Edited to clarify: the reason I thought this belonged more as a parenting 'discussion' thread than a 'group' thread is that who posts here will constantly be in flux, since, of course, babes grow up; groups like "Jan 06 moms" are more of a 'club' in the sense that it's a discreet group defined at one point in time. I hope that eventually, this thread will be a source of information on this stage of life, just as the cloth diapering, breastfeeding, babywearing, etc threads are resource threads, instead of "groups" - i.e. "Breastfeeding Support" instead of "Calling all Breastfeeders". :D

Just wanted to start out saying that everyone has such beautiful babes!

Ok, now the question is what are you feeding your child at this point?

My DS is 10 months and he is still getting mostly jar food and bottles/nursing. He does get a "taste" of almost any food DH and I eat for b-fast, lunch or dinner.

At what point do you start cutting out jar food and giving mostly table food?

I feel like DS eats more and eats better when its jar food (or yogurt or applesauce, etc). When he gets table food I feel like he doesn't eat as much and that worries me but I don't want to keep him on jar food forever KWIM?

So ladies, if you could share what is working for you guys I would appreciate it!!

Hello! My son, JFK will be 6 months old on July 5. Instead of joining the 0-5 months thread for a week, I decided to go ahead and come here.

Here is a picture of JFK:
http://images.snapfish.com/343%3C%3B%3A2%3B23232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E2327%3D%3A79%3 D537%3DXROQDF%3E23238%3C2978566ot1lsi

About JFK -- JFK was born January 5, 2005, at 4:54am. He weighed 5lbs 2 oz and was 18 1/4 inches. He was 8 weeks premature, but luckily only had to spend 10 days in the NICU. Currently, he weighs just over 15 pounds, but we have his 6 month checkup next Friday to find out for sure.

Kates

ce_Kathleen , I was wondering the same thing about food. We are still doing mostly doing jars, so I'm not sure how and when to make the transition.
I was thinking that closer to 1 year we'd try to include DS more in the meals that we make. But what do you do when you make something spicy or something that's not appropriate for a one year old to eat (can't think of anything right now but I'm sure there must be)? Gaw, the food issue is always hard isn't it?

EmilyBronte , your DS and my DS have similar birth stories. DS was 6 weeks early at 8lbs 7oz, and was in the NICU for a little over a week. BTW- your DS is a little cutie!

I feed my son (9 months) jars, yogurt, Gerber puffs, and Earth's Best Organic Crunchin' Blocks (like graham crackers). He also gets Cherrios and Graham crackers at daycare.

It seems like every time I try to feed him a more substantial food (like a finger food), it will still be in his mouth minutes later, which concerns me, so I don't think he's really quite ready for most finger food. He does a good job crunchin up his crackers, but it doesn't seem to carry over to other food.

ce_Kathleen
06-28-2005, 02:28 PM
Yes I have noticed too that when I give DS a taste of some things it "stays" in his mouth for a while.

One time, I had given him a small piece of cucumber (no seeds or rind just the mushy part) and like 20 minutes later I was changing his diaper when he sneezed and that piece of cucumber came shooting out and hit me in the face! YUCK

For the most part though, he does ok with stuff (really soft carrot chunks, bits of apple, small pieces of chicken, meat, he even tried potato chips thanks to MIL  )

My daughter is 10 months old. We are having a tough time with solids right now. Some days she loves to eat and other days I struggle to get her to eat a few spoonfuls. I keep thinking that the explanation must be teething. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks.

Right now my 8 month old just eats jarred foods. I keep wondering when to introduce finger foods to him. I tried giving him a little avocado the other night and he just choked and gagged on it. I am not sure if it is just that he doesn't like avocado or he couldn't chew it. I bought him some biter biscuits but haven't given them to him yet. I know that he knows how to chew because I use the mesh baby feeder with all different foods in it and he chews on that like mad. I just don't want my little guy to choke and have no idea where to start.

Hi all! I see a lot of familiar faces. I have an almost 10 month old son, Kyle...

http://images.snapfish.com/343%3C%3B%3C8323232%7Ffp58%3Dot%3E2336%3D864%3D427 %3DXROQDF%3E23238%3C7526374ot1lsi

Kyle is a big boy for his age. He was born August 31, 2004.

Food I'm right there with you all with the food questions. I feed Kyle generally jarred/pureed things. He'll sort of eat finger foods, but also keeps them in his mouth a long time. I have started giving him chunkier pureed foods to get him used to the texture since that seems to be the thing he doesn't like. I also let him try just about everything, although he's asleep before dinnertime. The only "real" food he seems to really like is yogurt. My doctor gave me the ok to give him just about everything. I was told just to watch the size.

Cocosmom If Kyle is teething, he doesn't seem that interested in eating solids at all either.

Kates

I just don't want my little guy to choke and have no idea where to start.
I'm the exact same way. I can't tell you how many times I've given Grady something and ended up digging it out of his mouth because I was worried he'd choke on it.

