What are your tips for using BE. I've had it for about 2 weeks, and I'm not sure that I love it. Who has tips they would like to share?
I don't have any tips, but I was wondering if it's supposed to be thick & cakey? I've seen it on TV and I thought the powder would just blend in flawlessley. I went to Sephora and had someone put it on me and it looked horrible. It was so thick, it looked like it would be fine if I was on TV.
How is it supposed to look?
I am so glad someone started this topic. I am almost out of powder, and I was going to try Bare Minerals. My MIL bought ita few months ago, and I have to say that, when she started using it, I noticed a total difference in her skin. It does look great. And I had no idea that she had started using it. I kept thinking that her diet was doing great things for her skin! But for some reason, I am a little leary of using it myself. Not sure why...I just have some hesitation about it.

I use BE and I love it. If it looks cakey, then the person probably put too much on you. The idea is to use a very little bit and keep on buffing until you have the level of coverage that you desire.

I have been using these products for about 6 months and I love them. I agree if it looks cakey you either are putting on too much, or maybe you have the wrong color. Mine always looks flawless and people think it is my skin that looks good, and cant believe i am wearing foundation.
One trick I do is put the mineral veil on first, then the regular color and the blush, then put the mineral veil on top. Apply thin!! SOmetimes I don't need to dip it into the powder.

I have to agree with Maggie8202 about people being confused about my foundation. Most of them are surprised when I tell them that I'm wearing something.
I only apply the amount of foundation that sticks to the top of the lid, after shaking. It's a little amount. Probably less than 1 coating of a foundation brush.
I'm looking for some good summer eyeshadow recommendations. I'd like something that I can just swipe on and run--nothing too heavy & just 1 colour.

You definitely need the technique down- swirl, tap to remove the excess powder, then buff. You only put on what sticks to the brush.
I got the trial kit from Sephora in April, and I still have plenty. I really really like it- it evens out my skin tone but doesn't look foundation-y at all, and doesn't get shiny like most do on me.

I use Sheer Cover...same concept, different stuff. LOVE IT. Have used it about a year, and people have actually commented on my skin. Don't use too much, or it will look cakey.

yeah, I think I'm still a tad bit too heavy handed with mine. But I'll get the hang of it (heck, I only even wear make-up about once a week now)

I LOVE the color bare skin. perfect summer shade to wear alone.

I love Hopscotch eyeshadow for using just one color. It's a bit peachier than bare skin and isn't a glimmer. I'm actually wearing it right now!
I guess I'll have to go back to Sephora and try and apply it myself. It didn't seem like the lady put a lot on but it was so thick. I wanted to get a kit but they don't come in my color. I am the lightest color.

I've been curious about BE for a while now... Every time the infomercial comes on I get sucked in, but I've never quite worked up the courage to order any. What I really want to know - are those 'miracle' transformations you see on TV anywhere close to reality? Any of you girls brave enough to post a before and after shot so we can see how it looks on a real human being?

I think that BE application takes a bit of practice to get right... at the beginning lots of people either use too much or too little, I actually started out using too little (I only watched the infomercial as a guide) and was disappointed in the coverage until I learned to build it up gradually.
Like someone mentioned earlier, a mineral veil "sandwich" (mineral veil first, then the foundation, then mineral veil again on top) works for some to minimize the appearance of pores. (It works for me, although sometimes I'm in too much of a rush and just skip to the foundation)
I mentioned this on WC, but there's a new BE board that's trying to get going (it's still a bit slow), and I was thinking that you all might be able to jump in and give it some help...

Have been thinking about trying Bare Essentals for a while now but I'm a non-make-up person so I was nervous about whether I would like it.
I felt that it would be easier for me to adust to than other forms of make-up which I have worn from time to time.
So happy to hear all the people who like it and find that it makes your skin healthy too. I also like that it is a natural sunscreen too.
Maybe I'll have to go buy some.
sunchaser26 -- If you don't want to take a big financial plunge, you can buy samples of BE on EBay for very little money. That way you can try it out and see if you like it before buying full-sized stuff.

The only tips I have is to make sure you *really* buff it or it will look cakey. Also, give it time - it will get better & better. One more thing - make sure you are exfolliating regularly - this will prevent caking. I tell all my clients to ALWAYS use a washcloth when they wash their face as it's great exfolliation.

The BE will usually last me pretty much all day long (9+ hours)... if I'm going out straight from work I carry around a mix of foundation and mineral veil (with the baby buki) that I use for a quick dusting.

Been using this stuff for over a year now. It's so quick and easy once you get the technique down. Lately, I've ventured out to try other mineral make-up brands.
Coleen - You look great! Your application is wonderful :)
Colleen, thanks so much for posting the "real woman" pictures. It's great to see how well it works on an average Jane.
My skin goes crazy every once and a while and I was wondering how you get such good coverage. I'm fine with my basic coverage, but not too thrilled with how it covers my "spots".
Do you use different brushes? I'm about to place an order with Crown Brushes (http://www.crownbrush.com/ONCAT13.htm) (thanks CaliBride for that site!) I have a kabuki now, but it's cheap and stiff (not very fun to buff with).
Thanks again for sharing the look!

For those who already use bare minerals -- what do you wear underneath it on a daily basis?
I get breakouts from time to time, at which point I use various lotions w/ salicylic acid content under my foundation; most of the time, I use basic moisture-balancing lotion. I use NARS gel fraicheur (a light gel foundation) currently.
Neither really seems as if it'd work very well under powder foundation, though ... how does that work? Wait till the moisturizer gets absorbed before applying the makeup? Or are you not supposed to wear anything underneath it at all?
swampy - I use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer under BE. In my experience, it looks better when I wait til my moisturizer has "dried" before applying BE.
katy - I use the concealer brush to cover up blemishes and it works well for me.

katy - Right now, I'm still using the kabuki from the BM kit. I have 2 of the 3 kabukis Crown Brush sells. I personally don't like either one of them for BM foundation. It's not dense enough so it doesn't provide enough coverage. They're great for Mineral Veil and other face colors though. Crown also offers a kabuki specifically for mineral make-up, which I don't have. I would go for that one if you do buy from Crown.
swampy - Currently, I'm using philosophy's moisturizer. I've heard the primer by Smashbox works great underneath BM, but I have yet to try it.
In case anyone's interested, there's a pretty good step-by-step tutorial for applying the foundation: BM Foundation Application (http://www.livejournal.com/community/bareescentuals/21179.html). Maybe this will help someone. :)

I've read that when applying moisturizer or whatever under BE, to let it (the moisturizer) set for at least 2 minutes (although some leave it for longer, like 5-10 min) before applying the minerals.
I've had good results with using the Smashbox primer, but I can't say that I use it every day.

I also got sucked into the BE informercial and broke down and bought it. I used it for about a month and stopped. I liked what it did to my skin and the appearance but it made my skin so shiny. Like in pictures I saw of myself my face looked like a grease pit. I didn't use alot of it when I did and I used mineral veil after and it still didn't help. I gave it to my mother though and she loves it so I'm glad it wasn't a total waste.

