I was looking through Baby Name Books last night and I looked up a few of the names I liked and one in particular had what I thought to be a silly meaning. Now I think that I wouldn't use the name because of the meaning :p Did anyone have this happen or if you like the name did you care what the meaning was?

I think what a name means is important. I would probably not choose a certain name if I didn't like what it meant. I would have to love it A LOT to not care. Even then...

kind of... DH never liked it anyway, but I changed my mind too when I found out that Mallory meant "unhappy one."

Pixie, I used to love the name Mallory too. The name book I read defined it as "bitter". I didn't like it so much after that. It's a bummer too cause it's such a pretty sounding name.

Whew! DH thought I was a "weirdo" because of this  My name is Elizabeth and I always loved the meaning of my name. I want my child to have a name with a powerful meaning not one that means "flirtatious."

I just can't say because I wouldn't want anyone to get mad!! But I'll hint...it's a popular name for a girl and it begins with an "A" :D

I've thought about it. One of my favorite names, Brendan, means "little raven." Well my husband had very blond hair as a kid so if this kid comes out with blond hair it seems like it would be silly to pick a name that means "little raven." But I do like the name so I can't decide if that would stop me from using it.

For me, name meaning is just as important as the name itself. 99% of the names on our list have meanings that fit what kind of person we hope our child will be or are special to us in some way . It may sound silly, but hey I was even picky with the meaning of our dog's names :)

Huh. I used to like Mallory and Claudia too. How unfortunate that such beautiful names have sad meanings.
Pouts.

I wouldn't change my mind if it were the meaning in the way you're talking about, those meanings are...meaningless in the present day. I'm not superstitious and don't believe that just because a name is a variation of a word that meant something 2000 years ago, it will affect a person's personality or success. However, if I learned that the name was well known for something specific and bad or undesireable, then I would change. I have really bad luck with that too - like in college I played a MUD and chose a russian name - Daria, without knowing it was an MTV show, and everyone thought that's why I chose it :( I think the worst example is seeing the name Charon - I did a double take the first time I saw that used for a little girl, don't they know Charon ferries souls across the river Styx in the underworld in Greek mythology? Everyone should google their child's potential name before using it, just in case.

Funny DH and I were in the store the other night and he happened to pick up a name meaning book and looked up our name. We found out it meant "fiery", when I googled it all I remember reading about it was that it was a strong Irish name and became popular because of an Irish Monk. At this point (9 months preg) I am completly in love with the name and have been calling my belly Aidan for months now so I won't change it, and I don't believe that just because my son's name means fiery that he will be "fiery"
