St.Patricks Day Weight Loss Challenge

Who we are:

We are a group of women who for 1 reason or another want to shed a few (or more) lbs. We need the encouragement of others no matter their size or goal and we thrive in an atmosphere where we can all support one another.

We welcome one and all. It doesn’t matter what diet you are on (if any) or how many miles a week you run (if any) we will all find lots of help and support here.

Known issues: Was an elite athlete 5 yrs ago, I'm an endomesomorph (gain weight eaily with a muscular build) need 7+ hours of cardio a week to see any results. I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life I have always been athletic and musclely (sp??) Currently I have a stress fracture in my foot which limits the types of cardio machines I can use (bike only) so I am swimming 2 - 3x week and trying to get to the gym 2-3x week as well

Like many others I feel like I need to 're-apply' myself for this challenge. I've lost 16 pounds already and the temptation to slack off on the exercise or to treat myself to a no-no food is really high right now.

Body fat...

I posted in the last challenge about not losing body fat. I'm trying to exercise more. However, I was wondering what a healthy amount is. I know the less, the better, but I need something attainable.

If I'm understanding things correctly, the first week is already over, so for the first week of Challenge #6, I should put down the weight I lost in the last week of Challenge #5? Is that right? Or am I confused about something? Thanks!

Ugh, I am beyond frustrated with this battle right now. I literally have been trying to get my weight in control since 1984....this is my third weight loss challenge on here and I'm right back where i started. Granted, my highest weight ever was 141, so I'm glad to not be THERE, but i'm 5 feet tall! My BMI is too high! I need to get this weight off before we TTC or I don't even think I'd be able to handle it.

Since what i'm doing clearly isn't working, i'm going back to tracking my points (100% of the time) and i've decided to not eat anything after 7pm on any night. I will see if that makes any difference. Also, I need to get chocolate OUT of my diet and I'm going to focus on impulse control specifically. I know that the impulse to eat something should pass if I can just wait it out....but I give in too much of the time. Ok, will check back in a week.

Different sources will give you different numbers on a healthy body fat % range. However, most seem to hover around the 18% to 25% range for women.

My HRM is taunting me: So I got a heart rate monitor to track the true amount of calories I'm burning in a workout session. (The ones on the machines can be pretty inaccurate.) You put all of your info in there, like height and weight and age, and it gives you all kinds of info, like target heart rate and calories burned. It also gives you your BMI. When I go to the BMI display it says, "30.4," and then scrolling across the top, it says, "O-B-E-S-I-T-Y!!!" Okay, it doesn't have the dashes and exclamation points, but I feel like it does. I feel like it's like a display on Times Square or something!

Hi ladies. I haven't been able to get in here in ages! How is everyone? My vacation was wonderful! So wonderful that we booked another cruise for the first week in Sept so we can do it all over again! :D You just can't beat a 5 day cruise with 2 stops in Mexico for only $885! We couldn't plan a "land" trip for that cheap... i know, i tried! This next cruise we are going with another couple we are really good friends with. We love traveling with them so it's going to be a lot of fun!

Weight wise i didn't do very well on the cruise :D I came back 10 lbs heavier! Some of it was traveling stress weight. I was down 5 lbs yesterday. I hope to finish off the other 5 by the end of this week. I am on my diet full swing after enjoying my week (2 weeks really since i didn't follow plan last week) of eating whatever i wanted! I am also taking some supplements i bought from the center to help speed up the weight loss. I have 1 months worth and hope to get my average back up to 2 lbs a week. This is week 25 for me and my average is down to 1.25 lbs lost a week.

We have a wedding to go to on March 25th and i hope to be 175 by then. I can't wait to see the number 7! It's been years! I have to lose about 3 lbs a week to make it to that goal and that's really pushing it but i am pretty motivated! I should be to goal by July. I am pushing to be rid of all 76 lbs by July 29th! My sister has a wedding reception (she got married last December at the courthouse) on August 5th and i NEED to be at goal and hopefully exceeded by then and NO LATER!