Katy - I have been using those Crown brushes now for a bit, and I think they are just as good as the BE ones. :) (the regular ones anyway...I don't have the kabuki).
I love this stuff too. Definitely for summer, it keeps the shiny's away all day. Definitely a feat in itself!
I have a question: I don't use foundation. I use Clinique powder right now, just ran out, and need to replace it. I have been interested in Bare Minerals, but as a powder replacement. If I am just going to use the powder, does that work? Or do I have to do the whole process?
swampy -- I use Murad skin products (skin perfecting lotion and acne treatment gel) under my BM. When I want things to last extra long (sometimes I work 12 and 13 hour days), I use the SmashBox Photo Finish Primer. It really works well.
Sometimes I do the mineral veil sandwich as well (mineral veil over my oily parts, followed by foundation, then covered w/mineral veil), which works pretty well also.
I have pretty oily/shiny skin, and when I use these methods by the end of a long day, I have almost no shine -- which is a big deal for me.
:)
Kyrsten -- I wouldn't buy BE foundation as a powder substitute since it's not really a powder per-se. If you're looking for something just to control shine and give your skin a nice look, I'd buy Mineral Veil, which is more like a traditional loose powder.
bluhimmy
07-01-2005, 12:12 PM
Lisa777 - The shiny appearance you're referring to is due to the bismuth that's in BM. I think BM has too much of it. If you're still interested in mineral make-up, but don't like the “glow” BM gives, there are plenty of mineral make-up brands out there that sells bismuth-free foundation powders. I have the same complaint, thus I've been mixing my own concoction with BM and other mineral make-up.

I have seen the infomercials on BE and I wondered if anyone likes it and make them look as good as the ladies on TV. It seems like a great concept. I am thinking about buying some to try it out. Right now I am in the never-ending quest to find good makeup for my skin that is oily. Also a great foundation that matches my skin -someting that is difficult for women of color.

Hmm, I've never heard of Murad. I'll have to look them up. (Hopefully they aren't too expensive ... my skincare budget is pretty small right now.)
Someone else mentioned the smashbox primer as well -- do you use it instead of a moisturizer, or layered between moisturizer and the foundation?
swampy -- Well, Murad is pretty pricey, but it lasts a while. My skincare budget was pretty small, too, but I was so fed up with my skin that I decided I had to try something, and I'm really happy I did. You can go to Murad.com to find out about the products, but I buy my stuff from Ebay, because it's generally cheaper. They also sell Murad stuff at Sephora, if you have one near you.
Regarding the smashbox primer, I use it over my moisturizer, not as a moisturizer.

I agree that it really is worth the cost, unlike so many other expensive skin care lines. I use the Murad Acne line, and I love it. I'd heard so many people rave about it, but I just didn't believe it could be that great until I tried it. I'm a believer now. :)

I've been using Bare Minerals for about two weeks now, and I quite like it. I bought the starter kit at Sephora, and it comes with a bottle of MD Formulations Facial Cleanser (a glycolic cleanser). Between the makeup and the glycolic cleanser, my skin is already looking (and feeling) so much smoother and clearer. Love it!
I need some ideas for eyeshadow colors too... Any thoughts for a very pale blue-eyed blonde? Although I have freckles, I think I'm actually cool-toned.

I am pretty pleased with BM, except it takes FOREVER to apply! Too many steps! So I usually end up using just the bronzer (warmth), and it looks fabu.
But when I do the whole shebang, my skin looks flawless! (it isn't, in real life).
When I run out, I may just buy the bronzer alone.

Maybe I'm not doing it right (I never watched the video), but it doesn't take me very long to put on, really -- no longer than any other makeup. I've heard this complaint from others, so I wonder if I'm just missing something. But even if I'm applying it incorrectly, I love the way my skin looks when I'm wearing it. :)
it doesn't take me long to put it on either (i've watched the video AND infomercials :p ). much less time than liquid foundation b/c it doesn't require blending. maybe as you get used to using it, it will take less time?
bluhimmy
07-18-2005, 02:41 PM
It definitely takes a lot less time than liquid or creme foundation. The blending is much easier with BM. Of couse if you normally use powder foundation, then I can see how BM might take longer, since the extra step with mineral veil. Also, I don't use warmth everyday.

So ... I hate foundation. I've never even found a powder foundation I like. I just use MAC blot powder, but I have to reapply it a couple of times during the day. What exactly is this mineral veil? It sounds like that's the thing that keeps the shininess at bay ... which is what I am looking to do. Can you ladies point me in the right direction? Where should I begin with Bare Minerals stuff (or, should I begin)? Thanks!

I don't like foundation, either, but I do like Bare Minerals foundation. You might want to give it a try. You can buy samples on EBay for really cheap. I hate foundation but as I get older, I realize that I need something to help even my skin out and hide the redness I have in my cheeks. This stuff is really great as it feels very light but gives enough coverage to make my skin look great. I went to a BE store (in LA) and they did a tutorial and make-over and I was pretty impressed. I don't use the kabuki brush as it gives too much coverage - I have one of their other brushes (can't recall the name) and that works better.
I live in Vegas - it's 117 degrees here today - and my make up lasts all day, doesn't shine (I'm oily but less so since we moved here but I do use Mineral Veil), and I love it. Total convert. :)

To the ladies that said BM takes less time to apply than regular liquid foundation: really? I must be doing it wrong! I watched the video and this is how I do it:
Liquid:
Dab a spot on forehead, cheeks, and chin.
Smoosh it all around my face with my fingers (in face-washing motion), making sure there are no visible lines.
BM:
Apply primer
Apply BM with the small, max concealment brush in "problem areas"
Apply BM with medium coverage brush all over face
Apply BM again with kabuki brush, concentrating on problem areas
Apply warmth with medium brush to areas where the sun would naturally touch
Apply Mineral Veil with medium brush
Dust face with clean brush to remove excess powder
Akemi
07-20-2005, 06:27 PM
I think that if you don't apply primer, concealer, blush, and powder with your liquid foundation, then you would skip those steps with the BE (primer, concealer brush, warmth, mineral veil)... The BE seems like it has more steps, but it ends up being more of a full face than just liquid foundation by itself.
I've never watched the video, but I apply my foundation with only one brush... I didn't know until now that they recommended doing it with two different brushes, I think one is fine. I do layer it on, though, to avoid putting too much on at once.
I think I need to watch the video!
BM:
Apply MV
Apply bisque with the small, max concealment brush in to cover under-eye circles
Apply BM with kabuki brush, concentrating on problem areas
Apply warmth with medium brush to areas where the sun would naturally touch
Apply Mineral Veil with medium brush
I've modified your list above to match what I do in the morning. I find that it takes longer to blend liquid foundation into my skin than it does to apply BM. I would be applying concealer and some sort of blush (i.e. warmth or something) even with liquid foundation, so that doesn't add to my overall time.
skyblu
07-25-2005, 03:32 PM
Okay, duh. I hadn't even thought to count concealer and blush and pwder time into my liquid foundation routine, but of course, I do use them. So you guys are right, BM takes about as long because it's more "all in one".
Off to slap some on before I go out with some friends!

