The first blanket you made had popcorns??? I'm too embrarrassed to post pix, but I made some hats & scarves this past winter as gifts. I'm *supposed* to be working on a granny square afghan, but it's been in my bag for ages.

yep, I love popcorns. A blanket I had as a kid was covered in popcorns so I was really excited to make a blanket with them. My very first crochet project was making squares for an afghan that my two sisters and I all worked on and gave to our grandmother. But my very first full afghan was that one I posted.

I'm a crocheter! I don't think I'd post any pics either! But Jane, all those beautiful baby blankets, are you trying to tell us something? LOL
You really do beautiful work!
Crocheting is another one of those things I went whole hog with, when I first learned. I do doilies too, and I'll have to find the pics of those, when I first did them. I'm going to be making a bunch of snowflake ornaments this year for a craft fair at work, but if I get stuck on something, I tend to put it down for awhile, so I don't have any snowflakes done yet, I got stuck on one term, and I just need to go back and re-read it. Soon, I think! LOL

thanks KristyK. No babies for me yet, just a whole bunch of neices and nephews. I used to make more adult sized afghans but I don't have pictures of those. I've made doilies and snowflake ornaments too.

My grandmother taught me how when I was pretty little, it was fun, but the only thing I could ever do was a long chain. I never did learn how to go back in and actually make something.....lol. I've always wanted to learn.

I'm a crocheter. I just recently learned how to knit, so I've been occupied with that a little more lately. Still, here are a couple of afghans I've done recently:
A baby afghan for a friend:

nice work angelpalgt. :)
I crochet too, but not as well as the ladies here. Love that Hat angelpatgt! I just make simple blankets. I'm currently making a baby blanket for friends of ours. It's all granny squares put together to look like the I of Illinois logo. I can make a big I ;) Otherwise it's just squares and stripes for me. I need to take a class sometime.

Thanks for the compliments! I love doing this stuff. My only problem is that I have a terrible time doing anything that is very repetitive. My projects need to have variety in them in order for me to pay attention long enough to get it done.

I couldn't agree with you more. I just can't stay focused on one project to complete it before starting a new one. I get bored very easily. I'm working on an afghan for our home and I'm finally 50% of the way there, but I'm already waiting for a particular yarn to go on sale at the store so I can start a new project. Geez! :)

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner crocheter. Mostly I do squares for an exchange I'm in as practice. Otherwise, all I've done is a hat and a baby blanket for a gift. I do like that it goes pretty quick - that's why I learned, because I got sooooo bored knitting a blanket!
Jane, I think it was you who offered to send me a pattern on the old site (which shall remain nameless)? Thank you so much, that is so sweet of you! Right now I have too many knitting projects going and I would feel bad about neglecting whatever you sent me but I will let you know when I need some crocheting inspiration!
Looking forward to seeing lots more pics from you girls - you all do beautiful work!

Yeah, popcorns have such a fun texture. I really like them, but I haven't tried any. It's a gorgeous pattern, too.

Oh I'm here too! I learned to crochet about 5 years ago. I don't have any pictures, and haven't worked on anything since I got engaged. But now that the wedding is over, I'm going to start a new project. I need to make one for my brother and his wife. But the reception is on July 16. And I don't know if I will have enough time to get one done. Does anyone have a pattern that is pretty quick? But still nice.

I wish I could do projects like that. in the last month both of my SILs have gotten PG and I'd love to make some baby things, but I don't know how. My granny could crochet just about anything, but she died in January. I have all of her crochet hooks and yarns since my mom doesn't crochet, but all I ever learned what how to do a granny square.
any suggestions for a good way to learn some simple things and where to get some basic patterns?
Jane&Andy
07-11-2005, 12:34 PM
Check out some learn to crochet books at your local craft store. I can't recommend a specific one b/c thats not how I learned. But Leisure Arts makes really good books with easy to follow instructions. Once you learn the basic stitches you can do anything.
jenji
07-11-2005, 12:41 PM
thanks. I will check on that
There is a lady I work with who crochets. but is left handed and thinks if she tries to teach me, I will end up confused
Jane&Andy
07-11-2005, 12:42 PM
yea, I could see how that would make it difficult. The hardest part is figuring out how to hold the needle comfortably - its a little different for everyone. Once you get past that you can do anything.
jenji
07-11-2005, 12:44 PM
I'm fairly comfortable with the needle and some basic things, but I can't read patterns worth a flip. I just haven't ever learned how.
Jane&Andy
07-11-2005, 12:46 PM
thats the other tough part. I used to read the instructions and confuse myself b/c it didn't sound right to me, I've since learned just to take it slow and do exactly what it says. Do you know what the abbreviations stand for?
jenji
07-11-2005, 12:53 PM
nope.
is there a website that has that sort of information and maybe some pictures?
Jane&Andy
07-11-2005, 01:03 PM
this site Lion Brand Yarn (http://www.lionbrand.com/) has free patterns.
there's a learn to crochet section there that might help.
Jane&Andy
07-11-2005, 01:06 PM
some basic abbreviations:
(and most pattern books will list a bunch of this info on one of the first pages, plus they'll always include any instructions for special stitches like a shell or popcorn)
YO: yarn over
SC: single crochet
DC: double crochet
HDC: half double crochet
TRC: treble crochet
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain

