Yes, I do use Photoshop. I do an "auto fix" and I'm sure it improves the contrast a bit, but I didn't manually do anything to these pictures.

Hey Girls,
Just got back from my cousin's wedding in the Dominican Republic. She had a photographer included in the package, but the exposures were very limited. Thought I'd share here. Talk about TOUGH weather conditions!
Some of them continue on the second page:

From a wedding I did July 9th.... http://www.cordelephotography.com/weddings/image9.jpg The bride is a Fan of the Red Sox and got married at Fenway Park.
We were walking the street to get to the park. I thought this was cool.

I took this for a friend who is a book artist. She made both for me and asked me to take a few shots for them now that she is setting up a website. The books are so beautiful. The first one is a journal and the second one tells the story of our visit with her and her husband in 2003. It is filled with photos that my husband and I took while there.

The histogram is really easy to understand. To make sure you image isn't OVER exposed you should have a smide of the histogram in the first part of the box over to the left. It doesn't need to fill it in. To make sure your image isn't underexposed you need to have some of the histogram in the 5th box (or the last one.) and again it doesn't need to fill it. You also should have any spikes through out it, it should be like a mountain range, or a hill going up and coming back down. For more inforamtion look here:

Anyone take any great photos lately?
I've been feeling uninspired, I admit. I was checking out the submissions for this week's Photo Friday contest and the fact that nearly everyone posted a picture of a hyacinth, iris, or some other purple flower really bugged me. And then I did it myself and I was sort of upset with myself that I couldn't find anything else "violet" to photograph.

Becky, do you find it stressful to participate in Photo Friday, having to meet a set deadline and follow a certain theme? I used to participate in Photochallenge over at LJ, but felt I never had enough time to get a really good shot (or idea) in time for the deadline. Still, I like the idea of challenging yourself to become a better photographer, and wish I had more time.

How about a QOTD?
How does Photography play into your life? Hobby, passion, profession, interest, etc?
**Photography pretty much consumes my life. I am a photography major finishing my last two semesters. When I come out I'll have a degree in Photographic Technology. I have always really been into film and I think I'm literally the last person on earth who enjoys printing in the black and white darkroom....lol. I have never gotten into digital until recently. At the end of every semester we have a final portfolio to do and this past semsester we had the option to choose doing it with film and printing traditionally (which is what we normally do) or all digital (which some do). I decided to do mine digital and ever since then I've been hooked. I guess I've just been a little old school for a while. I am actually really excited because I've turned the 3rd bedroom in my house into my new home office so I don't have to go up to the campus to work on my photography. I just ordered a brand new Apple Power Book (laptop) as well as the new Canon 20D and I am so excited for them to come in. Classes start up again for me tomorrow and I am so excited to get this degree finished.

Hey there sourgrapes. I think these are really cute. The last two have a "grainy" look. I don't know if that's intentional or not. I love her facial expressions in 1 and 2. Those are my favorite. I wonder how they would look if you gave her a punch of color or "glow".

This was done by adding a duplicate layer with a "soft light" blending mode. Great pics.

I have no idea where to post this anymore but does anyone have good rec's on printing photonote cards. I am a web designer who is clueless when it comes to printing. I am looking for a vendor who will take my file and print on blank note cards so no template or cookie cutter design. I also want to know what dimensions my file should be so that fonts, crop marks etc are set properly. I am trying to design thank you cards and baptism invites and I want to make up for the fact that I did not design my wedding invites which I truly regret!
PS- I know there are places like Kinko's but I have zero time to run around so I am looking for websites that might have an online proofing system.
Thanks in advance!

I saw a great shot on my way home from work Friday. On the old bridge about a half mile from my house, there were four white pigeons sitting in a row, but nose to tail, back and forth. They didn't look wild, they looked like pets. Of course I didn't have my camera, and there was nowhere safe to park anyway to get the shot. I hate when that happens!

i haven't been over here in a while...I've been crazy busy with school and my portfolio's. I am very happy that I only have 4 classes left until graduation and I will be all finished with my degree in Photography. I am loving my new digital camera. I've always been a Nikon girl but just recently bought the new Canon 20D and I LOVE IT! I have also been mostly using the 75 -300mm lens and I am in *love*...lol.
I just thought I'd drop off a few pictures I've been working on recently. **None of these have been edited in photoshop yet...they were straight from my camera.

