I'm going to be visiting DH in Kuala Lumpur for a week in February. I know nothing about the city (though I plan on reading up on it before going) except that it's where those two magnificent towers are. DH will be working during the day, so I'll be on my own a lot...any suggestions on what to do? Also, DH is a bit obsessive about my security -- he's there on Navy business, and I guess there have been some concerns...I'm a big-city kind of a girl, and I have good street smarts, but how safe is it?

You should be fine. I will say, my scariest experience ever was in KL - but it was 3AM at the bus station. I would advise against that ;) Other than that, if you are a city girl, I think you will be OK. Be very firm with taxi drivers about pricing and where you want to go, and NO TOURS. They'll try to take you on their own little tours, and to their friends' factories. Just say no.

That said, check out the towers, the shopping for sure, and there are some nice city and country tours you can take. I arranged those through the hotel. This isn't a day trip - but if you have time I would try to go south to singapore or north along the coast. KL itself is kinda just a city, in my opinion.

You might be able to do Malacca/Melaka as a day trip if you take an organized day tour (as opposed to just going on the bus). That is a much more interesting place than KL - it's an old port city that was ruled by the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British, and it has a lot of interesting architecture.

I wouldn't worry too much about safety - just use common sense and you will be fine!
