Another day, another breakup
The Insider is reporting that Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe have split after eight years of marriage. "Hilary and Chad have decided to separate, but they are hopeful they will be able to get through this tough time," Swank's manager said. I know this won't come as too much of a surprise to some people, but I'm kinda bummed -- I liked these kids together, and I hoped they would make it.

I wish they had just done it on New Years and officially ended "the year of the breakup"
Personally she bugs me and he was always a sorta wifeyman....i don't know what he is going to do since his full time job seemed to be Mr. Hillary Swank
Were they part on the InStyle weddings curse??
No way. :( I would never have guessed it would happen. Very sad. I like Hilary.

ITA. And, she irked me when she thanked everyone under the sun BUT her husband. Nice.

I'm kind of surprised by this one. I'm not much of a fan of Hilary's. DH did go to school with her though. He said she wasn't very nice back then.

I'm not sure this is a fair dig. Would you have the same criticism if it were a male movie star with a less famous wife? How about Julia Roberts or Brooke Shields? Or Kate Hudson? Or Madonna?

ITA. Since when can't a woman be more successful or famous than her husband without him being criticized? Give me a break--it's 2006 and we should be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past these bogus stereotypes.

I always saw him as married to Hillary Swank and being a support to her career goals. The other husbands you mentioned have professions... Danny Moder is a cameraman, Guy Ritchie a director, Chris Robinson is a musician. Besides minor acting in the past i don't know what Chad Lowe currently does for a living....maybe he is involved in a project i am not aware of?

I gotta say, Danny Moder- IMO- has a lot less of a career than Chad Lowe. I never would've heard of him if it weren't for Julia Roberts.

But again, Danny Moder is a cameraman, not an actor. How many cameraman have you heard of EVER? He could be the best cameraman in the world for all we know. This is not a profession where people become household names.

Chad Lowe is an emmy award winning actor, and I'm fairly certain he has been doing stage and TV work the last few years. Regardless, who cares? Do you know what George Clooney's latest GF does for a living? Or Dustin Hoffman's wife? How about Mrs. Russel Crowe?
It's too bad. I liked them both and they made a cute couple.

Chad also did episodes on Medium and Law & Order somewhat recently. I like him SO much better than I like her.
I'm one of the fence-sitters that threw her over to the "don't like" column when she gave her Academy Award speech. It's one thing to "forget" to mention your husband if he wasn't there with you and you had a lot of other people staring you in the face... he was there making a total fool of himself crying for her accomplishment. I've always thought she has been quite dismissive of him when I've seen them together.

I don't think that's a fair comparison since they were all famous when they married their current husbands. Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank got married before she was famous. And she launched into super stardom, and he didn't. I would think that would put a lot of stress on them. And because of this, I have to say I kind of saw it coming, but it is very sad.
I thought they were cute together. Maybe they'll work it out. I knew of him well before I knew of her as an actor. Sure, I was reading 16 magazine at the time and it's been a while but still!

I think it's the curse of the more successful woman and the man's ego not being able to handle it. I think that is the reason why Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley broke up and why Nick and Jessica broke up. It's hard for some guys' egos to handle huge succcess of their wives when their own careers aren't blossoming like they used to.

Every time I've seen them they were so sweet together. They were one of DH's clients at his former job and he would always comment on how great they were together. I'm actually surprised by this. :(

Hillary was interviewed on the red carpet at the Globes (looking fabulous) and said she is not single - she's trying to work it all out. So there is still hope, I guess!

An addition to what meatpie posted above, from PerezHilton.com:
The Golden Globes was filled with lots of horny, drunk male stars last night, and Hilary Swank, who recently announced that she was going through a trial separation with her husband, Chad Lowe, could have easily had any of them. She was looking hot! However, the Globe-winning actress was having none of that.
Asked what it was like to be single again by a reporter on the red carpet, Swank snarked back: "I'm not single; I'm trying to work out my marriage."
Yay. Give marriage a chance y'all!