I used a book called "I Can't believe I'm knitting" to learn to...well knit. But they have the same one for crocheting. Maybe that would help

I haven't crocheted in a while. I have one project in progress but I usually work on them in the winter while I'm watching TV and keeping my lap warm. I really have no idea who to give them to though. I have made fleece blankets for pretty much everyone in my family so they don't need another blanket. I'm thinking of just making blankets and donating them to shelters.

Hi everyone! I'm recently rediscovering crocheting. I used to do it all the time with my grandmother who taught me but now I'm refamiliarizing myself withthe basic stitches and learning some new ones.
Since I can't convince DH to let me make him pink crocheted slippers, I thought it'd be fun to make stuff for my dog. Has anyone seen any online patterns for doggie outfits ?(that sounds so bad I know)
Also - for you more experienced crocheters - what is your preferred method of changing colors/yarns in a pattern? Like if you were doing stripes or edging or something. :)
ETA - I just found some under one of the sites listed above - Cool

07-12-2005, 12:32 PM
I've seen patterns for dog clothes at Michael's.
to change colors I:
(lets pretend I'm doing sc's)
YO and insert hook in next stitch
YO and pull up a loop (so two loops on needle)
then I lay the new color thread over the needle and draw through both loops to finish the sc
then I'll cut the other thread, knot the two ends together and stitch over them to hide the ends

Oh this is so cool. My mom taught me how to crochet and I've gotten better. I just learned how to knit, but still love crocheting. :)
I made 5 afghans for my bridemaids as part of their gift. I'll have to see if I can get those pictures here. I want to start making baby ones since I know at least 10 people pregnant right now.
MsPeachy
07-13-2005, 05:55 AM
Jane - Thanks. I will give that method a whirl! I never thought of stitching over the knot. Now, if I can only work on making my knot smaller & less obtrusive... is there a trick for that?
I think this is on my project list (once I size it for my wide 'n long dog!) It's so cute.

that's too cute. :) My dog would just eat it if I made him clothing. :p
I just double knot my threads and as long as the thread tails stay hidden then I don't notice the knots.
Well, I finally took the plunge - purchased a 'learn to crochet' kit at Michael's today. I'm excited to get started! Not sure my first project will be picture-worthy, but whenever it's done I'll share for laughs if nothing else. :) I have a practice skein to try to get the hang of it, and then I'm going to try to make an afghan for my brother for Christmas. I figure it's a nice place to start because it's flat - no seams required - and I have five whole months. :D

I started a baby blanket, probably about 1.5 to 2 years ago by now. I can't seem to remember which stitch I was doing. I haven't touched any yarn in about 1.5 years!! It should be a pretty basic stitch as well, but my attempting to do it is messing up the blanket (I end up unraveling too much when I go to undo my work). Any ideas to figure out what I was doing again?

Hey experienced crocheters - I'm about to start a project that involves crocheting "in the round". I have never done this before. Does anyone have any advice or tips to share on crocheting this way?
Larissa
08-04-2005, 10:18 AM
Jenji - I could take a picture of it. I'm a horrible crocheter though. I mostly work on it when I get bored and I only know (used to know?) the most basic stuff. So no laughing at my blanket ;)

