Okay from everything I've heard, I'm dying to try BM! But I have to say the info is pretty overwhelming? Can someone give me the "must have" basics to start out with? I don't wear any eye makeup other than mascara, so should I just be looking at a foundation, mineral veil and brush to start with??
The easiest thing to do (I think) is to just buy the starter kit (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P116619&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=5737).

Thanks ignutzz! The local mall by me just opened a store there, I assume they sell the kit? Otherwise I would guess sephora does.....

Yep, they should have it. Sephor and Ulta also carry it and I believe you can order kits from QVC too.
I've tried matte, semi-mattee and intensive. They all left me really shiny. They just don't work for me, I guess. Oh well!
did you use the finishing dust? i heard that helps, but i haven't tried myself (i read about it on makeupvalley.com)

I still haven't received my EM samples... however, I am thinking of returning my BM kit... do any of you know if Sephora accepts returns of the kits if they have been used?
I used BM for a couple of days and all of a sudden I got all these little bumps all over my face, so I must have some kind of allergic reaction!

still not really impressed by the coverage. I feel like my skin is drying out after I have been using this product.

Yup. Tried the finishing dust. This stuff just doesn't work for me, I guess.
kugrrly -- If BM is drying you out, then maybe EM would be good for you since it seemed to not dry me out enough (hence the shininess).

nawsgirl: Yes, Sephora (in-store) will accept returns on anything you don't like (one of the many reasons I love Sephora). I'm not sure if this is what's happening with you, but I found the first time that I tried BM that I wasn't washing my brushes often enough, and that caused me to breakout. You could try washing your brushes more and see if that helps. It could also be an allergic reaction. Although it's supposed to be good for people with sensitive skin, it doesn't mean that it's not possible to have an allergic reaction to it.
kugrrly: Are you using any kind of acne products on your face? The reason I ask is because I started using Differin recently, and now I have dry patches on my face. The BM seemed to accentuate that. I'm using a tinted moisturizer in place of the BM for now. Maybe you just need more moisturizer or a foundation with moisture?

I used the Silk Makeup (http://silkymakeup.com/free-mineral-makeup-sample-p-408.html) free kit for the first time yesterday. I really like it! I am still new at applying it but it really covered well! It wasn't shiny and it kept my skin looking good all day - I am usually a little oily. I still need to play with it a bit more but I wore it to work yesterday and today and I really think my skin looks great! It also took a lot less time to put it on then I thought it would. I am definitely a mineral makeup convert!

Well I have been using BM for about a month now. I have gotten used to applying the right amount for coverage. My skin has been super happy! I have not had the kind of breakouts that I had when I was using regular foundation.

I use BE as well and absolutly LOVE it! During the summer months there are a lot of days when I have to go straight from work to the ball field (my son plays baseball) and since I live in the south it gets really hot and humid. I found that when I start sweating and the make-up starts to run off it doesn't get splotchy or streaky at all. It just kind of goes away. I have very sensetive skin and BE has really helped eliminate break outs and the such.
I get my supply on eBay for a lot less than any store sells them (I just love eBay)!

Alright girls, i have a problem! I have been a faithful user of BE for the past 2 years, i loved it. Then, i started having some skin issues, l would describe them as skin colored bumps on my forehead and cheeks. I was on vacation about 3 weeks ago, so i wore no makeup whatsoever. my skin cleared up nicely. Now, i have been using just the mineral veil because i still have some color from my tan.
anyone experience a sudden reaction to the product?

Do you wash your brushes on a regular basis? It could be oil and bacteria on your brushes. I know I don't wash my brushes as often as I should.

Yes, i wash the brushes on a regular basis because i don't like the color to become muddy. Thanks though!

Just bought the BE starter kit (light) a few days ago, and I've gotta say- I'm a fan! Still working on exactly how much to use to get good coverage without looking overly made up, but still, wow!
Are the other products- eyeshadows, liners, lipsticks, worth looking into as well?

I love the bisque concealor, it's always the first thing that I run out of. Although that could be because it comes in such a small container!
I've been wearing "soul" eyeshadow since this summer and I still probably have about 80% of it left, so I think that was a great bargain. I've tried some of the glimmers before and didn't really like them, but that is because I don't like a lot of glimmer in my everyday makeup.
I still haven't tried any of their lip products & I'm curious about them as well. I'm a full on lip gloss whore, I have so many lip glosses!
I second the bisque. It's a life-saver! I use some of their eyeshadows, but they're not great. I do like the blushes, though -- I use Beauty and sometimes I use Rose Radiance as a blush.

There is a swap board on the Makeup Alley site:

Also, you could definitely sell it on eBay. :)

Thank you!! After a few days of use I am seriously loving this stuff.
Here are two questions ya...
If you only had $25 (gift certificate) to spend on BE, and all you owned thus far was the "starter kit", what would you buy next?
I went onto ebay and found lots of "samples" for sale. Samples people made themselves, apparently, from full-sized packages. Has anybody bought any of these? Is it safe? Is there a seller you recommend?
Thanks!

