View Full Version : Do you (or DH) like your street name?

We just got notification of our new street name for our house and my DH is pretty ticked about it. - Purple Lilac Lane. Our other name in the running (we are on a corner lot of a cul-de-sac) was Silver Linden Court. He was pulling for that one so hard that I feel bad! Well, sorta kinda :p

What about you?

OOOohh Purple Lilac Lane is pretty girly, :( Too bad for hubby!

However, won't that be so pretty if everyone on your street grows a purple lilac in their yard?! :)

I used to live on a street called "prairie", and you'd be surprised how many people don't know how to spell that word! LOL

Haha Boody's Way! :)

Our's is Woodrow Court, since we live in President's Way. Woodrow was a good President and I'm in school to be a teacher anyway so it kinda fits!

This is kinda off the subject since I don't live there, and neither does anyone I know, but a friend of mine grew up in Weiner, AR and there is a road in Weiner caller Weiner Cutoff!!

We almost moved to a street called Martha's Vineyard Cirlce. DH though it was kind of queer, but not a dealbreaker. I was dreading writing that long address on letters for the rest of my life

We live on Patrick Road. I'm kind of eh about it but when we were pregnant and discussing names, DH wanted "Patrick" for a boy and I said no way because that would be just too weird (I said it much nicer; I also just don't particularly care for the name). We now have a nephew named Patrick so it's out of the running for the next child.... When we were looking at houses or even just now I see a street name I like and I comment on it, he looks at me as if I'm the strangest person on the face of the earth. Guess he's just a logical male who doesn't care what a street name is.

When we were looking to buy, one of the houses we saw was on Seaman Way....yea, we decided that house had to be frikkin awesome to accept living on Seaman Way.

Can you imagine ordering pizza? I live at 123 Seamen way...no this isn't a prank call.

Yeah, I wouldn't like Purple Lilac Lane either. It is too long and kind of redundant. Lilac Lane would be better, IMHO.

Ours is rocco (named after the builder). I really don't like it, but it wasn't bad enough to stop me from buying the house. Now if it was Seamen, I don't think I could've bought it.

Purple Lilac Lane isn't the worst, but it does seem kind of cutesy. We live on Chestnut Ave and are happy with the name.

On the topic of funny names, during college we used to spend summers and vacations at a friend's summer home on Morning Wood Lane. Yup, the guys loved that one! DH and I still talk about it every so often.

Ours is Silverbell Tree Drive. I don't care for it. It's so damn long. What makes me mad is that all of the streets around us have really cool metal (silver, gold, bronze) names and we had to get the boring one.

I never really thought about it but one of DH's aunt's responded to a Christmas card we sent her with "your street name is definitely fit for the season". I never thought about it that way and for some reason, it makes me like it a little bit more.

Yeah, I agree. When we were looking to buy I was really hopeful we wouldn't end up with a number for a street name.

Our street name is Cedar - nothing special.

Last week on the radio a couple called in to have a dispute settled by a vote - they found the "perfect house" but it was on Powderpuff Lane, and the husband didn't want to buy the house because of the street name. The wife thought he was being ridiculous. Most of the callers sided with the wife - one guy said, "If I can live on the corner of Gay & Rainbow, that guy can deal with Powderpuff!" :)

Washington Crossing--Pennington Road

Yes, the hyphen is part of the name. That isn't an intersection.

I can't stand our street name, mainly because it's two names. I went from something like Pheasant Hollow Road to Silver Horseshoe to this. If I hear "Is that one word or two?" one more time, I'm gonna....

My work address is a street that throws people for a loop. It's KL Ave. When you say it to someone over the phone, they invariably say "What? Kale Ave.? " It is a gigantic pain, you have to say, no, KL, as in the two capital letters K- L.

:D :D Having just moved to Kalamazoo last May, I know exactly what you are talking about and find that whole P Avenue, PQ Avenue, Q Avenue, etc. system VERY confusing!!!

To answer the question though...I don't have an opinion on our street name either way.

But in our last city, we lived in a subdivision called Silver Ridge, but our street name (the main street through the sub) was Silveridge with only one "r." Now that was confusing...people were constantly sending mail to us at 123 Silver Ridge instead of Silveridge, and even our driver's licenses said Silver Ridge. I argued with the lady at the Secretary of State office once, telling her it was Silveridge and not Silver Ridge. She insisted that Silveridge was not listed in the state directory.

