This was on the news a few days ago. My co-workers are finding themselves and one got a couple hundred bucks!
Unclaimed money (http://www.sco.ca.gov/col/ucp/index.shtml)
You just fill in your first and last name and search and look to see if your address or previous addresses are in the list. Also search maiden names, try your relatives.
I found no money and my family didn't either but my co-workers are finding stuff.

Every state that I know of has an unclaimed property department. Google your state and "unclaimed property" and you'll most likely find a link. My mom and I claimed property that belonged to my grandfather (her dad) after her parents died ... it was a little bit of a PITA, but we landed a little under $1000 otu of it. :)
ETA: I just went to do a search and found $100 from a former address! :) Try this link:

SIL has about $150 in unclaimed property. She started to go through the process to get it back, but she said it was a major hassle and not worth it for that little.

Looks like there's a TON of stuff unclaimed by my paternal grandparents (according to the WI website). My father and aunt would probably be entitled to it, though, so I guess I'll just let it go.

Yay! You rock, Beth.
There are some in my maiden name, including one in the obscure hometown of an old friend! I doubt it's mine, but it's a strange coincidence.

****FOLLOWUP POST****
Sorry for bumping an old thread but I just wanted to thank all the ladies that posted links here. I don't remember which one I used, but when I was playing around, I found that my aunt and uncle were owed some money and emailed them about it. It turned out to be $6,000!
My aunt sent me a lovely thank you message this morning explaining that this money was so very timely because her son (my cousin) is fighting a particularly bad case of hepatitis C that he contracted from a blood transfusion that he received during leukemia treatments when he was a child. Anyway, I just wanted to share a bit of her message with you because I wouldn't have found the money if it hadn't been for your suggestions:
This is like a message from the Lord because it is approximately equal to the cost of J's medication that he is taking to try to cure the Hepatitis C....We really appreciate your letting us know about this & thank you with all our hearts!!!
Thank you so much, ladies!!

That is awesome keska. Thanks for bumping this too because I didn't see it the first time around. My MIL is listed for over $100, so we'll see if it's really for her.

Reading the state motto thread and going to 50states.com reminded me of unclaimed funds!! Everyone should scroll down to the bottom of their state and click on unclaimed funds. I did that once and got a check from an OLD employer for $60. My friend did it a few months ago and found a check for her for almost $700! Check all states you've ever worked in. :)

A family member received a letter that she has $23,000 in a bank account in California. It references a website http://onlinecashclaims.com/
While the family member never lived in CA, this person suspects it may be money put aside from an ex-spouse for their child. This ex-spouse passed away almost 20 years ago.
I'm trying to figure out if this is legitamate. I don't think it is - specifically because the company that sent the letter would charge a 10% fee. That screams fake to me.
I've been trying to do searches of this website to identify if it's legitamate.
This family member is older, and I would not want to see them duped.
I've gone to the direct site, but should I find a BBB type site?
Help!

I would go to California's unclaimed property search - http://www.sco.ca.gov/col/ucp/index.shtml
If it is legit, you shouldn't have to pay any money to get it. After all, it belongs to you.
Definitely check out the BBB also.

I just had to bump this thread up because thanks to the info here, I just got a $145 check from Virginia today! :D
I had no idea this kind of thing legitimately existed or that it would be so very easy to file a claim. Found money - woo hoo!!!

Woah crazy stuff! I didn't find anything myself or on my side of my fam, but I found a claim for my DH, in addition to a separate one for my MIL and FIL... Also I found one that possibly belongs to my best friend.
I just had DH fill out his form and we'll get it notarized and sent in this week... Hopefully it will be a decent amount (that at least covers the cost of postage) and not just something like 25 cents from an overpayment on an electric bill from 8 years ago. :)

So is this really for real and not a scam? I just found a claim for >$100 for my DH, so would love to get the $$. I know he'll be suspicious though, and I can't just fill it out for him b/c the form has to be notarized. I don't want to send a copy of his driver's license, SS#, etc if it's not for real! Just worried...

The form came issued directly from the State - official letterhead, envelope, phone number and case number to call, etc. I felt quite safe sending in a copy of my license because I had all the information necessary to verify where it was going. Plus, it's not like they solicited me for the information, I used the website to find I *may* have unclaimed property, the State followed up with an e-mail that they would investigate it then they sent the form to me, so really, it was like I made the request, not them, which, IMO lends further legitimacy.

You'd be amazed how much is out there. I found unclaimed money on both of my parents--several hundred dollars' worth each, as well as some stock. And some of my mom's stuff was OLD--it was listed under her maiden name, in fact, and she was married in 1968! It was sort of a pain to get the funds, especially hers, but I was able to do it. (Since both of my parents are deceased and I'm the only heir, I was the one who was able to claim it.)
If you're wondering whether or not it's a scam, you can always call the State in question directly, and they might be able to tell you over the phone if there's anything unclaimed. I'd start with the treasury department.

I think I found some unclaimed money for myself - same first and last name and city that I used to live in. The middle initial is for my former middle name (that I dropped when I got married), which makes me think it's a check that I know about that was mailed to the wrong address. Supposedly a new check (with correct address and correct middle initial) is being mailed to me, but I'd still like to have the other check back as well.

Yep, I did a search and found $443 after filing an inquiry through the VRS system in VA. I got the response letter this weekend. I have to call and see if it was pre-tax or post-tax contributions to determine if I need to roll it over into an IRA or not. Not much, but better than nothing!!
