I did NOT make these - my dd just received them as a birthday gift - Fabric Paper Dolls. I'm posting them since I thought they were cute - and I thought that other people may want to make some. I'm thinking I'm going to make a couple sets to give out as birthday or Christmas gifts for DD's friends.

They seem pretty simple to make. The doll has some type of stiff material on the inside - probably a thin piece of cardboard - with a thin layer of batting over it. The face is just painted on. And it is just a piece of velcro in the center to hold the clothes on. The doll also is fabric on the back.

All the clothes are just sewn onto a thick piece of interfacing, with another piece of velcro. I'm onlyh posting some of the outfits my dd received. I think it came with about 15 outfits. If anyone wants to see more outfits - let me know. Or if you want more detailed info on how the stuff was made.

Here's teh doll:

pixielou -- I love those!! What a neat idea!! That'd be a perfect Christmas present for my cousin's daughter. I'd love to get more information on how they're made. If it's not too much trouble, would you take a picture of the back of one of the outfits? I'm just curious to see what it looks like (how it's made). Thanks so much for posting that!

vjel: LOVE those dresses and the fabrics! SO cute!

I made my dresses with a pattern by Children's Corner (www.childrenscorner.com), the pattern name is Lucy. It is SOOOO super easy to put together!

these are the dresses she is just growing into. i've learned the "danger" of sewing things so far in advance - dd is tall and thin. if i had known that, i would have made these dresses a couple inches longer. luckily at 3 years old, you can get away with short dresses!

They would look cute with a long sleeve shirt underneath and jeans!

tgray, I missed your post earlier. Thank you and thanks so much for the pattern info!

kindermom, thank you, I like me some pretty fabric! BUT I can't take much credit in this instance b/c my LJ buddies picked their fabric and the fabric designer makes it really easy to coordinate. I just sewed it all together. :)

Anyway, the fabric I used is from Joel Dewberry's Aviary Line (http://joeldewberry.com/Aviary.html). He is a relatively new designer to the fabric industry. I actually bought the fabric thru a co-op on Sewing Mamas (http://sewingmamas.com) but you can go here (http://joeldewberry.com/WhereToBuy.html) to find stores/online retailers for his fabric or ebay has it too.

HTH! :)

ladyjg here are more photos. if you have more questions, you can just pm me.

here is the doll - front and back. it appears that the edges were serged. it looks like the hair was hand stitched on. the hair is just yarn - i'm not sure exactly what they did to get it look so curly, but the hair was made, then attached with needle and thread.

front of doll (again - so you don't have to flip back)
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/paperdolls002.jpg?t=1194387189

and back of doll
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/dollbacks.jpg?t=1194387316

and here is the rain slicker. it's just a straight stitch - to attach the fabric to the interfacing. then it is just trimmed close to the seam. the velcro was attached to the interfacing before the fabric was attached. all the detailing was done after teh fabric was sewed to the interfacing.

front of slicker
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/paperdolls003.jpg?t=1194387459

back of slicker
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/dollbacks1.jpg?t=1194387505

and here is the doll in the slicker. note that the hat is 2 pieces sewn together, so the hat goes over the dolls head.

here are some jackets i made for my dd.

this is the one she wore 2 winters ago. this pattern - the sleeves were a bit long.
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/COAT1.jpg?t=1194387718

this is her jacket from last winter. this pattern the sleeves were a bit short!
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/clothes/COAT.jpg?t=1194387774

even though the orange alphabet coat still fits, i'm going to make another one this year in the same size. i have a pink reindeer print fleece that i'm planning on using. and i'll just lengthen the sleeves. and i think i'm going to put a collar on instead of the hood. this pattern doesn't come with a collar, but i think i can wing it if i use the collar pattern off the striped coat and just adjust the size. if it comes out lousy - well, it's only a 3 year old wearing it outside to play!

No pattern-they were just circles with a hole in the center and a cut right down the front. I added the fur trim to the opening in the front and to make it fit better and look fuller, I made a giant pleat in the back before adding the fur trim to the collar.

The fur trim was a b*tch to put through my serger!

Novice sewer here. I'm having the hardest time finding a tablecloth for my large square dining room table, so I've decided my best bet would be to make one. I know I'll probably have to piece two pieces of fabric together, but from there do I just hem the edges and call it a day? What kind of fabric should I use? I don't want it to look too plain and cheap, but I'm afraid my skillset is not up to par. Any advice is appreciated!

