I'm worried sick -- here's what happened:

I went out last night to a favorite club of mine. It was about 10:30 and I was heading back from the bar when out of nowhere, the outside of my right arm and outside of my right leg got a strange sensation in it.

It wasn't quite numb and it wasn't quite a pins and needles feeling -- it felt like somebody was brushing up against my arm and my leg.

I also couldn't lift my arm.

The odd feeling only happened in my arm and my leg -- it happened in a "strip" on the outside of each extremity, just on the outside of my arm and my leg. No other part of my right side was affected.

The whole episode lasted maybe ten seconds and then vanished. It didn't intensify -- it just came on as is and then it was gone.

I froze where I was -- and then somehow I made it back to the table where I was sitting with a couple of friends.

They kept asking me what was wrong -- for about five seconds, I was in such a tailspin I couldn't even answer them -- and then I told them what happened.

After that, I went home.

I am only hoping this was some type of migraine aura and not what I think it is. I'm going to get this checked out in a short while -- from what I read on the web, it didn't quite sound like a TIA and it didn't quite sound like a migraine headache aura.

I used to get migraine headache auras where I got complete numbness in my hand and in my tongue -- the numbness would come on intensely and then disappear after 15 minutes. Then I'd get a partial loss of vision in my eye (which would go away in five minutes) and then I'd get the wavy lines.

The numbness has vanished and now I just get the wavy lines and maybe the headache afterwards.

At any rate, I can't eff with what happened. It was so worrisome I was afraid to go to sleep. I stuck it out until nearly 2:30 this morning and then I went to bed.

It does sound to me like the symptoms of a TIA. However, if you go to a doctor, they won't really be able to tell for sure that that's what it was. It won't show up on a CT scan or MRI. I would go get checked out, though, especially if it happens again. How scary!

My best advice to you is get a doctor's appointment right away! I am not a doctor, but I have more than handful in the family, and the one thing I have learned from them is, don't say 'it's probably nothing.' While it usually IS nothing, there is a chance it is something and a lot of the treatable things become less treatable when the patient says 'it's probably nothing.' and goes about life.

That having been said, please don't worry yourself sick. You don't know anything until you see the doc, so get yourself in there and find out what he/she thinks. Also, if you find the doctor less than responsive to your worries or needs, see somebody else as well.. I can't tell you how many people ask me to call one of my family members for a second opinion because they don't really trust or feel comfortable with their doctor. Don't take what's said if you don't feel attended to!

Good luck with everything and keep us updated! :D Sending you tons of support today!!!!!!

I just got back from the ER.

They came up with a diagnosis of non specific paresthesia -- this is a los of sensation in extremities that's caused by anything -- pinched nerve, etc.

At least I have peace of mind. That sure scared the hell out of me.

Yay! Glad it was nothing serious. I have all kinds of kooky stuff--dizzy spells, blurred vision. auras...totally migraine related...there is nothing wrong with me.

Nerves are weird.

Migraines all have odd auras -- like I said, I remember when I used to get the numb left hand and numb tongue; people would sound like they were coming from the bottom of a barrel and I'd garble words.

You think that if you go to a chiropractor or a massage therapist it will help?

Maybe not.

That was some scary shit, when that happened.

And even scarier was that I was 30 miles from home. You bet I beat it out of where I was in a hurry -- I had no idea what was going to happen after that.

My friend had pretty much what you described but it turned out to be MS. Have they ruled that out?

This is what I was going to say...although I am glad to hear you went to the ER and you are doing OK now.

That does sound like a TIA. Did they for sure rule that out?

BTW - Are you under a lot of stress? My mom suffered from TIA-like symptoms for years and recently learned they were stress-related.

Glad to hear they didn't find anything wrong, but a word of caution.

I'm a registered nurse working in the Neuro-Surgical ICU. If this turns out to be an isolated incident, great....but if it happens repeatedly be sure to see an actual neurologist. We get a lot of patients in my ICU that have non-specific symptoms like this for awhile and ER and primary physicians tell them it's nothing.

I'm not trying to scare or worry you because, most of the time it is nothing and it happens once and never again...but if it becomes a reccuring problem, become an activist for your own health and seek another opinion.

I hear you on that -- and yep, they ruled out TIA.

Just to be on the safe side, I'm going to see my regular doc this afternoon -- just to ask him a bunch of questions and to get a referral for a neurologist.

And I do indeed have a metric gripload of stress going on. I'm hoping that's all it was.
