I know the SATC series was based on a book by Candace Bushnell...what I'm wondering is if the book explains how the relationships of the 4 women started.

I'm a late-comer to SATC...watched it but not faithfully...and I'm now catching up by getting each season from the library (who knew the library would have SATC?!?;)) I assumed that Season One would explain who Carrie met first, if Carrie is the catalyst to the friendships and/or how they all came together, but it didn't.

Since I don't think I'm going to learn this through the DVDs I'm thinking maybe I need to read the book? (I'm OCD with stuff like that...I need to know that history ;))

So does the book explain how the women all came together?

Hmm, I've read 4 Blondes by Candace Bushnell and HATED It. I don't think that's the one that started it. Interesting.

I read the book, it's very different from the show. The book is titled "Sex and the City," and there are different versions out there (my friend and I each read it and in one she ends up with Big and one she doesn't). I don't think the book explains how the women met.
The whole book is kinda like part of the first season-when they have little interviews from people; in the book Carrie is always researching for her column by interviewing people. The show is way better!

Wasnt the book bizarre compared to the series? I remember reading it and thinking how did the show ever get based on this? The relationship between the four women didn't even seem to exist in the book and i think that there was no Charlotte? OR maybe it was Miranda? And the narrator isn't even Carrie, it's some woman who makes references to Carrie.
Very weird.

After reading two books by Candance Bushnell, I think she should consider herself VERY lucky that SATC gives her any credit. I couldn't even finish "Four Blondes". UGH.

ITA. Her books are unbearable (and I am not a book snob by any means!).

I also love the series, but was unable to get through the book. And I'm a frequent reader and almost never stop reading a book once I start -- but it was just really bad in my opinion! I don't recall any explanation of the relationships in the parts I read.

I also read "Four Blondes" and hated it.
I never read SATC, but it sounds like it's very different from the show.

So it's not just me. The first section of 4 Blondes was OK (and I have the follow-up book that goes over Janey's wedding, Trading Up, I think it's called). But as for the rest of it, WEIRD!!!

I am not a fan of Bushnell's books either.

what I'm wondering is if the book explains how the relationships of the 4 women started.

On the show (as you know), it's never really explained. I sort of think that Carrie was friends with each of them individually first. Little things here and there seem to place the friendships, and I think that Charlotte came in last. Like, we know that Carrie was friends with Miranda before Charlotte got to know her (Miranda), because Charlotte didn't know about the ex that really hurt Miranda (season 2, first episode IIRC). Also, Charlotte didn't know about the ex that hurt Samantha. Although, there is an early episode (season 1), where we are supposed to see that the girls all partied together in earlier years (the one where they all go to a baby shower in the suburbs).