I know that several posters on this thread have done it and they have sellers that they recommend. If you read through this thread you'll get ideas about what to buy and who they recommend. (I know that 53 pages is a lot of reading but it might help).

I am using Bare Essectuals and I am in LOVE with it. The coverage is great and I love the look of it. I use the "Fairly Light" and the "Mineral Veil" - and I got a blush from one of my friends who used to use it. I don't know the name. I went onto eBay recently and got a order of 5 samples for like $5 to try them out. With the samples, you get enough for about 20-30 uses and it gives you a great idea of the colors before you buy it. I'm willing to swap my "Starter Kit" colors that I am not using if anyone is interested.

If anybody loved the results of BE but it made their face sting (it did me! and I hear this is kind of common), Ulta has a mineral powder foundation that works great and does not make my face sting. I had heard that it was the bismuth that makes the stinging--but the Ulta has bismuth and doesn't do it so I don't know what it is about BE that affects me!
Thanks for posting about the Ulta line Etoile!! I'm ready to pick up a new foundation, and while I love my BE, I do get the sting (it fades) so I'm open to try another brand. Has anyone tried any of the mineral lines available on eBay? I don't really need anything beyond the actual foundation.

I've tried a couple of the other brands off eBay and just don't like them as much. They all seem much heavier/thicker. I can't remember exactly what brands they were, but after 2 of doing the same thing I decided to stick with BE.
Anyone tried the new Loreal mineral makeup line?
Dani, thanks! I'm thinking that I might just try a small thing of foundation for $10, if it works, taht's great. If not, I won't feel so broken about it.

After fighting with oily skin for the last several months, a friend convinced me to start using BM foundation. I finally bought the starter kit this weekend from Ulta (2 foundations, Warmth, Glee, Handi Buki brush, Maximum coverage concealer brush, and Flawless Face (I think?) brush). I must say, my shininess and oiliness was reduced by about 75% by the end of the day!
One thing I'm confused by, though. When I watched the DVD it said to use the Flawless Face brush for everything (except concealing) -- foundation, warmth, and glee. And I know that a kabuki brush is for more coverage. Is that what the Handy Buki is for? I know it's not the same brush as what most of you use, but is it for more coverage? Also, the girl at Ulta told me not to use the same brush for my mineral veil as I use for my other minerals since the mineral veil has corn starch in it and you don't want to mix that with the other minerals. Do you guys use different brushes? I really don't want to buy another brush just for that, and I tried using my MAC blush brush (which is what she said to do), but it just seemed to soft for that.

Mrs Pell Before I had 2 kabuki brushes, I used the same one for both foundation and mineral veil and it worked just fine. Just make sure to clean it periodically.
I haven't used the Handy Buki, but that may be a good option for the mineral veil too.
I've used MAC blush brushes for mineral blush and they work well. I don't think it'd work very well for the mv.

PurpleRose

Etoile, I clean mine with baby shampoo. Just rinse the brush under warm water, put a little baby shampoo in your hand, swirl the brush around in it, and rinse until the water's clear. Then lay the brush flat on a towel to dry. I'm sure you can use brush cleanser too, but baby shampoo is much cheaper. :)
Question: Has anyone tried the Park Place Princess set that Sephora has? I'm intrigued by the colors, but the eyeshadow looks a little dark, and I'm not sure if I can pull it off.

Thanks! After playing around with things for a week now, I've figured out that I like the handy buki for both the MV and the foundation and I use the flawless face brush for the warmth and the glee. I did just order a kabuki brush off of ebay (for $12! :) ), so I'm thinking I'll use that for the foundation and the handy buki for the MV.
I'm really liking this stuff! I put the MV on first, then about 3 layers of the foundation, and then warmth, then MV, then do my eyes and lips and then another layer of MV. I'm about 90% less oily/shiny at the end of my 12 hour day! :)
I have found that it takes me longer to do my makeup, but I think that it's because I realize that I can make it look so much better than it used to and I'm playing around with it more. I used to just throw my liquid foundation on, then the other stuff and be done in about 5 minutes total. Now it takes me about 10 minutes just to do my foundation, concealing, and warmth! :o

I ordered a kabuki brush off ebay the other day and I got a package from them today. Unfortunately, they sent me the wrong person's order. They sent me the "Ponder eye kit." I really want to keep it!! :o It's the envy glimmer, pond e/s, live liner shadow, double ended shaping brush, and a cute little bag! Unfortunately, my husband has a conscience and emailed them to tell them. :p Here's hoping they just tell me to keep it b/c it was their error and then send me the brush too. Yeah, right! ;)

With the Get Started Kit, you get two foundations. I found that the kit at Sephora (http://www.sephora.com/brands/bare-escentuals/brand_assortment.jhtml?brandId=5737&categoryId=S11505&pCat=C115) to be the best deal. The kit comes with everything you need. I bought my kit in September and the only thing I have ran out of is mineral veil. Hope that helps! If you have anymore questions just ask!

