Who had the worst celeb breakup?
From BRAD & JEN to NICK & JESSICA, 2005 was a shocker year for celebrity splits. Some we saw coming a mile away, but others took everyone by surprise, like DENISE RICHARDS filing for divorce from CHARLIE SHEEN and RENÉE ZELLWEGER splitting from KENNY CHESNEY just months after they secretly tied the knot.
Hollywood was rocked off its foundation at the beginning of the year with the announcement that golden couple BRAD PITT and JENNIFER ANISTON were going their separate ways. "We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate," Brad and Jen said in a statement. "For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another." Jennifer filed for divorce in March, citing irreconcilable differences, and the marriage was effectively terminated on October 2.
In March, after almost three years of marriage, one-time Bond girl Denise Richardsand her "Two and a Half Men" star husband, Charlie Sheen, suddenly called it quits. It was the six-months pregnant Richards who filed the divorce papers in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair have two children together, daughter SAM and infant daughter LOLA, and on a positive note, Sheen appeared on the CBS "Late Late Show" in November saying that "things are really good" with Richards, even revealing that he's now donning his wedding ring again.
March also saw the parting of ways of CHRIS KLEIN and KATIE HOLMES, who has now famously gone on to be one half of the pregnant "Tomkat" duo. So after five years as a couple, where did things shift? Chris explained to ET, "As people grow up their tastes change and I know that growing up and becoming adults the direction her and I wanted to go in changed a little bit. When it was time to split it was time to split and when you know you know." The actor also described how he thinks TOM CRUISE's future bride will be as a mom: "I know that when she and I had a relationship she was always very fond of kids and was always good with her nieces and nephews."
Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney's secret romance became public in May when they ran off to wed in the Virgin Islands. Sadly, it wasn't meant to last. The 'Bridget Jones' cutie and the country singer announced their split on Sept. 14 when Zellweger filed for an annulment. Later, Chesney told Country Weekly why the marriage may have dissolved. "I hit everything so hard this year," he said. "I had the biggest tour I've ever done, I had a record to finish that was real important to me, and, of course, I had something new in my personal life ... it ended up being too much."
In August, EDDIE MURPHY and his beautiful wife, NICOLE, announced that they were divorcing after 12 years together and five children. Nicole filed the petition in Los Angeles and Eddie released a statement saying, "The welfare of our children is our main concern and their best interest is our first priority." Eddie's older brother, CHARLIE, explained the situation to ET: "Everyone is surprised, everyone is heartbroken. Obviously, they came to a point where they want to go separate directions. That happens all the time. It's unfortunate but it's another part of life." The couple has four daughters and one son.
On October 1, ET confirmed that PARIS HILTON called it quits with her Greek shipping heir boyfriend PARIS LATSIS after a five-month engagement, despite that headline-making, reported $5 million engagement ring. Hilton was said to be the one to end the relationship, telling Us Weekly, "I'm sad to announce that I've called off my engagement. Over the last couple months I've realized that this is the right decision for me. We hope to remain the best of friends and I'll always love him." Latsis responded in a statement, "I don't know what the future may hold, but I respect her decision and appreciate the very kind and generous manner in which she is handling her very difficult decision. This was the best experience of my life and I will always be grateful for it." KATHY HILTON cleared up the details exclusively for ET, explaining that her daughter really loves Latsis, but because of her daughter's very busy career, it would only be fitting that her spouse also have a job and career too.
Less than two months after rumors surfaced that TORI SPELLING and her screenwriter/actor husband CHARLIE SHANIAN had separated and were living apart, the former "Beverly Hills: 90210" star filed official papers in October in response to her husband's request for divorce, citing those ever-popular irreconcilable differences. Just last summer, the once-happy couple tied the knot in a blowout ceremony at Tori's father's expansive estate with several former "90210" co-stars in attendance.
Last but not least, "Newlyweds" stars NICK LACHEY and JESSICA SIMPSON finally admitted, after months of tabloid rumors and publicist denials, that their three-year marriage was over on November 23. The couple announced the split just hours before the Thanksgiving weekend, saying, "After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways. This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time." Jessica filed papers in L.A. Superior Court just last Friday.
Other surprise splits (or not so surprising) this year included NICOLE RICHIE and fiancé DJ AM; KATHY GRIFFIN and her husband of four years, MATTHEW MOLINE; 'American Pie' stars MENA SUVARI and SHANNON ELIZABETH and their respective spouses; "Desperate Housewives" star NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN and fiancé NICKLAS SODERBLOM; CHRISTIAN SLATER and wife of five years RYAN HADDON; and VALERIE BERTINELLI and EDDIE VAN HALEN after four years of separation.