Hangin'in
11-21-2007, 09:35 AM
emjay yes, that's really all there is to it..... EXCEPT, to make sure you don't look like a novice seamtress, make sure when you put your 2 pieces of fabric together, you don't have a center seam going down the middle of your table cloth. If you have, for example, 2 3yard lengths that are both 54" wide, take one of those 3 yard lengths, and cut it down the middle the full 3 yard length so you have 1 3 yard length that is 54" wide, and 2 3 yard lengths that are 27" wide. You would then sew 1 27" wide length to each side of the 54" wide length, and cut your square for your table cloth from there, then proceed to hem it up...... my measurements are not what you would use..... I just used those numbers for example. If you need help with that, give me your table measurement, and I can help you with the fabric amounts.

Hope that did not confuse you.....

You can make a table cloth out of just about any type of fabric.... depends on the look you are going for.

emjay
11-21-2007, 08:41 PM
Thanks Hangin'in. That makes sense that I wouldn't want the seam right down the middle. My table is 54" x 54" square. I read somewhere that I would want about 10" to 12" overhang. Do they make fabric this wide? I am going for a casual, yet elegant look. I do however, want a fabric that is pretty easy to sew. ;) Any suggestions?

I bought some from www.supercrafty.com but wound up selling them on Ebay because they're primarily for knits instead of wovens and I'm sort of afraid of knits...I also don't have a serger.

pixielou
11-24-2007, 01:08 PM
emjay they do make fabric up to (i think) 108" wide - but the selection is pretty limited. another option may be to look at flat bed sheets - you'd have to double check the dimensions to see which size you would need.

i finished the sleeping pants for my dd (3 yo) yesterday. my hope is that she will take naps in these with her shirt - she has always insisted on changing in to pj's for naps, which is a major pain in the butt. so these have been billed as extra special nap pants.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/pixielou_house/misc%20photos%20-%20for%20cc/topost003.jpg?t=1195934653

(yes - i did use white thread on the pink pants. i didn't have any hot pink thread lieing around, and there was no way i was going to make a quick trip to joann's on black friday - just for pink thread)

-Another Wee Wonderfuls Pattern, a cat (http://weewonderfuls.typepad.com/wee_wonderfuls/store/pointykitty.html) I still need to sew on the eyes as well.
-Hair Barrettes (http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2007/06/this_house_is_w.html)
-Clothes Pin Dolls & pouch (http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2006/11/party_season.html)

I plan to make:
-an apron (http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2007/06/tie_one_on_the_.html)
-Felt Fruit, Veggies, and Donuts

I am going crazy making things here, can't you tell? ;)

I haven't looked at this thread to be completely honest. Just looking for some input into how completely easy or difficult this task might be. And tips or hints will be extremely useful to me. TIA! My DH has this body pillow that he uses and it's sometimes difficult to find the pillow cases for it. In any event, I was thinking of getting some material with the football team he likes on it and make him a pillowcase. I am envisioning this will be easy as I made a couple of those hide and seek pillows over the summer...I'm assuming it would be just as easy.

I guess I'm looking for any hints or pointers you might have for me. TIA!

Embroider face on big-footed bunny and sew on tail for DD
Patch-work quilt for DD from this tutorial: http://happythings.typepad.com/happythings/2006/10/tutorial_chenil.html
Some felt softies from Wee Wonderfuls patterns

(I think I've posted about the Wee Wonderfuls patterns before, but I wouldn't advise buying them. I'm really not sure they were worth the moola. I found the instructions quite lacking.)

Oh, and I found a great book on biblical quilt blocks that I'm asking for from DH for Christmas. Actually the author has two books out and I can't decide which one I want. http://www.amazon.com/More-Biblical-Quilt-Blocks-Inspirational/dp/156477581X

Katmg About WeeWonderfuls patterns, I agree that the instructions are lacking but the ones Ive bought have more detailed instructions than the free ones have. I made the doll with no issues at all. I had more issues making the free cat pattern because it took me awhile to figure out the instructions.

Yeah, I made the pointy kitty and the bunny. But I also bought the big-footed bunny and a grouping of 4 felt animals. I was disappointed that the patterns I bought didn't have things like grain direction, pattern layout, etc. I figured it out but little things like that do make a big difference in how well and how easy it is to put together.

i'm almost embarassed to say that my dd has 3 of them. and she practically lives in them. she usually has 1 on - minimum. and she usually has her favorite stuffed animal of the day in 1 as well. whenever she has friends over, the first thing the little girls do is put on tutu's.

Anyone know who has a really good deal on a serger? Does Hobby Lobby have them (and could I use the 40% off coupon?), or would I do better at a different kind of store? I'm tired of putting french seams on everything, but I don't want to spend too much, either.

Make sure you prewash the fabric. Actually, before you prewash, zig-zag the edges so they don't unravel, then prewash and dry. Sounds like you'll have lots of triangular shapes to cut out - shouldn't be too bad. Good luck!