One good finger food that I give on a regular basis is whole wheat toast cut up into pieces. It gets pretty mushy and we find most of it in the high chair after we're finished, but he really seems to like it.

kmmommy
06-28-2005, 07:34 PM
It's so good to know that I'm not alone in the fear of choking. We've started giving Kaeden pieces of hamburger and things like that.

I'll have to try whole wheat toast.

Kaeden only has 2 teeth right now but it getting a couple others in. I guess that makes me more nervous - he has to gum everything.

Had to post about what Kaeden just did for the first time!

We live in a 2 bedroom apartment so the computer is in his room. He's playing in his crib getting ready to go to sleep. I hear what sounds like him playing with his diaper...sure enough the little sneak had taken it off!

I start laughing and he starts jumping in his crib! Too funny!

Thank God for my little man! Time to get the duct tape out for the diapers!!

Cocosmom I wonder if teething has been our problem lately! My DS is just getting his 2nd tooth and hasn't been eating much lately. I thought it was the heat getting to him and was really getting worried but now I wonder if it is the teeth.

DS loves popsicles! I was eating one yesterday and decided to share and he loved it! Probably b/c of the heat and his teething it felt good.

Kates Thanks for the tip on toast! I haven't tried that yet, how small do you cut the pieces or do you just let DC chew on like a 1/2 slice?

ez2luv(canadian!) - That is such a great picture of Belle! Did you have it done or take it yourself?

So nice to see some familiar faces!

Kylie will eat all of the 1st and 2nd jarred foods. I tried to give her stage 3 lasagna, but she wouldn't eat it. She eats Cheerios, puffs, wagon wheels, loves yogurt, has tried chicken, and apparently had a taste of a popsicle yesterday thanks to my MIL!

Sidsou
06-29-2005, 07:49 AM
ce Kathleen DH has given Kyle a popsicle too - rather licks off of his popsicle. Kyle loves it, especially when it's so hot out.

EZ2Luv Glad to see you here! Gorgeous picture of Belle!

Kaedan's Mommy I remember a nurse in the hospital mention that when they figure out how to take the diaper off to put it on backwards. I guess it doesn't really matter nowadays which side is in front (?) She said having the tabs go the opposite direction will keep them from taking it off - at least for awhile :)

Subscribing to this thread! Its good to see many familiar "faces" here!

Ryleigh just tried Cheerios last night, and I am terrified of her choking! She has NO teeth yet so she has to gum them. She seemed to love them though, and they were the multigrain kind.

Kelly: Gotta love it when they learn something new! I can just picture Kaeden doing that, sitting there with a smile on his face too I bet!

She is going to get Chicken and Broth tonight for the first time, so we will see how that goes. She eats all veggies and fruit that we have given her. DH has rubbed sour skittles on her tongue, and the face was priceless.

I can't wait to keep up with you all.

Has anyone tried those pampers First Steps pull-on absorbent pants or whatever they're called? I guess they are basically a pull on diaper that you can then take off the regular way. I'm thinking about getting some of these for when DS will just not cooperate while we are trying to get the diaper on. It can be tough to get it lined up when he is squirming away! Just looking for some feedback! This week they are on sale for 25 cents each at Safeway, which is what I usually pay for our Cruisers anyways.

CeKathleen: Around our house, we seem to attribute all crankiness to teething. My DD was born on 8/10/04 and she already has 8 teeth. So needless to say there have been a lot of sleepless nights in our house. I thought that 8 teeth already seemed strange but out ped said that it was in the normal range.
To all the other mommas out there how many teeth do your babies have?

SiValleySteph: Is was thinking the exact same thing about trying the pull ups. We haven't used the changing table since DD started to crawl. Right now I put the pad on the floor and try to keep her still long enough to clean her & put a fresh diaper on. It is pretty funny when she crawls away but it is a hugh hassel in the morning when I need to get out the door for work.

Aee any of the 10 month old moms giving their baby juice? RIght now she gets formula and water.

Cocosmom - My 8 month old has 4 teeth right now but when we were at the pool this weekend there was a little girl that was also 8 months old and she had a whole mouth full of teeth. I swear she must have had at least 12.

GREAT DEAL ALERT - Not sure if anyone else will be able to find it but I got a BOX of cruisers on clearance at Target for $13. So make sure that you check out those clearance areas if you are around there.

I am glad that I am not the only one worried about choking. After he choked and gagged so badly last time it scared the crap out of me. Maybe we will try some banana today.

Hi all- so gald to see so many familiar faces. I was Joann on WC (and Mom2alliwill on LJ). My son Will is turning 10 months on Sunday.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/mom2alliwill/will060905.jpg

Steph- we have the same issue with finding pieces of food in his mouth 5 mintues later. Unless it melts (crackers, cherrioes, gerber snacks) or I can mash it (avocado, banana) or put it in the baby safe feeder (all fruits) it is mostly baby food.