Thanks, I read all about the get starter kit, I am just not sure what shade I am. I think I might be a mix of light and med, and I don't want to get a kit with one shade I won't use. It may be better for me to just buy single, plus the ones with the kit seem tiny

For samples you can also try http://www.everydayminerals.com/g?t=kits. They do a free startup sample kit for the cost of shipping. The colors I have look to be identical in shade to the BM shades I have and they give an option of matte finish which I think I like better than the sheen BM leaves. Once my BM foundation is gone I think I might switch to EM at least for foundation.
hmbay, thanks for the reminder about EM. I just picked up a sample pack and purchased a small finishing powder. I'm basically all out of my current BM stuff with only my travel pack left to get me through the next couple of days (which should be fine since I don't wear make up all that much during the week)

For foundation I like EM better than BM. I feel like the coverage is better and like a PP said, they give you the option of a matte finish which is great for my oily skin. I'm about out of my little samples, and I'll probably be making a real order in the near future. One caveat is that their blushes all seem to have some glitter to them which is not for me at all.

I had posted a while ago about wanting the BE Park Place Princess set (at Sephora). I did end up getting it, but I don't think the e/s color works for me--it's darker than it appears in the pic. (It makes me look a little tired.) I'm going to play around with it and see if I can make it work. I like the rest of the kit.

I went to a local salon today for a haircut and have a BE consult while I was there. I am a Fair in foundation, but I actually bought the med starter kit and a seperate large foundation in fair. I figure with summer coming I can mix the medium's in with my fair. So far I love this stuff! I have had it on since this morning at 9a and it still looks great! I am hoping I get either the "Beyond the Basics" or "Get Started Eyes" kit for my b-day next week from MIL/FIL :)
I checked out that Moxie kit at Sephora today. While I liked some of the colors, I just thought $54 was a little steep for my tastes (keep in mind, I only wear make up *maybe* twice a week!) I did pick up a baby buki for traveling though.

$54 is a lot to spend at one time (to me) but I thought it was a pretty good deal, since the e/s are full size and it includes the 3 brushes. The blush is going to last me forever too, considering how concentrated the color is! Plus with Sephora, I knew if I was unhappy with it, I could just take it back. (Love them!)
BTW, the longer I wear Magnetized, (the light green color) the more gold it turns. Stays on very well, though, and I don't use e/s primer.

I've been following this thread off and on for a few years now and this is probably a silly question. Is there a difference between BM and BE or are they just the same brand?
I've been using Youngblood mineral make (http://www.ybskin.com/)up for about a year now and I like it a lot. Being Asian, I have had trouble finding the right color that closely matches my skin and their Honey seems to be the closest thing. :) I think I actually went onto Amazon and ordered through them.
I have tried L'oreal's mineral makeup but had to return it. It really irritated my face.

I rarely wear makeup anymore, and just use drugstore stuff, but I notice as I get older (33), more tired, and my face is "fuller" ;) , I need something to perk up my dull-complexion and tired look. I have a medium skin-tone, buff, but with a red-ruddy undertone (ugly!). and Im still prone to small breakouts. when I actually DO my makeup, I usually use a foundation/powder 1-step combo, a dab of neutral warm blush, neutral rosy/brown shadow with a creamy colored accent, brown eye liner and black/brown grease-free mascara, and light rose/mauve lipstick. Normally though, since Im a SAHM, I just throw on some foundation/powder and a dab of blush.
Anyway, Im interested in Bare Minerals but Im not sure where to start. How is BM different than going to the mall and getting a make-over at Elizabeth Arden or something? Where do I start without investing a couple hundred dollars?
My main focus is covering up my ruddy skin and evening out my complexion.

Everyday Minerals -- I used it again yesterday and I have to say that I love it! It's just as light and breathable as the BE products are. It still lasted through the day and blended in well with I was glistening from the heat - just like BE. The two things I really liked better than BE...I liked the matte formula that EM has and I really, really liked the lack of burn.
Pros - I definitely like it better than Ulta's personal mineral powder line and I love that it seems to work just as well as BE but for a fraction of the cost. The small sizes are also nice for travel - very nice indeed - and reason enough to give them a try if you ask me!
Cons - I picked up the sample pack which included a blush. I chose natural and while I can't imagine using it as a blush, it makes a great eye shadow. Also, that particular blush seemed a bit sparkle-y (though I believe an PP mentioned that about their blushes).

Well---I ordered a sample kit of Everyday Minterals since you said it didn't burn you (i have major stinging issues with BE--Ulta doesn't do that to me, though) and since you liked it better than Ulta's. Will review when my kit comes! Thanks Katy!
I got cool sandy/fair original glo and semi-matte, and cool fair semi-matte foundations, and Nick Nack blush, and multi-tasking concealer. We'll see how they do... I'm happy with my Ulta, but I did like the BE just a little better as far as shimmeriness (I do like to have a little glow about me. :) )

Has anyone tried the BE primer?
Now that it's getting warmer, my makeup is meeeelllllting off by lunchtime. I tend to be oily in general, but I've always been able to keep it under control by using a toner before I apply my foundation. Now, not so much.
I was at Ulta tonight, and had the smashbox primer in my hand, but could not justify the $36. The saleslady was clueless that BE even made primer, but it looks like I can order it from Sephora for $21.
I'm hoping someone has tried it and can tell me it will solve all my problems. :)

FallingforPhil I've heard the Laura Mercier primer is also good. It's only a little cheaper thant he SM at $30, but you get almost twice as much.
I just placed an order from Sephora online and can't wait to get it!
-Urban Decay Primer Potion
-BE 3 piece blush set
-BE well rested concealer
-BE eye liner in coffee bean
-She Uemura eyelash curler
Yay!

