He's two weeks old, and he's had a lot of gas for the past week, and we're wondering if it's the Avent bottles. We've called his pedi, who recommended gas drops, and burping him when he's finished with his bottle he is a VERY aggressive eater, and sucks down the bottle extremely quickly, despite our best efforts... DH and I are wondering if we should switch brands....and if so, which one?

I've heard Playtex is good, but which kind?
We're not sure if it's because of the air in the bottles, or air while he gulps....any suggestions??

TIA

I think every baby is different, but we switched from Medela bottles to Avent and the gas problem was eliminated.

I guess it depends on how they eat, too. My DS will go really agressively for awhile and then take a break. When he is taking a break, I take out the bottle and burp him. I read somewhere that bottle-fed babies should be burped every 1/2 ounce. We usually even out to burping every ounce. He has less gas and less fussiness because of it...do you wait until the end of the bottle to burp him? Try taking a few breaks and see what happens. Good luck. A gassy baby is never fun.:(

Personally, I think the Dr. Browns bottles are the *best* for gas problems. We tried several differnt types of bottles and finally settled on these. Also, the nipple flow was perfect for our guys, all the others seemed okay for a day or two, but then the flow was either too fast or too slow.

Burping our little Nate has always been difficult, and we end up bouncing him on our knee and patting his back at the same time.

I hear Dr Browns are the best ones for reduction of air...

That's so funny I was just going to ask:

Playtex or Dr. Brown's?

Also, do any of you think that we should buy the pre-made formula....maybe it'll have less bubbles?????

Playtex nursers all the way! I've heard Dr. Browns are so hard to clean. the nursers are awesome! Just squeeze the air out and your ready to go. They helped with Andrew's gas and colic so much and the disposable bags are awesome!

Woohooo, thanks!!

Now does anyone find a difference between the pre-made ready to serve vs. the powder?? I'm wondering if I should try that???

Does that make a difference with gas issues??? My poor little guy, I felt so bad for him last night, I held him for hours......and this morning he looked so traumatized.......:(

I've heard putting a drop of Mylicon into the bottle before giving it can reduce the bubbles in the formula. If you switch to ready-made formula, be forewarned you may not be able to switch back as easily (apparently many babies come to prefer the taste of the ready-to-eat stuff) and it's quite expensive, in addition to not being available as a generic.

DS has gas with Avent too--Dr Browns are the way to go. Still using then 7 months later!

We use Dr. Browns and DD has never had a problem with gas. They are a Pain (with a capital P!) to clean. I use 3 brushes to get these bottles thoroughly cleaned. Wasn't so bad when DD had a bottle once in awhile but now that she's in daycare and takes bottles everyday...OY!

It is worth it though because she's done well on them. :)

Oh wow thanks!!!!!!!!

I've been giving him his drops just prior to each feeding, and it seems to be hleping.......

A friend of mine just suggesting mixing the formula with boiling water, then letting it cool in fridge(rather than mixing it at room temp just prior to feedings) she says it breaks down the formula better-making it easier to digest.

Maybe that'll help?

I agree I think I won't get the pre-made stuff, for that very reason : )

You can add a little bit of mylicon to the formula as well...that might help with the gas

Okay, I'm obsessing!!

How long should we give the new bottles before we try new formula?? I really can't bare DS suffering the way he does :(
