Hi guys! I have a question for you. We're going to a wedding in San Diego (near San Diego?), and we're not sure where to stay. The wedding and reception will be north of the city (near where 56 and 15 intersect). We'll be staying either two or three nights, and will be renting a car, so we'll have a little bit of time to do some site seeing.
So, any suggestions? Where to stay, what to do, where to eat, whatever?

TheFuture

Hey Little Fred -
I actually live just off of the 15 and 56 freeways.

Are you wanting to stay near where the wedding is going to take place?

I actually suggest to a lot of people that they should stay in Hotel Circle area. It's central to everywhere. If you go to google and do a search for Hotel Circle San Diego some information should pop up.

If you want to stay near the wedding location, there are some nice places in Rancho Bernardo area to. With the completion of the new 56 freeway, you will have quick access to the coast and beach areas of Del Mar.

I am in Escondido!

littlefred I would look at the Rancho Bernardo or Poway Area to stay for the wedding. It's a very nice area and will be really close to the location.

Hotel Circle in SD is really nice, lots of great choices, but you will easily be a half hour away from the wedding site, and could potentialy hit alot of traffic coming up to the wedding as 15 is undergoing a rennovation and get's pretty backed up at times.

How much time will you be in the Area? If you will have extra time to see sites here would be some of my suggestions:

Sea World
San Diego Zoo
La Jolla (lots of great Art Galleries, great dining)
Gaslamp Quarter
Balboa Park (right next to the zoo)
Old Town
Julian

I'm shamefully clueless about the city we live in. We had a few regular resturants that we frequented near our old home, but now that we've moved we'd liek to find a couple new "regulars", particularly a very very casual Thai place, adn anythign else wonderful. Any suggestions near Tierra santa?

One more thing...last year we went to Balboa Park for the movies that they project onto the side of one of the museums. It was great being outside and enjoying a picnic while watching a movie. I thought it was during the summer, but I've looked online this year and can't find even a reference to it. Anyone know when they are? TIA!!

villanelle75 ~ Do you mean "Screen on the Green"? If so, here's what I found at the Balboa Park website (www.balboapark.org):
SCREEN ON THE GREEN Film series. Unfortunately, due to the growth of the trees the screen has become obstructed and Screen on the Green, the San Diego Museum of Art’s outdoor film series, will no longer be held. If you have any further questions, please contact the Museum by emailing information@sdmart.org.

I'm in UTC/La Jolla! I'm so glad this thread has been started.

villanelle75 : We went last year and were very disappointed. The wall where the movie was projected onto was rather small, so it was hard to see. Plus there is a little pond in the middle of it which took up a lot of possible sitting area. We stayed for 10 minutes and left. I guess if you should up an hour+ early you could get a seat closer up. We were pretty disappointed. That's just my opinion. oops, just read granda's post

Question: Any good restaurant recs for SD???

My faves:
Brunch: Le Peeps, Brockton Villa (long lines on weekends)
BBQ: Phil's BBQ (Hillcrest)
Thai: Celadon (Hillcrest), Spices Thai Cafe (Mira Mesa, Carmel Valley), Chiles (Convoy)
Mexican??? I need a new one now that Casa de Pico and Bandini are gone. For burritos I still love El Cotixan (Genessee) and Baja Fresh
Seafood: Tin Fish (convention center), Anthony's Fish Grotto (I've only had positive experiences there)
Italian: Trattoria Acqua (we celebrate every anniversary there)
Steak: Donovan's (steak was dry), Morton's (good steak, everything else was not so good)

DNA -- for Mexican, we sometimes go to Gringo's at the corner of Garnet and Mission. It's pretty decent, not awesome but fine. Chilango's in Hillcrest is really good, but it's open on weird nights.

Hey ladies!

I'm a former San Diegan (LJ, PB, Del Mar) who has been in San Francisco for the last 10 or so years. Going to visit my sister in Chula Vista in August, and DH, DS and I are looking for a condo to rent for a few days. DH plays golf, so I'd love for the condo to be near Torrey Pines, or at least not far from it (although it's a hike from CV). Any recs? I've been looking on Craigslist, but thought I'd see if anyone had suggestions.

DS is 3 months old, so I thought a condo might work better for us than a hotel.

TIA!!!! (I LOVE and miss SD!!)

Sandt -- La Jolla/Del Mar...well, let's see...