I may make something for my mom with the yellow one--it's her favorite color. They were too cute, I bought them all without a definite plan for what I'd do with them. :)

I've heard good things about fabric.com but have not bought any yet.

purlsoho.com (http://www.purlsoho.com) and reprodepot.com (http://www.reprodepot.com) are good places to get fabric that you won't find in chain stores.

I've bought some from www.fabric.com, a local sewing shop that has an online component (www.sweettreasures.com) and from Ebay and from Hancock's and www.fatquartershop.com

I know the qualities of fabrics like Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, Michael Miller so I have no problems buying sight unseen. I usually buy online unless I need to match colors.

Sophia, that apron is adorable. Did you use a pattern or did you wing it?

Sophia

I just winged it. Well, actually I made a pattern myself with gift wrapping tissue first, but that was winged.

I found the material I love in a laminated version. So I can do what I really want to do which is reupholster my dining room seats with something child friendly! And it comes in another color that would look awesome in my bathroom. So yes, the big dork that I am I will have one color in my dining room and another color in my bathroom. I guess this is why all the rooms in my house are also painted shades of green and blue. I am such not a color wiz.

Thanks for your help ladies!

Nope, no pattern. If you cut the fabric on the fold, you really only need to make the arm cuts - so, one angle and then straight down for the width. This one is extra wide to account for my mom having big birthing hips like me. :)

vjel and kat - ah, thanks for noticing my weight loss. I really need to get back to it, because I'd love to lose some more, but I've been slacking for about six months now. I've now told myself the first of the year for sure.

I have gotten a lot done and still have a lot left. I finished both aprons to get mailed off tomorrow. I have 5 crayon rolls done, 3 more to do. 1 nightgown done, 1 to do. 1 doll to do. Ugh. You think I can call into work, "Busy"? Nah, that probably wouldn't fly. I also finished Aidan's Christmas dress. Here she is in it on Sunday.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tgray99/31mo006.jpg

It's the Children's Corner "Lucy" pattern, red baby wale corduroy lined in green fabric with Christmas lights all over it. I appliqued Christmas lights and the cord onto it and used buttons that are white hearts with holly. I wished I could've found Christmas light buttons but I couldn't.

Wow - you're really good! I'm making my daughter's dress this weekend - similar pattern, but with scotty dog appliques - my first - I'm scared! :)

I looked around online for Christmas tree light buttons, and you're right - they're impossible to find! You might be able to find Christmas tree buttons - nice solid green ones (to go with the Christmas lights theme of the dress), or you could go for a round button in any of the primary colors - that would also be a nice balance for the large applique - that is, if you're looking for a substitution for the holly ones.

Again - wonderful job - she looks adorable!!!

What Pineknot said - ADORABLE.

Love the lining and the buttons - I'm a bit of a button-a-holic - I don't have a ton, but I loooove finding just the right ones. I knit a sweater for my daughter's birthday trip to Newport last year and found the perfect little pale blue sailboat buttons - they made the sweater very special to me!

Actually, quilting cotton is a specific weave and weight. It's fairly crisp compared to, say, cotton shirting. I don't quilt, but I'm assuming this is so you get a nice, even quilt with it. But that doesn't mean you can't make clothes out of it! :) It's great for a summer skirt.

Lately I've been working on jeans. This is my wearable muslin. The fit needs to be tweaked and the center front got off somewhere along the line. They're not too bad for a first pass, though!

amorey - those look great for a first try, I'm very impressed. :)

This bag shall be dubbed "meet the seam ripper". Ugh, it took so much out of me today, lol, perhaps I'm just tired but so many little things went wrong, which required the seam ripper. I did try something a little different with the closure on top. Not sure what I think of it totally. I need to find my mending kit that is upstairs (sewing room in the basement) so that I can sew on the pink button. I'm too tired to deal with it tonight though!

I have another bag all ready and cut out. The next one, I'm going to add some interior pockets for things like cell phones. This one doesn't have any bells and whistles. I think this will be gifted.

Last night I made a skirt with this tutorial (http://neverenoughhours.blogspot.com/2007/12/easy-skirt-tutorial.html) and embellished a long-sleeved t-shirt to go with it. It was about 2am when I finished and it's already wrapped so there aren't any pics.

