Hate to be pessimistic, but this topic is always funny. We all heard about the lovely presents everyone got...but what about that one gift that you couldn't wait to return?
Pics are always good too! :)
actually, this is the first year that i did not get a present i didn't like. woo hoo!!!
my dh got a christian self help book from my mom. not a bad thing if you are christian, but my dh is not a christian. though, i don't think he realized it was a christian book, so he wasn't offended by it. also, he likes to read about other religions. i just thought it was a little strange.

My MIL always loads us up with Avon crap (she sells)... this year, we got almost nothing Avon (our heads almost spun around out of shock) but we did get one thing, a plug-in video game controller -- chock full of games no one has ever heard of. I mean, like 50 of them.
She tells us that it should be good for DD's manual dexterity... um, yeah. Because I'm likely to start her on a bunch of video games when we've avoided the whole thing so far!
We also got an electronic table/crumb sweeper shaped like Santa Claus LOL

I really didn't get anything I didn't need or want, but my 13 yo brother got a thing of waffle mix and a used waffle maker (yard sale item) as a gift. He doesn't even like waffles, and when he opened it looked at me with wonder, then back at the giver and said "um, thanks so much!"
Yeah, not such a great gift, but not the worst, I'm sure.
a waffle maker for a 13 yo is hilarious!!!

Can't think of anything too weird or bad, but I got a shrug. I am a true apple shape- all gut and no hips. I don't really need anything that ties around my non-existant waist. It's cute, but I hope I can return it. It's just funny because the person that bought it for me always buys me stuff that is cute but very unflattering. And it's a very close aunt, so it's not like she doesn't know my tastes.
But I am keeping the pants that came with the outfit. :)

I requested it, and I love it, so it isn't bad: I got a Litter Locker from my mom. But my dad was horrified that I asked for a cat poop receptable for Christmas. :o

My mom got me one of those sappy mother daughter books...and its sweet but I just have so many of them and what do you do with them!!!! My DH also bought me this candle set with the weirdest scents in it...Vanilla something..which I hate vanilla scented stuff....pinecone something and pumpkin spice?????????? I just thought they were weird scents to be all together in a gift pack.

My stepmom got me a kind of strange gift....she got me part of the Vera Bradley collection (which I *love*), but instead of getting me something practical like a purse or something she got me this travel jewlery case. Don't get me wrong, it's cute, but I hardly ever travel with more jewlery than what I am wearing at the moment and if I do it's only my pearls....and she knows that.

I got 3 or 4 junky candle sets. I even got one "make your own holiday candle" set. Fun. I'm not mad about the gifts, I just know there was no thought involved. I put a lot of thought into people's gifts so for people I have known forever to get me junky candles just hurts my feelings.

Ok, I really can't explain this one too well, it would be much better if I could show everyone..
I got a Diamond Ring keychain, it is this huge fake diamond ring hooked on a keychain.. who uses that? I mean come on, who even buys that?!?! What would I ever do with it, I am not going to actually put it on my keys. I know I sound terrible, but..
It was from DH's Grandparents, and they dont know me REALLY well, so I am not mad about.. but it did make me laugh!
I always get gifts like this, we always try to find the best gift for everyone, and then I get stuff that is so strange! :)

I don't think I got any "bad" gifts...although MIL did buy me one of those Glad Wax Scents Candle things. I did mention at one time that I wanted to try them to see if they were as good as the commercial portrayed but I just thought it was a weird gift. And for the record I did not find them that great. I definatly have candles that smell better.

I got a sorta weird gift, but I love it since it was so thoughtful. I got two cases of Wonka Bottlecaps. They are one of my favorite candies, and dh eats them all out of the Halloween candy. Afriend was around when we were teasing each other and decided to get me some

Not a gift for me but MIL got her sisters tiny little purses that said Mrs. Affleck and Mrs. Kutcher. Her sisters are fun loving and all but huh? They don't like Ashton or Ben and the purses went out of style a while ago. We got a lot of laughs out of the purses.