My friend lives on a street called Jamail and one time she had to call 911 for an emergency, and the 911 operator had no idea what she was trying to say. My friend was hysterical and kept saying, "Jamail! It's Jamail!" and the operator thought she was talking about someone named Jamail. "His name is Jamail? Is he OK? What exactly happened?"

Idaho Ave. It's fine. It's a lot better than the names in the new developments - I can't stand all the streets named after trees, especially the ones with more than one word. They just sound so precious. I like streets named after people best I think, they seem more classic.

Our section of town was built in the 1940s, and for some reason, they thought it would be cute to have all the names of the streets go together... so there are three streets in a row... Robin Hood Lane, Sherwood Road, and Forest Avenue. We looked at houses on all three streets and it never stopped us from considering buying a house there.

btw, there are more streets in our section of town, but these three take the cake!

Our street name is okay. We had a choice (we have a corner lot) between Turning Leaf Drive & Secret Bluff Drive. We choose Turning Leaf.

We're on Sunny Point. Blech. Why couldn't our house have been for sale just a block or two over, so I could have Tweedbrook or something less cutesy?

The ones that amuse me are the ones with these dramatic descriptions, with no follow-through. Case in point: my friend lives on Grand Lakeview Drive, which faces this muddy little pond with a wimpy fountain in the middle LOL

But Powderpuff Lane is pretty bad.

I forgot to add that we have a few in my neighborhood that are pretty funny - Wild Turkey Drive and Margarita Drive. Wild Turkey is the name of a whiskey. I guess the developers were all alcoholics or something.

Ours right now is Larkwood - I think it's pretty. There's a subdivision not too far from us where the developer named several streets after his kids, and several more after Disney's Lion King characters. It was awful.

We live on Upton Avenue. I like it because it makes sense! The west side of Minneapolis has north/south street names that are in alphabetical order, Aldrich-Zenith. Almost all of the north/south streets are Avenues and the east/west streets are Streets. Many parts of the city are just numbered. If you tell me you live at 35th Ave and 28th St South, I know right where you live. The only part of the city that I find confusing is Northeast, because the streets are named after presidents. It’s really hard to remember if Fillmore comes before or after Polk. :p

I prefer streets to be laid out on a grid. I get so lost and confused in neighborhoods with curvy streets and random names.

There are streets in my neighborhood named Gay St, Pratt St (isn't calling someone a prat an insult in the UK?), Mount Sneffels, which I think are funny.

We looked at houses on Princess, Duchess and Queen.

There was one street in our town that was named after some historical figure that was bad, or racist or something. They recently changed the name of that street to Sunrise.

The house we bought is on a street named someone's name, nothing very interesting. It's fine.

When I was little, we lived on Sassafras Shore Road. That's not so easy to remember how to spell when you're six.

I grew up on Almondwood Avenue. I've lived on Aviary Woods Way, Edwards Oak Court, Florence Street, and Glen Stone Avenue. Currenty our street is Butcher Drive. I hate it! Streets close by have pretty names like Cherry and Brookdale...but no, our street is Butcher.

Where I grew up, there were the "Cinderella Streets" - Midnight, Glass Slipper, Carriage Kingsmen, Grandball, Footman, Fairytale, Princess, and even Three Sisters Court. When I was a kid I wanted to live on Glass Slipper so bad...I was jealous of my friends that lived in that area...:o

Wow, some of those are pretty bad. We live on a numbered street, so I guess I'm indifferent. We used to live on Henry St, i was indifferent on that one too. I think DH and I are ok with our street name--we don't like or hate it particularly strongly. We live on Finn Cove Court, but a few times people have misheard me and typed in Sin Cove Court. So now I always say, "Finn, like Huckleberry Finn." :)

Our first house was on Potrero Dr. and it caught people outside of CA (or those unfamiliar with Spanish) off guard. I had mail addressed to me at Portero, Portrero, and Potero but luckily it always made its way to us.

02-18-2006, 07:15 PM
Our new address is Malon Bay Drive-- which isn't bad, except we don't know how to pronounce "Malon" (even the builder asked us how it's pronounced). I say "Mal-on" but I've heard it pronounced "May-lon" and "Mel-on"! It was originally supposed to be Caribou Court-- I don't know which I like better :)

There are some very RANDOM street names in my neighborhood though-- Lexi Davis St. and Shallcross Ave are some examples-- where did they pull these names from!?!