HELP KEEP ME ON TRACK! :D

I have a question. How can I work through and get past a plateau??? I was 143 lbs. and quickly lost down to 131 within a month and now I can't get past it. I actually weighed this mornign and was back to 134 so I'm MAD! I know I haven't been eating the best but not enough to put back on 3 lbs. Hopefully its' b/c AF is in town. Anyways what is the trick?! I already workout just about 6-7 days a week and I eat pretty well so what can I change. I usually work out for an ahour to 2 hours everyday and I eat 3 healthy meals a day with a small snack inbetween breakfast and lunch. I want to be 124 before this challenge is over and my first weigh is on Friday and I can't see myself being down 3 lbs. by then. lol. HELP!!!!!

Tonysweetie~I saw a great article in Prevention Magazine the other day about what type of workouts to do depending on your weight loss goals. Also, I've heard that if you DON'T follow you diet for a couple of days, then go back on it, the result is a "resetting" of your metabolism. I don't know if there is any scientific truth to back it up, but it worked for DH's aunt.

Tonysweetie- I've heard similar claims about going off your diet and restarting. Throw in something out of the ordinary too. One week i had a glass of wine on Friday and sort of followed my diet over the weekend and was down 2 lbs by Monday. I use my wine trick every now and then to speed things up. I'm not a big drinker regularly so that might be why it works for me.

I don't know about you but so often on my diet i eat the same things every couple of days. We have pancakes once a week, manicotti once a week, we eat a ton of lettuce and fresh green beans. Sometimes i just think our system gets bored processing the same things and it's good to break things up from time to time.

Unfortunately, i can't help with any workout advice. I've lost 32 lbs without a single workout. Despite buying an elliptical machine months and months ago it hasn't been used because shortly after buying it (and not having a place to put it) we decided to finish the basement. It wont be used again until the basement is finished and that's still several months off. Our fitness room is growing and free weights and a balance ball have been added... now if we just had a place to put it all! Our family room currently has a bookshelf, entertainment center, slip chair, love seat and new computer desk in it... the balance ball is in there too! :D Once the basement is finished our upstairs family room is going to become an office. We are quite cramped right now!

My best advice is to try to change things up a little or spend an entire day splurging. Then start dieting again the next day. Also, i wouldn't worry too much about it until after af leaves. Give it a week after that and you might see the other side of the plateau. Good Luck!

Thank you so much tgr68 & ellidew those are get suggestions. I'm starting to break up my workouts. Like Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays I power walk 50 minutes outside with my Mom. On Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays I hit the gym and do usually 35-50 minutes on the eliptical and upper body weights. Saturdays if they are not my days off then I walk bymyself for about 30 minuntes. I think that sounds like a good breakup ya know? So my body doesn't get too used to it. Also I'm trying to cut myself off of carbs after 5 pm. I've heard this is enough to help speed things along. So those are some things I'm going to try. Maybe Fridays will be eat what I want day and diet the restof teh week. It's worth a shot. Thanks ladies!!!

The good news is, I had a good loss this week. The bad news is, I will be on vacation all next week and am sure to gain it back! I'm going to do my best to be active, eat right, etc. but there are no promises. We'll be in St. John and I LOVE those tropical rum drinks!

It was a bad week for dieting, but my WW restarts today, and i'm determined to make a go of it. I just hate the way I feel. I do feel better since going back on WW, and yesterday I went to the gym and ran two miles, then did weights.

Tonysweetie, I am right with you...in fact, our weights are almost the same. But I have been at this plateau for over a year!!! Yes, over a year. It's horrible. All I want is to get back into the 120's....I haven't seen that since 2004...it's really eluding me. I'm going to do like you and not eat anything heavy after 6 (and NOTHING after 7, if I can stand that!)

I've been keeping a food diary over the past week or so, and I'm pretty surprised as to what I've learned!
1. I can eat anywhere from 1000-2500 calories in a given day and feel satisfied.
2. I don't comfort eat as much as I thought.
3. I tend to over eat while watching TV.
4. I do a lot of late night eating (from 10-11pm).
5. On days I work oustide of our home, I tend to eat less.

I think it really helps because I have really start to watch what I put into my mouth. I've caught myself more than once reach for my 3 Musketeers popables and thought, "do I really want to have to record this?"