MsPeachy - are you working from a pattern? I've done stuff like that before but I don't really have any tips. I just followed the pattern instructions. I am working from a pattern. I'm not sure if it's my inexperience or the pattern itself but I'm having trouble following this pattern. It's for some little house slippers. sure thing MsPeachy. I'll be happy to help.
MsPeachy
08-05-2005, 02:55 PM
Ok Jane - I have almost the whole pattern here and I'll point out the parts that confused me or where I think I did something wrong. :p
Heel - Ch 21 loosely
Row 1: Hdc in third chain from hook and in ch across; working in free loops of beginning ch, hdc in each ch across and in turning ch; ch 2 (counts as first hdc, turn: 40 hdc.
Row 2: Hdc in next hdc and in each hdc across; ch 2, turn. Repeat Row 2 for a total of 12 rows. At end of last row, ch 26 for Instep; being careful not to twist ch, join with slip st to first hdc of last row. Finish Off
So I got this part ok and had a flat piece and then a chain that looped over the top like the strap on a sandal might do. I wasn't sure if I joined the chain to the right place.
Toe - Begin working in rounds
Rnd 1: Skip first 19 hdc from edge (where ch was joined), join yarn in next hdc, ch 2, turn, hdc in next hdc and ch around, join with slip st to first hdc (now and throughout): 66 hdc
Rnd 2: (decrease rnd): Ch 2, turn; hdc in next 32 hdc, place marker using 2” piece of yarn, skip next 2 hdc, hdc in remaining hdc; join: 64 hdc
Rnd 3 (decrease rnd): Ch 2, turn; hdc in next hdc and in each hdc to within one st of marker, move marker, skip next 2 hdc, hdc in remaining hdc; join. 62 hdc.
Repeat Rnd 3 15 times; 32 hdc
Next Rnd: Ch 1, turn; decrease over next 2 sts 16 times; join, finish off leaving 10” end: 16 sts. Weave end through remaining sts, pulling to close toe. Finish off.
On this part, I was confused because I've never used markers before and I was worried the skipping of 2 stitches every round would make odd holes in the sole. So I muddled on through and basically ended up with something that looks like a mule-type shoe. The problem is, the back of the foot is supposed to be covered too since it's a slipper.
Am I just too inexperienced to be attempting something like this in that I'm not reading the pattern correctly? Any help would be appreciated and I promise I won't get offended if you say I'm out of my mind ;)

Larissa - those look like double crochets to me.
MsPeachy - I don't know if its just too early in the morning or what. But I'm getting lost in the pattern. I don't think I can work all that out in my head without some yarn in front of me. Sorry.
Larissa

Thanks, Jane!!
I guess if I google double crochet it will tell me/show me how to do it, right? I know the yellow part of the blanket was 4 doubles and the green part is 4 singles, but I seriously can't remember how to do *anything*!!
Jane&Andy

Larissa -
Double crochet: YO insert needle in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop. YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.
Good luck. If you google Lion Brand Yarn their website has some basic instructions and free patterns you might find helpful.

the yellow part of the blanket was 4 doubles
looks to me like its two doubles.
hmm, the blue part might be a Half Double crochet (HDC) instead.
HDC: YO insert needle in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 3 loops on needle.

MsPeachy - I don't know if its just too early in the morning or what. But I'm getting lost in the pattern. I don't think I can work all that out in my head without some yarn in front of me. Sorry. That's cool. But in a way, it sorta reinforces what I was thinking - that the pattern is more confusing than most which would explain why I was getting lost. :p
I ended up scrapping it and starting on a little totebag to practice working in the round a little more.

I started crocheting 7yrs ago when I was pregnant. I don't crochet too often, basically everytime I'm pregnant lol
I've made 3 baby blankets, a pair of booties, a cardigan and 2 bonnets.
Right now I"m working on an afghan for my husband and an afghan for my couch. but I have so much stuff to do always that the going is very slow.
Jane&Andy, do you have a pattern for the second blanket in your second post? It's labeled "my current project" and it looks like it's yellow and white.
Thanks!

So I finally finished this little tote bag last week. I had 2 skeins of the multi-colored stuff and 1 ball of the solid and wanted to make something to use them up. I think I'll use this as a "project bag". It's about 12" long, 3" wide, and 15" high. I'm pretty proud of myself since the bag has a definite structured bottom, I stitched the whole thing in the round (good practice!), and I made and attached the handles myself! The pattern and style was of my own design.

Note: I just noticed it looks a little bulgy on the sides - it's really straight but I took this pic with it propped up so the weight is dragging it down a tad.

I swear, this pattern was the easiest thing to make. It was all double crochet stitch. The only trick was the constant switching of colors for the red & white stripes (good practice tho!). It only took me 2 1/2 days to stitch and another hour or so to make the "stars".
I'm actually considering adapting the pattern for holidays. I can envision an orange jacket with a jack-o-lantern face on the back.

What do you think is the easiest pattern for a baby blanket? I'm a newbie and don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

EJS - I just finished my very first full project, a baby blanket. I thought it was pretty easy. it was 25 individual squares with a border around it. by the time I got all the squares made, the border wasn't so intimidating.
I'll try to post a picture soon

ejs - anything with holes in it will go faster than a solid afghan just b/c you get to skip stitches. Anything that is mostly basic stitches - sc, dc or some variation on those stitches should be easy. I typically avoid patterns that have to be pieced together in the end b/c I'm not happy with how they look in the end, but that's just my opinion of my own work.
also, using regular yarn - nothing with fringe or tons of fluff will make it easier. Some of the "funky" yarns make a neat finished product but it is much harder to see what you are doing.

jenji - all 3 patterns came from an old pattern book I have. I bought it years ago so and haven't seen it in stores in ages. If you PM me, I can probably help you out with getting the pattern.
MsPeachy - they don't take terribly long. I piece them together as I work on them. They're actually one solid piece from head down to 1 leg. The stuffing is quick and easy. I go back and do the detail work (add the eyes and giraffe spots) once I have a set done. I've never timed it so its hard for me to guess how long, I guess I can get 1 done in two evenings if I work on it pretty consistantly.

