View Full Version : When did you first feel your baby move?

I think this was posted over "there", but I was looking for it here and couldn't find it. I'd like some reassurance.
I'm 18 wks pg today and I've felt flutters off and on, but not on a consistent basis whatsoever. I know some folks who are 15 wks and feel it regularly! It's my first PG so I guess I just need to be patient, huh? My morning sickness is gone and all I feel right now is FAT, so I am chomping at the bit to feel this kid move more! My next doc appt is July 12...hopefully to find out the sex! ;)

I felt the "flutters" at around 14 weeks and definite movement at around 20 weeks.
ETA: About consistency-I'm 35w now (gasp!) and there's still no consistency. He's definitely on his own time schedule! The only time for sure that I can count on feeling him move around is between 10:30 and 11:00 at night. I think he's a night owl like his mama!:)

I never felt flutters, but I felt "popcorn popping" on Mother's Day... 17 Weeks. It wasn't until about 20 - 22 that I actually felt her move on a daily basis :)

I thought I was feeling something in the evenings around 15 weeks or so but figured it was just digestion or something. Then at 17w6d, I got a good hard kick while I was eating my lunch and stopped mid-bite! From that moment on, I could feel kicks about every 4 hours (8, 12, 4, 8, 12). That's still the baby's most active times! I really wouldn't worry, every baby and every pregnancy can be so different! It is really an amazing thing when you do start feeling it!

I felt DD#1 around 16 weeks, so when week 19 passed me by and I still hadn't felt DD#2, I started to get nervous. During my 20 week u/s I found out that DD was lying transverse (sideways) across my belly with her back facing out and the placenta was on top of her back. No wonder. The day after my u/s I started feeling her and hasn't been a day that goes by that I haven't felt her.
I'm sure all is fine. She may just be positioned so that his/her kicks are muffled a bit.

I think I was between 18 and 19 weeks when I finally felt something that I could confidently say I thought was the baby. I heard about women feeling things weeks earlier, so this would have worried me, except that I knew my cousin didn't feel a single thing until after the 22 week mark. Everybody is different, and every baby is also different. On the "other place" a woman said she felt her first baby at 16 weeks, and even though you're supposed to feel the second much earlier, she didn't feel her second until 22 weeks.
I'm a bit beyond 22 weeks now, and I still don't feel anything very consistently. Some days are more active than others. I think finally I'm getting to the stage where I feel *something* every day, but often it's only a very faint something, once a day.

I didn't really *feel* her move until about 20-21 weeks. Even then, I wasn't convinced it was her moving. Believe me, you'll know it when you feel it! And don't worry, everyone's different! Congrats on your pregnancy! :)

I felt my first movement between 18-19 weeks. I felt it three times that day and then nothing again for a few days. Around 20 weeks you could feel the movement from ourside the belly. I am now at 34 week and you can see my belly move all over the place. There was a while there that our Peanut was consistently kicking me in the same place over and over again and I was convinced I was getting bruised as it was sore - the movement was definitely getting old for a couple of days during that phase.

I think it was around 20 weeks because I remember going to my 20 week ultrasound and saying that I wasn't sure if I had felt anything yet. However, when we looked the baby was laying breech and the placenta was very high, acting as a cushion. Now, at 32 weeks, I am just starting to feel some consistent movement but still no kicks. My doctor said that every pregnancy is different and there really isn't a "normal" to describe movement. I wish the baby was more active because I am constantly worried that something is wrong.

I felt the first movements at about 17w5d. It was not consistent at all. I would feel something one day and then not feel anything for 3 days. Now I am almost 22 weeks and I feel movements everyday. I dont think they are consistent, but I am feeling them at least a few times a day.