I get mine done at a local family-owned shop, Dan's. They do an amazing job with everything and are really conscientious about their work. They just won some award, Photo Finishers of the Year, but I don't know much about that sort of thing. They also offer online services and I think it's only a buck to mail them to your house. Gah. Made an error. Didn't realize there'd been a change in printing in the years since I used (happily, mind you) Target's photo processing, and gave them a roll of film. Bleah. Seems nowadays they make the negatives, scan it in, then treat everything like it's digital. So you lose bits of your photos, like you do with digital, and that's NOT what I wanted. Realized it too late.
Oh well, I was told by a good film place (an hour away and expensive, which is why I didn't take it up there...think I will be for the future, expensive be damned) that negatives are *pretty much* negatives, and better prints can be made.
Oh and don't get me started on how difficult Target's photo CD is to deal with! No real instructions or overview, just a huge pain in the rear.
Then I took four digital pictures that I've had printed in various places and laid them all out, and damnitall if shutterfly's prints didn't turn out the best. The colors were closest to reality, it's a nice-feeling print, etc. Crazy!
Besides mpix and danscamera, does anyone else have a favorite for film and/or digital?

So you lose bits of your photos, like you do with digital,
I don't mean to be disagreeable, but this statement is quite simply not true. You do not "lose bits of your photos" with digital. If your negatives are scanned and the images are coming out bad, then that's because of the quality of the scan, not an inherent problem with digital.

Every digital service I've looked at and used takes part of the image. Some of the services allow you to crop it so that it fits the 4x6 print, others don't, but all that I've seen (and the target/yahoo service states it right up front as you're ordering) takes off part of the image to get it into the 4x6 space.

The cropping of a digital image actually has to do with the image ratio your camrea takes. In most good quality digital cameras these days, you can change the ratio so that a 4x6 photo won't get cropped when processed for printing (There should be a 3:2 setting in your photo quality menu.) As far as a photo negative being cropped, that seems rather unusual to me considering the ratio should match, but maybe someone who is more well versed in photography could answer that question.
KarenS
10-03-2005, 01:01 PM
What Beth said is spot on. There's a huge difference between cropping and "losing" parts of an image due to digital. When you say you're "losing parts of the image" you're saying that data is being lost in the scanning process, which causes degradation of the image. Cropping issues are a whole 'nother ball of wax.
Also, if the lab is scanning 35mm film, then it shouldn't matter if it's a digital scan or not. The ratio of the image is the ratio of the image and will translate to the right sized print. If something is being cropped, it's a lab issue, not a digital issue.

Aha. I have an ancient Fuji digital. :)
All I know is that the digital version on my screen has a certain amount of Eamon's head, but the prints have cut the top of it off and have a whole lot more dark space to the right, and have cut off his nose on the left (which was pretty close to the side of the picture).
All in all, I don't really want professional advice here, since they would be using a far higher level of processing. I just want prints of my film for albums and the occasional scrapbooking, and I don't want them to be crap. :) I'm willing to spend *some* money but not a zillion dollars. I think it gets confusing b/c I want advice on both film processing AND digital prints. More than one company is fine...but I'm now on 16 months without printing more than "practice/comparison" prints, and I have 10 rolls of film only one of which is marked as to what it was...the situation is getting desperate! :D
I also don't like sending my film by mail anywhere...and I want a place that processes it right there in the building. Oh why oh why did my lovely little photo lab close? *sob*

Oh yeah, I just noticed that they mention Walgreens. I use snapfish for my online posting (except for a couple shutterflys I just did last night) 'round here, and I've previously used them for film, but their prints are just so flimsy.
I think I'll have to do some winkflash and some mpix practice runs. I was also looking last night at Ritz/Kits camera (for both digi and film), and I was impressed talking with the Tall's Camera guys a few months back (their place smells like a proper photo lab LOL).
All this talk is moot for now, though. One roll a month is what we're doing. :) I'm still not sure when I'll be able to do all the digital...ugh!