So I bought 2 skeins of this yarn on a whim a couple weeks ago and now I'm not sure what I'd like to make with it. At first I was thinking a hat but I'm not sure if it's right for that. A scarf would probably be the easiest but I don't know if I want a scarf.
Any ideas or links to patterns of what I might make. I'm better at crocheting but I could knit it too.

I really want to learn how to crochet or knit - does anyone have any suggestions on how to get started? Is it necessary to take lessons or can I do it from a book? I have also heard of DVD's? What do you all think?

I just taught myself a couple months ago. the book "I can't believe I'm crocheting" was recommended to me and it was really great. the illustrations were clear and the instructions were simple. I recommend getting a book like that and learning basic stitches. you can use those to do a basic pattern to get the hang of it. it really is Simple. Knitting took a lot more effort and instruction for me, but you can learn either from a book, I'd say.

after I got the basic stitches, I have been borrowing a friend's Leisure Arts leaflets with 5 or 6 patterns each that each feature a different stitch or technique. they look like this:

I'm sort of stuck on what to do right now. I'm working on a shrug. It's an all one piece pattern so there are no seams, color changes etc. Here's the problem, I'm out of yarn. I have all of 8 rows left to complete the sleeve and that's it!!
So I'm trying to decide if I should
a) suck it up and buy more yarn. This skein was a 350 yd skein so I'd have alot left over. Plus this sort of defeats my purpose of using this yarn to get rid of my leftovers from teh Patriotic dog jacket project.
OR
b) unravel the whole thing and start over adjusting the pattern to have 3/4 sleeves instead of full sleeves to have enough yarn to complete. I have about 10-12 hours in on the project but it wasn't hard or complicated and worked up fast.
Help!

That crochetville site is great! I am so impressed at what people make.
I picked up my crochet hook this week for the first time in months. I wanted to start with something quick and easy, so I made my very first scarf. Not too terribly exciting... I just saw some cool yarn and did rows of 10 single crochets. I like it though, and it only took 2 nights. I think I'll make a few more as Christmas gifts.
Speaking of Christmas, our group at work does a silent auction at our holiday party, and the proceeds go to charity. I think I'll make a baby afghan to donate this year. Better get cracking!

I'm actually thinking about starting a larger project like an afghan or baby blanket and was wondering what were common hook sizes used on them? I bought a 4-pack of M-P sizes and am now wondering if I'm ever going to get to use them all. :p

M-P is pretty big. I've used P and Q for big needles but never M, N or O.
I use G, H, I, and J pretty frequently.

Wow, pride&prejudice! I learned to crochet when I was 10 but never actually made anything more than a pot holder. Now that my SIL is pregnant, I decided to make baby afghan for her. It's weird, it works diagonally from one corner to the other, but soooo easy and fast! I'm halfway finished and have maybe 6 hours in it (coming from a beginner, I feel like that's super easy!) You dc in the sc's, and dc in the sc's. (They alternate.) The ends are always a hdc on the outside, if that makes any sense. That's working up to the middle (it increases by 2 stitches every row.) Going back down to the opposite corner is completely different. I haven't started that yet. Hmm, I might just go do that right now. :)

I just picked up a book this week and am attempted to learn this. I have a hard time holding the yarn as the book says - wrapped around my pinkie - any suggestions? I can get it started but then doing the 2nd row is kind of hard for me, and advise?
Jane&Andy
12-20-2005, 05:57 PM
Julie - the hardest part to crocheting (IMO) is figuring out how to comfortably hold the yarn and needle. I don't wrap the yarn around my pinkie or any other finger.
Not sure I can describe it well at all, but I hold the needle in my right had with my right index finger resting on top of the needle. I use that finger to guide the loops that are already on the needle. I use my left hand to work the loose yarn over the needle.
Try playing around with it and see if you can't find a way that works for you. Don't stress over what the books says, there's no one right way to do it.

just did some crocheting so I need to correct what I said. My right index finger does all the work guiding/controlling the yarn on the needle.
I hold the blanket (or whatever I'm making) between my left thumb and index finger with the loose yarn coming off the skein resting between my left index and ring fingers.
hope that helps! good luck!
MsPeachy
12-21-2005, 04:59 AM
Oh I definitely don't hold the yarn in the "correct" way. I hold the yarn coming off the ball/skein in position with my left index finger. I think my grandma taught me that and that's all I've ever known. It's all in what feels comfortable to you.
Have any of you crocheter's ever done any doilies or crocheting with fine yarn/thread and small needles? I recently saw a large doily my grandma made and was super-impressed with the obvious skill and technique it must have taken. The stitches were so even and fine and I was amazed she could keep the pattern straight. I wouldn't mind expanding my skills in this area and was wondering if anyone else does this type of work also.

