I posted this in the other paci thread but I really don't want it to get lost:

I was thinking about this cutting the nipple a bit more when I brain stormed different options. I came up with getting DS a completely different paci than he's been using for 18 mos. I think he'll reject it since it's not his beloved Nuk. I bought the Playtex Safe 'N Sure because the nipple is completely different.

BUT on the back of the package it states:

Caution: To Prevent A Possible Choking Hazard.... Do not leave child unattended with pacifier. What the heck does this mean? I checked 4 other paci's and none of them say this except all the Playtex paci's. Does anyone use these and if so does your child sleep with them?

I'd like to give it to him starting tomorrow at his afternoon nap (hoping he won't take it) and the company is closed till Monday. Anyone?

There's two risks to a lone pacifier: that the child will get the whole dang thing wedged in their trachea (SO unlikely now that the part that rests against their lips is made so big) or that, as the pacifier shows wear and tear, small pieces will break off and be lodged in the trachea as they're swallowed. This happens with latex (solid brown) nipples far more often than with with silicone (clear) nipples (silicone stands up better to repeated washings) and is really unlikely with a new nipple in any case.

I think the company just wants to cover their.... ah.... bases. ;) I'd go ahead and give it.

I agree with BTB. SOunds like a CYA statement. We have 2 of those pacis for Noah, but he likes the other playtex binkies better, so those never really got used. I leave him alone with them all the time though. He sleeps with them! (That may be about the stupidest thing I've ever seen written on a pacifier package. It's like saying not to leave your child alone with pajamas, or a crib!)

Thanks Ladies. I was so freaked out about that statement. I looked on Consumer Reports & it looks like they had different type of paci recalled due to pieces detaching and possibly choking. I think it is a CYA.

Thanks again!