I've been working out the last couple of weeks and yesterday I did a body analysis. Compared to my totals from 3 weeks ago I have lost 2 pounds of fat but by gaining muscle the scale has stayed the same. Also I've lost a total of 2 inches. 1/2 each each from my thigh, arm, waist, & hip measurments. So I'm happy with that even though the scale stayed the same. :rolleyes:

Two major things this week. I went and bought a scale so I can weigh at home. Well, I weighed at the gym and them immediately at home, and at home that very night. Turns out there is a 7 lb difference. :( boo. But I figured this way I'll know better with my own scale.

The other thing is although I think I gained a pound, even though AF is in this week, I fit into my skinny jeans with room to spare! So I think that I might be getting muscle mass, which is making me leaner but fiddling with the scale. I think when they offer the body analysis at work I'm signing up for it.

Okay, i'm an idiot. I just realized that i posted this in the V-day challenge and not here! Doh!

Continuing the weight loss challenge trend... i got a BFP over the weekend! (Actually, 3 BFP's on 3 different tests!) Going to the doctor tomorrow to confirm so assuming all is well i'm dropping out of the challenge.

Ugh!! This has already been a horrid food week! :( I'll definately need to get it together by weigh-in day (Friday). On a good note though, I've been working really hard to add in more cardio. I'm up to two 5 minute sessions a day on our new elliptical machine. Sounds pitiful, but I can barely walk on my Jello legs after that short time. :o It's really sad that I'm so out of shape!

Hi ladies. Thanks for the Congrats!

I don't have time to do the updates anymore but would absolutely HATE to see the front page go. I like going through and seeing who's lost what and how far they have to go, etc...

I know the updates have been few and far between even with the added help. tgr68 has volunteered and if the other threadmistresses could check in and let us know if they want to help do the updates then hopefully we can find a couple of people that are willing to update several times a week and can keep the challenges alive!

Do i even get a say in this anymore? :p lol.

eta... it doesn't seem like there are as many people participating this challenge as there were. If we could get the front page cleaned up then there probably wouldn't be that many updates to do!

Okay, in light of my grand exit :D I've cleaned up the entire front page of this challenge! It's ready to be handed over to whom ever can take the time to update it regularly and keep this going!

I'm still here... I did a gigantic update last Sunday but haven't been here since :p I was going to take a break from the computer for Lent, but I only lasted about 36 hours before I just about went crazy so I gave up on that. So I'm here any time you need me :D

So I weighed myself again today and realized my scale has been off this whole time :eek: so I'm really 133 lbs. which isn't all but 3 lbs. but sheesh! lol. So I've still lost a total of 12 lbs. which is good but I'm 133 instead of 131 hmm?! So that means last week I weighed 134 instead of 131 also. Somehow I managed to drop a pound overnight, haha. So I'm sticking to 133 and going from there. I also realized that my starting weight was actually 145 instead of 143. hmmm okay off to layout in the sun :D

Girls I'm sick of being on this darn plateau! So starting tomorow I"m giving the South Beach Diet a try. I did it a few years ago shortly after DH and I got engaged and I had some loss so I"m going to do this to get my body back in the groove. I'll update next week. Good Luck this week everyone. Ugh!! I've started noticing a pattern. The week AF is in town I lose up to 5lbs. The other weeks, I slowly gain it back. :( I've tried watching what I eat and excercising. Ack!!! I don't know what else to do. I would love to get outside and walk more, but with two babies (I sit for a friend.) and no double stroller, it's impossible!

Hmm the scale and I are not seeing eye to eye. I had a great week with food, points and water. AF should be showing up any day and I am sure I am just retaining water but I am up .2 Grrr. I know I need to get off my butt and move, but I have been so tired. Dr. put me back on Met (for blood sugar) so hopefully that will help some. Congrats to all the "losers" this week!

Congrats to you too on your loss! I just hope I make it to the 170's this time. It always seems to be the same cycle for me...get to 181ish then gain 20 pounds, get back down to 180 then gain 20 pounds...so frustrating!! It's always the last few pouds that are the worst to lose. Keep at it - you'll get there!! :)