Around your pinkie????
I guess I crochet wrong too! I use my index finger to guide the yarn and usually hold whatever I'm doing as well with that hand. I only hold the needle with my right hand.

MsPeachy - I've made doilies. The technique isn't any different, it just feels disorienting at first to switch to such a small needle and fine yarn. I think I had trouble at first holding the yarn tight enough but that was just a matter of getting used to it.

A total novice here! But I love to crochet. My grandmother taught me the basic stiches when I was little, and through the power of the internet, I am reteaching/learning more. Right now I am attempting a hat. It is not going well!!!
A question-why does my chain always curl? It isn't flat and straight. Should I be trying to make the stiches more uniform?
I do wrap it around my pinkie! I feel like such a pro ;)

My chains always curl too. Even sometimes the first row will still have some curl to it.

I guide the yarn with my left index finger too and I hold me needle all funky I've been told. It feels too loose when I hold it how you're supposed to. maybe I should learn to do it right
Jane - I gave my SIL the stuffed giraffe today and she LOVED it!!! I'm so excited. I didn't think it would be quite the hit that it was, but I'm so proud of it.
Carrie - the giraffe really isn't nearly as hard as it looks. it's mostly just chains and single crochets in rounds. It really is as simple as that. it's only the 3rd or 4th thing I've made (the others were blankets) and I caught on real easy

Thats why I like having multiple hobbies. Me too! In addition to crocheting I like knitting, cross-stitch, and needlepoint. Basically I'll try anything that involves making something with your hands.
I felt more "project-minded" in the summer for some reason. I wish I was motivated since my BFF got me a GC for AC Moore for Xmas. Oh - speaking of - this was something I wanted to ask you all. I recently found out my BF is learning crochet. Her and I talked about how it'd be fun to do a project together but we couldn't think of what you could do in tandem. I think we were thinking of something like making sections of a blanket and then stitching them together. Essentially we'd like to make something together and then be able to have as a keepsake/memento of our friendship, etc. Has anyone ever heard of or done anything like this?
Jane&Andy
01-11-2006, 06:56 AM
MsPeachy - my very first crochet project was something like that. My two sisters and I made a blanket for our grandmother. It was made up of lots of granny squares of all different patterns. The only problem we ran into with doing it that way is that we all stitched differently - one of us was very tight, one was loose and the other was in the middle. So the squares weren't all the same size. Made it interesting to put together - one of the squares was so big it was almost like a bowl in the middle of the blanket.

Hi all,
I am new to crocheting. My grandmother taught me when I was little but I could only do a chain. So a few months ago I bought the book, "I taught myself how to crochet." And it is really hard to learn from a book but I could sort of do it.
Then this past Saturday there was a "Knitting and Crocheting Party" at our AC Moore where you could go and learn how to do those things for free with demonstrators. So I went but the lady who I sat with was foreign and I couldn't understand her very well. And when I thought I had it, I tried to get her to watch me do it to see if it was right and she just kept taking it over. Watching it and doing it are two different things! Because I could see what she was doing but then when I went to try it myself I couldn't do it.
So I went home and practiced. I got out my book and the lesson made my book make much more sense. So now I understand the techniques. But now all I have to do is practice.
Here is what I have trouble with. I keep losing count and ending up with really uneven, triangle shapes! I try to count out my stitches as I go but then when I turn around, I lose count. I never know if the first stitch that is what you began with attatched to the hook counts. And then near the end I can't tell where to end to make it even.
And sometimes I have trouble when I am trying to do the half-double stitch (or double or triple) in that my loops got too tight on the hook and I can't get back through!
I am sure I will get better with practice. I hope one day I can be as good as you all! DH asked what I was making yesterday and I said our baby's first blanket and he looked at me funny since we aren't even thinking about TTC and I responded with, "Don't worry, it won't be done for a few years..."
:)
I am so excited to get better though! Michaels was having an awesome yarn sale and I went and bought a bunch of funky yards, some really soft cool yarns and other neat yarns. I am going to make scarves for everyoen for Christmas. Hopefully I will get better by summer so I can start to use this neato yarn!!!

