start taking pictures of it and hang it on my walls.

One more question? Can you recommend a good website or even a book to help me understand manual flash settings? I took a photo lighting class last semester and still just don't get it. I'm so confused about how to calculate flash power, program the flash, etc. The manual that came with my flash is sketchy at best. 2 whole pages of instruction, and most of that deals with the battery installation, etc. :o

TIA!

KarenS
07-26-2006, 10:24 PM
Hm. I'll be honest - flash is the hardest thing for me. Even after 15 years in the biz, I still have to *think* about it when I use it, vs. just putting myself on autopilot. :)

One of the things that will help once you get it fixed in your brain is that the normal rules of exposure are a little different. Once you put flash on your camera, the shutter controls the ambient (surrounding, non flash) light exposure, and the aperture (f-stop) controls the amount of light from the flash. Always. That always holds true. So when you're setting your exposure, the normal ratio of shutter speed to f-stop doesn't exist like it does with only ambient light.

I always have to stop and *remember* that when I use my flash. It takes a minute for it to click in. :)

I'm not really sure about good current books, but I"ll ask on my board and see if anyone has any suggestions. Let me see what I can come up with.

Once you put flash on your camera, the shutter controls the ambient (surrounding, non flash) light exposure, and the aperture (f-stop) controls the amount of light from the flash.

Karen

See, that's something I had no idea about. I'm glad to know that it's not just some simple concept that I'm failing to grasp. I get so frustrated when I miss a what could have been an awesome shot because I can't figure the flash out!

Thanks for your help - I'm grateful for whatever you can find!

Karen

I think I am more of a technical person and need hands on.
Thinking about it confuses the heck out of me.

The best other example of flash that I heard was that to get a great ambient light image WITH flash, and not make it look over powered, is to turn your flash down -1/2 and your exposure up +1/2, and you will get the closet thing to ambient light in the image without it looking flashy. depends on the scene, but I have good luck with it.

Hi Girls

I'm taking pictures of my pregnant friend on the beach this Saturday and I want to try to take advantage of the Morning light. I'm trying to settle on a time with her but not quite sure what time would provide the most optimal lighting.

I thought I remember someone telling me during the 1st 2 hrs after sunrise.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Just a quick reminder to let you know that you still have time to participate in this month's 26 Things photo scavenger hunt (http://www.chatterblogging.com/2006/08/06/26-things/). Some of the words are proving to be a tad difficult and I know I'm having some challenges with some of the pictures. But don't let something like that hold you back. Just post what you can. And don't worry about using simple images or just a basic point and click, it's not a photography contest, it's just something fun.

Can't wait to see you what you guys have come up with!

This is on manual and my first time shooting on manual at night, so it's not crystal clear, nor by any means a good picture. :p

I haven't perused this whole thread yet, but I would love to join your ranks one day! After 2 years of messing with a point and shoot digital and messing up so many of what I thought should have been good shots, I finally got a good camera.

I purchased an Olympus Evolt E-300 froma co-worker who is a professional photographer on the side. He promised to teach me the ins and outs of the camera, but I realized I have tons to learn!

Any advice on where to start? Do basic photography classes apply to digital cameras, or would a book be better?

Also, I already have some great shots and am looking for a place that prints them well. I sent my last batch to Walgreens and was disappointed in the quality of the print. Do I need to go to professional places to get a good print?

Fellow Canon Rebel owners (or Nikon-comparatives)....

I have an 18-55, and a 50 1.8 (was too cheap to splurge on the 1.4).....with a birthday coming up next week, I want to add another lens to the repertoire. Something not TOO insanely expensive - I would prefer to keep it to 500 or less. I shoot a variety of things - I'm a mother of three, so lots of kids' soccer games, baby girl learning to walk, etc. I would like something that isn't a fixed lens this time (I love my 1.8, but with a toddler on the move, I think I need a little more flexibility in the hand rather than the feet!), but other than that, I'm sort of stumped for what would be the most useful to me at this time, AND I have absolutely zero time to research (see above, where I mention that I'm a mother of three).

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated! :)

Snow, my input would be that with the 50 and 18-55, you're pretty well covered on the close-range side. If you're shooting soccer games and more outdoor activities, it might be handy to get a little more zoom power in your camera bag for those moments where you find yourself 30 feet or more from your subject and still want a great close-up.

If you're comfortable with going into the f3.5-5.6 range for long-range outdoor shooting, you can come away with a Canon 28-200 zoom (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=206435&is=USA&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation) in the $350 ballpark. Tamron can bump you into the 300mm range in roughly the same price range (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=347531&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation).

I mostly shoot concerts, both club and arena, and my core lenses are a Tamron 17-55 2.8 and a Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 80-200mm 2.8.

Hope that shout from the peanut gallery helps.

-Richard

Thanks for popping in, Richard! My 18-55 is a piece of crap - I seriously hate that thing, and will probably rarely use it once I have better lenses in my case. (It was the standard kit lens.)

Katy, I've been playing around with LIghtroom and for the most part, I like it, although I'm not sure that it has anything more/better to offer than PS CS2's raw converter combined with Bridge.

Then again, I'm right in the middle of my super busy season so I won't have time to REALLY look at it until January.

Katy
10-29-2006, 11:13 AM
DJ, I think it suppossed to make things easier in that PS CS2 has a lot of stuff for graphics people as well as photographers, and it has a built in Bridge, like you said. So they'd basically be thinning out the options so to speak. I'm a bit overwhelmed (to say the least) by PS CS2, so that's why I have a feeling that I'll like Lightroom better.

those are nice captures. what sort of editing did you do?

the second one looks a little flat - how did you convert to b&w? i have some actions that i'd be happy to share with you if you'd like. also, have you tried tilting it 2-3 degrees counter-clockwise?

for color shots, i run my own little action which boosts contrast by 10 and runs unsharp mask at 100/2/5 but it only works on hi-res images.

DJ, I have no clue what I did, I just tweaked things. With the black and white I just did a simple conversion, no fancy editing. I'd love a list of actions to use - easier to follow a list than to make it up as I go along.

I haven't had much time to play with Photoshop, but I was wondering if there is a way to process multiple RAW images?? I usually bump up the contrast myself, and I just don't have time to do it for every image (though I would like to!)

Use Bridge.
You can edit 1000 images pretty quick. You can select in batches.
Adjust contrast, saturation and shadows pretty quick and then after you've adjusted exposure, go into PS and add effects and tweak.

I LOVE BRIDGE :)

Well, you'd go about looking for a photographer just as you would for a wedding. Most photographers that own their own business photograph weddings, families, children, ect.. Sure, you might find a few that ONLY do weddings or ONLY do portraits but for the most part they do a little bit of everything. You can ask around in your area to see who others use. Also, jumping on The Knot.com for your local area and make a post looking for a photographer.

For what you are asking, you're going to want someone that has a more photojournalistic style and outside instead of in a studio.