Depending on the kind of food you'd want...

La Jolla --

One of my favorite restaurants in the San Diego area is there. It's called Barbarella , and it is SO cute, and the food is really really good. It's in a small cottage by the beach (you can't see the water, but you can smell it!), and the setting is very nice...wine list is good, too. Desserts are yummy. Food is eclectic American.

Del Mar --

Americana is really very good. The brunches are supposed to be fantastic (I've never been), and their dinners have always been wonderful. Also in a small cottage-like space by the sea :p American eclectic cuisine. Highly recommended.

Il Fornaio in the Del Mar Plaza is endlessly romantic. You can reserve a table that overlooks the ocean as the sun is setting...good Italian food.

Sbicca is good as well, or so I hear (never been there).

PM me if you want any more recs...I love to eat out, and I live fairly near there, so I've tried a lot of places in the area.

Ok, San Diego ladies, I'm so frustrated, and I need your help. Do any of you have suggestions for a family doctor and/or an ob/gyn around here?

I got one suggestion for a family doctor, but she's booked until Nov. (Actually I have an appointment for this week that I made back in April, but now I have to reschedule, and I really don't want to wait another 3 months.)

I've also had the hardest time finding an ob/gyn. Every woman doctor I call is booked for several months out. So, back in March, I went to some random dr. who was available immediately. Well, he just had the worst bedside manner ever, hardly spoke a word to me, and took no interest in me whatsoever. I prefer a female, but I will also go to a highly recommended male.

Please PM me if you'd prefer not to post names publicly.

sandt8704: Pacifica Del Mar is in Del Mar, right by Il Fornaio with a great view of the ocean. We always go to Trattoria Acqua in La Jolla for our anniversary dinners; I think they have a wide variety of food on their menu.

granada: We are part of UCSD Healthcare and I just recently went to my first Obgyn appointment with Pamela Deak MD and she was really friendly and patient. She works out of the Perlman building by Thornton Hospital in the La Jolla area. It seemed like a nice place and the nursing staff was all friendly and my husband recommended Dr. Deak to me since he delivered his first baby with her help. Good luck!

San Diego Book Club
Another SD CC'er, strea3m, and I were interested in possibly starting a book club, and we wanted to see if there was any interest. I'm not sure how it would exactly work. I glanced at the LA book group, and it looks like they put together a list of books, and then arrange to meet once a month or so. But, of course, I would love to hear other suggestions. And definitely would love to hear from other people who are interested. If there's enough interest, I can start a thread over in the book area.

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone might have any recommendations for a good hairstylist/ colorist in the North County area. My mother lives in Vista and her longtime hairstylist has just retired. I'm trying to find someone new for her.

All recommendations welcome. Thank you!

I love my girl - however she is is Poway. Not as "north county" as Vista.
Her name is Sheri, at the Cha Cha Hair Club on Pomerado Road.

I have been going to her for 5 years and can't live without her. It's great because she loves what she does, and she especially loves doing color - which I just started with my lowlights about a year ago.

Let me know if you want more info.

Hello all,

Another san diegan here saying hi and nice to "see" other SD people online here. I live in poway and work in la jolla (ucsd).......anyone else out in my neck of the woods?

pacific bliss, I haven't personally used Bewise ranch, but I have read good things about them here:

Bridal Insider thread about CSAs (http://www.bridalinsider.com/discussionboard/forum_posts.asp?TID=11850&PN=1)

You do have to be registered to read it, but it is free -- plus its a local board so another good resource to have in mind for future inquiries. I don't post much there, but I lurk and get lots of info about local resources on all sorts of stuff from the non wedding related board section.

The general gist of the convos is that they like the quality and variety of the produce. I've been really interested in it, but having to go pick up the boxes has been a deterrent. In the meantime I just hit up the farmers markets and we are also lucky enough to have a farmer's coop store near our house.

Hope the info is of some help!