Wow Jane I cannot believe how quickly you can get things done. The afghan is gorgeous and those have to be your best set of critters yet!!
So question for you. The baby afghan I am working on seems to be so small. I am on about row 12, with 115 to do plus 4 round of edging and it just doesn't seem like I am going to be anywhere near the length it looks in the picture. Am I maybe doing the stitches too tight? Any help is much appreciated. Can't take a pic cause our computer isn't set up.
jennylou
02-27-2006, 05:24 AM
mel - I often find that I have to add more on to the pattern in order for it to be long enough (wide enough) to my satisfaction. Other than that - no advice.
Am working on two different projects right now - both baby blankets. I'll have to post pics when I'm done. :)
Jane&Andy
02-27-2006, 06:17 AM
thanks Mel and MsPeachy. :)
Mel - how is the width on your afghan? Is it as wide (estimated since you don't have the border on yet) as it should be? I never ever pay any attention to how many rows it says I need to do for the length. I just continue with the pattern until its the right length. My afghans often end up slightly larger than the pattern says they should be.
If your afghan is too narrow than it could be that your stitches are very tight. If thats the case then you may want to consider switching to a larger than suggested crochet needle for future projects.
When I first started my stitches were really loose so I'd use a smaller needle, they eventually tightened up and I made one really small afghan and realized that I didn't need to do that anymore.

Thanks Jane and Jennylou. The pattern onlu gives a finished size which I can remember off the top of my head. I think its 37 by 43 which makes no sense since its way longer than it is wide in the picture.
If you add extra rows how do you handle the edging since you will have extra stitches? Sorry for the questions but as Jane knows I am a beginner and this is only my second project.
Will have to measure it tonight and see where i am

Mel - I never worry about how many stitches the border takes. I never get it right so I just fudge it and it works out. Its a little harder to do when the border has a lot of pattern to it but I can still make it work.
That white afghan I posted is nowhere near the size it was supposed to be. It was a little wider than the pattern called for and I cut the length short so that you actually have to turn it sideways in order for it to be longer than it is wide. It was such a thick afghan (since each row overlaps with the one below its basically double thickness) that I decided I didn't want it so large. Plus it was taking me freaking forever! Now its finished and a more useable size. :)

it does look complicated. But it turned out great. Thankfully this one has the same 2 rows repeated over and over again. So once I got it down I had it and its simple. Just takes me forever since i am so slow at it.
Well I will just make it the length I want it to be then and figure out the border later!!
Jane&Andy

it actually was not at all complicated, it was all double crochets. It was just slow b/c half of each row overlapped with the one below and there were no spaces.

jennylou - what time frame do you have in mind?
It sounds like fun BUT I need to switch gears and do a cross stitch for my SIL as a wedding gift and I've got Joey due to arrive in just a few more weeks. So I don't expect to be productive for the next few months but hope to get back to it soon after that.
jennylou
02-27-2006, 07:31 AM
Jane - we could set any timeframe we wanted, I guess. Depends upon what everyone wanted to make and also for the newbies, it might be helpful to give more time as I remember those first few blankets I made took forever since I was a lot slower. :) Maybe a spring crochet off? Trying to get a little bit done each week and showing/posting our progress? Not to worry - I know they'll be times I won't get much done either. :p

I'm only slow b/c I lose interest and put the blanket down for a few months and don't work on it at all.

What is your favorite yarn for making baby-related items?
A friend of mine is having a baby in the summer and I'd like to make them a blanket in a soft, lightweight yarn that won't be too hot (since it'll be summer)
TIA! :)
Jane&Andy
03-09-2006, 10:56 AM
I don't have a specific favorite brand, I buy whatever I can find that I like - soft, nice color.
For something lightweight I'd pick a lighter yarn and then choose a pattern with holes in it.
melandtim
03-09-2006, 11:46 AM
I made the mistake with my first baby afghan of making it with regular yarn and it was very heavy. For my current project I did as Jane suggests found something really light. In michael's they have sections with the baby afghan books and tend to have really nice soft yarn in that section.
jennylou
03-09-2006, 11:49 AM
I have been bad and not crocheting! I should take out my hook tonight. :)
For baby blankets, I always find the soft yarn and use that. My theory - babies are soft - their blankets should be too. :)

If I'm making something that isn't too big (i.e. sweater, hat, socks/booties) I'll use a superwash sports-weight wool (Jaeger and Dale both make beautiful baby wools). For cost reasons, if I'm making something bigger like a blanket I like to use Bernat Softee Baby which is an acrylic. Like everyone else said, pick something soft but also make sure it is machine-washable/dryable and sports or DK weight.
MsPeachy
03-09-2006, 02:46 PM
Thanks for the replies everyone. For those of you who have used the soft acrylic yarns, how have you found them to hold up in the wash? Can you really follow the instructions on the skein without ruining your work?
(as you can probably tell, I haven't made many "garments")

I am just starting to learn the basics of crocheting, but I've knit for years so I thought it would be nice to know how to do both. :) I've knit a little dress for my daughter, and I thought it would look really cute with some crocheted flowers attached to the front of it.
Does anyone know where I could find a pattern to make flowers like that? I don't know any good sites for crochet patterns yet. TIA!

Scooter - I don't know if they have flower patterns but this is a good website: Lion Brand Yarn (http://www.lionbrand.com/content-crochetPatternIndex.html). Aside from that I would just try googling crocheted flowers and see what you can come up with.