Now I'm working on a doll for Aidan. I have the arms, legs and body stuffed and the face embroidered. I have to sew the head together, put the hair on, attach the head and then make her some clothes. She's a little wonky looking but I think Aidan will like her. She's definitely more comfortable to sleep with than her plastic doll that she has now. I'll take pics when I finish her. I gotta get done because I haven't packed and we fly out tomorrow morning (leaving here at 4am...which is what time I went to bed last night!)

it is indeed girly style. it can be hard to find but a seller has it on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/GIRLY-STYLE-WARDROBE-Japanese-Dress-Pattern-Book_W0QQitemZ170183205433QQihZ007QQcategoryZ11801 QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem) right now, but for more $$ than you can find at other places. i found it on yesasia.com, just search for girly style wardrobe. a lot of japanese books on there but it can be hard to search since some titles are not translated, but if you know the ISBN it's easier to match up book to book.

vjel - thanks! the diagrams are pretty straight forward...but for a beginner like me, some parts were harder than others. what was intimidating was the patterns. all 27 patterns are on the same sheet with lines, letters, and numbers overlapping everywhere. but once you get your bearings, it's not bad. i did have to improvise the collar since i just couldn't figure out what they wanted me to do (and that's with my mom translating the little japanese she does know!). take the plunge! the dresses in there are so cute! i just ordered another girl's dress book as well as an apron book since my first try turned out so well!

yes, it is! :p I saw other cute V-day dish towels there too but may just wait til they go on clearance to get more. They'd make great gifts for the future, I think.

lisariv, up til a couple years ago, the only thing I used my machine for was hemming pants. Then we made some window treatments for our house and then I got it in my head that I wanted to make stuff for my dd. I just looked for patterns online or at JoAnns, bought a couple and went from there. You can just dive right in or try a sewing class if you want to really learn to sew?

Need help with lambs wool! My friend gave me a very wide lambs wool scarf that she won't wear because it is too wide. So she wants me to cut it in half and make two scarves out of it. I am so nervous, because I don't want to ruin what I imagine is a pricey scarf. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this - or should I NOT do it due to the fabric.

FYI, the lambs wool is kind of like flannel, it's not a knit scarf. However, the edges are not hemmed currently, and the ends of the scarf have fringe. So will the edges fray once they are cut, and will the fringe be ruined?

Alioop, LOVE the bedding. I made my DD's bedding 3 years ago, and chose the gender neutral circus toile so it could work for future kids. But when my son was born, I really just wanted to make another set for him. Seeing your bedding really makes me want to sew another set!

I too grew up with the constant hum of a sewing machine, but I never learned how. I just got my mom's old machine and really want to start learning. I am searching for a pattern to make jon-jons for DS. It's hard to find anything for baby boys. Any ideas?

I took a Sewing 101 class last Saturday and I loved it. I made a pillow with an invisible zipper and I am now hooked.

My next 2 projects are going to be a 2nd pillow and some flannel pj pants. I will post my pillow pictures tonight as I am too proud.

I have some projects almost finished (4 actually...geez, I gotta finish something!)

- a pair of pajama pants from Amy Butler's In Stitches book, made out of a vintage sheet from Goodwill (all I'm lacking is making the drawstring)
- a pink pleated embroidered babywale corduroy skirt for Aidan (I need to hem it)
- an Easter/spring a-line sundress (I want it to be reversible but I'm having issues figuring out how to hem it so it sits unfinished on my sewing table).
- Aidan's quilt (it needs to be bound, it's been quilted for a while now!)

I have other projects I want to get made, the Amy Butler "Anna Tunic" for me, a couple of skirts for myself, and some fun little things out of some vintage textiles I found.

Any ideas how to make something out of either one of these?

I'm looking for a recommendation for a sewing machine as I am totally overwhelmed by the number of choices out there. I am a beginner, but I am looking for a machine I can really grow into, since I take my craft arts pretty seriously. I'm hoping to find a high-quality machine without a ton of unnecessary bells and whistles, something in the $500-$700 range. I plan on using the machine to make clothing.

TIA!

Well I just bought a refurbished Brother XR 7700 Computerized sewing machine from Overstock.com and I LOVE IT! It works so nicely - the computerized feature is so nice. It also can run without the foot pedal attachment - you can just press a button and it goes (slow, medium, fast). Or you can use the foot attachment. It has automatic thread bobbin winding and an automatic threader, etc.. it's awesome.

And it's a $500 machine retail, but at overstock it's $139 because it's refurbished. But honestly, as a beginner myself (or a beginner who hasn't sewn since high school) it works SO well. I'm so excited to use it. I sat down on a Friday afternoon, figured out how to thread the bobbin and thread the machine and by Saturday afternoon I'd made TWO dresses.

Not bad, eh?