Thanks, mel7dog--I'll have to look into the Laura Mercier. I wonder if they carry it at ULTA???
you know, many other companies now make a primer. In fact, Boots, over at Target makes a primer for a fraction of the price. I've also used the Mary Kay one and liked it. Check the shelves for something that's either a Mattifier or a Primer and you should be fine.

FallingforPhil--they have 1/2 size tube of Smashbox primer for $15 at Sephora--I really like it and the tube has lasted me several months. The nice thing also is that in the tube you get 1/2 the amount as in the glass bottle for less than 1/2 the price---and you don't have the problem of not being able to get the last bit out of the bottom of the bottle.
Katy: THANK YOU for posting about Everyday Minerals. I am so in love. I got the sample kit in the mail yesterday and am wearing a full face of everyday minerals today. I was surprised that the "Fair" is actually TOO fair for my skin--I am often not able to pull off even the lightest foundation shade of most brands. The Fair Medium in Original Glo is absolutely perfect, does not sting me, gives a gorgeous shimmer and lasted all day even through sweating. Same for the blush--gorgeous, super-pigmented. LOVE it. Will be ordering a full-sized set.
Etoile - don't thank me, I just purchased it one someone else's recommendation. But yes, I'm loving it as well. I think I'll also be buying some full size containers once I've run through the samples. Did you get any "setting powder" (mineral veil)? I got the lightest (whitest) one without any color, but I'm not certain that I like it. I'm thinking that I might want a hint of color. Dunno.

After mentioning EM I actually tried out my samples again and agree I love the foundation more than BM since I prefer a matte look. However when I tried to order full sized foundations last night their order process seemed to be messed up and I was never able to complete an order. I'll try again in a few days. I would be interested in seeing what setting powders people chose from there. I don't have any samples so I'm not sure what to pick but I have 3 BM mineral veil jars to get through first. I just planned to order some foundations and some concealers at first.

Katy--no I didn't get a sample of the setting powder--but I think the BM Mineral Veil (untinted) is too light too. Which one did you get, the Silk Dust or the Finishing Dust? Based on the swatches the Finishing Dust has a bit of a tint, I think, but there's also a tinted Finishing Dust--I wonder if that will be too dark though.
Etoile - I got the silk dust (small size). I'm not sure I like how kabuki white it is (though it doesn't go on white white). I think when I order my foundation I'll probably get another small finishing powder with a bit of color maybe - worse case, I can mix the two.

I have also received and loved the EM samples I got! I have used BM but I HATED that I looked shiny eventhough I'm really not all that oily! I loved the blush color I got from EM too, I know some of you didn't like it, I got swimming pool. The only thing about EM is that by the end of the night there is only a slight hint of the blush left on me and I do start to shine a little. Am I the only one? Those of you with the finishing viel, does that help the makeup "stay" better? I may be trying a primer underneath to see if that helps any and it has been hot here, so may I tend to sweat a little too much :o But once I run out of EM I'm definately ordering more!

Everyday Minerals 10% off discount code: wqzaJb
Case sensitive and good until the end of May. Good for 10% off before shipping charges are added.
I'm not so sure I get the point of using a primer with mineral makeup. I thought one of the perks of using mineral makeup is that it "sets" when it actually mixes with your skin's oils. In fact, that's one of the reasons it lasts as long as it does and you don't sweat it off. So if you use a primer first you'd block your natural oils from mixing with your makeup and giving it a good set, thus losing that natural, non-makeup look that makes mineral makeup so great. Without that set, your makeup wouldn't last nearly as long. You'd also lose the natural, "minerals are so much better for your skin" and "so good for you, you could sleep in it"-ness.
I don't have anything against primer though, in fact, it's the only way I'd use liquid foundation again, but I just don't quite get how it would work with mineral makeup.
Re: primer w/mineral makeup:
I find that during the summer months, BM melts off my face if I don't use a primer. I think my skin's too oily for any makeup to last all day in the summer w/o a primer. I know that it doesn't make much sense (what with the losing the "natural" aspect and the makeup no longer being able to "bond" with your natural oils), but for whatever reason, primer helps immensely with my BM staying power
I have the same problem as MLA. My skin is very oily and the foundation will not stay set when it is warm outside or if you are in a crowded club, etc... Using a primer helps a ton. I found that I'm not fond of the BM primers, but I've been using the Laura Mercier primer with good success. I haven't tried the Smashbox photo-finish primer yet, but want to get a sample to see if it's better than the LM. :)