You guys are so smart, they have tons of crochet flower patterns. And even better for me, they're listed as "easy." Thanks!
Aprilshowers, sure, I can post a pic of it. But it hasn't been blocked yet, and it needs finishing. The sides have to be sewed up. It's a weird pattern because you knit up and over and down, and then sew up the side seams! Hope it doesn't come out too big: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/dasmud/c012.jpg
This is from this pattern:
Blossom Dress (http://www.magknits.com/Jan06/patterns/blossom.htm)
You can see what I'd like to do with the crocheted flowers across the front. She used embroidered ones like this:

Jane&Andy
10-19-2006, 06:42 AM
I'm just thinking this through in my head so it may need to be modified when you actually try it but something like this ought to work...
ch2
sc in second ch from hook, ch1
turn, 3 sc in sc, ch1
turn, 2 sc in first ch, sc, 2 sc in last ch, ch1
and so on til ear is big enough (so increasing in size by 1 sc on each end for each row)
then you can either slip st or sc around the whole thing to give the edges a finished look
does that make sense?
I just started working on the afghan for my neice again. My goal is to have it done by the end of the month (she's not due for another month after that but I need to move on to other projects).

I'm glad there's a crochet thread here! I just started my first project, recreating a dog sweater my aunt made YEARS ago. I've had one lesson (more of a tutorial) with a lady at the local yarn shop. She was REALLY nice, and sympathized with my lack of knitting skill. (I have been trying to learn regular knitting from MIL, but I'm just not getting it--either I'm dense, or it's the way MIL is teaching me!) I've picked up crocheting much more easily than knitting.
So far my biggest obstacle is trying to learn to RELAX my tension a bit. I find it hard not to make such tight stitches, but I'm definitely getting better as I go along. I'm also working on a scarf for myself with one of those multicolor striped yarns. It's a really fine yarn though--recommended hook size is 3-4 mm. It's probably NOT suitable for a scarf, but I really liked the color. We'll see how it goes.

12-11-2006, 08:04 AM
Chefker - welcome to the wonderful world of crochet. :)
I had my first crochet disaster recently - was almost done with an afghan for my new neice and then realized I'd started skipping stitches at the beginning so it just got narrowerer and narrowerer as I finished it. Oops! So I put it aside to deal with later and started an entirely new one. Luckily its gone really fast - I'm working on the border now and the recipient is only a few days old. I'll take a picture when its done. :)
chefker
12-11-2006, 10:28 AM
Thanks,Jane. :)
OK, I'm questioning myself with this tension thing--the scarf I'm working on is getting a bit bunchy now, starting around around the foundation chain. Is this normal, or did I make my stitches too tight? The lady who gave me that crocheting lesson didn't seem too concerned about it, but I hope my piece flattens itself out when I'm done! Now I'm second guessing myself. :o
Jane&Andy
12-11-2006, 10:43 AM
it sounds like your chain stitches might be too tight - its easy for that to happen

That is beautiful, Jane! What type of yarn is it? It lays so nice and flat - that may sound like a weird compliment but mine are always kind of bumpy and bunchy so I really do mean it as a compliment!
I also have the tight starting chain problem. How do you avoid it? I've been thinking of starting my next project with a bigger hook for the initial chain.
Jane&Andy
12-16-2006, 01:14 PM
thanks aprilshowers. Its just yarn from Michael's, nothing special. I think the brand was Simply Soft but I'm not positive.
With the chains... I find its easy to not pay attention when I'm doing them and then I pull the thread too tight. If I just think about it as I do each chain then I don't pull the thread so tight.

Leisure Arts makes good books with easy to follow instructions but I can't suggest a specific one. Once you start learning the basics and have specific questions I can probably help but I can't really teach it via the internet starting from scratch.
The hardest part (I think) is getting comfortable holding the needle and yarn. Everyone does it different. Once you get over that hump and learn the basic stitches you can do anything.
try the leisure arts website - I posted a link in my previous post.

If you can get someone (like you said your Grandma) to show you in person, that's the very best way to learn. Just remember, though, that everyone holds the yarn and hook differently, so try to watch what she's doing with the hook rather than how her hands are positioned.
If that doesn't work or you still have more questions Lionbrand.com has great instructions with drawn illustrations. they start at http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?store=/stores/eyarn&faqKey=106 and you just click "next topic" to go to the next step.
The book I found helpful in teaching myself was I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting. I found it at wal-mart, but you can get it almost anywhere. they also have a DVD now.

crocheting is really easy once you get 3 or 4 basic stitches down. After you have those down, you can start learning the abbreviations used in patterns.

According to the TSA - Permitted and not permitted (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#4)items, you can bring small scissors Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches and crochet and knitting needles (doesn't state metal or plastic but I'd think plastic would be the best choice.