ETA: Now I'm on this kick of refurbishing old clothes. I have some kimono sweaters and such from target that I want to change up, so I am redesigning them. I also have this cute black cardigan that I'm going to convert into a top that looks like this one (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml;jsessionid=VMK2L0UJBQTZKCQAAKIRACA?item Id=prod50150072&parentId=cat5410732&index=5&cmCat=cat000000cat000001cat000009cat000019cat54107 32) from Valentino Roma... so excited!

charmcity, DH got me the Brother 1034D Serger (online from walmart). Reasonably priced and great reviews. I'm totally new to the serging world and am still learning how the heck to use it properly.

I got my 2 Japanese sewing books yesterday. They're a bit intimidating but I'm hoping to tackle something in one of those books soon.

I want so badly to sew, but everytime I try I can't get my machine to work properly. the tension on the bobbin is way too loose and I've tried EVERYTHING and read the book 3 times, got my mom to look at it and taken it to a repair shop. It worked fine for a while and for my mom, but I just can't get it to tighten up any, no matter how much I change the tension on that and/or the needle. try different threads, bobbins, everything. I've spent hours and hours and hours, literally, trying to make it work and I'm so frustrated.
Maybe this goes in the emotional support thread, I'm just so upset right now because I used to be able to sew on my mom's machine and for whatever reason I can't figure out this simple machine. DH is disappointed because he bought it for me 2 years ago and I have sewn one thing... then the next time I got it out I had this problem. I just don't get it!
I just want to throw it out the window. I think I am going to just give it away

jennylou
02-24-2008, 02:18 PM
jenji - Do you have a drop in bobbin? I ask b/c I do on my current machine and had never used a drop in bobbin machine before. It's very important that when you put the bobbin thread in a drop in machine, you thread it ever so carefully. It has to catch in just the right spot - or else your stitches will be completely off (and I thought it was my tension as well). I was to the point that you are when I finally sat down and figured I NEEDED to figure out the $300 machine that I was ready to throw out the window or I was going to pull my hair out and DH wasn't happy either.

Hangin'in
02-25-2008, 07:32 AM
You also have to make sure that the actual bobbin itself is one designed for your machine.... not all bobbins are universal, and even some of the ones that say they are don't work very well in some machines they claim to work in. It sounds like a bobbin issue, not a tension issue.

You might also check and make sure it is threaded EXACTLY correct. Sometimes missing 1 thing will throw off the entire stitch. You might also turn your spool of thread upside down. Some machines like the thread to come off the spool from the top, and some do better when the thread comes off the spool from the bottom.... although it shouldn't matter!

littlecindy

did you check the tension on the bobbin too?

Just as a general rule, I've found that if you're curvy like me (12+ inches difference between hip, waist, and bust), Vogue brand patterns seem to be the most suitable of the major manufacturers you can get at the fabric store. Some people don't like their instructions/techniques, and they're also the priciest, but they do go on sale.

Has anyone in here taken classes at JoAnn before? I have made a couple things using a very, very old machine that I borrowed from MIL but it was frustrating because I didn't know how to properly use the machine (couldn't get the tension right, etc.). I would like to take a class so that I can figure out if there are any problems with the machine or if it was just user error on my part before I purchase a new machine.

I see that JoAnn has a sewing machine basics class and also some classes that focus on one project (tote bag, window treatment, etc.). Do you think the project-specific classes also go over how to use the machine properly or do they assume that you already know?

I love your creations Vjel - your DD has a great wardrobe!

This sounds like the problem jenji is having.

I am working on my diapers. Things are going great, until I went to sew the velcro .... then the bobbin stitches kept getting messed up. It's like the machine isn't moving fast enough for the speed the thread is coming out. The thread is looping and loose and blah!

I am pretty sure it has something to do with the tension? But I tried changing it, didn't make a difference, and tried changing it back and it still messed?

diam, I've never taken a class at Jo-anns but I would assume that if you're making a project specific class, you already have basic sewing down. So maybe the basic sewing class is better suited for you? You may just want to call and ask them, too.

Thanks also for the compliment on dd's wardrobe. :)

lil geek, I've sewn velcro before and never really had problems. Since it is so thick though, you may have to help it thru the feeder by pulling from behind (and pushing it thru from the front) so that it doesn't get stuck and goes thru more easily. Does that make sense?

Yup, the issue is I am now just sewing fabric.

I was able to rethread the bobbin and it ran one test strip fine...... then I tried on my diaper again, and now the TOP thread is getting jammed in the bobbin!

Arg, I need to dig out my manual!

lil_geek
03-07-2008, 07:09 AM
I dug out the manual.... and was reading and think I figured out why.

I needed to clean the bobbin shuttle. According to my manual is should be done every few months (when the machine is in use or not!) and I had never done it. Apparently any build up of dust/lint can cause things to go whacky.