It took me a long time to be able to feel my baby too. I wasn't able to feel her until sometime between 20-22 weeks, and at the beginning I didn't even feel her as often as other people described feeling their babies. I think I started feeling pretty consistent movement at about 25/26 weeks. And right know at 30 weeks, I'm typing while watching my belly move, pretty cool!!!:D

I was 19W4D with DD. At that point I was happy to feel one kick a day. I didn't feel regular movement until maybe 26 weeks or so.
The first feeling was at 18 weeks, and it was a flat-out thump! No butterflies, popcorn, etc., for me. I'm carrying a soccer player!

I felt the "popcorn popping" that someone else described around 18 weeks. At 24 weeks I feel him kick every day (usually late at night), but still not powerful enough to feel him from the outside.
Around 18 weeks I felt her moving. Now at 22 weeks, my husband can feel her kick when he puts his hand on my belly:)

Same for me at about 17-18 weeks. Driving my car and a huge kick/elbow/punch. It was unmistakeable. No flutters for me the kid just keeps kicking me and hard enough to feel from the outside!

red_canuck-- You will probably still continue to stress yourself out once you feel the baby move too. I started to feel the baby move every once in awhile at 17 weeks. I didn't feel the baby move more regularly until about 20 weeks or so. It seemed like at 25 weeks my baby decided to move less frequently, so it kind of worried me some when I didn't feel my baby move.
I felt the first movement at 16 weeks, and my DH was able to feel it at 17 weeks. It's very different for everyone though, as my cousin who is 21 weeks with her second child has not felt any movement yet- and they say that you feel movement earlier with subsequent babies.

I was feeling "gas bubbles" around 17-19 weeks or so. I guess I can assume it was her, but nothing that made me think it was the baby at that time.
I truly felt the baby move inside and out at 20w. DH also felt her moving around. It has been off and on for about a week - but not strong enough to feel from the outside again. I feel her more depending on how I am sitting - if I have my legs bent up I can definitely feel her moving around.

I'm glad you're not feeling stressed out about this anymore. If it helps any, i have read that women who are more petite tend to feel their babies earlier, and women who are more curvacious tend to feel their babies later (maybe extra 'padding' has something to do with it? Not sure--but i'm positive there's nothing to worry about :)).

I am 18 weeks,1day & a few days ago in bed I felt a flutter or something in my lower abdomen, it lasted a few minutes. Then yesterday the same thing happened. I am assuming it is the baby, I have no idea what else it could be.
Then today when I was laying down, all of a sudden my lower abdomen got really hard for a few seconds, then softer again. I am assuming this was the baby too. Or I have a wierd tumor. But, I had to pee like two minutes later.
My doctor asked me yesterday if I was feeling anything & I told her I was not sure. She did not say anything one way or the other, just that once I do, it may not be consistent so not too worry, but if I don't feel anything for a long time to call.

That sounds like a Braxton-Hicks contraction to me. Those are really normal to start having around that time. The flutters i bet were the baby.

I felt flutters between 17 and 19 wks. Then when I was 20 wks I definitely noticed kicks/movements. I could have felt them earlier but had other things on my mind (I was still dealing with my m/s until a little past 20 wks on a daily basis). From week 20 until the end I felt the baby move every day and usually it was numerous times throughout the day.
I wouldn't stress about it. The baby could be turned towards your back, the placenta could be in front of it, it could be transverse with the legs pointing in a direction in which you can't feel the kicks. Or any number of other things. My OB asked when I went to my 20 wk appt if I'd been feeling any movement. I said I wasn't sure but I had noticed somethings. He said that usually it's about week 20 that you notice it. He asked about feeling any flutters and again I said I wasn't sure. My mom described it as butterfly wings touching you. I've heard it described other ways as well (on a roller coaster, going down a big hill, etc.).

I would say I felt my baby move around 18 weeks. It seemed every day after that the movements just got stronger and stronger. I know some women who took a long time to feel their baby, and some who felt it earlier. I think it just depends on you and your body. :)

hooray! I thought I was crazy when I felt a strange "flep-flep" tapping in my tummy yesteray... I thought it was way too early. And while it looks like 14w1d is definitely early, it isn't unheard of! So maybe it really was my little gymnast! I'm so excited to feel it again! Is there anything I can do to, well, encourage some movement?