Any way, just popping in, it is nice that everyone seems to be moving together.

Hi there...over from WC too. Mostly a lurker, but thought I'd join in here.
Here is my son Tyler. He was born 11/20/04, which makes him just over 7 months. He was born 4 weeks early, so he's a bit behind on the milestones (not sitting up on his own yet, but he's getting there):
http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos1195/2/45/54/15/45/3/345155445203_0_ALB.jpg

Right now he's eating cereal with fruit in the morning and about a half a jar of #2 food at night, plus about 30 or so ounces of formula a day. He's such a good eater and we never have any problems with feeding...which could explain why he's almost 20 pounds already! :p

Suscribing... glad to see familiar faces from WC. :)

DS is 10.5 months now, so I'm in the process of planning his first birthday party. I'm also having the worst time struggling with diaper changes. The little one just refuses to lay still!

Kates
06-29-2005, 07:16 PM
ce Kathleen , we found that if we gave DS big pieces of toast he would shove the whole thing in his mouth and it would just stay there. So we've started to cut the pieces into maybe 1/2 an inch by 1 inch. I've been watching him like a hawk with the toast, I swear he tries to swallow those pieces whole.

Joelle , good to see you 'over here'. I'll be sending you an email about our trip to NS soon!

Cocosmom , 8 teeth already! Oh my that sounds painful! Grady has 4 teeth; they all came in over a period of 2 weeks.

Sidsou, that's a great idea about putting the diapers on backwards. DS is playing around with the tabs on his diapers now, I can just see him 'cracking the code' in the next few months.

Ameez, our DS was early as well (6 weeks). I was finding he was behind on alot of the milestones too. I'd look at what the other babies his age were doing and he was nowhere near any of them! He's just started to catch up now, it seems like in the past month he's learned to sit on his own without help, got his teeth and he's so close to crawling. I'm sure it'll happen that quickly for your DS too!
-------------
Funny little story....
Today was the first time I fed DS nectarine. I had a feeling he was swallowing the tiny pieces that I cut for him whole (the little piggy!). I was laughing about it with my mom and said 'I guess we'll find out later on when it's out the other side'. Fast forward to tonight, DH was changing DS's diaper when I hear, 'what the he** is this?' Sure enough, DS wasn't chewing the nectarine, there were whole pieces in his diaper! I guess we still need to mash up his fruit!

Jen, I'm so sorry to hear that nursing has been so painful for you. Between this and all the pain you went through early on, you deserve a nursing medal of honor! A year is a huge accomplishment and given the challenges you've faced, it's beyond huge. I hope whenever you decide to wean you treat yourself to something extra special to celebrate your accomplishment. And thank you for the compliments on Mia. :)

Yesterday was a little freaky. My mom and I took Zach out with us for lunch (hamburgers for us, green beans and carrots for him) and pushed him in the stroller for a bit afterward. We had to squeeze by a house that had overgrown brush blocking the sidewalk. Then we stopped for ice cream and the lady behind the counter said, "Something is wrong with the baby!." We looked down and he was covered--COVERED-- in vomit from chin to knee. Just awash in strained carrots. (He's fine. Don't worry.) The lady was great and got us water and paper towels. We started stripping him down and cleaning him up. Then, I saw he was clutching something, and it was a branch of Queen Anne's Lace from that gardener's nightmare of a yard we passed. He had reached out and pulled some and of course put it in his mouth and started eating it!! Most of it came up right then, but I saw more in his diaper this morning. My mom felt HORRIBLE (I had warned her not to get to close to the shrubs and weeds as she pushed the stroller), but I'm being nice to her, 'cause she's really an awesome grandma and I sure know that will never happen again now!

Thanks for the tip! I may have to try that!

Joelle ~ Not only did he have a huge smile but he was jumping up and down in his crib!

Hello ladies! Can I join? I recognize a few people here. I was ShyAnn on WC and am landenaj on LJ. DD, Danielle was born 12/15/14. That makes her 6 months 2 weeks!

Quick question for you ladies with older babies. We are going to Mexico when Dani will be 11 months. I am so afraid she is going to get sick when we are there, so I want to bring most of our own food and formula (milk?) for her. What are you feeding you baby who is 10-11 months? What are they drinking? Are they doing sippy cups primarily?

Thanks bunches!

BTW, all the babies are so cute!

ajlanden- DS is 10 1/2 months and is eating three meals a day of a mix of purees (Stage 3) and finger foods. He still nurses and is getting juice and one cup of formula a day from a sippy. Hope that helps a bit!

ajlanden - we were worried about the same thing, then decided to put off the trip for a while.
You can control the food aspect when they are this young, which is safe. Also, the pools there are treated so if Baby drinks the water, it's OK.
What about water in the hotel room?? Is it safe? Say, if they have a bath?
I know my DD drinks water from the tub.....??
Does anyone know about water fromt he taps at resorts??