I started off with just the foundation. I then added bisque (because I have really dark circles under my eyes) and mineral veil. Now I can't imagine using the foundation without mineral veil. I have oily skin, and the mineral veil really keeps it under control. Now I use Beauty blush and/or Warm Radiance for some color as well. I've become a bit of an addict. :)

I just wanted to add that I too have started wearing this make-up & It's been a wonderful experience. I quit wearing make-up 2 yrs ago, I just gave up -wasting $$$ and not getting what I needed, certainly not enhancing my look.
I do want to add that there is a learning curve - the 1st week I used too much, the 2nd week I used too little. Now I'm doing much better obtaining the results I want.
BTW I sandwich mineral veil - foundation- mineral veil (for shine) and I want those who are thinking about this make-up, that those 3 steps take me about 1 minute - no kidding! (that includes putting the lids back on, I do use the same brush but I use the lightest foundation - not much difference) I come home in the evening from work and I still look good!!!!!!
I also have a face color (i think that's what they call it) and an eyeshadow. I have a lipstick coming.
Can anyone tell me about the mascara that has a "tip" wand? Typically, I am not an
elitist needing all my make-up to come from 1 source. But I love this stuff. And yes, I'm guilty of sleeping in it at times.
anyone else use bisque or summer bisque for concealing? I just bought summer bisque a couple weeks ago and it doesn't cover up as well as I had hoped. Prior to buying this, I was just using the foundation to conceal. I don't find that bisque does any better than the foundation for cover up. :( Just wondering what your experience was with it...
I use bisque for concealing and find that it works better than just the foundation alone. I've never tried summer bisque because I have really fair skin.

I use Well Rested as a concealer (I use the 1.2 foundation). I like it better than just using foundation alone, but if you aren't liking the bisque, I know a lot of people who just use the foundation, and it works fine for them...

I also use 1.2 foundation and I just got a sample of the bisque with the concealing brush, but I wasn't impressed with its coverage under my eyes and for red spots (too dark for red spots on my fair skin). So I still use Lancome's Photogenic Under-Eye Concealer: http://i8.ebayimg.com/02/i/04/ba/ec/5d_1_b.JPG
and a tube of cream concealer for spots (what works best for me and acutally comes in my color is Mary Kay waterproof concealer in the gray tube).
I'm sure that's sacrilege to use a cream with BE, but I haven't found anything else to work! Anyone else do this too?

Still waiting, and not very patiently. ;) I can't wait to report back, though. I know I'll need to try the products out the first possible moment! :)

I only use the foundation and Mineral Veil (no concealer or color) so I'm not much use for suggestions, but I wanted to say that both Sephora and Ulta are now selling BE make up, which is great if you want to go "test drive" colors and products. I was lucky enough to live near a BE store when I lived in LA but now I go to Sephora and Ulta instead.

I received my samples last night (mineral veil and two colors of foundation), so I tried it out this morning. Wow! It is so awesome! I thought the application was extremely easy and it looks awesome. The coverage is great, too. It made all of my skin except two rather heinous blemishes that are healing look flawless. I'm off to order my products now! :D

I had to search for this thread after I saw the infomercial the other day. It looks great and light. I'm in the market for a new powder and I think I want to try this.
However, I'm a litlte concerned about the color matching. Did any of you have trouble with that? Also, where can you get this other than off the infomercial? What's the website? bareessentials.com belongs to something else.
The color blends beautifully, and you can mix more than one foundation color to make a custom color -- which is what I do.
I'd suggest you go to Ebay and purchase some samples before buying a whole kit so that you can try it out before making a major monetary commitment. There are a lot of sellers who sell samples.

MrsSmith - The colors are very forgiving. I'm asian and I consider myself on the lighter side, and I wear either a 1.2 or 2.0 depending on the season. Sometimes, I will mix them together.
The kit you see on the informercial can only be purchased through the infomercial website (http://www.bareminerals.com/). Or, you can buy them separately at a Bare Escentual boutique store, if one is near where you live.
QVC offers other kits, a well as Sephora. Of course, you might consider getting some samples from ebay and trying it out first before buying.
BTW: Bare Escentuals is going to be on QVC tomorrow, Wednesday (8/24) at 7-8 ET. You might want to check it out if you are thinking about trying out this make-up.

Georgiana, I am in the same boat that you are. I am searching for the best makeup for my oily, acne-prone skin; and I am also a woman of color :). I *just* ordered the kit today from sephora.com, and am really anxious and excited to try it b/c everyone I see on QVC always looks so glamorous after putting it on, and I have read some very good reviews about it. So, I'll let you know after trying it how it is :)

I'm completely satisfied with all of my makeup right now, except I want a sort of setting powder to keep shine away. Are the BE meant to be used solely together? Would it be worth it to use the Mineral Veil with my regular makeup, (concealer stick, foundation primer, liquid foundation, creme blush,) or would it loose its effectiveness without the whole BE system? I hope my question wasn't too confusing, and thanks in advance for any advice you girls can give me!

Ok, I don't get it. It just looks like powder on me. It barely gives me any coverage. I still have to use my regular concealer. It does feel nice on my face though. I ordered samples from Ebay-which was quite a bargain!
Did anyone else have this problem? I soooo don't look like the models on TV  ;)

Mineral Veil will work as a setting powder for any make up. I've used it over other foundation before.

Maybe you're not using enough? What sort of brush are you using, and are you buffing it on, or just sort of "putting" it on w/the brush?
And are you using bisque for your concealer or just the foundation? Bisque works well for me, but on really bad days I still use a cream concealer for extra coverage because when my circles are really dark bisque doesn't cut it.

By the way, just wanted to say how much I'm loving my Bare Minerals. I think I've got my application down, and I just love what it does for my skin.

Maybe you're not using enough? What sort of brush are you using, and are you buffing it on, or just sort of "putting" it on w/the brush?
Maybe I don't understand the difference b/t buffing and applying. I am circling it around with a fluffy brush.
Do most people use a BE concealer as well? Maybe I just need another product for my huge dark circles!

I just have a sample of the foundation. Is the concealer worth getting?
carrie, I just started using Summer Bisque as a concealer and it does ok, IMO. I was just using the foundation for concealer before and that did just as well. Probably depends on how much you need to conceal? When trying to concealing, you'll need to use the maximum coverage brush.
are you using any old brush to apply BE? if so, maybe that's why your coverage is not as good? I think most of us are using the Flawless Application brush to apply foundation. I know there is another website that sells make-up brushes a lot cheaper that works well w/ this line too. But I can't remember what it is...anyone???

carrie - I use summer bisque, but honestly, I don't think the coverage is super good; just okay. It really depends on what you want to cover up. Summer bisque works fine for my undereye circles, but not as well as I would like for my blemishes. I also like using it as a shadow base. I've also heard people using 'well rested' for concealing. Also, the right brush makes a huge difference. For concealing, you need to use either BE's concealer brush or maxium coverage brush, or something along the same line.