I actually do have a question further to my other. :)
When taken to a photo lab (one that stinks like chemicals like my old one LOL), the negative is created (in some mysterious process) then the film is processed...when I picture a darkroom, similar to the xray darkroom at my chiropractic college, I picture trays of chemicals as the negative is somehow "transferred" (not the right word at all) onto photo paper. It seems like magic.
Whereas with a digital print, it's pretty much just being printed, like with a printer at home, only more high-tech?
Or am I completely off-base (if so be nice please)?
Does someone who perhaps used to have a low-tech darkroom have info on this?
Part of this is curiosity, the other park is trying to figure out why my prints from the film did such a bad job with skintone (yet did such a GREAT job with the colors from the Tulip Festival). The only thing I can imagine is that it's just printing it out and is having to do with the limitations of color variations from whatever computer they started with. Obviously I should just bop up to a stinky photo lab (I definitely have a bias towards smelly labs, don't I...maybe that's why my photo place closed, maybe all their employees filed disability from toxic chemical exposure?) and do a comparison, but that's just not going to happen just yet. :D
KarenS
10-03-2005, 06:33 PM
Here's the scoop.
At the present time whether you're printing a digital print or a film print, the *print* is made the same way. The image is transferred from the digital file or the negative to the paper and the paper is then put thru a series of chemical baths (developer, stop, fix, wash) to create the print. It's still a chemical process.
The difference is in how the image is transferred to the paper - either via a light source shining through the negative onto the paper or through a laser transfer of the digital image to the paper. But the *print* that results is still a photographic print, made in a photographic developing process.
the other park is trying to figure out why my prints from the film did such a bad job with skintone (yet did such a GREAT job with the colors from the Tulip Festival). There are multiple answers to this. One is that it's highly dependent on the film you were using. Most consumer films are designed to make colors *pop* because that's what most consumers want ... bright, vibrant colors. Photographers who photograph people will choose a film that is designed to give more accurate skin tones vs. strong color. The other is that consumer labs, like consumer films, are more geared towards giving the average consumer the vibrant color, rather than the smooth creamy skin tones. So when you use a film designed for consumers and a lab designed for consumers, the probability is very strong that they are specifically structured to create final prints that *pop* with color and they let the skin tones fall where they may. That's the difference between a consumer lab and a professional lab. A professional lab that specializes in people photography will not only encourage you to use the right film for the job, but their equipment is calibrated to make the most of skin tones and let the rest of the colors fall where they may.
Hope that helps.

I've quit using Snapfish all together. The last set of photos I ordered (for my own personal albums) came back grainy and pixelated. I checked to make sure I hadn't uploaded the low quality ones from our website and nope; they were the high quality version and should have produced very clear, vivid images. Instead, it looks like I took a wallet size and tried to enlarge it. All in all, very disappointed. When I called to complain, they offered to redo my prints, but I didn't want another set of flimsy photos, I wanted my money back so I could order elsewhere.

Why thank ya. She's seen them and loves them. She's a very good friend of mine (was in the delivery room when they cut out her youngest), and I've been telling her i want to do shots. I did her re-wedding and we loved those. When her hubby gets back from Iraq I'm gonna do more family shots for them. I'll probably steal her daughter (who seems to be more willing) and do a hole bunch of her. I just love this stuff.

which 300mm lens do you have? it's interesting that you use that lens on a 20D (with the 1.6 crop facter) in a studio for portrait - must be a hugh studio
I have the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens. I really like it. I mostly use it outside and on location but I used it in the studio for some really great tight head shots. Yes, the studio is HUGE. It's a commercial sized studio w/ the 'garage doors' to the outside so you can drive in cars, ect...