Kates
07-04-2005, 02:41 PM
ez2luv, you would probably not be able to drink tap water from many (if any) resorts in Mexico. That would include bathwater ;) . In fact the resorts that I have been to in Mexico don't have bathtubs, just showers.

ajlanden, In terms of what a 10-11 month old eats, well that depends. I know with DS (who is 9 ½ months old) we are primarily feeding jarred food and cereal, with some snacks of toast and yoghurt. But I have a friend who fed her little girl the same meals they were having at this stage (just mashed up really well).

I think bringing jars of food, and cans of pre-made formula would be a good idea, that way you can control what you are feeding your DD.

ajlanden - DS is 10.5 months. He's eating stage 3 baby food, and I give some some food off my plate. He's also nursing 3-4 times a day. I give him water in a sippy cup with every meal. To be safe, I think bringing your own food is a good idea too. HTH.

Question for those giving the kids toast:
I do, but not sure what to put on it... I'm giving it to Belle plain, but when it cools off, it gets quite hard. Jams have lots of sugar....butter?

ButterflyJen
07-06-2005, 07:05 AM
ez2luv - I've done butter as well as fruit spread (Smuckers Simply 100% fruit). DD loves the fruit spread - I've only tried blackberry at this point.

No toast here, not on his own anyway. Jack loves bread of any kind. He is certainly my baby!

He is eating at least 8 oz of food at a meal and a 6 oz bottle. I make all of his food so I would assume that they are similar to a stage 2 jar of food. He does loves whole bananas though. I don't even have to mush them up for him. He will stick a half a slice in his mouth and go to town. Messy breakfast but worth it!

I haven't done really hard food for Gwen yet. I did buy Cheerios over the weekend and will try to introduce it within the next couple of days. I also got her some bananas, but I am not sure if she is ready for that.

G is sick again. I can't believe it. In the month that she has been in daycare, she's only really been there for 1 1/2. :(

Anyone besides me been bad and given their little ones french fries yet? The other day we were on a day trip and he was just staring at me while I was eating (he does that a lot now) so I gave him a FF. He just loved it! Do I feel guilty? Yes a bit. Will I stop giving them to him? Probably not. Anyone else?

Same thing happened to us, Jake was just eyeballing that french fry so I gave in a gave him a little bite. I felt a tad bit guilty but it has passed. I have on a couple of occasions given him one fry and he probably manages to get maybe a few bites in his mouth, the rest ends up mushed up in his hands.

I gave Kylie a bite of a cookie at our July 4th bbq...she was just staring at me, so I held it up to her mouth and she giggled and the next thing I knew, she took a bite...and she liked it. She cried when I took it away! So no more sweets until her 1st birthday cake!

I caved and gave him a FF when we went out to dinner this weekend. He was getting fussy and so I gave him one to play with. Most of it ended mushed up in his hands. I figure as long as I'm not feeding him huge plates of them or making it a regular thing that it's OK. I'll give him little bites of my desserts sometimes too.

We just tried whole wheat toast yesterday. I gave it to him plain. It was an awful mess, but he loved it. I'll have to try it with the fruit spread. I don't want to think about how sticky he'll be after that.

I think I'll have to get belle some fruit spread, just wasn't sure if it was too much sugar....I usually give her WW, though sometimes I only have Whole Grain in the house and she does fine with that. She kinda makes a face when she 'finds' a big piece of something, but it's fun for her to play with.

No FFries yet, I'm scared....
My friend gave her a lick of her ice cream a couple weeks ago, and she's a maniac since then! Everytimes she sees ice cream she freaks out like an addict.
I guess my in-laws fed her some perogy last night, they said she liked it.
(Is it strange that it pi$$es me off that they don't ask me first?? They just decide all sorts of stuff without passing it by me first. They raised their kids, now let me raise mine!)

Nope, not strange - totally normal, I think. :) My dad thinks it's his job to feed Anna the bad stuff. She had a taste of birthday cake when she was about nine months old, and he fed her ice cream last weekend. I just shake my head and let it go, since it's only been those two incidents (that I know of, anyway...).

Oh Edward has had FF, ice cream, cake. I'm nervous about giving him things, but figure since I can control what goes in his mouth, then I can give him a treat once in awhile. Never more than once a week, mroe like once a month. He enjoys the new textures.

Tried toast the other day and he digs it. Now were going to try eggs.

Mommy to 9 mth old (girl) and 6 yr old (boy). Some of you I know, ez2luv and cpbride from the other site.

My Pie had her first hot dog this weekend, only a piece. But there's so much gunk in hot dogs I don't know if I'll give her more anytime soon.

She loves Ice cream, bread, french fries, chicken. And my family is always sneaking her something, the other day my sister gave her milk and I had to get on her because she didn't know about milk allergies and what not.

Must try toast this weekend.