A too soft brush won't work since it doesn't hold enough of the powder. You'll need a brush that's made out of synthetic bristles.
As for foundation coverage, I find that the kabuki brush does a better job than the flawless foundation brush.
http://images-p.qvc.com/is/image/a/35/a32535.001?$proddetailmain$
I have some Crown brushes, and IMO they're good for the price. If you're looking for good coverage, stay away from the italian badgers. They are super soft, and although feels really nice on the face, it just doesn't work for coverage. But it is great for putting on finishing powder like mineral veil. These are great for those who want a light coverage and soft color applications.
Crow also offers a set of brushes for mineral make-up. I don't have them, but that the set I would go for if you're planning to buy.
vjel - I haven't tried this yet, but I heard that you can mix a little water with the bisque or foundation to make a paste. Then sort of dab, pat it on with a sponge and blend out the edges. That's suppose to give it a little extra coverage.

Thank you all for this thread! It caused me to go check out the Bare Escentuals boutique near my house, and I am hooked.
I have pretty severe cosmetic allergies that have created huge red patches on my lower cheeks near my jaw line.

I was in SF for the holiday weekend and got to go into a BE store for the first time. I bought this: http://a1377.g.akamai.net/7/1377/5720/20050622180044/www.sephora.com/assets/dyn/product/P61030/P61030_hero.jpg
The Quick Stick in Escentual Spice.
I really like it, and it does seem to last a while (half-day or so). I have worn Clinique's Bamboo Pink forever and this is the first color or another brand I've found that seems to be the same color, but lasts a lot longer. Also, I just discovered the sharpener in the bottom by looking at the pic, nice of the lady to tell me! I was wondering how I would sharpen it, and would have never discovered that. It's the first non-powder product I've gotten. I was intrigued by the brushless mascara, but I didn't get it. Anyone have any reviews of that?

I have not used this before, but am thinking about trying it.
How long does the foundation usually last compared to other brands? My 1.0 ounce bottle of Estee Lauder usually lasts about 3 months and costs a little over $30.
Also, are the "starter" sets that include the brushes really the way to go, or can you find less expensive brushes elsewhere?

The large foundation (which costs about $25) lasts me between 4 and 6 months.
I didn't buy the starter set. I ended up building my "collection" one product at a time. I bought a brush at the local beauty supply store, but I eventually upgraded to a good kabuki brush, which really makes a difference. I think you can just start with the foundation and maybe some bisque to see if you really like it. I probably sound like a broken record, but you should really consider purchasing some samples off of Ebay -- that way you can figure out which foundation color is right for you without spending a lot of money.

Does anyone with dry/normal skin use this foundation? I love the coverage and how it feels, but I don't seem to get that "glow" that most people do. My skin has no shine before applying the product. I guess that most people have some shine to their skin before applying the foundation. I've even tried clear radiance, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
BTW--I'm a ghostly shade of pale and I wear a 1.0. So, I'm hesitant to try many of the other all-over face colours b/c they look too dark for me.
Any advice would be appreciated

You don't sound like a broken record at all! :) I looked at the samples on EBay before coming here and posting; most of the samples are 1/8 tsp if memory serves me correctly. Is this amount really enough to tell if it's the right color *and* if I'd like to keep using it? It just didn't seem like enough to me.
ETA - I have a Sephora right down the road - maybe I should just go there and have them help me decide which shade to get.

I'm pale too and I just started using the Warmth and I really like it. It looks scarily too dark in the container, but if I use a small amount it works well. I would give the all-over colors a shot! I only use it as blush and on my temple and bridge of nose sometimes for the sun-kissed look.

I, too, am very pale. I use 1.0 mixed with 1.2. I've found warmth to be too dark for me, but warm radiance works really well. It's a lot lighter than warmth and is easier to apply for me. :)

I think you can find 1/4 teaspoon samples, but really, 1/8 would probably do the trick. If the Sephora near you actually stocks BE, then I say go there, though. Unfortunately mine doesn't, so I have to experiment on Ebay.

Since it's powder based, it might accentuate some dryness. But don't let that stop you from giving BM a try. What you might need to do is prep the face beforehand, moisturize and probably add a primer before applying BM.

I used just the foundation for a couple years before switching off it and am ready to be back. It's working well so far - the foundation, the mineral veil and then the warmth. For you ladies who are loving BM and have been thinking about trying out other BM products, you might be interested in the Eyeshadow Club BE offers, yet not advertised.
Every 3 months, they send you 3 full size eyeshadows which are colors they've select for that season: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. Cost is of each shipment is $19.99 + shipping. It comes out to be just under $24, if I remember correctly.
It's a really good deal since each eyeshadow sells for $12. So basically, you're getting 1 free. And they are returnable if you don't like them.

I normally hate wearing foundation - but as I've gotten older I've started wearing it daily - both to help even out my skin and to help protect from the sun. So I'm looking for something that goes on evenly, stays on, doesn't get streaky or gloppy.

Sure can use the same brush for all. I did that before I got the Kabuki brush. I know some people do designate a brush for each product. You can do that if you want, but I really don’t think it’s necessary. Also, I clean all my make-up brushes every week or two, so they are all very well kept. If you are worried about color transfer, some people use baby wipes to clean them in between uses.

how do you apply the samples if you don't own a kabuki brush?
thanks in advance!
When i first got my samples I just used my blush brush. It worked pretty well -- not as well as the kabuki brush, but not bad.

Thanks MLA! I have a pretty stiff bronzer brusher. That should work.
I went to Sephora and they tried a couple of colors on me to see what looked best. It's on my Christmas list this year, I needed the exact color, can't rely on DH to pick the right one :)

Okay, so I catch the infomercial for Bare Minterals just about every night when I'm up with DS. I have some questions... Do you use blush with this product or is the Warmth enough color? I haven't looked into it much more, but are there lipsticks, eyeliners, and mascaras in this line or do you use some other brands? I checked out the starter kit at Sephora yesterday, but it seemed like the special on the infomercial was a better deal as you get all of these "free" items with it. What about QVC, is it cheaper there? My step-dad works for QVC, so I can get a discount if I buy through them. Sorry for all the questions-I rarely wear makeup because it's just too much work (yes, I'm lazy) and I'm thinking/hopeful that this might be a good solution for me.

LeslieR -

Warmth is like a bronzer, which can also be used as a blush depending on your skin coloring and what you're preferences are. Warmth tends to be very dark on most people, so always use a light hand and a little goes a long way. Also, warmth can be mixed with mineral veil if you want to tone it down.