My MIL gave me two things that really made me wonder...I'm Jewish, she's Lutheran, and she doesn't always really know what to do about that...so...she got me blue and white garland and a mug that has a Hannukiah on it -- but it's heat sensitive, so when you pour a hot liquid into it, little flames come out of the Hannukiah. I wish I had a picture. Soooooooooo tacky. And weird. And that was pretty much the entirety of her present to me.

Well, this one is sort of hard to explain - my mom and I did not have a good relationship - it was really, really bad, and she passed away three years ago. So I don't really have any pictures of her or anything like that around the house. My kids were very young when she died, so they had a limited relationship with her (due to our bad relationship - we would often go months without speaking).
Anyways, my stepdad got them each a quilt with photographs of her doing stuff with each grandchild screenprinted all over it. They're really beautiful, but he wants me to hang them up in each of their bedrooms as wall hangings. They're full-sized quilts - they'd cover an entire twin bed. I feel bad, but I don't want two bed-sized reminders of someone who made my life miserable plastered all over my walls, KWIM? I just can't handle the thought of seeing a ton of pictures of her everytime I go into their rooms - there's a LOT of bad history, so frankly I'm kind of taken aback that he would do something like this. I don't know how I'm going to weasel out of this one. :(

My mom got me one of those sappy mother daughter books...
My mom got me one too. Actually it it the same book she bought me last X-mas and I still haven't read that one so now I have two.
We got an uncooked pie and we don't currently own an oven so we can't cook it.
It's not really a weird or bad gift, but two different people gave me GCs to the Olive Garden, which means that my secret guilty pleasure is not so secret.
And I got more useless home decor crap. I really dislike dust collectors like the Lenox xmas tree-shaped cand dish I received, but oh well.

What is a litter locker!!! That is too funny you asked for that!!! :)
It's the same idea as a Diaper Genie, but for cat litter scoopings. You put the waste in the top and turn a dial and it twists a plastic bag into a knot inside, then you throw it away when the canister runs out.

My ILs are notorious for giving bad gifts. This year I got my own junk mail for Christmas. A Costco credit card application was mistakenly sent to their address. They put it on the tree for me. DH couldn't stop laughing. They also gave our seven-month-old DD a coffee mug.
DH tried to snap a picture of my junk mail but it turned out blurry. You get the idea.

My mom always gets the weirdest gifts from her mother (my grandma). This Christmas she got:
1. Neiman Marcus Fashion Fortune Cookies - they say things like "Don't forget to wear your Seven's when you give help For All Mankind", and "Holidays are brighter at Neiman Marcus" and loads of other fashion related pointless fortune messages. This is funny because my mother doesn't like fashion at all.
2. Neiman Marcus cheddar cheese biscuits that tasted like dog treats. Mom got three cans of these, all different cheese flavors. They were so gross.

Usually we get pretty good gifts from MIL but this one was a little strange. She got us a toilet paper holder in the shape of a snooty butler with his pants down sitting on a toilet. One hand was holding his nose and the other is to hold up the toilet paper. Ugliest. thing. I. ever. saw. We both agreed to put it in our outhouse at our cabin so it wouldn't be in our house.
Oh and my mom likes to buy me watches even though she knows I don't wear one. This will be the third one in four years.

Thankfully I didn't get the usual makeup samples from my MIL. You know the ones you get when you buy over $50 or whatever at the Clinique counter? Yeah, she wraps them up and passes them off as presents (Christmas they're with other things, but birthday? Yup, that's all you're getting...well that or the free bag  ).

I got a pashmina scarf from MIL, and while I am really excited about the item, I'm not too hot over the colour. It's this strange mustard yellow colour - which really is not very nice with my complexion. She got one for SIL too, but hers was black, I'd much rather a black one, than a mustard yellow one. And MIL and FIL talked about how they went to various stores looking for just the right kind....so....there were no blues or greens in the store?? oh well!
My grandmother got me this hideous zipper down smoke colored cardigan with cardinals and pine cones all over it, size large. My mom said "I think Grandma forgot you were pregnant" and I said " I think Grandma forgot I wasn't seventy years old" UGH......

A $20 GC to Mimi Maternity. The nearest store is over an hour away from me and your average item is $60+. And if I try to use it online, I'll have to add shipping to that. I'd never buy a GC for someone if they would need to add their own $$ to use it.