Took it all apart, blew on it, back together and it has been running great!

So, here is my finished diaper!!!

I think it turned out really well!!!

I made the pattern myself based on these little diapers I borrowed from a friend- and a medium sized fitted I bought from dry bees to get the size. I used a prefold (tri folded) for the stuffing.. it is a little bulky. I think for the others I may use the thick portion of the prefold and then wrap the entire thing in a microfiber cloth.

I also may make the back portion of the wings (top in the photo) a little wider near the leg, to give a bit more butt coverage...
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8dd24b3127cceb5b55a14025400000026100QZNWjZo3bsT

It is still a little big (which is good cause she can grow into them), the front tabs want to overlap and the leg isn't quite tight enough. I also think I wil need the next size up cover.

As far as sewing machines go, I saw there was a recomendation for a $80 brother sewing machine, does anyone have any new recomendations for someone just starting out?

Pattern question!:

Has anyone widened a pattern for a kid's romper? Or I guess anything that has arm holes? I'm making McCall's 2033 for my two boys for Easter, but I need to add at least an inch in the chest for my older son (the pattern only goes to a 4, he's a 4 in length, but a 5/6 in chest. I've already added an inch for the length (crotch area). How do I accomdate arm holes when adding to the chest?

I think I would slash the pattern at center front and spread until I had the required increase. You don't want the extra width all the way down, so taper it away toward the crotch. You should probably do half the required amount on the front and then do the other half on the back, in order to keep the side seams in the right spot and the shoulder straps matching up. I don't think you need to do anything to the armholes if you use this method.

In future, I think shortening a 5/6 pattern is easier than widening a 4. All you'd have to do in that case would be to fold up a tuck in the pattern at the waist, front and back.

Thanks so much. It ended up working out by just decreasing the seams a bit (from 5/8 to 1/2). I was thinking of doing your suggestion, but panicked, sewed up what I had and it ended up working.

Normally I would just have shortened the 5/6, but see, the pattern only goes to a 4 and well, I'm stubborn! LOL! I really wanted both kids in the same pattern and this was the only romper pattern that I could find. I've used it for years and my mom used it 30 years ago for my brother and me, so it's a great pattern, super easy and rather idiot proof.

Now, if anyone has great young boy patterns they want to share, I'd love it! I'm a traditionalist though and like little boys under 5 to be in romper type outfits (think john-johns and bubbles) rather than pants and ties and such. ;)

I'm attempting to make crib bedding from Simplicity pattern 4504 (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4504). The pattern calls for 54" wide fabric, but the fabric I have my heart set for the bumper is only 44". Will this be a major problem? It appears that the panels for the long sides of the bumper are cut from selvage to selvage on 54" fabric, but could I just cut them long-ways on 44" fabric? (Hope that makes sense!) I'm somewhat new to sewing so any help is appreciated!

katmg
04-04-2008, 08:41 AM
emjay - I'm no sewing expert either but if you cut the long sides of the bumper that way, you'd need to do the short sides that way as well, otherwise your pattern will be running different directions on the different sides. Also you might run into issues with the fabric stretching funny since you wouldn't be cutting with the grain. Just two thoughts off the top of my head.

thyme
04-04-2008, 09:39 AM
Yes, you can lay it out that way. As katmg said, you ought to lay out the shorter pieces the same way. The grain shouldn't be a problem; you're not going from straight to bias or vice versa. Good luck!

Also, if you're going to cut it out that direction, make sure your pre wash and dry the fabric. That is the direction that fabric tends to shrink..... and if you don't wash and dry it first, it might end up being too short aft you wash it. I actually pre wash and dry all of my fabric, even lining fabrics, just to make sure they don't shrink after they are made.

I was wondering if someone can help me out here. I have always been a beginner when it comes to sewing and have never expanded upon that. I can do the basics and figure out how to sew from the easier patterns. Well, I bought the japanese books and have everything cut out and a friend of mine whose husband has a business employed a professional seamstress to work form them made a comment about using a serger to finish edges. Can someone tell me what the heck she is talking about? Looking at store bought items I noticed the raw edges of the fabric are stitched and there is a special hem, is that what the serger does? And lastly, is this necessary. If I make dd clothes without doing this will my fabric frey to the point where I'll only get a few washes out of it? TIA for all your info and advice!

vjel
04-12-2008, 08:39 AM
tgal, yes, a serger kinda "encases" the raw edges to prevent fraying and give it a professional look. A serger can do other stuff too but that's one of the basic functions. Is it necessary? No, not if you're going to make stuff for your dd and have no intention of selling your stuff. I have a serger now but when I started sewing stuff for DD, I didn't. To prevent fraying or to keep from fraying more, I suggest you use pinking shears to cut down your seam allowance after sewing. It definitely helps. I've also done french seams, a bit more work but very clean looking! Here's a tut I used: http://stardustshoes.blogspot.com/2007/08/sewing-101-french-seam.html

I have never worked with a pattern before, are they easy to follow? I'm so intrigued by some of these beautiful bags I've seen lately!

