I am actually from MN but I am very close to the Iowa border & MIL lives in Nora Springs. Anyone close to Mason City or further North or Northeast???
I grew up in Hampton (about 30 mins south of Mason City) and my parents still live there.

I went there from 1995-1999, graduating in 1999. I was an English major there but also did athletic training as well.

Hi - I'd like to be an honorary member as well. I grew up in Belmond and moved to NYC in 1992 and then to Chicago in 1998. Been here ever since. So weird that Iowa has a thread on CC.

DH and I met there, too, though he didn't attend Iowa State. We met at People's (R.I.P). :p

He's from Iowa originally (Britt, and he went to college at Central in Pella) and we'd like to get back into the state if DH can find a job. We'd also consider Des Moines, although his brother lives in Cedar Rapids so that'd be preferable.

I graduated from Central College too. What years did your DH graduate from there?

The Cedar Rapids area is a nice place to raise a family. That's where we're located. I will say that the area is a little economically depressed compared to other metro areas in Iowa. The flood and the aftermath of it certainly aren't helping either.

I believe he graduated in 1995. Could have been '94 though.

I was wondering about the economic state over there, after all the flooding. He works in computers, more specifically in SQL reporting. I saw that the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area is fairly tech-heavy?

We're still pretty undecided what we're doing, he has a good stable job here in Omaha and it's hard to leave, especially with the economy the way it is. It'll all depend on his job situation. We're putting our house up for sale in February no matter what. Should be interesting....

As far as the job market, the Iowa City/CR corridor is pretty tech heavy. DH works as a software engineer for a large company in CR, so there are jobs out there.

If you guys do end up looking here, let me know. I can tell you what parts of town to avoid or to seek out (and the situation with the schools-- I teach here).