Hilary And Chad Reunite
February 21, 2006 11:01 a.m. EST
(AHN) - Oscar winning actress Hilary Swank is reportedly back together with her husband, Chad Lowe, after a brief separation.
The couple separated late last year and have been trying to save their marriage ever since. They were spotted out and about together in Malibu, California, and Swank was wearing her wedding band.
Hilary and Chad met in Los Angeles at a Hollywood Athletic Club party and he asked to her dinner. Chad was 24 and Hilary was 18. The couple was married in September 28, 1997 after knowing one another for 5 years.

SWANK AND LOWE NOT RECONCILING
Despite recent sightings of HILARY SWANK and CHAD LOWE appearing affectionate together, the couple will not be reconciling, according to media reports in the US. The pair called it quits in January (06) after eight years of marriage, but were hopeful they could work things out during a trial separation. A source tells American publication Us Weekly that spending too much time apart was to blame for the eventual demise of the relationship, adding, "They are not getting back together. "There seemed to be competition between them." 30/03/2006 09:10

I heard on the radio this morning that they had gotten back together and were planning on renewing their vows. I'm gonna have to scrounge the internet to see if I can back it up. I really hope the radio report is true and not the posted report. (I really want one couple to have happy news!!)

Well, everything online for the renewing the vows is dated around 3/24, everything talking about the split is dated today.
I'm still holding out hope that they are sticking together, but it doesn't look toooooo promising.

Cross-posted with celeb gossip thread....Hilary: Chad's Substance Abuse Caused Split
Chad Lowe's "substance-abuse" problem was at the heart of the reason that his marriage to Hilary Swank broke up, the double Oscar-winning actress reveals in a candid new interview.
"I knew something was happening but I didn't know what," Swank tells Vanity Fair magazine. She also says her ex has been fighting his problem for years, and he is sober now. She does not name what substance he abused.
But, she says in excerpts from the interview obtained by the New York Post, "When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me. And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid."
She goes on to say, "I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors. But that just kind of blew it open. It made me look at things a lot deeper. That's when you realize it's not going to work."
Representatives for Lowe, 38, could not be reached for comment on the article.
Swank, 31, who took home Hollywood's highest prize for Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby, denies that the success of her career was a factor in their breakup.
"Chad is very supportive of my career," she says in the interview. "He is, I think, genuinely happy for my success . . . I think that any frustration for him stemmed from the lack of opportunities in his own career."
As for her reaction upon learning of her husband's habit, she says: "When I found out, I wanted to be there, I knew it was the most important time of his life. That's when he needed me most."
His problem, she adds, is "an enormous obstacle to overcome, and he's doing it. He's living a sober life. … I know how difficult it is, and I'm really proud of his sobriety."
The couple – who announced their separation in January, then looked to be reconciling, only to announce their divorce in May – first met at a 1992 Hollywood Athletic Club bash. "We just started talking," Swank recalled for PEOPLE in 2003. She called it "love at first sight."
Said Lowe, "It was like the old cliché where you see somebody, lock eyes across the room, and time stands still. ... I said, 'I would love just to take you to lunch.' Then I worked my way up to dinner. We had lunch, we had dinner and then some."
It was a first marriage for both. They have no children.
"It takes two to make something work or not work. I'm a person with my own faults and troubles," Swank now says. "In the end, it just didn't work, but I would never look back on this relationship as failed. I look at it as 131/2 years of success."

I wonder what he was on...and what other issues they had.
That is too bad. It's really hard to deal with substance abuse with a spouse and I applaud her for trying to make it work.

Lowe Feels Betrayed by Swank
Chad Lowe is furious with estranged wife Hilary Swank after she detailed his substance abuse problem to the world in a Vanity Fair magazine article. Swank made the shocking revelation in the August issue of the magazine and claims Lowe's problem contributed to the breakdown of their marriage. A source close to Lowe tells American publication Us Weekly, "Chad was pretty surprised that Hilary would bring (his problem) into the equation." Swank didn't specify the exact nature of Lowe's substance abuse problem, but the actor is now sober. Another source adds, "Chad has been sober for three years. He isn't ashamed of his struggle, but he really wishes Hilary wouldn't have talked publicly now." Family friend Bob Balaban says, "Whatever problem he might have had didn't affect his work." Swank's lawyers insist she warned Lowe about what she had revealed to the magazine and that she did not make the claims in an effort to land the magazine's cover to publicize her new films.