My brother always gives me some kind of plant-related thing, usually some sort of bulbs that you have to plant and grow. Maybe a nice gift for someone with a green thumb, but I care nothing about plants and have been known to kill even plastic ones. ;)
Seriously, for like 10 years now that has been my Christmas gift. So odd.
Not necessarily at Christmas, but once or twice a year my dad gives us a potted plant. I can't imagine how my family got the idea that I'm all about plants and flowers.

My parents gave me (among other, much cooler things) a cake pan with a personalized lid--It says "From the kitchen of Rachel Lastname" and has a cheesy looking music staff with inaccurate notation. :) I love my parents, and I know I teach music, but I am soooo not into "teachery" stuff.

I get a TON of bath stuff every year. I am a five minute shower kind of girl!
It wasn't so bad coming from Bert's family--They don't know me that well, and I just had a baby, so I'm not the easiest person to buy for. But my MOM gets me bath stuff! On top of that, we have a tiny bathroom....Oh well, I'll just have to start taking baths so i can use the stuff up...

Some of these gifts you all are mentioning are too funny!!
The only thing I got that was semi bad was from MyMIL... 2 pot holders, 2 wax bars you melt in one of those difussers(I don't have), a black scarf , not bad, and some incense... my house must stink? and we have never used incense in the house? My crazy religious fanatic uncle is always good for a kooky gift. This year he gave me a CD of music from the time of Jesus. What do you say to something like that? I just told him that I didn't even realize they had recording equipment at the time of Jesus.
For my birthday he got me a CD of Irish, Scottish, and French-Canadian fiddle music, as well as an Enya CD. Totally random. They were shipped from Amazon.com so I returned them and ended up with a $5.99 credit, for 2 CDs!!

Okay, this was not a Xmas gift, but last year for our wedding we received from my neice (and my step-sister who let her buy it).....
a X-L red turtleneck from LLBean outlet store
I wear a size small/medium....
Was it a gift that DH & I were supposed to wear at the same time?
I was so confused that I called my mom to make sure they didn't mix up a gift or anything as it was in a birthday type bag. My mom said that my neice insisted that she get it for us (me) - she was 7 years old at the time. I think maybe if I were her mom I wouldn't have let her buy it with my money.

I received great gifts this year, but last year, oy...
My best friend was going on and on about how many great buys she made that year - we set a budget ($30 per adult) so she was priding herself on getting so much for so little. She bought my mom a decorative bath salts/bubble bath set - my mom NEVER takes baths - and my BF's DH even said, "it's something you will never use". My mom was hurt that my BF (who is like a daughter to my mom) would be so thoughtless in her gift-giving. We know it is the thought that counts, but gifts are always better when there is a little heart and soul (versus bargin-hunting) in the choosing. There are plenty of thoughtful $30 gifts out there in the world.
That same year, she bought me and DH a glass tic tac toe game. Tic tac toe?? This would have been awesome if it were chess or even checkers, but tic tac toe?? I would never in my wildest dreams say, "hey honey, how about a game of tic tac toe?" It went to Goodwill when we moved.

This year MIL got me an ice-skating snowman figurine that doubles as a perpetual calendar - the snowman is holding two dice that you change to show the date. Now, this isn't my style at all, but she has these seasonal decorations everywhere in her house (Anyone know what a Martha Goose is? MIL's serves as her dining room table centerpiece.), so I suppose it was only a matter of time before I got one. But what really freaked me out was when she said that it would be "the start of a tradition," and I had a flash of 3,000 changeable decorations covering every square inch of our home. DH assures me that she just meant that we could use it every winter. I've already made him responsible for setting it up, storing it, and changing the date every day, and I'm finally seeing the silver lining in her refusal to visit us in our home, so that maybe it can get "lost" after a few years.

I always thought my dad had pretty good taste when my parents were together, but since they divorced a few years ago, I have been proven wrong. Last year for Christmas I got a 18" candle and two metal bowls from a dollar store. Year before I got a black tote bag that was free from a convention he went to. This year, we had some nice gifts from him, but there were about 5 or 6 little strange things-
- a cast iron pancake pan that makes 4 little silver dollar pancakes at a time, but the thing weighs about 20 pounds!
- a butter cutter (looks like a guillotine)
- a pie saver ( I f*n hate pie)
- a cookbook holder (we live in a small apartment with a teensy tiny kitchen and like 1 foot of counter space)
- A shower door track cleaner (we have a shower curtain)
- a drain cleaner brush
And it's not even like he doesn't have much money. He does well for himself and owns a house and a boat and goes travelling, so you'd think he could find something not from the dollar stores.