Wow, Abby is food deprived! LOL. Nothing for her but baby food purees (with a few lumps). Yesterday I gave her sliced banana at lunch time. She wasn't sure what to do with them, but she loved their feel and managed to get a few pieces in her mouth. Tons of allergies in my family though, so we're limiting her intake for good reason. No eggs for her for a looooong time. We're not even sure about real birthday cake when she turns one. :p But we'll see! She has her 8 1/2 month WBV in a week and a half and I'm looking forward to asking her ped about food and what we can give her! :)

Well, we still haven't tried eggs yet, since I'm out of them and we are leaving for a week so I'm not going to buy any. Next week. :) He does eat fresh fruit with gusto and last night at Olive Garden, he ate some of my chicken marsala without the sauce.

Other foods he's eaten:

Fruits of all kinds in small peices and very ripe
Cooked veggies
pasta
mashed potatoes and baked potatos
zuchini
cookies, small bites
a bit of cheesecake (grandma's idea)
cranberries (didn't like those)
lemons (didn't like those)
rice
saltine crackers
grahm crackers
pretzels
biscotti

I'm sure there are others, just don't remember. 95% of his meals are stage 3 dinners and stage 2 fruits/veggies. We give him finger foods to top the meal off and let us take a few bites of our meals.

I have noticed a lot lately that even after Jack has finished a big dinner if he sees either me or his dad eating he gets really fussy and wants some of our food. Anyone else with this problem? That is one of the main reasons that he has tried so many table foods. It is hard to sit down to dinner and listen to our DS cry because we are eating and he isn't, even though he had a complete dinner just minutes before.

Table food that Jack loves:
pasta
any kind of fresh fruit (soft)
any kind of veggie (cooked)
bread
potatos (any kind)
applesauce
eggs

That is just a small list. Pretty much anything that he can mush he will eat.

Hello! I'm Cindy and my DD Simone will be 8 months old next Tuesday.

She currently eats rice cereal and bananas for breakfast. Lunch is typically squash or peas or carrots mixed with pureed chicken. She LOVES it with peas.
Dinner is more of the same plus a fruit for dessert like pears or mangos
We did try Apple juice diluted 3:1, but she became super consitpated, so we switched to white grape juice or pear juice instead.

So far, (knocking on wood) I've been able to make most of her food and freeze everything until needed.

One question: When is it okay to add a bit of dairy? I've read so many conflicting things. I'm worried about milk intolerance, so we've put off many dairy items like yogurt and cheese etc.

Well, I'm glad to be a part of this group!

Welcome CMW and Simone! What a cutie!

I've heard a lot of things about dairy too. We don't give Kaeden milk yet, but have started to let him have some yogurt and cheese within the last month or so. He loves yogurt! If you're concerned about it I would contact your doctor as he/she knows Simone best and will be able to advise accordingly.

I want to join this group too!

My Caden is 8 months old.

Annie Our boys are so similar! Caden has to eat something ANYTIME he see someone else eating. Like Jack, he will have just finished a big meal and see us eating and cry until he gets some. So far, the only table food he's tried is mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, bread and he got a chance to momentarily suck on a dorito complements of his 2 yr old big brother! I can't even tell you how much he cried after I took that dorito away.

Jumping in too!

Kyra Louise is 9 months old - born 10/15/04

Our little nut ball is finally starting to cover some ground with her crawling. I figured she was going to walker instead of a crawler.

No teeth yet but she has been a bear for the last couple of days so I think something has to be brewing.

Food - mostly all jar and now onto Gerber puffs. I tried some real banana mushed up today and she wasn't interested. Might have just been time of day or she just doesn't care for bananas. But she has decided that when she is full - it's time to blow raspberries. It's nice that she has a standard method of letting us know - but man oh man she can be a messy little bugger!

Ok I think that I may have the beginnings of a picky eater. Jack never minded eating the veggies like green beans and peas, then just this week he will not eat them unless they are mixed with something like carrotts or sweet potatos. Anyone else have a picky eater all of a sudden? Also he has become very "hands on" with his food. He would much rather feed himself then let someone do it for him. Last night he didn't want to eat anything off of a spoon. He would only eat food that I placed on his tray. Oh my goodness what am I going to do with this boy?

ButterflyJen
07-12-2005, 07:23 AM
annielynn - Anna has been like this for a while now. She's generally OK with the veggies (except peas - she hates those and always has) but is starting to dislike purees/being fed with a spoon. I can get pureed fruit in her IF I mix it with yogurt. Otherwise, no go, we're on to finger foods. :)

Gwen is worst. Starting this week, she has been refusing to eat solids. She used to eat everything we put in her mouth, but now she would bolt her lips tight and turn her head very, very fast.