Has anyone ever used Amy Butler fabrics? How is the quality? More of a lightweight or midweight hand?

I'm thinking about upgrading my sewing machine for something with more bells and whistles. Does anybody have a machine that does embroidery, like the ability to embroider names and words or designs? Any recs?

TIA!

I think patterns can be easy to follow, kinda depends what it is I guess and how simple or complicated the item you want to make is. But generally the instructions that come w/ the pattern do a decent job of explaining what needs to be done and there's usually a glossary of terms in there as well.

I've used Amy Butler fabrics. They are great quilting weight cottons, wash and wear well. They are great for making anything really! I'm currently using her fabrics from her latest line to make the same bag I posted a couple weeks ago (which btw is NOT a pattern I recommend for the faint at heart, lol).

I wish I had an embroidery machine but they are kinda $$$ and I don't need another machine. :p I think there's a combo sewing/embroidery machine (Disney related???) out there that others might have (emschwar comes to mind but my memory is not always so good). That might be something to look into. Otherwise a separate embroidery machine can cost close to 1k.

patterns - some are super easy. some of them I'm left scratching my head, well, at the directions at least, the patterns themselves are usually easy to lay and cut out. ;)

krbb - Oooh. I want to see pictures! I finished the crib skirt over the weekend (I'll post pics tonight if I remember) and I'm starting on the bumper soon. I was reading the directions for it last night and I may need a little guidance! I'm glad you said the window shades were the easiest, because I really want to make those, but they look complicated.

Anyone else working on anything or have finished projects to share???

I finished some things in the last few weeks and getting ready to start some other stuff, just haven't decided what yet.

I made another Amy Butler Weekender bag, this one for my sister's b-day. I love the fabric combo and really wanted to keep this for myself, lol. :p

capes for my kids. I just winged the pattern. My dd actually gave me the idea on how to make it. Before capes, she was turning her apron around backwards and using that as a cape. Since her lil brother needed a cape too, she would turn his bib around and voila, instant cape. lol So basically I made a big ginormous backwards bib!

and a top for dd. I'm getting ready to make a dress like this for her next.

thanks everyone!

Katie&Micah, I buy fabric thru a couple fabric co-ops I belong to, various online stores, JoAnns occassionally and moms on Sewing Mamas (http://www.sewingmamas.com). I get sucked in to all the "designer" fabrics (ie. Michael Miller, Amy Butler, Alexander Henry, etc, etc.), lol. Between the co-ops and Sewing Mamas, I am fairly clued in to what lines will be coming out and if I like them, I buy. I've become a bit of a fabric hoarder, lol.

I don't think it would be too difficult. Just go slow and take your time figuring things out. And do one up for practice using cheap fabric. The pattern I used I bought from a mom on Sewing Mamas; she drafted the pattern herself. It's available on Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/search_results_seller.php?search_type=seller_usern ames&search_query=thatdarnkat). But it's kinda $$ if you're just a beginner. Mccalls has a similar pattern and I think it is/was on sale for 99 cents at Hancocks. Mccall 5568 (http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5568.htm?search=5568&page=1)

Vjel...I always look forward to your project pictures. You really are creative!

I want so badly to make that bag, but I'm just afraid it's going to be a major headache. I would say I'm not a beginner, but a pretty advanced beginner/intermediate sewer. Too much of a headache for my skills?

thanks so much! :)

I consider myself the same sewing level actually so I definitely think you could do it. Really the first step is overcoming the fear of making this bag. I read EVERY review I could find and it's hard to not be intimidated by the whole project. I think the key is to take your time with it and work on it a little at a time. It's so time consuming, sometimes tedious, sometimes frustrating, painful (oh the pin pricks!). I would work on it 2-3hrs at a time, stopping at the end of each stage. Honestly, the hardest part is sewing the bag together. Everything up to that point is fairly easy.

I say go for it! :) I could offer some tips/advice and you can always PM me if you have questions.

I actually tried to log the hours I put into this bag this go around and it came up to roughly 20hours over a 2 week time period. Way more time (and $$$)than I'd normally spend on a project!