Poopsie - Are you adding the Gausean Blur (I think that's what it's called) to the pics in a photo editing program or are you just taking them and they come out that way (or at least doing something to make them have the nice blur to them)? TIA!

shhhhh i just use whatever shutterfly has, don't tell. hahaha. really though when i upload them to shutterfly they have that softening feature in the same spot where you can make it black and white or sepia.

I'm playing around lately with my camera. I LOVE photography, but I never had time before to really play with it before, thanks to school!
I just wanted to have opinions on my first catchlight pic:

I'd love to have comments so that I can improve my photography technique.

It's a bug the blur in the back ground just comes out that way. I thought you were referring to the softness. Whatever setting i have it on is causing that, I kinda think it's cool, but I wish that I knew what was setting it.
KarenS

An out of focus background is caused by shallow depth of field. The wider your aperture (the lens opening) the shallower the depth of field. An image shot at f2, for example, will have a much blurrier background than an image shot at f8.

Can you offer some tips? I think maybe I shot into the sun instead of concentrating on the shadows on the ground.I think some of it has to do with the lighting and time of day you're shooting. I've heard that it's best to shoot in the early morning and mid-to-late afternoon if you want to get those kind of plays on shadow and light.

Thank you Becky! :)
Greenbunny, what I did was look for the spot where the light shone through the trees the most and then placed myself where I thought the camera could capture what I saw with my eyes the most. I tried to capture the rays rather than the sun or the shadows. That's my only tip. But what I can say is that we were in a ravine and it was very moist and foggy there. Perhaps that helped too, I don't know? But thank you anyway.
greenbunny
10-13-2005, 01:36 PM
I bet moist air would help with showing the rays better...that makes sense.
Thanks! At least now I can partially blame it on the environment and not myself.
I'm motivated to get out on the App trail this weekend and take some pictures. It's pouring right now, so if it clears up a bit I might have that moist air to help me.
This is a weird question, but does anybody know if swans migrate for the winter? There's a farm near here with three swans in their pond, and I kept meaning to stop and shoot some pictures, but lately they haven't been around.

Karen- Do you have two camera bags? I can't seem to find a bag that's big enough for my gear but small enough that I don't feel like I'm lugging a suitcase everywhere I go, so I bought a second, smaller bag that carries one body, two lenses, flash & meter. It's a pain to switch back and forth but I love being able to carry my camera with me without lugging the whole shebang.

Here's what I use: Lowepro Pro Roller 1 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=149687&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)
It is big enough to hold 2 bodies, 2 flashes, all my lenses, extra batteries. I also carry a waistpack that holds cards, a lens, etc.
However, I'm also looking into a backpack for variety. I have a friend who uses one and I like it a lot. I am just build differently than she is, so I need to try a couple of different styles to see what would work with me.

I was playing around earlier today with my p&s, trying to take a self-portrait to show off my new hair color and 'do for some friends, when apparently, I only took a photo of my eyeball. I always see these self-portraits that are very abstract and only capture one area of a person's body and now I'm just convinced it's because they messed up. =)

Those are nice Manteo. The only thing I would say is that some of them seem a bit to posed. My personal preference is to see portraits that are more fluid and where it seems like you just captured a subject doing something, as opposed to waiting while they positioned their body, if that makes sense. I really like the one of her sitting on the fence, hugging her knees.

She absolutely hated getting in that cake. and she slipped and slidded until she got to her momma. Momma was sitting there and I saw the foot and cake and was like "get the pic now stace" hahaha. It's one of my favorites also. She does have the biggest eyes. She's super sweet.