Oh No! The Itch!
I just started using the Everyday Minerals (I'm working through my sample kit) and I thought that it didn't make me itch/burn--but the other day I got really hot and it was itching/burning! I'm so disappointed. It wasn't as bad as it was when I used BE; not unbearable but definitely uncomfortable.
A few questions for those who've tried the EM:
1. Did you try original glo and semi matte or matte? Did the matte or semi matte make you itch less?
2. Did you itch at first in hot weather but then as your skin became more used to mineral makeup it stopped itching so bad?
I LOVE the EM and the way it looks and I will be so disappointed if I have to stop using it. I may keep using it even if I keep itching--I get such a gorgeous look from it!
1) I picked up matte and had zero itching/burning, even when working up a light sweat
2) this is kind of how BM worked for me...it would itch/burn at first, then go away. Unless I started to sweat, then the itch/burn would start up again and then eventually fade away again.
I thought I heard that the itch/burn is from the titanium (??) or oxide (??) or bismuth (??) or something. It was some particular ingredient (that I wish I remembered). Must be the shine that you like that brings it on according to the few things I've just read.
I found this doing a google search for BM and burning (bolding mine)...I feel bad for the women who have tried it, and had disappointing results. The reason some women have a negative reaction to bareMinerals is the bismuth oxychloride, which is a precipitate byproduct of a chemical reaction between bismuth chloride and water. This is used to give the makeup the "glow" that is seen in the foundation, and especially in the all-over face colors.
And this (again, bolding mine)...According to an article I just read, Bare Minerals contain 5 ingredients: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, mica, iron oxide and bismuth oxychloride. The Bismuth Oxychloride can cause skin irritation in some women. Many women who think they can't wear mineral make-up because of itching and breakouts are reacting to bismuth oxychloride. Bismuth Oxychloride is also what gives Bare Minerals foundations their characteristic sheen.
So, you might look for Mineral Makeup without the Bismuth Oxychloride. Larenim Mineral Makeup specifically does not include that ingredient because of the skin rash and irritation issue.
Fascinating stuff here (http://ezinearticles.com/?Mineral-Makeup-and-Bismuth-Oxychloride&id=68978).

I've found the same thing. My nose & chin get too shiny w/o primer. It doesn't matter what kind of foundation I use, as I notice it w/ both BE and traditional makeup.
I am currently trying BE's primer. I like it ok, it's not a miracle cure for the shinies, but it helps. I've never used the Smashbox primer, so I can't compare it to that, though I know it's a cheaper alternative. Also, for anyone that was curious about it, BE's primer is preservative-free.

Katy--thanks for the info. I had heard a little about Bismuth--good information. I see that the everyday minerals has no bismuth, but does have mica, and with more google research I see mica can have that effect on some people as well.
I've been wearing my sample of the semi-matte--doesn't have quite the glow, but I haven't gotten itchy yet (however I haven't gotten as hot/sweaty as I did when I first noticed that Everyday Minerals itched me too.)
I still love it. I think I will just wear semi-matte in the summer and save the original glo for special occasions and winter wear. I will tolerate the itch for beauty! haha.
I've tried 3 of the blushes so far: Sunday Brunch, which I adore but is SO easy to overdo and look like a streetwalker. A few grains does it.
Nick Nack which is I think my favorite so far.
Splendid which is a little too subtle but has a nice shimmer and I might mix it with Sunday Brunch to "cut" it.
Allyray: Re: The warmth: have you watched the DVD that came with the kit yet? that gives the best instruction on the warmth. A little goes a long way with that stuff. It's like a blush/bronzer-buff a little onto your cheeks and maybe nosebridge for a sun-kissed look.
2. You might be tapping too much into your lid to start with. I use maybe 1/16 teaspoon or even less--swirl & tap, not much comes off--then buff it in. It takes me about 3 times going over to get the right level of coverage but a little at a time makes sure I don't get a powdery/flaky look.

I'm very fair, and I don't use warmth at all. No matter how little I use, I can't seem to buff it on light enough. I do like the warm radiance stuff, though. That's much lighter and works really well as a bronzer for me.

Yes, you can return used products to BE within 30 days. My MIL bought over $300.00 in products, used them for a week and then returned it for a full refund after she decided she didn't like it. They didn't have a problem with it at all. She had even thrown all the boxes away.

In the summer I put mineral veil on first then the foundation and such and then top it off w/mineral veil again. This seams to work for me.

I am looking into getting the Everyday Minerals and was wondering what brushes are a must. I am just going to do the powder, blush, concealer, and finishing powder. Do I need a separate brush for each powder? Right now I have a concealer brush, a Kabuki, and a flocked sponge (when I tried the samples it emphasized my pores, this supposedly smooths everything out). I imagine I would need something else for the blush?