Bare Minerals has an enitre line of make-up. QVC, Sephora, and Ulta all carry some of their make-up kits, which are pretty good deals. I also posted about their eyeshadow club a couple pages back.
What about QVC, is it cheaper there? My step-dad works for QVC, so I can get a discount if I buy through them.
BM offers some kits exclusively for QVC. Those are pretty good deals, even with the crazy shipping fee they charge. For the basic stuff and kits, it's better to purchase it elsewhere than QVC, due to the shipping. Now, it really depends on what QVC discount your step-dad's recieves, but I'm sure whatever it is, you'll come out ahead. So for you, it might be cheaper to go the QVC route.

I'm jumping on the Bare Minerals wagon. I bought a starter kit today at Ulta..it contained two foundations, mineral veil and warmth, the kabuki brush and the how to DVD for $45. The containers are all pretty small but it seems like it will last a long time. I watched the DVD then tried it out and I love the way it looks and feel on my skin. I want to get some of the Glee blush and try a few of the other products.

Ok, what am I doing wrong?
Bought the foundation powder and mineral veil. I followed the LJ "tutorial" and the makeup goes on looking fairly decent. Doesn't look cakey and my husband says I look like I'm not wearing foundation. However, by the end of the day, my face is very dry. Not "shine free" dry, but dry like desert dry. I always use moisturizer before applying, but it doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions, or am I just one of the few who can't successfully wear this product?

It's similar to Jane Iredale since it is mineral make-up. And BM does not offer a compact foundation which I believe Jane Iredale does. Are you currently using Jane Iredale? I've been curious to try it out.
Anna Low - I don't have dry skin so I'm not sure what will work for you. But here a few things that comes to mind:. A few things come to mind. Maybe you need a heavier moisturizer, and make sure to let it dry completely, so your skin absorbs it all before applying the minerals. You can also try using a primer after your moisturizer, before the foundation. Another thing is applying less of the mineral foundation, and slowly build up the coverage as needed. And for areas that you need more coverage, you can apply more to those areas only. The other thing I can think of is maybe trying out some type of moisturizing finishing spray after you've applied your make-up. Hope this helps.

Yes, I use the Jane Iredale but it's really expensive. I bought the compact foundation about two months ago and I'm already seeing the bottom of the container showing through. I think it was $45 plus tax. Yikes!

Hmm... I've had mine for almost 2 years now and it doesn't shed much. Maybe you got one from a defective batch?? I would try exchanging it. Which brush do you have that's shedding? If you're thinking about investing in brushes, I like using a kabuki brush for applying the minerals.
cocopop - Jane Iredale is expensive, but I've heard good things about their make-up. I think it might provide a little better coverage than BM, and also more matte.

Thanks to all the advice in this thread, I just ordered some samples from ebay! I can't wait to get them. When I do, what kind of brush should I use? I don't want to invest in the kabuki brush, etc, until I know if I like it, but I also want to give it a fair shake. Any suggestions?
I have the same question as mrs_harris - do we have to use/is it better to use a "special" brush to apply this type of make up? My mom has Bare Minerals make up that she used only 1x and just gave to me and I'm planning on trying it out soon!
I used a regular brush at first (and buffed it in with a foam sponge) but it went on a little heavy for my tastes that way. I broke down not too long ago and ordered a kabuki brush (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml;jsessionid=MGDWS5SKKFDZBLAUCLCBXCQ?i d=P61040&cm_mmc=us_search-_-GG-_-br-_-bescen%20kabuki%20brush&_requestid=797115) (they have a different "head") from Beauty Strokes (http://www.beautystrokes.com/) on Amazon (I've used their brushes before and really liked them). You can also check out Crown brushes (they're cheap, but have a $25 minimum order).

As usual, someone beat me to my question. I was just about to ask about brushes shedding. I got the start-up kit from Sephora that comes with a kabuki and a flawless application brush and they are shedding BIG time on me. I have to brush off my face with my hand after applying the makeup or else I have little brushie hairs all over my face.

Re: Brush shedding--I only have this problem for about a week after I've washed the brushes. Weird that you guys are having this issue. I would definitely recommend the kabuki brush for the foundation, I was just using the brush that came in the kit and the kabuki gives me much better coverage faster.
I've bought my brushes on ebay--I got the kabuki (new in packaging) for about 1/2 off and I got the retractable brush for my warmth (blush) for a good price too. You just have to watch them and make sure the shipping isn't ridiculous.
Re: Jane Iredale, I used that before BE and I did like the compact, but it was expensive. I decided it wasn't as "clean" as the BE loose powder (felt like I had to wash the applicator a lot and I was transferring bacteria) and I was going through it too quickly. But I did find it on ebay once for only $27 or so for the compact. Application of JI was much faster, though.
Re: dry skin--BE won't dry your skin out, so I would just recommend a better moisturiser. OTOH, I have very oily skin, and this is the first foundation I've found that I don't have to reapply at all and I barely have to blot by the end of the day.

Hmm... that's a lot of you experiencing the shedding problem. I wonder if they've changed brush manufacturers? It was rumored that the brushes that came in the kit was not as good as the one purchased separately. Not sure how true that is, since mine were from the infomercial kit. But I do have to say that the BM brushes are not top notch quality. I don't really use them now since I love my kabuki! ;) There are plenty of better brushes out there on the market.
For applying the foundation mineral powder, you need a good face powder brush. You want the brush to be dense, not sparce, so it will pick up & hold the minerals. Also, look for brushes made of goat, pony, or squirrel hairs. Brushes made out of these are best for minerals, and will help you achieve a nice coverage.

Well, since I asked about it, I went ahead and bought the starter kit from the website. I bought the middle kit - 2 colors of foundation (fairly light and light), the warmer, mineral veil, 2 eyeshadows, a kabuki brush, a flawless finish brush, a concealer brush, and an eyeshadow brush. Cost $80, in two payments.
So. I've been using it for two weeks now and ... I freakin' LOVE this stuff. I have T-zone skin that's VERY oily on the nose, forehead, and chin, and VERY dry on the cheeks. This stuff goes on evenly, covers well, doesn't melt off my T-zone or clump up on my cheeks, and lasts all day.
It does take a tiny bit longer to apply in the morning ... but IMO well worth it. I've had several people comment on how good my skin is looking lately, which makes me laugh. They don't believe me when I say it's my makeup.
I want to buy another container of mineral veil and a brush to keep in my desk at work ... just to touch up. And I was also having a problem with my brushes shedding for the first week or so. I must admit, I got a bit frustrated with it so I finger combed all my brushes and pulled out all the loose hairs. Now ... the shedding has pratically stopped. I get a stray hair now and then, but nothing too annoying.
Anyway, thought I'd give my update .. since you all answered all my questions.

I'm having a hard time determining what shade I am (as far as the foundation powder goes). I hope to make it to a Sephora sometime to try out the stuff. This may be a weird question but how much 'darker' are the medium shades vs the light shades. Something tells me that I need to stick to the light group...(I have 'typical' Asian skin with slightly yellow undertones.)

I'm pretty sure you're either a 'fairly light', or 'light'. :) Those are the two I use. I also mix them together sometimes. The 'medium beige' looks pretty pink, even if the description says it has golden undertones.

