In Aug DH and I are going on a Carnival Cruise to Cozumel. This is our first cruise together, so I am not sure what I should buy, etc. I need some opinions on travel insurance. Is this something I should invest in? If so, does anyone have recommendations for good/affordable travel insurance? TIA!! :)

I don't get it, but it's a big risk. I would never recommend NOT getting it, even if it's a "do as I say, don't do as I do" kind of thing.

It wouldn't hurt. I would imagin that it's not more than a couple hundred dollars (but i don't know cause i've never bought it) but I guess in the grand scheme of things a couple hundred more isn't going to be that bad if something happends that you actually need it. It would be aweful for something to happen and lose all that money.

We booked our cruise through CruiseDeals.com and they offered insurance for only $85. I thought that was too cheap to pass up. This was the first time we bought travel insurance and the first trip without any problems.

I would get it esp. since your cruise is in August (which is the end of hurricane season). We had it for a cruise we never made it to. We got snowed in in Boston. We got a 75% refund, which stinks, but at least we got that much back!!!

I haven't ever cruised, but all my travel websites and magazines recommend getting the insurance...but not from the cruise line. They also caution you to read the fine print very carefully because many of the cheap policies only cover catastrophic events or partial refunds. For instance, if weather cancels your flight on Saturday, the insurer expects you to somehow meet up with the boat on the second day...thus only refunding you 1 day rather than the whole trip. So watch out for those tricks!

Yes! Yes! Yes! buy the travel insurance! i was supposed to take a cruise from barcelona to italy with my parents and my ex-dh, a week before we were supposed to leave he needed emergency surgery and as a result couldn't travel - because of the insurance my parents, who were kindly paying for the trip, got a full refund on both our tickets.. and not only for the cruise, but the airfare as well.

Oh my goodness YES!!! I've taken many cruises, never bought the insurance. In Feb DH went into emergency surgery 4 hours before we were supposed to get on the plane.
The cruise line was wonderful (Celebrity) and gave us a voucher for 75% of our original fare. So not too bad but would have been MUCH better with the insurance.
You just never know.
Enjoy your cruise!

I think it depends on how much you are spending on the cruise. My bf and I had booked a cruise last October, didnt buy the insurance, and then we had a death in the family. However, we didnt spend a ton on the cruise. If we were spending a lot then $80 for insurance would be worth it.
You can get the insurance right through the website if you buy on Travelocity or Orbitz.