We live on Galaxy Drive. I think our subdivision developers were Star Wars fans. We also have Mystical Ct, Sparkle Lane, and Moonlight Dr.

The street name was actually one of the deciding factors to my DH when picking out our lot for the house we are building. We had narrowed it down to two different lots, one on Mariposa Grande Lane and one on Pablo Court. DH chose Pablo Court because it is shorter and easier for people to spell.

I live on a road with a long name...Mount Union Church Road. Yes there is a church on my road called Mount Union Church. It never fits into blanks on forms and looks funny when written on an envelope or on our checks. It generally ends up like this..Mt. Union Ch. Rd. and everything gets here:) ! When I tell people my adress and just keep saying names they are always caught off guard that it is so long! We don't mind the name though better then a RR(rural route) I grew up on or his 69 Farmers Lane.

I never really though much about this until I moved into an apartment on Sul Ross St. It's hard to say, and you always have to spell it.

Now I'm on Nina Lee Lane. I like it okay, but I always have to say that it's two words. And I have to say it in the middle, "Nina Lee, that's two words, Lane," so they don't think the two words I'm talking about are "Ninalee Lane."

There are two neighborhoods with street names I love. One is named after Robin Hood, like someone said earlier. (Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, Little John, Friar Tuck.) The other one is named for Operas. (Butterfly, Carmen, Pasquale, Faust, Traviata.)

Our street name is Hatteras. I can't tell you how many times people say "Oh, in North Carolina?" even when looking at our checks and seeing that it's Virginia Beach. My first house as a kid, I lived on Betsy Ross Rd. Our entire neighborhood was Revolutionary War references (John Jay Lane, Bunker Hill Rd, etc).

When my mom married my stepdad, we moved to Abbey Arch, and my townhouse that I bought after college was in the same neighborhood on Cathedral Drive (there were also St. Mark's Drive, St. Albans, Bishop Dr).

Now we live on Eagle Way (we live on a golf course).

After we moved in, however, my husband told me he wished the house was on Washington. Apparently Washington is his favorite founding father. He has a favorite founding father? Who knew :)

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person who is picky about street names. I think my husband thinks I'm crazy or something..although I know if we lived on a street with a really lame name he would be weird about it.

Anyway, I like our current street name, but we are selling this house & moving to a new community. We had a home reserved on "_____ Street" originally..which I didn't really care for, although my husband thought it was "cool." We decided (not because of the street) to choose another lot & we are now going to be on "____ Drive" which I think is ok, definitely better than _____. Those were the last 2 streets left, although there aren't any other necessarily great names anyway. Lots of cool street names in the neighborhood that we are moving out of though. :(

We are in the market for beach house in a historic area, and we are thinking twice about a certain property b/c of the street name! We hate the name. All things considered, it would not make or break the deal but we’re just not as excited about this property. It also has a lot to do with the fact that it is a historic area and every street name reflects that. On this particular street (which is private) they decided to rename it a horrible name that is decidedly rebellious and as people in the area feel, quite “snobby”. It says something about the owners who decided to name it, and the potential neighbors we might have – even if it’s just a vacation home for us.

DH and I were really conscientous about the street names when we were looking for our house. We didn't want it to be something we had to spell every time and we didn't want it too long either. The longest I think was Windmill Parkway (try writing that on all your thank you notes), then we lived on Sahara Ave, which was nice (being in Vegas [I]everyone[I] knows how to spell Sahara). Now we live on Legend Falls and you would be surprised at how many people still ask me to spell it.

Ugh - I hate our street name. It is the last name of one of the "founding fathers" of Portland, OR, so I guess I can't complain too much. We live in Dekum Street, and no one knows how to spell it. I wish we lived on something like "Oak Street" which is two blocks down!

I grew up on "Rock City Road" - my sister and I always used to sing "We built this city" when we were kids because of it.

I once lived on North St. Asaph Street. It sucked when I tried to order stuff on the phone (pre internet shopping) and the CSR would read my address to me as "North Street Ass-paff Street."*

We have friends who live on Stonehendge. It drives me batty to have to put the d in there; they said the developers were just idiots who can't spell things right.
