View Full Version : Introducing cup - where to find?

I am introducing both the cup and the sippy to DS simultaneously. He just gnaws on the sippy, but he seemed to take to the cup (I've been using a small juice glass) pretty well. But now, he doesn't like the cup either. I think it's because I put very little liquid (water or breastmilk) in there, and he gets impatient waiting for it to tilt just enough to go into his mouth.
Does anyone know where I can find small cups/glasses - plastic or glass - with a height of maybe 3 inches or so? I thought about using teacups, but the only ones I have are part of our china set.

This sounds goofy, but I've found that what works really well with my DD are the plastic caps that go on top of her bottles (some of these have holes in them, but the avent ones don't). They are just the right size and shape.

That's a great idea! Why didn't I think of that? ;)
You could also try a straw cup. My youngest daughter uses the Gerber Straw ones. She never took to the regular sippy cup.
re: straw cups - what's the best way to teach them how to use the straw? i try showing my son but he hasn't quite got the hang of it yet.

We got Noah to get the hang of a straw with smoothies. I'd suck it most of the way up, and then it was thick enough that it'd stay close enough for him to get it, and shortly he figured out how to do it himself.

We used cups from Ikea. They were cheap and just the right size.
DS also learned how to use a straw by drinking smoothies. Same method that the PP used.

My grandmother has these little glass containers that she saves for the grandkids to use and they are the containers that dried beef comes in at the grocery store.

If you order from a restaurant supply store, you can get 5 ounce plastic tumblers. They're pretty small... It looks as if this website has them for $3.98/dozen.

About the straw cup...I just taught DD how to drink from it. She is 7 months. At first I got the Take and Toss straw cups, but the straw is hard so she didn't like that. Then I got the Gerber straw cup with the soft straw

At first she would just knaw on the straw. When you first screw the top on, a little bit of liquid comes out of the straw so I'd put it in her mouth so she could get the feel of the liquid coming out. Once the liquid stopped I would sort of pinch her lips together around the straw. It took about a week or two, but now she loves the straw cup and I don't have to worry about weaning her from a sippy :) .
I also got this cup to teach her how to drink from a regular cup:

It has a lid on the inside that keeps the liquid from spilling out but the edge is like a regular cup.
I didn't do the smoothie, I just put water in the cups and gave them to her with solids.

Carolinagirl I would be very interested in the cups with the inside lip. Can you tell me where you got it? Thanks!

We have the gerber cup trainer, the sassy cup trainer, and the playtex cup trainer. Personally, I like the playtex one best. It's still "spill resistant", but drinks like a regular cup rather than a sippy.

You can get them at BRU.

The one I posted:

drinks like a regular cup too. It doesn't drink like a sippy. The rim of the cup is just like a regular cup but it has a little lid that tightens down inside to prevent the liquid from spilling out. It's called the Lil' Trainer Toddler Cup. Probably the same thing, different brand. Looking at the picture I posted of it, it does look like it has a spout down inside, but that's a little handle to tighten it with. The lips only go on the green part, not the blue part.

Yes, thanks, that's a wonderful cup/idea. I'm going to get that! My 12-month old still is not taking to a sippy at all and I've tried a million varieties - and even narrowed it down to two that she *seemed* to take to so that I didn't confuse her too much. The only type I haven't tried yet is the straw one. But she DOES like to sip from a regular cup if I hold it so I think at this point I'm going to try to skip the sippy and go right to a "regular" cup. Thanks for the suggestions.
Until I can get to BRU, though - probably not until this weekend - has anyone ever had their kid drink from one of the silver baby cups? We received three as gifts and I have them on display in our dining room, but I'm desperate enough to try these, but not sure if kids can actually drink from them (if they have anything in the silver that would make it bad) or if they're just for show....? Anyone know? Those are small enough that it might work. I like the 5 oz. cups, too - I may try those as well.
This is a very helpful thread, thanks!

I haven't actually tried a silver cup, but I feed DD every day with a sterling silver spoon that goes with my silver pattern. It was mine as a baby. She hasn't had any reaction to it at all.

Thanks so much, CarolinaGirl - that's really nice that you use the same one with DD that you used as a baby!
I found a smaller/thinner 7 oz. cup tonight that we tried out, without the lid, with her. Yes, she spilled a TON but she also DRANK some! We were simply amazed, and she tilted her head further back than she ever has before, and I think we're going to work with this one for a while and see what happens. Maybe she's just a baby who will skip straight to a regular cup (and once she's more proficient at it, I'll start using the lid more so that she doesn't spill it as much). But she's always just liked to drink out of our open cups; I was just getting tired of holding them for her. If that doesn't continue to work - well, I've got 3 silver cups to choose from! :D