Soulmate: In my opinion, the essential brushes would be a kabuki OR flocked sponge, a concealer brush, a blush brush, and an eyeshadow brush. I apply my foundation and finishing powder with the same kabuki brush, but you definitely need a seperate one for the blush.
I can't recommend Everyday Minerals enough! I think you'll love it!
Amazing Cosmetics has a pressed finishing powder (http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Cosmetics-Powder-Set/dp/B00021CZ0K/ref=sr_1_7/105-1446319-2418830?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1181868911&sr=1-7) (Ulta carries it, but I don't know about Sephora)
I use a kabuki to apply the foundation and a blush brush for blush and because I have it, a large powder brush for my MV (I don't buff like with the foundation, I just apply like a powder). When I'm traveling, I use a mini-bukie (and get horrible coverage) and just a blush brush for both my blush and my MV.
Just wanted to say that I've figured out how to avoid my BM melting off by the end of a particularly hot and sticky day. I've started to just mix in a small amount of my foundation w/my moisturizer to make a tinted moisturizer. It's very light coverage, but it covers well enough -- I just stipple on some of my foundation (in powder form) to my particularly troubled spots after applying the tinted moisturizer. I follow w/MV. I've found that I don't have any of the melting issues that I'd been noticing on really hot days. :)
I ordered a sample kit from Everyday Minerals and tried it for the first time today. It makes my face ITCHY! BM doesn't really make my face itchy. Oh well. I liked the coverage w/ the matte finish.

Grrr...having lots of trouble with my BM in the summer months. My skin apparently thinks it's 1992 and I'm 13 again. I am so, so, oily! BM is literally melting off my face within hours of putting it on, and that's WITH smashbox primer.
I'm not sure if I'm using too much primer? Or if maybe primer+mineral makeup is just not a good combination?
Regardless, I'm seeing a new dermatologist on Monday, so maybe if I can get the oil under control, I'll have better success. I did order an EM sample kit to see if the matte finish changes anything. Hope I'm not itchy as some others have been...

Which of the finishing powders DOES NOT have a shimmer to it? Does the Orig. Glo have "shimmer" in it?
I currently have the following order pending, but I want to make sure I'm not going to look frosted when I'm done applying. :p
Concealers: Mint Color Corrector
Finishing Powders: Balancing Powder
Foundations: Cool-Fair Original Glo
Foundations: Cool-Fair Medium Intensive

I have the silk dust and there's no shimmer in that - though if you're a tad too heavy handed (which can easily happen) it will goth-white you out. But I just blend it with a sponge. I'm already fair, so I don't know if it would be better or worse on someone darker than me.

The starter kit is good- when I first purchased BM, that's what I got. As a bonus, they 100% guarantee it, so if halfway through using it you discover you don't like it, they will still take it back and refund your money. I discovered I needed a lighter shade and they let me exchange it no hassle.
They usually have better brushes and more options with the company ones.

I'm almost out of my BM foundation from the starter kit, so I just ordered the sample kit from EM...hopefully I like it!! If not, I may try Ulta's mineral foundation. Has anyone tried that one?

Holy crap! I ordered my EM sample kit Saturday night/Monday morning and received it in the mail TODAY! That's with no mail over the w-end or monday! Impressive! Also, I'm really, really impressed with the amount of foundation they give you in the samples! The all-over color will last me FOREVER if it lasts as long as the BM stuff does! I'll try it tomorrow...hopefully I'll like it. I got the matte finish since I still have the oilies with the BM.

Hi Ladies,
Question: For those of you who use Everyday Minerals, do you use the same application techniques as those used for Bare Minerals?
Thanks!

Thank you!
*FYI* Ulta (http://www.ulta.com/control/main) has their BM Mineral Veil on sale for 2 for $30 (regularly $19 each). Not a bad deal considering BM isn't usually discounted outside of sets.

Hey ladies,
I have a question for ya.
I got a kit from my mom for mothersday last year and have been using the [B]Fairly Light (and for summer a mix of the FL + Light). I am running low, so I ordered some more Fairly Light, but it looks A LOT darker than the remainder of the FL I have left.
So, my question is...did they change their formula in the last year and a half?
TIA!

:) BE rookie here!
I'm trying to read thru the thread but would like to know if I can use any type of brush for applying this?? I just got a starter kit from Ulta after trying my sisters BE but the brushes seem so rough. I have a full set of Trish McEvoy brushes as well as MAC but my question is, do I HAVE to use the BE brushes to get the full effect of BE? TIA
I do have to say this stuff looks great so far and I hope it works well with my skin and doesn't cause breakouts. After having to change foundation 2x due to them being discontinued I'm hoping I found something that will be around awhile.

I use a mix of other brushes and BE brushes. In my experience, the manufacturer of the brush doesn't matter.

Has anyone tried the Bare Escentuals Eye kits? Do they really look good on any color? I have brown eyes and tried the Everyday Mineral eye shadow samples and aside from a pale green and a goldish/orange color (I can get the exact names later if anyone needs them for comparison purposes), I didn't think any of the ones I picked looked good. I'm contemplating getting the "get started eyes" kit, but I'm also seeing the meet the (fill in the color), so I'm not sure which way to go and I don't want to spend the $$$ if it won't look good.

I've been reading through this thread (and feeling overwhelmed) and was hoping for some advice.
1) Does BE or EM promote a full "look" meaning they match all the colors for an everyday face, and then a nightime face. Do you guys really wear it this way?
2)Do you continue to mix your non mineral makeup (say Lancome or Mac) with just a BE foundation?
3) Does it take you longer to get ready?
4) I ordered some free samples. Do I need to buy a brush to get the real effect, or will applying it with a blush brush/ sponge work well enough to let me know if I like it?
5) Is the mineral Veil a BM only product? or does every company have a similar product that locks the makeup in place?
thanks.