This year, not only did MIL get us each something like 10 presents!!!, she managed to give us a lot of cr@p! The only thing we both liked were the plants (fake decorative kind) that we asked for. They are green and tasteful in tasteful wicker baskets. The other stuff..well.....the list includes...
- GIGANTIC red door 'draft stopper' with matching red pillows. All of these items, have giant white snowflakes on them. MIL said "this should remind you of your ski trip to Vail, I hear there was snow there!"
-for DH - a Tommy Hilfiger T-shirt circa 1988. I think she literally saves things for years in a closet and then pulls them out and wraps them when she finds them in there.
-for both of us, gigantic wine 'stoppers.' These things look like curtain rod ends, and they are almost as big. Very odd.
- An entire set of 'picnic ware.' DH and I already have a lot of nice stuff from Pottery Barn that we bought a few years ago. MIL went out and found some 'copy cat' stuff that kind of sort of looks like the stuff we have from Pottery Barn, and gave us tons and tons of it. Not to mention that we already have all of the stuff she gave us (napkins, etc.) but it's sort of cheesy that it's the knockoff stuff of the expensive stuff that we already have.
I don't mean to sound catty, but the plants (that we told her we wanted and are very, very nice) would have been enough! Anybody else have the problem of IL's or parents going 'overboad' with tons of cr@p that nobody even wants?
I told her she's on a present limit next year. I was trying to sound like I was kidding a little bit, but I wasn't really.

Last year MIL gave DH and I two jars of kickles - pickles with a kick - from her local farmers market. This year she gave us nothing, that was an improvement. :p
My Aunt gave me a cute maternity outfit but it was meant for someone half my size. She hasn't seen me since right before I got pregnant but its not like I was even close to that size then. Oh well, it was from Target and she sent the gift receipt. So I returned it and the way too big shirt for DH and used the store credit to help replace our vacuum that had just died.

A little late for Christmas, but I just opened up my birthday present from my MIL and it is this horrible patchwork cardigan sweater.... with shoulderpads.
I'm turning 28, not 58!

Okay so I didn't get anything crazy this year, but I have had some really bad gifts in the past. They are all from the same person, my mom's husband. I can't stand him and he knows it so I think he gives me these crappy gifts on purpose. One year he got me a sweatshirt that said "Runs with scissors." WTH is that??? The next year he bought me a Simpsons alarm clock. This was not a digital alarm clock but a fricken replication of their living room that was the size of a shoe box. It was 3D and had all the characters doing various things. If you moved Homer he said "Doa", Bart turned on the alarm, and I can't remember who you had to mess with to turn the damn thing off. That had to be the worst gift ever!! I was in my late 20s when he gave it to me!!! The next year the Simpsons theme continued and he gave DH and I an animated Homer doll that was dressed up as Santa and sang awful carols. We donated it to Subway and got a sandwich out of it at least!!! He is a freak. At least this year he just sent us a Ray Charles CD. Finally, something that I can use!!

LOL. They have the most hideous clothes! My god, my sister and I were watching QVC one day just for laughs.

DH and I each got a Starbucks giftcard. The nearest Starbucks is 35 miles away. Like I needed a reminder that I live in the middle of nowehere. ;)
I love Starbucks, but it's going to take awhile to use those cards up, considering how infrequently we get to go.
Last year my gradmother sent us a box of six varieties of very fancy canned salmon. Guess what? It tasted like plain old canned salmon.
The year before that, my grandmother sent us an enormous box of meat - summer sausages, smoked sausages and whatnot. They were okay, but there was soooo much. How much summer sausage can two people eat?