Chicksinger

annielynn Zach is fighting to always hold the spoon now, and he's complaining about purees, but he will eat almost any finger food off the tray. He feeds himself deli turkey, shredded cheese, broccoli, asparagus, peas, pears, peeled 1/4ed grapes, peaches, mango, banana, macaroni, o's, Gerber Puffs (baby crack!)...I try to sneak in yogurt and "mush" while he's picking up his next bite.

Franni she would bolt her lips tight and turn her head very, very fast. That is exactly what Zach was doing before I realized he wanted to feed himself. He will now eat and eat if he's in charge, but whine and cry if it's just me and a spoon!

Food Zach is 9 months old now, and although still BF 6 or more times a day, he is fully into solid food, finger food, and feeding himself. He gets

one meal with an instant iron-enriched cereal base (1/2 cup) plus a fruit puree like pear, prune, banana, peach, or mango.

one meal with a homemade cereal base (oats or barley) plus another fruit mix-in

one meal with a dairy base, either yogurt with sweet potato or cottage cheese with avocado (his fave!)

He feeds himself veggies at lunch and dinner.
I don't give him "our" table food, but a baby version, like "our" oatmeal, but plain (no sugar) and ground up smaller, or torn off pieces of deli turkey and shredded cheese instead of a bite of my sandwich (because of mayo and mustard). I make his fruit and veggie purees fresh, and we also keep 3 or 4 jars on hand in case we take him out and can't pack food from the fridge.

It seems like food is the main topic of conversation here. I am still kinda unsure about what to give and when... Does anyone have a good book title or any info from their pedi that they can share? It seems like all my books are really good at what solids to start with but kinda leave me hanging as to what to do now.

Thanks!

Joseph has been doing this for a while already and it's getting really really old! He will eat goldfish, some bananna and avocado. He was also eating a few bites of carrots but now that is out the window as well. I am just at wits end with him, it's soooo fustrating. We have had to introduce some formula every once in a while as I am just not producing enough for a 22 lb boy anymore. And also partially because he isn't eating much anymore, his sleep is TERRIBLE. Can you tell I am strssed out!!

Franni
07-12-2005, 01:44 PM
Chicksinger I know this may sound simple but how did you introduce solids? I have tried to give her cheerios, but she simply didn't know what to do with them. I put them on her tray. She would pick them and hold it. I have tried to put it in her mouth, but she just didn't know what to do with it.

Should I start then with fruits instead of cereal?

I can try to give her "our" food, but do you know what is acceptable food for our babies' age? I am afraid of giving her something that might be bad for her.

Franni
07-12-2005, 01:46 PM
Also, has any of your babies started to "feed" themselves from a bottle? Gwen can hold her bottle to her mouth, but when she does, she would take it out to look at very often that a feeding would take forever.

Food, food, food... it's all so confusing. I try to stay away from conversations about food because every kid is so different and I start worrying when I hear about babies shovelling in all this food. My son is 9-1/2 months and is mostly made of breastmilk. :D Last week he didn't want anything to do with food - we thought maybe he was tired of purees and tried giving him more finger foods, but he didn't want those either. I think his teeth may have been bothering him (he also started hating tooth brushing). Now he's back to eating and gets a yogurt for breakfast along with some graham crackers (Earth's Best Organic Crunching Blocks), he gets a cracker at school for snack, almost a whole jar of veggie and 1/2 jar of fruit for lunch, puffs for snack, and then for dinner - maybe a few bites of something and some cracker. He's a carb lover. Just today I tried some bites of peach with breakfast and he seemed to like it. It also looked like it went down. We tried some bits of carrot last week (cooked) and he didn't really eat it - it stayed in his mouth. Then DH asked me why I was trying so hard to get him to eat finger foods and I realized that I was being influenced by reading about all these other babies on-line and hearing about other babies at daycare who eat a lot more than him. We are going to follow his pace more and try not to rush him. I'm pretty sure he will be off purrees by the time he's in kindergarden  and possibly off breastmilk by then, too. :p

I just noticed today that he would hold a piece of cracker and then bite off chunks, so I decided to give him a whole cracker. (I usually break them up.) He was able to get only one or two bites off before he dropped it, so that didn't work to well.

As for bottles, I think he can hold his own bottle, but he only gets them at daycare, so I'm not totally sure if he holds them or not. I think his teacher holds him and feeds him (from the bottle!) to try and get as much breastmilk in him as possible, but most of the other kids in his room are holding their own bottles.

It's like food is the new sleep as far as baby topics for our age babies go. Speaking of sleep, my baby doesn't sleep through the night and still eats a few times at night and I'm so glad people have stopped asking me about that. It was driving me bonkers that every person and their mother would be like "How's your sleep? Is he sleeping through?" Like, he wakes up, yes, but it's no big deal (most of the time). Now everyone assumes he sleeps through and doesn't ask. Thank you!

jeggink
07-12-2005, 02:13 PM
SiValleySteph I could have written part of your post, especially with sleep. I still keep getting asked if he is sleeping through the night and he has yet to at almost 10 months old, and the asking is getting really old. Maybe I am crabby cause of sleep deprivation  LOL. Food, I wish DS would eat what yours does, *sigh*. Oh well, I guess I better get used to this for a while longer. At least I am producing almost enough BM to feed him exclusively BM. Glad you are to :).