OK, I will finally admit it... I am a BE junkie. I am a total addict and I will never be without it.
I have used it for about 2 years and I am to the point that I have so many eyeshadows etc, that when I get a new shipment from QVC, or we go to the store, my husband has to just either ignore me, or he just rolls his eyes at me.
I have found the key to this makeup is definitely to use a little bit and add more if you think you need it, and use the kabuki brush. They recently came out with a kabuki brush with a handle.. I cannot wait to get mine.
I have really light skin and I find even the light is too dark for me. The fairly light is perfect. If you are really unsure get one of the starter kits.. they have two shades in it.
If you buy any of their eyeshadows, liners or blushes, don't be afraid of them. Even when they look like they will be darker than dark, they go on really sheer and not heavy at all.
I love the tinted mineral veil too.. The regular is great, but I love the tinted one for afternoon touch ups or weekends that I dont want to bother with the foundation. It reminds me of a tinted moisterizer without the moisterizer.
Blu and lulu - thanks for the guidance!
tqsmom: I thought this was hilarious!

OK new question. My mom had a bunch of this make up laying around. From the looks of it, she bought a kit off of QVC and wound up not really using it. A lot of the stuff is still in sealed containers. The base/foundation powder, however is opened and used *and* it says "EXP 2/04" So my question is - what's up with the expiration date? The only item that even specifies an expiration date is the foundation powder. Can I ignore it?
I tried some of the stuff today and it rocks! I have to be careful about putting on too much though - a problem that hopefully will be rectified once I get my kabuki brush (today I just used a regular powder brush).

cc8 - A little goes a long way. Also make sure you buff it in. If you decide to go for a kabuki, I highly recommend the one from Bobbi Brown. I'm liking that one better than the BE kabuki, which is decent. The Bobbi Brown is a splurge though.
LeslieR - I assume you got the 20% 'friends & family' discount at Sephora for the BM kit. That's a really good price. I don't have any Clinique brushes, so I can't say. But if the face brush is pretty dense, you should be okay.

Yes, TSV=Today's Special Value. ;) It's technically not available till 9 pm (PST) tonight, when BM is on; thus, it's the TSV for 11/19. If you get a chance, watch it since Leslie does some pretty good demo on applying the make-up. Try typing in these item numbers:

#A71001 - Advance orders for Auto-Delivery (4 different kits shipped throughout the year), prior to tonight's show

QVC gets some kits exclusively for them only. So they can be pretty good values, even with the QVC shipping charges. The standard BE/BM kits can be found at the BE boutiques, Sephora, Ulta, etc... So it really depends on the kit, whether it's an exclusive or not. The TSV are always a good bargain at QVC though. I heard this kit will be available at Ulta, but at a the regular price of $54.50, so it will be available at the BE boutiques too. The QVC TSV will be $44.96 through 11/19 only; plus, it will be free shipping which doesn't happen a whole lot.
I'm hesitant to really get into the product line w/o trying the colors on for lipsticks, etc.
This is one of the few lipstick color I can wear, and I don't really like wearing lipstick. But I know what you mean about trying the color out first. For me, it's just easier to get it here and trying out at home. (Ever since I had DS, I'm all about online shopping! :o) If I don't like it, I just return it. QVC has a 30 day money back. And during the holidays, they extend it through the end of Jan., or something like that. (Gee, I sound like a sales pitch).

HeatherFL - No problem. ;) Oh BTW, do you use just the foundation, or mineral veil too? If you use both, you might want to try skipping the mineral veil and see how that goes. The mineral veil contains talc, and some people are allergic to talc. It normally cause itchiness and dryness, so I'm not so sure about breakouts, but maybe.
If it is the foundation, then it's the BM's forumlation, probably has to do with the amount of zinc and/or titanium Oxide, which is where they get the UVA protection. Also, there's mica and bismuth in it which causes problem for some people. Hope you'll figure it out. :o

Make sure you're washing your face really well at night. I had to switch to a creamier, heavier makeup remover to get all the foundation off my face - otherwise I noticed that when I used toner after washing, I was still seeing a trace of foundation coming off on the cotton pad I used. Leaving makeup on your face overnight, no matter how pure, will definitely cause you to break out.
I just make sure I wash my face very very thoroughly at night ... and then moisturize well before bed.

I use a separate thing by L'Occitane for my eyes and Cetaphil as a general moisturizer. otherwise I noticed that when I used toner after washing, I was still seeing a trace of foundation coming off on the cotton pad I used.
Since toner was mentioned I think it's a good opportunity to educate everyone on toner's real purpose. Toner should not be used as an 'after cleanser' to your real cleanser although I think a lot of woman expect that this is what it is for (not you in particular - just using your post as an example). Toner is actually used to restore the pH balance to your skin after cleansing. A good toner should always come in a pump bottle, should be misted on after cleansing and patted into the skin with the pads of your middle & ring finger.
Heather - try cleaning your kabuki brush after each use. Since you are basically buffing the product into your face, you could be spreading bacteria from one spot to another causing breakouts.
bluhimmy - yep I got the TSV. I was completely shocked to witness how popular the Bare Minerals stuff was/is on QVC. It sold out really fast. Amazing. Of course, the way QVC promotes the stuff makes people rush to order it (ie: limited quantities, constantly announcing how much of the product is left, etc. Smart marketing people over there!)
I also didn't really realize (until today) what a great deal the TSV is - if I were to buy all the components separately, it would cost me A LOT more.

It doesn't even feel like I have makeup on!:D Now I'm wanting to get into the liner shadows and such. I never wear eyeshadow-maybe only on special occasions like a wedding or something, so I don't think I need to get into that. Definitely going to need to buy some blush-I'm a huge blush girl. I'm also a fairly light/light, but with warm undertones. (Not sure if you're warm or cool.) Some of the popular blushes are: thistle, golden gate. secret, and compassion. I also use warmth, warm radiance and rose radiance for blush, even though they are all over face colors. Oh, the blushes can be worn as lip colors too. Just dip a lip balm in it, or add it to a gloss. :) I recommend you get some samples to test out first. I think the blush jars are huge!

No, it's was okay for me, and I'm happy with what I'm currently using.

Never tried their brow kit. The only masacara I've tested out is the one that came with the lastet Gift of Giving kit on QVC. It's called Big Tease. It has a 2-sided brush, and it seemed good when I tested it out the other day.
vjel - I use Smashbox's Brow Tech, and I like that one a lot. Or I'll use MAC shadow for my brows, and cheap clear masacara or hair gel to tame the brows. The Lips To Go-Go, that was a set of mini quicksticks right? I have 2 quicksticks, spice and fig, and I like them. It's not a QVC exclusive item, so they sell them at the BE boutiques; and Sephora has them too, but it's currently sold out online, but the stores might have it in stock.
Heather - try cleaning your kabuki brush after each use. Since you are basically buffing the product into your face, you could be spreading bacteria from one spot to another causing breakouts.Stacy, thanks for this info. I was wondering why I was starting to break out elsewhere on my face. Thanks!

bluhimmy, thanks for the tips! I decided to check the cleanser last night and it is 12% glycolic acid which I cannot use since I am nursing. Guess I'll just stick with my Cetaphil and washcloth routine for now. Off to ebay to look for blush samples!:D

I use a prosessional brand called Cinema Secrets - you can order it through their website at www.cinemasecrets.com. If you want an easy spray cleaner for daily use I would go for Trish McEvoy's.