From my MIL and her sister I received:
A cotton black turtleneck with a white, repeating Christmas tree pattern
An ink pen
The most horrific Precious Moments ornament ever
A Nissan flashlight
First, I haven't worn a cotton turtleneck (much less one with a horrible pattern) since the 80's. Second, there is NOTHING Precious Moments in my house. Third, a Nissan flashlight? No one in this family even owns a Nissan! And it broke while we were putting the batteries in-at least it came with them!
They always buy me the most random, ugly stuff. I have no idea why they even bother. Most of it is CLEARLY from the Dollar Store. Nothing has a receipt or can be returned. The only worthwhile thing I got was a giftcard. We repeatedly ask that they just not buy us presents and just save their money-or just cash. I have no idea why people buy random crap that they have no idea whether we will like just to be handing us a present.

Um, is it weird that I would totally love that alarm clock and go totally nutso for it? Do you still have it? Wanna sell it? Donate it? :p

my ILs gave me 2 bags of jellybeans, and pen from their credit union.
my SIL gave me a red glittery strapless top with a gold ring in the middle of the top. (hard to explain) its not ugly or anything but it is VERY not my style. I have a non existant chest and a gut. something tight on the belly , loose on the chest and strapless is NOT flattering to me at all.

Sorry MaxandMolly, I no longer have that alarm clock. I gave it to my friend's son who loved it. I do still have a Bart Simpson doll who has one of those pull cords and he says various things like "don't have a cow man" if you are interested, LOL.

This wasn't a Christmas present but it was a wedding gift from my great-uncle. I have to say it was a thoughtful gift but...WEIRD. He gave us an old family painting, that had been in my family for a long time. It was really expensive but it was a painting of a bird/peacock (Im not sure what kind of bird) with REAL feathers. Yikes! DH and I sent him a big thank you note and left it in a closet at my mom's house. :( It's just too ugly to put up on the wall! Yet, I cant bring myself to sell it or give it away (actually I kind of gave it to my mom) because it was in the family for so long (about 100 years.)

Every freaking year SIL buys me pajamas for Christmas. One year they were leopard print with purses embroiderred on them and the front of the shirt said "fundie undies".

"fundie undies".
LMAO!
One year i received a scented teddy bear from one of dh's cousins. If you've never seen one of these dipped scented stuffed animals they are disgusting! They stink to the high heavens and they look like an animal has half digested them before being wrapped in cellophane and passed of as a gift.
You can't get the full effect but it's something similar to this. The entire doll gets dipped in something that makes it look like regurgitation! Mine didn't come with clothes.

OMG! I got one of these last year. It was from a gift exchange and it smelled like cinnamon. I had never seen them before & thought it was weird too. I assumed it was dipped in some kind of wax.
Was it wrong of me to have re-gifted it? :o

MIL gave us a frog wind chime. DS has a frong themed nursery but it doesn't mean my whole house is frog themed.

Did somebody say Quaker Factory? This little gem showed up recently from my (somewhat batty) mother:

Yup, rhinestones and pearls. And, even if I were willing to wear this thing, it's way, way too big for me. I'm hoping that my mother received this as a gift and is re-gifting it to me, and that she didn't actually spend money on it.

LMBO, Niobe. That looks like something my grandmother would love, buy, wear, and look fabulous in! She is super spunky and loves QVC-I'd be surprised if she doesn't own it. On a at ALL younger woman than my grandmother...umm, I can't even picture it on a young woman?
ETA:Ok, on second look, I don't even think my grandmother would wear that.

my uncle's wife is somewhat of a scrooge - not that im in it for the gifts now - but as a teenager, she gave me...the friggin gift with purchase from clinique!! yeah - not the purchase, just the sample sizd free gift with purchase - AND it was ooooollllddddd - the lipstick had sh!t all over it - like it hadnt been used, but it was "waxy looking"
another gem from her another year = a zebra-print sweater that was a size XS - and uh, i have kinda big b00bs so i usually wear a M/L or L... but guess who wears a XS - she does -im guessing she just pulled it out of her closet???
last year was the best - she gave me a box of chocolates - great right?? only i could see that someone had wrapped it (tape with different kind of wrapping paper) and had given it to her - the top of the box -yeah you could tell someone had written directly on the wrapping paper that it was orig wrapped in "dear pam - have a great holiday!"
i cannot wait for this year!