Hey everyone,
Not sure how active this thread is, but I could use some advice. I'm going out to San Diego on a business trip, and bringing DH along with me. We'll be staying in La Jolla, and I'm wondering if we should rent a car for our downtime. We're happy to take taxis to get around, unless they're super expensive. Any thoughts? Thanks!

vikib
01-24-2006, 01:54 PM
I'd say it depends on where in La Jolla you'll be staying. If you are down near the water/on the water, called "the village", then you'll have lots of restaurants, shops and things to do. If you are staying up the hill, above the village, a car would be really useful. It also depends on how long you're staying, like I said there's lots to do in the village, but if you're here a week a car would probably be good as you'll get bored. A taxi from La Jolla to downtown is about $30, which I think it pretty expensive, but again it depends on how long you'll be staying. HTH

Thanks for the advice! We'll be on the water, and I'll be in meetings most of the day both days, so we won't have a lot of time to explore anyway. I heard that you can rent a bike pretty easily, so DH will probably do that and go exploring on his own while I'm busy with work. I think we'll probably pass on the rental car and just spend our downtime poking around the village.

We are considering hiring a housecleaner to come in twice a month. Do any of you have someone to recommend? I'd much perfer and individual over a service, though I'd consider a service if it's a small, private one as opposed to a "Merry Maids" type place.

Traffic on the 15 usually starts at about 3/3:30 on Friday. You'll hit it through Escondido, it'll lighten up some, but you'll be hitting LA traffic RIGHT in the middle of their prime traffic time. Honestly, you'd be better off leaving by noon from SD to hit as little traffic as possible.

That is why I will only fly there from now on. It's less than $100 & you don't really need a car once you're there unless you're doing something really out of the ordinary.

Beach, beach, and more beach, with a little bit of time set aside to go to the farmers market.

Seriously, most weekends I stick pretty close to home. I surf, run on the beach, go to BBQs on the beach with friends, etc. That's what I moved here for!!

When I feel like getting out of North County, I go to the museums every once in a while if there's an exhibit that seems interesting. I try new restaurants. Wander around downtown and marvel at all of the development. Hike in Torrey Pines or one of the lagoons.
Drive out to the desert (Anza Borrego) to see the spring flowers. Julian for apple pie and antiques. Drive up to San Clemente for drinks on the pier at sunset. LA for the MOCA, shopping on Melrose, Santa Monica, Malibu...that's the beach again.

Maybe we can give you some pointed suggestions. Where do you live? What do you like to do?

Hmm, I'm not sure what that is!! I live in Solana Beach, so go to the one there on Sunday afternoons. Many of the communities have them on varying days of the week. I don't think Mission Valley has one, so the closest for you would probably be Hillcrest on Sunday mornings. I haven't been but have heard that it is a very nice, large market. La Jolla also has a really nice market on Sunday mornings.

I found a comprehensive list of San Diego area markets:http://www.sdfarmbureau.org/Pages/farmersmarket.html

Hi -

Not sure if this is the place.. But I was wondering what you guys thought about Oceanside, CA? My DH is thinking of moving us all there.. Any thoughts?

TIA

Emi

Depends where in Oceanside. I lived in a "not the best area" for 6-months. I felt pretty safe, for the most part, but couldn't wait to move. It was way to far north from everything I know (friends/places).

I agree - right near the beach in Oceanside is pretty nice and there are other nice neighborhoods, but there are serious gang problems in some areas. With Camp Pendleton so nearby it's also a very military town in many ways, which is not my thing, but YMMV. Any particular reason why your husband was thinking of Oceanside?

We're driving to Vegas next month and I was wondering how early on a Friday we need to leave to avoid bad weekend traffic. Anyone? Gayle?

I haven't been keeping up very well on this thread and I apologize.

If you leave by about 2 PM you shouldn't hit too much traffic on the way to Vegas.

Everybody ok? Any evacuations? I'm in South Park, concrete jungle territory, so we're fine, just stuck inside b/c I have asthma.

I'm also in a concrete/asphalt jungle territory, nowhere near any of the undeveloped or sparsely developed areas that seem to attract fires. I've been staying inside too, b/c the smoke is being blown this way from all directions. Hopefully these Santa Anas will die down sooner rather than later so the firefighters have an easier time fighting the blazes. We do have family friends in Foothill Ranch whose home backs to wilderness, and they had to evacuate yesterday due to the Santiago Fire.

Hi ladies,

I'm planning a trip to the San Diego Zoo in April and was wondering if you could recommend any nearby hotels for it.

Thanks!

Just a heads up--this is a really interesting project one of my colleagues has been working on. Several stations will be airing this documentary about meth Wednesday night 7-7:30. Even if you don't know anyone affected by the drug, it's fascinating to see the havoc it wreaks--Crystal Darkness