Franni Joseph for the most part will hold a bottle or sippy cup, but he won't hold it high enough for any liquid and doesn't always get the right part in his mouth  .

Hi!
I'm mom to 2 girls ages 2.5 years and 10.5 months. I see a lot of names I recognize from the other site!

My little Delaney is eating like a pig lately! She will eat anything. She loves turkey and chicken and veggies of any kind. She is still mostly breastfeed, but the food she eats now is all finger food. She just won't eat the mushy stuff anymore. I don't know where it all goes though. She has started loosing weight again and is back down to about 14.5 pounds. Her ped thinks it's because she crawling everywhere and almost walking! I will figure out a way for her to gain some weight! I'm sick of everyone thinking she is only 4 months old.

For those of you who do not know, she was born 5.5 weeks early and was in the NICU for 3 weeks. She has always had a problem gaining weight.

I'll post a pic when I figure out how!

Hope you are all doing well!!!

Food....
Yup that's the topic on my mind as well. SiValleySteph I also could have written your post.

Andrew is 8 1/2 months old and only eats maybe 1 jar total of pureed foods a day and all the rest is BM. I sometimes give him fresh fruits in his mesh feeder but if I try to give him small chunks of food to try he gags. So he is not ready for finger foods yet. He is growing great and weighs about 22 pounds.
He also wakes up at night to eat still. Usually twice. He is sleeping in his crib most of the night too. I just can't believe how big he is getting already.

Paula R

Caden holds a bottle and has been doing that since about 4 months. We think he started holding the bottle because he is so greedy and wants to control his own food. He is still bf and does not seem to be slowing down on the amount of milk he drinks. I thought that as they ate more solids their milk intake would decrease?

The only finger food I've tried are the Gerber puffs because Caden still does not have teeth! I don't know why I am so anxious for him to get teeth because I am not loooking forward to him biting me. I have so crazy fear that he will never get teeth.

His sleeping is crazy because some night he will sleep thru the night and other nights, he wakes up 2 or 3 times. I never know what kind of night I am going to have.

I have come to find out that my son knows how to and can hold his own bottle he just doesn't want to.

I got a phone call twice last week where she told me that she caught Jack drinking the milk out of my nieces bottle. I guess that when she was done with it she left it on the floor. He proceded to crawl over to the bottle and tip it up! Um honey why can't you do this at home?

franni Do you mean how did we introduce finger food? Zach loves banana (ZACH LOOOOOVES BANANA!!!!!), so I cut some small cubes and put them on the tray. I picked them up and fed him some, and I picked them up and put them in his hand, and then he started picking them up, too. I had already noticed that he was putting absolutely everything in the house in his mouth already, so I figured he would put in food, too. Cheerios were next, then Gerber Puffs. The Puffs are baby crack!! Zach QUICKLY learned to pick out all the puffs first, then go back for the Cheerios.

Here is a really good website that tells you which foods are acceptable for which age when Introducing Solids (http://www.allaboutmoms.com/solids.htm), although we introduced plain whole milk yogurt and cottage cheese before meats, and we've only done deli turkey, no other meats so far.

Bottle Zach can hold his own bottle when we hold him on the boppy, but not if sitting on his own. He doesn't tip it (or the sippy cup) back far enough to get anything out yet, although he doesn't get to practice much. He's not a cuddly kid, so we use a nightly bottle time to snuggle.

Thanks, Chicksinger that's precisely what I had wanted to ask. I will try the banana first. She loves bananas though I think they might be too binding for her. Usually DD sticks everything into her mouth, when I gave her cheerios, she just holds it in her hand. Are Gerber puffs good for baby? ARe they like a "cookie" for babies? Or is it more like a cereal?

Hi everyone. I've been in the 0-5 month thread for a while, but DD, Becca, turned 6 months today, so I can join now! :-)

Here's a photo:

and, since we're talking solids....

She eats rice cereal with a fruit for breakfast, and the same fruit for dinner. We just went from one solids feeding a day to two this past weekend. I've been bad and haven't introduced too many veggies yet - I really need to get on that. Tried squash and she didn't like that, and I have peas and carrots ready to go at home. As you can see from the photo, every day she wants to hold her own spoon - I usually give her one to hold while I'm feeding her. She is given her two solids meals at daycare right now. There are a lot of allergies in my family, too (particularly me) so we're starting slowly!

Not really moving too much yet, but based on the things she was trying last night, I think she's going to be crawling pretty soon. I find her sleeping on her tummy most mornings now, too.

Franni - I'd say they're more like cereal than anything else. They're actually kind of good. :o

Welcome twinnyme! Becca is adorable!