1. I'll wear my same makeup from day to night - sometimes I'll use a BM blush more of a nighttime look in the evening. (BM has kits of different color palettes for certain looks)
2. No. I use mineral makeup only.
3. It takes about the same amount of time for me.
4. The blush brush will work, but it might not give you the best coverage. A sponge will provide heavy coverage. A foundation brush is your best bet - Try to get an afforable one if you can.
5. Many of the other companies call it "finishing powder" instead of mineral veil.

1) Does BE or EM promote a full "look" meaning they match all the colors for an everyday face, and then a nightime face. Do you guys really wear it this way?
I don't. I use EM concealer, foundation, blushes (I have 5 which I alternate), and some eye shadows. The kits you buy from EM allow you to pick your own shades and really don't suggest any particular colors going together.
2)Do you continue to mix your non mineral makeup (say Lancome or Mac) with just a BE foundation?
I do use only mineral concealer, foundation, and blush. I use some mineral eyeshadows (EM, BE) and some not (cargo, urban decay, sephora & ulta brands mostly). I do not use lip color, eyeliner or mascara from mineral brands.
3) Does it take you longer to get ready?
Not at all. It takes me about 10 minutes to put on a full face (primer, concealer, foundation, blush, eyeliner, eyeshadow, eyebrows, mascara, lipstick). To do a more casual look (foundation, blush, eyeshadow, lips) it takes me about 5 minutes.
4) I ordered some free samples. Do I need to buy a brush to get the real effect, or will applying it with a blush brush/ sponge work well enough to let me know if I like it?
You're fine to start with a blush brush. Look at a tutorial online that shows you how to apply. Have a saucer or small bowl that you can swirl in because your sample lids will not be big enough for your brush.
5) Is the mineral Veil a BM only product? or does every company have a similar product that locks the makeup in place?
EM has several finishing powders-I use Silk Dust, but only rarely, i feel fine with just the foundation & concealer.
1) Does BE or EM promote a full "look" meaning they match all the colors for an everyday face, and then a nightime face. Do you guys really wear it this way? I do a pretty basic day face with may or may not include eyeliner or eye shadow. My night/fancy face will have both eyeliner and shadow.
2)Do you continue to mix your non mineral makeup (say Lancome or Mac) with just a BE foundation? yes. Sometimes it's just easier for me to use my regular blush than to get the loose BE blush just right. Also, since I don't wear eye shadow all that much I still use my regular, non-BE shadows along with my BE shadows. And since I can never seem to get the loose foundations right while on vacation (even with the proper tools), I've basically stopped using them for travel. Then again, I only wear make up on vacation when I need it (like going out for dinner) and stick with sunscreen for the daytime.
3) Does it take you longer to get ready? I don't think it takes any more or any less time for me to use BE - usually under 10 minutes for my full, evening face, and closer to 5 for my daytime face.
4) I ordered some free samples. Do I need to buy a brush to get the real effect, or will applying it with a blush brush/ sponge work well enough to let me know if I like it? I've found that the kabuki brush makes a WORLD of difference. That said, I bought mine off of Amazon through Beauty Strokes since they were less expensive but still good quality.
5) Is the mineral Veil a BM only product? or does every company have a similar product that locks the makeup in place? I've used both BM's Mineral Veil and EM's Silk Dust. I like the way the MV goes on better (the actual application) than the silk dust, but I look and feel of the silk dust better than the MV - I'm one of the one's that gets a little itchy, burny face from the BM line which was why I switched to EM

Has anyone tried the Bare Escentuals Lip Guard?
I'm looking for something really super moisturizing for those dry winter lips, with enough color so it looks like I'm not just wearing Chapstick or something. The Lip Guard is on Sephora's website but it's an online order only, so I can't try it out before buying. Thoughts?

I haven't tried that one Rosebud, but I have used the Vitamin E & Shea Butter Lip Savor for years - it just came back after having been gone for the past couple of years. I love that stuff (though it's not on their website yet - so glad I bought two!!)

Oh, I don't use anything special. I either use a china saucer that I got at a flea market (pretty pattern, looks nice on the vanity) or a sushi sauce dish which I got as part of a set at Big Lots for $6.99.

Rosebud, I have that exact color of LipGuard! I love the color & the smell--it smells just like lemon cream pie. It is very moisturizing and emollient, and I don't think it's very sticky, which I love. My only issue is that it seems my tube is leaking. It hasn't leaked out into my bag, but if I don't wipe the neck off after each use, I'm afraid it will.
They do sell a set of Lipguard minis (I think they're called "Junior Lipguards") that you could get if you want to try a few different colors out.
Has anyone used BE's "Weather Anything" liner sealer before? I just got it and tried it tonight. It really seems to make a difference!