I felt kicks before I felt flutters. I felt my first kicks during my 16th week. They became more frequent as the days went on & felt her kick at least once a day by the 17th week. Now I am at 19 weeks & I feel her throughout the day.
I don't think I've ever felt the baby while standing up... I've either been sitting or laying down. DH felt the baby for the first time this past weekend (so at 19 weeks).
This is my first pregnancy.

This is my first pregnancy and I first felt the baby at 16 weeks. It was more of a writhing feeling (like a wet worm) than flutters or taps and I was not sure for the longest time if it was the baby or some weird gastrointestinal anomoly. His movements could not be felt everyday until maybe 19 or 20 weeks and at 21 weeks or so DH and I could feel him on the outside. At 22 weeks I could see him move from the outside with a bare belly and a lot of patience. Now at 23 weeks he moves very consistently all day, can see him move, but not through my shirt yet. DH saw him move with a bare belly at 22 weeks. When I say "see" him move the movements are pretty subtle and you have to be paying attention. Also when you feel it on the outside for the first time it just feels like a tiny muscle spasm.

I started to feel "something" around 18 wks but I wasn't certain if it was the baby.
By 20wks, I knew for sure it was my little man moving around. Now at 24 wks, he is moving like crazy!
They say for 1st time moms, you don't always recognize the baby movements at first.

20 weeks before I started to feel what was definitely the baby - felt some things earlier on (about 16 weeks) but I no longer think they were probably the baby (more likely other muscle twitches or whatever that I was just paying closer attention to). Now at 22 weeks I feel it daily.

eta - flutters in the beginning, full fledged movements 20+weeks
I'm 15w3d today. (this is my first pregnancy). For the past week or so, I've been having a very weird feeling inside, and not sure if it could be fetal movement or something else. At random times during the day, I feel almost like I'm have an irregular heartbeat, except it comes from nowhere near my heart, more from down inside my stomach, but it's hard to pinpoint where exactly. It doesn't seem like it's low enough though to be inside my uterus. But then again, I've heard some people describe early movements as popcorn popping, and that could potentially describe what I'm feeling. Anyone else experience anything similar, or is this something that I should be concerned about/address with my doctor?

sounds like the baby moving to me. i've never experienced the popcorn feeling, for me it's always just felt like a nervous twitch in my tummy. you say it isn't very low though, which is odd, for me i've always felt it right above my pubic bone.

When my friend started to get bigger, she said she felt like there were butterflies in her stomach all the time. I think it was the baby moving.

I felt my DD at 17 weeks and this time around I felt it as early as 12 weeks. But I guess it´s easier the second time around because you know what it feels like. It also depends on the position of your placenta and your if you´re overweight or not.

first real kick at 21 weeks and 2 days (I remember it cause it was my birthday)

edited to add that we saw during my 20 US that my placenta is on top and padding between my uterus from my tummy so my Dr said it might take me awhile longer to feel something. This was good news to me since it seemed everyone else was feeling things early.

I started feeling flutters at 13w. They're not consistent, but I feel them every 1-2 days.

RO's, did you feel fluttering much soon?
I'm almost 11 weeks and I've been feeling fluttering for a couple days now but I keep thinking it can't be and must be gas... Anyone else feel flutters super early with #2?
I just pulled this thread up because of almost the same thing. I'm 9w4d today and wondering if I'm going insane. For about the last 15 minutes, I've been feeling this weird little fluttery sensation - almost like a muscle spasm, but it's definitely internal. I know I described early movements from Noah like this, but it was at ~16 weeks. 9 1/2 seems a little early, so maybe I am going insane ;)

I started feeling flutters at 14wks. My DH could feel tiny little kicks from the outside by 16 1/2 weeks! They felt like I was having a little muscle spasm.

Same here! I've felt on and off 'sensations' this week and thought I'm crazy, but wondered what the earliest the baby could be felt. I am 11wks 4 days now, so I wonder.....