So you know where my screen name came from then. Sorry. That's the down side of having pets. How old was he?
Chesai (Japanese for "little one that's loved and pronounced cheese-eye with a soft "s" in cheese) was a few years old when he died. Unfortunately, he got out of his kennel in the car on the way to the vet and put his paw on the automatic window and somehow rolled it down and fell out of the window. It was awful. My mom pulled all of us out of school that day. I miss that cat and I still dream about him. He was a seal point. Just beautiful. <hijack over>
Thanks for the brush cleaner advice, dollface! I didn't know the right one to get either!

Ok so I went to Sephora and thought I would try the BM that everyone is loving on this thread....
I proceeded to do the tap, swish whatever and I guess used too much. There was this cloud of powder which unfortunately I walked into and breathed.
Let me tell you there is nothing like "snorting" BM I had such pain in my nose and a week later it still feels raw. Has anyone done this or had this experience or am I just a makeup mess?
Have to say it has scared me away from BM.... but in retrospect it is kind of funny
A while back I purchased the Complexion Booster Kit (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P110421&categoryId=C10470) from Sephora. I wanted to try warmth and glee so I figured it was a good deal.
Then today, I was at Ulta and picked up a BE shadow package (not listed on their site, the Sephora site, QVC or BE). It was $20 and included two eyeshadows, a lip color and a brush all in a velvet bag.
What was I thinking?!?! I work from home and only wear make-up MAYBE once a week. Sheesh. Well, it's very pretty (purple and a sparkly pale pink) and you better believe I'll be wearing it ALL on Thanksgiving.

I dunno ... banged the container? I've been using it for a few weeks now and I cannot get enough powder base out of the container to create a "cloud". Not to say I can't get enough to do my face, but it just doesn't come out that fast.
What the heck were you doing with it? :)

I am completely clueless about this stuff, but am interested in trying it. I want to ask for it for Christmas. There's a trial kit you can get at Sephora? Could I just send someone there to get it, or do I have to pick out colors? I'm very fair. How many steps/products are there?

There's a trial kit you can get at Sephora? Could I just send someone there to get it, or do I have to pick out colors? I'm very fair. How many steps/products are there?I ordered mine off of the website, but IIRC you can get one of the two different starter kits at Sephora (that's where I went to look at the stuff before I ordered it). One starter kit is more basic, the other includes extra brushes and eyeshadows (the one I got). They come in 2 options - one with fairly light and light base and one with 2 darker tones. I got the first and use the "fairly light" as I'm very pale! :)
The basic kit w/out the eyeshadow comes with (I think):
2 shades of foundation
1 warmth
1 mineral veil (powder)
1 kabuki brush (for applying foundation)
1 maximum coverage brush (for applying foundation to conceal)
1 flawless face brush (for applying warmth and mineral veil)
I moisturize my face out of the shower, apply the foundation, apply mineral veil, and then touch my temples and cheeks with the warmth.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Ladies! I got my samples that I ordered from ebay and I like it a lot! I have figured out that I need the Fairly Light color, and I'm getting ready to order from Sephora. My question now is this: should I just buy the foundation or should I get the starter kit? I've just been using a Sonia Kashuk brush and it isn't the easiest thing to use for the foundation, so I'm going to need to get the kabuki brush. Sephora doesn't list the ounces and I was wondering how much product you get in the kit versus a la carte. And, I'm curious about the concealer - does it work to just apply more foundation to undereyes and redness or should I get something else?
Thanks in advance - you ladies are truly BE enablers!

I purchased mine in a kit from Sephora at first just so I could get all the brushes and everything.
I actually like that the jars are smaller b/c they don't take up much room, I purchased a separate jar of mineral veil recently to "refill" my smaller kit jar and its perfect. :)

Heather, I PM'd you! :)
Here's a random tip I wish I had KNOWN before I ordered the Bare Minerals stuff from QVC: You can get the same kits/packages at Bare Minerals STORES as you can on QVC.
It might just be me, but on the infomercial, they make it sound like you can only get certain product combos/kits via QVC which is so *not* the case.
I was at a Bare Minerals store 2 Sundays ago and saw the exact same stuff as was shown on QVC/the infomercial. I overheard a fellow customer make the same comment re: QVC folks making people think you can get "exclusive" stuff on QVC only.

QVC folks making people think you can get "exclusive" stuff on QVC only.
They are tricky, aren't they?:( There are some kits that are exclusive to QVC. But the standard BM kits are available at the BE boutiques, Sephora, Ulta, etc... It just depends on the kit your looking at, so you have to do a little homework to check before buying from QVC. I won't buy from QVC unless it was a super good deal, and it can't be purchased anywhere else.
Oh, the Gift of Giving kit (GOG) that QVC had offered as TSV a couple of weeks ago is available at the boutiques and stores. However, if you ordered the AD, then there will be 3 additional GOG kits (different products) coming your way through the rest of the year (the next GOG kit is being shipped in March). In the past, the AD kits are QVC exclusives, and this is "suppose" to be the case with the GOG AD too. ;)

With regards to getting the TSV at other places, QVC offered free shipping and Sehpora may carry it but it's a few dollars more and you have to pay shipping. I always double check prices and free shipping always seals the deal for me.

Okay..I have been using the Bare Minerals about a month now and my face has been breaking out! Mainly on my chin area and a few blemishes in the hairline. Normally, I would only get a few (small) zits around AF so I am convinced that it is the makeup doing this. Some of the ones on my chin have been cystic like. I am still on my same bc pills and have not made any other changes that I am aware of could contribute to this. I have also cleaned my brushes. WTH?!!! I love this makeup and don't want to quit using it but it is not worth it to have breakouts. Anyone else had this problem with BM?

BM actually made my skin better. And most people I've heard from have said that it's been great for their skin, too, but there's always the possibility that your skin just doesn't like the product. Everyone's skin is different.