Has anyone tried mixing their EDM or BE with moisturizer or jojoba oil? My skin is ridiculously dry in the winter and lately my BE (I'm about to try EDM) feels just like a mask on - tight. Not itchy - just tight (although the BE has taken to stinging when I apply it with that kabuki brush - the bristles hurt now when they didn't before).
I saw a review on the EDM site that suggested mixing it with a moisturizer or even vitamin e or another oil - I was just wondering what people thought of that. Bobbi Brown has a new extra face oil (it's a mix of EOs) - I thought of using that... I like to use primer though, so maybe I should do the oil routine mixed with a moisturizer, allow it to set and then use my primer and then the mineral makeup?
I'm just trying to get rid of the masky feeling... the finish and coverage of mineral makeups typically works for me (although with BE the color isn't perfect).
Any tips?

I haven't tried mixing it with anything but I do switch to a super moisturizing face lotion in the winter and that has helped a lot. The new moisturizer takes a while to sink in to my skin so I usually dust with a touch of powder first to the foundation minerals don't get cakey when they're applied. This method has been working for me so far.
I've noticed that my kabuki brush starts to hurt on my skin if I haven't washed it in a while. As the make-up builds up the bristles get a little stiff. In fact, I really need to wash my brush this week!

bumping this up
--just wondering what people do with their BM stuff when traveling? Every time I travel with it I end up with tons of it coming up through the sifter and sitting loose on the top. Has anyone found a way to travel with it without it becoming a huge mess?

I put little pieces of scotch tape over the sifters. It's kind of a pain b/c they have to be super clean for the tape to stick but it's better than all the powder coming out and being a big mess!

This thread hasn't had much action lately, but seems as though there are plenty of mineral make-up wearers! I'm hoping someone might have some advice for me.
I'm a late adopter and just bought the Fair BM kit. I've been wearing the Fair foundation for the past few days and I'm looking a little orange/tan. I have cool coloring and am not sure what solution might be available to get a natural look for me.
I really love the concept, but I'm not comfortable being orangy from the foundation. Any tips considering I'm already using the lightest version available? Also, I'm not using warmth, so I don't think it could be that. I was a MAC devotee prior to dabbling in mineral make-up.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a very fair complexion too, but with some underlying redness. I'm using the fairly light for foundation and the light for a concealer over that. My first thought when you said orange was the warmth--I had terrible luck with that. I actually like that the foundations have a yellow/tan base because it cuts some of the redness for me. But maybe that is what is leading to orange/tan on you? Are you buffing it in a lot--does that help at all? Are you using any blush, or just the foundation?
RainGirl
10-27-2008, 08:09 PM
I feel like I'm buffing well, as you can't really see any of the product on my skin by the time I'm done. I am using a MaryKay blush that I've been using for awhile. If I can get the foundation color figured out I am thinking about investing in some BM pink/rose colored blush. I've never been able to pull off bronze type colors, like warmth, although I like the concept.

does anyone use a non BE concealer w/ their BM? I've been using BM for almost 5 years now and really love it. Sometimes I need something w/ fuller coverage (I have lupus and during flare ups I tend to get a red patch/rash the size of a quarter on the side of my face) and wondering if I could just get a full coverage concealer vs. switching to a full coverage foundation. The multi-tasking concealer does nothing for me.
So if you do use a cream/stick type concealer w/ BM does it blend in well w/ your foundation?
TIA!

I use Mary Kay tube concealer with BM (Fairly Light). I have it in both Ivory and Light Ivory (which is really light!). I don't use anything else by them, but I swear by this concealer. It doesn't budge and it blends really well. I have never had luck with the BM "concealers". Why would concealer only come in two colors while the foundations comes in 9? It doesn't seem to cover any more than the foundation, either.

I use Bobbi Brown cream concealer when i need a lot of coverage, especially on my eye lids, which are pigmented. If i need lighter coverage, i use one of the special powders, well-rested.

hi all - i luckily just found this thread....i am considering buying the BM starter kit so i went to a store that sold it and had the woman apply it for me. while she was doing it i was looking at her face and it was SO obvious that she was wearing something so i was a little nervous. when she was done applying mine it seemed to look okay in the store, but when i went outside to DH who was waiting for me he gasped and said i looked like i had aged 10 years! when i got in the car and looked again i could see all the fine lines around my eyes (that honestly i had never really even noticed before:() - so needless to say i was a little disappointed.
just curious if this happens to anyone else, just because of the nature of the make-up (tends to gather in wrinkles and fine lines), or was it just because the woman put too much on? i was really hoping to love this, i currently don't wear foundation but want somethign to even out my complexion. TIA!
thanks looch and tanya! Now I need to find the right concealer!
kmack, I don't have that problem and find that the make up looks better outside in natural light. did she put moisturizer on before applying the BM? She might've put too much on. I usually layer the make up if I want more coverage vs. loading the foundation on the brush and trying to get it all on at once.

I haven't been on this thread for awhile so maybe this brand has already been mentioned. I started using a mineral makeup called Stript about 6 months ago and really like it. I have never been a fan of BM because I find it very opaque and flat, which when I was a makeup artist was not good for HD filming or photography. I started experimenting with Stript and really like it. I don't think any major retailers sell it, I have only found it at some smaller beauty supplies.