Creative Tip:

I am slowly cleaning out my craft area, and remembered a tip I wanted to post. I was making curtains for our den (panels, nothing fabulous!) and had to rip out a seam. One of the things I hate about having to rip out seams or sewing with tapestry are the millions of little threads. I just so happened to have a lint roller (the sticky tape kind) on the table and thought "A-HA". I just rolled the lint roller over the areas where there were little threads, and they came off with no hassle! I then rolled all the curtains when they were hung to get any threads I'd forgotten.

Thought I'd pass it along. :)

There have been some amazing projects posted on this thread, and mine is no where close to being as well made, or cute as the projects before me, but it is my first attempt at a "real" article of clothing. It is still super simple though as it is only my 3rd or 4th attempt at sewing anything

I made myself a cute lil tunic. This wont see the light of day outside of our house, but will be nice for laying around the house during the summer months.

Its okay, (I think) Because at Joann's it is one of the butterick patterns that are 5.99 everyday!

I don't know if that is every Joann's but the one local to me has certian butterick pattern's that are always 5.99. That sentence was prob redundent.

Sorry ladies, I wasn't allowed to post that here. I didn't realize and I found a buyer over on LJ. Since I carry diaper bags everywhere I go, I wanted to buy the new laptop and ipod pattern. I selected the wrong item on ebay from the seller and they don't accept returns. Oh well, my other patterns were correct and I finished the Amy Butler swing bags that I made for Eva's preschool teachers. They were super easy with exception that I added a little sentimental touch to the inside of the bag, an idea taken from "everythingispink" blog. Here are a couple pictures. Each kid in the class picked out fabric and I had their names embroidered on it.

Great shades!

I just bought material to cover store-bought roman shades. It's a cotton fabric. Should I wash it before I sew it?

sewhappy
06-06-2008, 06:33 AM
Hula - I can't even think what Roman blinds look like right now, but they aren't something you throw in the washer, right? Basically, you want to wash something in warm/hot water if you think it might shrink. If the only washing you'll be doing after construction is dabbing at it with a sponge, you're probably fine to skip the pre-washing. On the other hand, throwing it in the washer is pretty easy to do. If you pre-wash cotton be sure to zig-zag the raw edges to prevent fraying.

sewhappy, great job, everything is adorable!!!

I've made the trapeze top as well, did you find it to be super wide? Since you didn't do the ruffle bottom, did you just account for the length in the main body? I plan to make it again at some point since my dd already outgrew the one I made her before she ever even wore it. :(

sewhappy
06-06-2008, 08:39 PM
Thank you all so much for the sweet compliments on my daughter and her new wardrobe!

vjel - I forgot to mention this "alteration" in my review on PR, but yes, I did lengthen the top. I want to say I made size 100 and lengthed it to size 120 (two sizes bigger), but I'd have to check my pattern pieces.

If you find it too wide (I don't mind the trapeze shape - it looks very Japanese to me, which I find appealing) - I would suggest starting your tracing at the top of the pattern at the correct size, and then grading the side down to meet a smaller size. Hm, that's about as unclear as I've ever been. What I mean is, if you start at say, size 140, then as you're tracing the side seam, see if you can blend it into a smaller size - 130, maybe even 120 - I'd have to see how drastic that would be. You could also try shaving some off the center, since it's cut on the fold. Just make sure you extend the side line down to the "big" size, or it'll be too short. Good luck! I just love this pattern book, and already have more patterns picked out!

tgal
06-09-2008, 06:23 PM
sewhappy: Awesome job! I have the same pattern book. I am freaking now though, what size US is your dd and what size did you use for the pattern? I thought they looked big when I first bought the book and cut them out already, but have yet so sew! Just wondering if I might be SOL with everything I cut awhile back. I really need to get these things sewn !

vjel
06-09-2008, 06:44 PM
tgal, at the time I made my dd's top, she was in a size 3 going into 4. I made size 100 (she was around 39" tall) and prob should've gone up to 110 at least. It was too exact bordering on short when I made it. My dd has a long torso too. Next time I'll just have to lay a shirt she wears on the pattern and see how it compares in size before cutting into anything. Tracing the stupid pattern is a headache in itself. Can't tell you how many times I started tracing the wrong lines. ugh.

tgal
06-12-2008, 10:04 AM
Ok, I should be OK. Eva is 36" and running a 3T, sometimes a 2T depending on how much it shrinks. I still need to get on this stuff. As for the patterns, not sure how much you would like this idea, but I bought a huge set of highlighters and highlighted the lines I needed. I figured I just use different colors everytime I use the pattern in a different size for for a different piece.

I'm a newbie who will be trying her hand at making a VERY simple dress for DD's 2nd birthday :) I got a pattern at JoAnn. It's a German company; B something (I forgot). The dress is pretty plain and I'm going to do a button in back instead of a zipper. I am going to ask my