Pineknot - I got the pattern from Jane. it was a really easy pattern. 4 different rows repeated over and over. The border was a bit more challenging but definitely a pretty good beginning project. If you want I can send it to you. Just PM me with your email address.

This thread has some gorgeous works of art in it.My mother crocheted all during my childhood. She passed away in 03 and not one of us ever learned. She was left handed so it was always harder for her to show us. Anyway earlier this year I decided I was going to learn and finished my first granny square afghan. Thanks for all the inspiration.

I've made three scarves recently:
ones with fluffy, soft yarn. Gifts for Christmas.

And one with regular cheap yarn for me - it does the trick!

Beautiful work ladies.
I am looking for Christmas stockings for my girls. Haven't found any in the store we care for. Came across this pattern for some crocheted ones Stocking (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lffunt/bgstocking.html) http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lffunt/BGSTOCK1.JPG. Just curious if anyone attempted a stocking before. Wish I could crochet these, but best I can do is straight line stuff for an afghan

I'm starting to learn how to crochet. I bought a kit "learn to crochet" from AC Moore that came with needles etc. Although it is copywrited in the 80s and you can tell by the patterns in the book - the vests are funny.
I'm starting to understand what I need to do but when I'm working on a pattern I find I "loose count" - how do you guys keep track.
For example on pattern has you doing 3 single crochet, 2 single crochet in the next single crochet and you repeat it 6 times.
If I'm watching TV I keep forgetting where I am. Any tips?
PS I'm trying to crochet some play food for DD, I suppose I should start with something simple like a blanket huh?

alienhost - most patterns I do are worked across the entire row. So while it may say "work 6 times" I just know when I get to the end of the row I'm done. One trick you could try is placing a small piece of yarn where your pattern starts and moving it along as you go. You could try starting with making your DD little potholders for her kitchen instead of food. I find those are good patterns to learn on b/c they are simple and you can finish them faster than an afghan.

Jane&Andy thanks for the tips. A pot holder is a great idea. I was trying to make a circle last night and it really didn't come out right. I'll try the potholder first, a square one ;)

alienhost - since I am pretty new I have trouble as well. What I do is use a pad of paper. Mostly I have used it just to keep track of what row I am on since my paterns have been pretty simple but you could make marks to determine how many times you have done the stitch to keep track

thanks melandtim I did try that but I found I was too lazy to put a mark for each stitch (was slowing me down) so I tried marking for every 4 or 5 and somehow I'd lose count again.

alienhost - eventually you'll be able to see your stitches a little better (this one took a while for me) and then you can go back and recount how many you've done in case you lose track. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Help please! I made a decent little potholder for DD's kitchen but....
I'm now trying to follow a pattern that goes like this (first 5 rows displayed):
R1 - ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook
R2 - 2 sc in each sc around (12 sts)
R3 - *1 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times
R4 - *2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times
R5 - *3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times
so I was doing OK until I got to R4 and R5 - does the "2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc" mean
make 2 sc, with one sc in two consecutive sc OR make 2 sc in the same loop then make 2 sc in the next sc (this is what I did)?
Does that make any sense? It's all wavy when it should be straighter to I'm thinking I've misinterpretted the directions (since I'm new to this).
TIA!

I think it means 1 sc in each of the next 2 consecutive sc and then 2sc in the next sc. It's not worded as well as it should be but I've made similar patterns before.

Okay, basically anything she sells. I know she makes her own patterns, but I don't think she shares/sells them. Any ideas where I can find patterns similar to these?

I did find that tjw1963 has a channel on youtube with crochet videos and does a lot of beanies that are somewhat similar. and she also does the flowers, but I'm still looking for an actual pattern
this is an adult pattern http://croshaydesign.com/patts.php?choice=PATT-JCR
toddler pattern, but it uses double crochets instead of singles http://thelongestyear.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/10/crochet_toddler_1.html
maybe http://qualitycrochet4fun.blogspot.com/2008/02/elegant-angles-beanie.html and trade the triangles out for shells.

Are you on Ravelry? I bet if you searched on there you'd find something. They are adorable but look to be a fairly simple pattern (says the very occasional crocheter:).

I've had this one bookmarked for about a week, planning on making that and adding a flower for DD. Though, I do like some of those thicker ones, as they'll be good for more than just fall that lindybug posted.

I'd definitely check ravelry. Also, some etsy sellers sell patterns--I just bought a cute "faux mary jane" baby bootie pattern so check other sellers for a similar pattern! It seems like a pretty simple beanie hat with scalloped edge and flower.
For flowers, there are some free patterns online and even on youtube. You can also check your local library for crochet pattern books. I currently have 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet out from my library--great book!

Very cute! I don't think they would be too difficult to make. Seems like a fairly simple pattern. I'll have to go see if I have some yarn I wouldn't mind using for testing, lol.