I just bought this starter kit from Ulta, it's only $60 right now.
http://content.ulta.com/images/products/large/2121821.jpg
Comes with two shades of foundation, Warmth face color, Mineral Veil, Flawless Face Brush, Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush, Full Coverage Kabuki Brush, cleanser, and How-to DVD.
I added on my own the Bisque and a Rose Radiance face color set with the face color, lip gloss, and a Heavenly Face Brush.
I wouldn't have wanted to start out without every item in that set, I wouldn't have liked the product as much cause I need a lot of coverage and concealing, so I really needed the concealer brush and full-coverage kabuki brush. I liked starting with two different shades of foundation, because the first one I chose to try didn't work out as well as the second. The DVD was also very, very helpful. It seems like technique is very important with this product.
So, I'm a first time user, but like I said, I probably wouldn't have gone any further with the brand if I didn't have the different things in that kit to try. I would say to start out, if you can't get a kit like this, get the foundation, the warmth face color, the mineral veil, the bisque if you need a lot of concealing, and definitely try the brushes: the concealer brush is awesome, the face brush is good, the kabuki brush if you need extra coverage. I would try to purchase a kit like that, though. It was only $60. I was with a friend when she made her first Bare Minerals purchase and she spent over $100 getting started and didn't get as much as I did getting the kit for $60.
I really liked the makeup and will continue with it. I'm also going to try the shadow liner, eye shadows, and some of the other face colors.
Does anyone have a favorite eye shadow color or colors? I'm fair with blue eyes and blonde hair. Any suggestions? I'm terrible at choosing colors.

jbenny75
12-28-2005, 01:38 PM
I saw the kit in Light/Fairly Light and Medium/Medium Beige. I asked at Ulta what shades I should get. There is also a little video the B.M. website that tells you how to choose if you were gonna get it online. From what I hear, you shouldn't worry too much about getting the wrong shade cause it's easy to mix two together.

OMG, I love this stuff. I've been using it only about a week, and my skin looks better. I had a red, nasty rosacea-looking rash on my chin that was diagnosed as perioral acne by several dermatologists. I hadn't had it for quite awhile, but it popped up after I got PG. I haven't bothered going to the dermatologist for it until I talk to my OBGYN, cause I'm not sure if there's anything I can use. But after using the B.M. products, the redness has faded and is almost completely gone. I think my liquid foundation was drying and aggravating it, but I was just putting on more and more foundation trying to cover it, so it kept getting worse. I'm ecstatic. I'm going to be a devotee for life. I don't think I can use the cleanser and skin rever-upper right now because I'm PG, but products with glycolic acid and salycylic acid have always worked really well for me, so I can't wait to try them.

I just got the starter kit for Christmas, and I have some questions. This is a dumb one, I know, but if you mix 2 colors for your "perfect foundation color", do you mix this on a daily basis? If so, how do you mix it? Just dump a little of each... in the lid? Or just put the brush in each in turn? I am usually running late so I apply my make up during my commute (on the train) and I am perplexed as to how this will work for that, nevermind adding mixing colors, etc. Any help on that front would be appreciated.
Also, what do you clean your brushes with? And, I only used my I think maximum coverage brush? to apply everything today (the first time wearing it) and tons and tons of hairs came out of the brush. Did this happen to everyone the first few times, or will this happen every time? It covered the front of my shirt and the sink - also not good for applying on the way to work!
And, I didn't watch the video - is that a necessity?
TIA - I've heard so many good things that I would like to make this work for me, if I can!

laura I have not personally mixed my colors but I think a lot of people actually mix the whole containers together or just tap a little out of each one. I would say that with this stuff it will be hard for you to apply it while on the train because it can get messy. I would put on your foundation before you leave the house and then the rest of your makeup on the train if you can.
For cleaning the brushes... they sell a cleaner but the lady at Ulta told me just to use baby shampoo. I have been doing that and it seems to work just fine and is cheap too! My maximun coverage brush that came with the starter kit sheds like crazy (and it never seemed to stop even after weeks of use and cleaning)..it annoyed the heck out of me so I bought the full size kabuki brush and it does not shed at all and it seems to work much better for the whole buffing action.

I don't mix my colors in the winter, but I do find in the summer I can wear a little more of the warmth, so I don't mix the foundations together in a container, but I do tap a little of the warmth and my regular foundation into my palm and then apply with the brush.
A Bare Escentuals store just opened up in a mall near me, I am going to try a soft gold eyeshadow and the quick sticks for lips...i think that is what they are called!

I'm following the directions for the makeup (swirl, tap, buff, etc.), but I need to repeat these steps a few times before I get the coverage I want. Not to mention the extra steps if I use the mineral veil and warmth. Maybe it won't take as long once I get the hang of it.

Well, mineral veil is just a setting powder, so if you already use a setting powder, that shouldn't really be adding time. And warmth is really sort of a blush, so if you take into account how much time you would normally be using to put on your blush, that shouldn't be too different. As far as repeating the steps for the foundation, if you really load up your brush, you won't need to do that. Give yourself a little while to get used to it and get your system down, and I bet that you'll find it really doesn't take more time. :)

Which brush are you using? I found that I wasn't impressed with the coverage the Flawless Face brush gave me, but the coverage of the Kabuki brush was perfect. I think it's supposed to give you more coverage. I also needed to do some concealing first, using my foundation and the Max Coverage Concealer brush. I don't really think it takes me that much longer than regular concealer, foundation, etc, but if it does take a little longer, that's fine with me because it looks 100% better. I haven't found it to be messy at all. How much are you using? If you haven't watched the How-to DVD or the How-to videos on the B.M. website, they are very helpful.

Really - longer? I guess in the beginning it takes a bit, but now that I have the hang of it, I can apply it all within a 5-10 mins. I think that's pretty fast. Plus I don't feel like it sits on my face as heavily (or heavily at all) as MAC.
Give it a week or two, I'm sure it'll get easier/shorter.

Yep, baking soda. I read it on another thread here in F&B, and thought I would give it a try. I have normal-to-oily skin, and around my visit from AF I'm prone to breakouts on my chin and along my jawline. Basically all I do is dump a little bit of baking soda in my hand and mix it with a little bit of water so it makes a paste, then wash my face with the paste. It leaves your skin feeling super clean and smooth, with no weird scents or soap buildup or exfoliating beads left behind. It's got to be the cheapest beauty trick I've ever heard of, I think my box of baking soda cost me all of about $0.89!

I agree w/ a PP that as a new user, it's taking me much longer than my usual routine to apply the BM, but I'm assuming once I get the hang of it, it will go much easier. Part of the problem is that I haven't "matched" myself, so I mix my colors on a daily basis instead of just mixing the whole containers, etc. That means I'm dipping in to both pots each time I apply. Plus I have found it to be a little messy, but that seems to be lessening over time, also.
Also, for me personally it's taking longer b/c I didn't use "foundation" before - I just used a 'foundation' pressed powder. I could apply all of my make up (powder, blush, eyeshadow [2-3 colors], eyeliner, curl lashes, mascara) in about 5 minutes, and this probably doubles my total time. Or a combination of BM and switching to gel eyeliner.
I think I'm going to go to my local BM store and see if they have any tips for me.

Ladies, I've been using this for a few weeks now and I too love the way it makes my skin feel except for one thing. I have an oily t-zone and by the end of the day my forehead is shine city with this stuff. I'm not using a regular moisturizer, just cleansing, toning, and then the bare vitamins. If anyone else has an oily forehead I would love to hear your experiences/suggestions.
Thanks!