I shot DH's cousin's senior pics yesterday what do ya think? My first inclination is to say they look kind of posey. The first could have been really great if it was a shot of her just walking along the tracks instead of squatting in the middle of them. Also, I would rely less on the frame features in Shutterfly and go with a regular black border or none at all. I tend to not be a fan of the faded borders as it looks dated. Minus the border, the second one is really nice and captures her facial features quite well.
snowzilla
10-31-2005, 11:05 AM
The diminishing perspective of the train tracks in the first shot is nice, but her white hat disappears into the sky above her head. A darker hat would have been better, I think.
Like the second shot - very pretty smile!
In the fourth shot, it looks as though she is amputated at the knees. It took me a moment to figure out whether she was kneeling, or standing in really tall grass. Either way, she looks cut off at the knees.
I'd have to agree with HB about the frame features in Shutterfly. I'd be more concerned with a really good picture and I feel like the frame feature takes away from that.
I'd say the second picture is definitely my favourite.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought I had read in an earlier post that you were using effects through Shutterfly to alter your images, and incorrectly assumed you were doing that here as well. :) Regardless, I think I'd skip the fancy effects and let the photo speak for itself - I did feel like a couple of the photos looked "dated" simply due to the frame effect. But it's all personal opinion! :)

I have to say honestly that I'm really not fond of the funky colors and overprocessing. Most pro photographers I know (and I don't mean this to insult anyone ... so please don't take it that way ... this is just a reflection of what most photographers feel) is that all the funky photoshop effects and stuff are mostly used to hide technically bad photography. While I don't necessarily agree with that all the time, I do think it happens more often than not and so I'm more inclined to like a straight photograph - or one with little maniupulation, over one with funky color or effects.

mrsdrummer~I just wanted to chime in too:)
For the Senior portraits, I too like the 1st 2 the best, the last ones look overposed and awkward. I LOVE walking pics too, and think the 1st one could have been better if it was more relaxed with her walking the tracks.
And as for the band pics, I think the funky colors works here b/c it IS a band:) They look fun! I like 1 and 3 best!
So this is your DH's band? Neat! My DH has a studio, but is more into production than actually playing himself. He does play the bass tho!
Seems like you have a lot of photo opportunities:D I LOVE looking at your pics!

since it was in a bar with crappy lighting and being such an amatuer i thought I'd thow those funky colors on there, normally i don't do anything more drastic than sepia it's just not my style. But these are some cool guys with funky personalities, so i just thought it was fun.
Sunshine my husband is in the last one, the other two guys are lead singers for other bands. I just showed my DH and he loved them. Musicians, especially rock musicians, are wierd. That's not meant to down anyone they'll tell you that themselves, so the fact that he loves loves loves these pictures was a real boost to my ego. :)

yup, I agree with deliciousjones and sunshine the color effects are muy appropriate.
I personally hate senior photos --- I had to take them 4 times because I broke the camera 3 times!!! - but it clearly comes across that 1) the subject was comfortable with you, and 2) that they're posed. I disagree with the ladies that say it's inappropriate to look posey. Sometimes, it is. BUUUUT number 2 is the most spontaneous and the best overall!

I'm going to agree with Karen and this is just my personal opinion. Photoshop can do wonders to enhance pictures and save pictures, but I'm not a fan of over-processing and I think it's abused a little too often. I do like the first picture, however, his blue skin on the second doesn't quite look right to me. Again, just my own personal thoughts here...thanks for sharing.

KarenI agree with this as well. So often I'll see an image that I think could have been so classic in black & white and it will be over processed to hell and I'll think to myself that the photographer is probably masking some flaws with the photo.
Years ago when we were looking for a wedding photographer I came across one who seemed to have a good eye for capturing all of the moments I think wedding photography should, but every photo had a severe blue, green, or yellow undertone and I couldn't help but feel that she was trying to cover something up.
Personally for photos of friends and family (none that I would ever charge for) if I can't save a photograph I'll use extreme contrast and pretend I meant for it to look like that b/c I was trying to be artsy. =)

I need some help. I recently started doing freelance writing for a newspaper here and they also require photos. I have a Sony HSC 5.1MP camera. I shot some events this weekend and submitted my photos, however, my supervisor told me to take lighter photos next time. He said that newspaper print usually prints dark.
So, how do I make it lighter? I'm so lost... I just shot with no flash, outside (with a lens dome because it was really sunny) and inside.
Here are some examples:
I know this isn't the greatest, and it's not one I submitted, but I deleted the rest from my computer and this one managed to slip by!