I felt faint flutters at 15-16 weeks, and strong movement by 18 weeks.
The baby ended up being a mover & shaker---still going strong at 39 weeks.

I know all of the baby books say it's "impossible", but I'm 33 years old, and I know the difference between gas and baby movement. I also have a tilted uterus, and my OB says it's very possible to feel movement that early.

20 weeks for me. I may have felt tiny flutters around weeks 18-19, but couldn't promise it was the baby moving. At the 20 week ultrasound, I suddenly felt strong kicks, that coincided with what I was seeing on the screen. He's been karate chopping ever since.

I thought I started feeling movement around 16 weeks or so, but I wasn't for sure until about 18 weeks. Now at 24 weeks it's not just feeling movement, but SEEING it too. It's crazy!
20 weeks for me and 22 weeks for DH

Baby #1: 22 wks (may have felt it sooner, but wasn't sure what it was)
Baby #2: 18-20 wks. Even though I am an RO, I still wasn't sure if what I was feeling was the baby. By 20 wks, I knew for sure.

Butterfly flutters at 14 weeks - figured it out a week later. DH finally felt him move (from the outside obviously) at 25 weeks.

14 weeks 6 days, and it felt like vibrations! I have since felt more vibrations and pokes, but it's not a real constant everyday movement yet. oh, and I just started my 19th week today

I'm pretty sure I've been feeling little taps since a few days ago (starting about 15w4d). They don't feel like flutters at all, nor do they feel like popcorn. It really just feels like being poked from the inside with a Q-tip.

I was about 14-15 weeks with both of them. In hindsight, I may have felt it sooner and just didn't realize it. DH felt them both at 27-28 weeks.

I felt baby boy move at 17 weeks...as I was standing up for a friend during a wedding. I've never watched the wedding video, but I'm sure if I did, I'd see myself making a funny face when it happened!

With DD1 it was around 14 weeks, but I didn't realize it until a few weeks later. With DD2 it was 21-22 weeks before I felt ANYTHING, but DD2 has an anterior placenta which blocked me from feeling her movement for a long time.

I felt my baby move around 18 1/2 weeks. It was just like everyone said it would be...a slight "flutter" or "gurgle" feeling...sort of like a gas bubble.

I am at 17 weeks now, this is our 1st preg. Anyhow, everyone keeps asking if I have felt any movements, and to tell you the truth, I have not.
So how far along were you when you 1st felt it. I am getting worried every day I don't feel something!

There's a thread with a ton of answers here (http://www.constantchatter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1394&highlight=baby+move).
Don't stress, everyone's different! I kept waiting and worrying because people and my doctor would ask if I'd felt the baby yet. I didn't feel her move until about 21 weeks.

Yup, I didn't start feeling DS until close to 20 weeks and then it was even longer before I started feeling DD move (22 weeks)..
I'm always jealous when I hear women who feel their baby move at like 12 weeks.

I was 21-22 weeks I think before I felt DS move....don't panic. Every baby is different and they all reach their milestones at VERY different ages, I am learning! :) Congrats!

This is my first baby, and I felt him move at exactly 20 weeks. In fact, it was right after we had the 20 week ultrasound that I felt something that I was sure was the baby. I may have felt a few twinges a week or so earlier, but nothing that I could positively identify as the baby.

with my son it was around 20 weeks or so, I was on bedrest starting at that time so had plenty of time to really wait for motion.
With my twins I started around 18 weeks, usually feeling my Baby A (Julianna) at night I would feel Baby B (Katelyn) sometimes. I was always nervous if I didn't feel them, not sure if they were ok, so was happy I had so many u/s

I was 20 weeks and 2 days. I went in for my anatomy ultrasound and the tech said "Wow, you're baby moves a lot". I was shocked b/c up until that point I hadn't felt anything and couldn't feel him moving when she said that. As soon as I left the appt, from that day on he kicked all the time.