The type I'm most curious about are the outdoor shots. Should I just not use the dome again and it will be fine? I really want to stay away from using the flash. Any tips would be appreciated!

I wonder if you can adjust your exposure setting in your camera?
I would over expose it for him by one stop, and see what happens.
If you don't have a camera that has manual settings, to do what he is asking, you need to rent a SLR camera.
Or you can go on EBAY? There are some cheaper end digital SLRs out there.

Yes, you'll need to learn to adjust your exposure. It looks to me like the first one is ok, but the next two are about 1/2 stop under exposed. You'll need to remember when you're shooting a dark subject, that your camera is going to try to make everything middle-gray (cameras meter for an average) and so you'll need to adjust your exposure by 1/2 to 1 stop. Your manual should tell you how to do this. Also if you're looking at selling a lot of photos, I'd recommend you pick up the book "Understanding Exposure" by Moose Peterson - it'll really help you to understand the basics and get why your camera is doing what it's doing.

I haven't had a chance yet to really read all of the posts on here (so many!) but the photos I've seen on here so far are fantastic.
I'm by no means a photographer of any sort (yet) and just have a Kodak digital point and shoot camera. I love photography and have been thinking about purchasing my first digital SLR and taking some classes offered though my local community parks and rec program as a start.
I'd love to hear what you would recommend as a good starter digital SLR camera. Also if there are any good books out there that I should be reading to learn.
In any case, here are a couple of photos that I recently took of my cat. These haven't been edited at all, but I'd be interested in any feedback you might have.

I use GIMP. It's a powerful tool and I love it. It can be a bit confusing to use, though. There aren't any "quick fix" buttons for things like color correction or red eye reduction like some of the photo programs have. Plus, there aren't any (that I've found) instruction books about the program, so most of what you learn has to come from either trying to apply a Photoshop book to GIMP or trial and error. I guess I'd recommend GIMP if you want to do more than just make a photo black and white and are willing to take the time to learn. Otherwise, you might be better off with a different program.

I also cant see your pics Dens_Cinderella...I am pretty sure it is b/c you have your photos in kodak gallery, I dont htink this site supports the kodak gallery. (Try shutterfly.com or snapfish.com or photobucket.com just to name a few)
ANyhow, I was still able to view your photos the hard way and I had to say I Like the 3rd one the best:) (What is the last picture? I can't figure it out...)

Just out of curiousity...why can I see them?
I'll look around at different hosts.

Many sites don't allow passive hotlinking to other sites. You can see them because it's your account and the images are already cached in your computer. The rest of us have to copy the URL of the image and paste it into a new browser window to bypass the kodak hot-linking restrictions.

Hey Clammy! I had no idea you enjoyed photography! Nice to see you around! When I first purchased my Canon 20D, I tried to read through that darn manual, but I got lost (and bored). I purchased an instructional DVD which helped out a lot. Here's one for your camera by the same maker:

It's not the feel good movie of the year, but it helps out a lot, especially if you're a visual person. Good luck hun!

I try to catch them in whatever they are doing instead of having them pose for me. I don't feel confident enough to be able to demand posing yet. So mostly I just get down on the floor while they play or whatever and click away. Usually they need some time to get used to me doing that before they relax and ignore me (and stop making faces at the camera). Some of my favourites of children are non posed ones. Here are a few:

Here are a few ones that are more posed. The kids are adorable but I don't like these photos as much.

Lindsan - how are you converting your b&w images? They look very low contrast to me, even on my laptop monitor, which should be much better.

Hey Lindsan, it looks like you're converting to greyscale which doesn't give the photos much oomph. What editing application are you using? Maybe we can help you with your conversions!

i photograph a lot of children and what i have found works best is to spend some time letting them get comfortable with me and my camera, and taking my time getting c