My DD turns 11 months old today....man, how time is flying by!

Kylie holds her bottle too. She was doing it for a while a couple of months ago and then stopped. A few weeks ago, I had to run to the bathroom, so I put both of her hands around the bottle and she sat there and held it until she was finished. Now that is all she wants to do. Had the "I'll do it myself" attitude!

twinnyme - Becca is adorable - Love all of that hair!

franni - the Gerber puffs are like cereal. I have tried the fruit wagon wheels and they aren't that bad.

ButterflyJen - Happy 11 months!! :D

giggling :p Steph, I SO could have written your post!! LOL

My 8mo DD has slept thru the night only TWICE! I am SO glad people stopped asking me too. I was getting a complex.

She now has 2bottom teeth and this week the top 2 made an appearance! I am going to miss her gummy smile. Boo hoo. :)

DS is the same way, he's 10.5 months old and probably has STTN about 5 times. I've just started telling people that he does STTN when they ask instead hearing their advice.

Sometimes I wonder if the kid will ever STTN. DH and I have come to terms that Jake will never be one of those kids who sleeps well during his first year of life but we are sure hoping for a change when he turns one next month.

DD was sleeping 11 hours for a week, but that just feels like such a long, long time ago. :)

People are still asking me though. I just roll my eyes.

Since I am working full time, I sometimes enjoy the snuggle time even when it's 4 in the morning. SOMETIMES.

I'm so glad that a lot of you could relate to my post! Not that I'm glad that you aren't getting a full 8 hours of sleep straight through, but that there are others that know what I mean. ;)

I was starting to feel like I was the only one, so I almost didn't post!

Hello! I just wanted to join you ladies. My DD's name is Cadence and she was born on 11/8/04. She's 8 months. She has 7 teeth (4 top and 3 bottom) and one more on the bottom is peeking through already. I joke that she's been teething since birth but she actually got her first teeth around 4 months if I remember correctly.

She gets solids once a day because she's just not overly interested yet. She eats 1/3-1/2 a jar per sitting. She bites EVERYTHING so we haven't been able to give solid solids like biter biscuits. We try and she chokes, gags and usually throws up so something tells me she's just not ready :)

Well, I'll try and add my 2 cents when I can!

Franni

Question to the solids feeders:

How did you start DC on solids like cheerios, toast, etc? I gave DD cheerios. She does not know what to do with it. I gave her zwieback (sp?) toast. She chomps on it, but if it breaks off and happens to be in her mouth, she spits it right out. So she knows how to use the chomper but does not know how to swallow. I am wondering if there's anything else I can do.

All suggestions are welcome.

ButterflyJen

Franni - that's what I did too. Eventually DD realized what to do with it. I think it helped, though, that we also gave her some of those Stage 3 jars (they're a little chunkier texture, so DD had to kind of chew those up).

My son is being so weird with the Stage 3 foods. He spits out all of the chunky parts like the little pasta pieces and swallows the puree part. He knows how to chew and swallow solids. He eats the fruit puffs, wagon wheels, crackers, cheerios, cottage cheese, grilled cheese, small pieces of chicken, etc. I wonder what it is about the Stage 3 foods that he isn't liking.

It looks like this thread hasn't been touched in a while, but I thought I wanted to bump it up since my son just turned 6 months.

Me: Jess, 23
DS: Nathan, 6 months

If anyone is still looking at this thread, when did your babies sit up alone? My son can sort of do it, but not completely yet, he's like a weeble. How long does he have to sit up by himself for it to count as sitting up?

twinnyme
08-02-2005, 10:37 AM
Jess - I was just looking for this thread earlier today, because I was wondering where it had gone. Obviously, I didn't look long enough (I couldn't find it)....

Anyway, Becca is 6.5 months (will be 7 months on the 14th) and she is JUST starting to be able to sit up on her own, though I still sit behind her or place a pillow behind her - because she doesn't have it down completely yet. IMO (just my opinion!) I will consider her being able to do it on her own when she can sit for about 5-10 minutes playing on her own. But I have no idea what the "technical" definition of sitting up really is!

Right now, she's also VERY intent on standing.... when I try to sit her down, she goes rigid and forces herself to a standing position, though of course she can't stand on her own yet (thank goodness! she's not even crawling yet, I can't even imagine walking!). Is anyone else's baby doing this?

Other updates, everyone?

Franni

DD used to that all the time. She would stiffen her legs and try to "stand". That was around 5 months. Now she pulls herself up to standing and cruises everywhere with one hand on a piece of furniture.

OUr big thing now is eating. I am slowly adding more "regular" food into her diet and am slowly weaning her away from jarred foods. I feel a little lost doing this though because I am not sure if she is going to get enough nutritutionally.

She is sleeping better now. she often sleeps for 11 hours straight, but sometime s wakes up once to eat. She seems to have learned to calm herself to sleep, which is great for me.

jess&dan

Twinnyme: Nathan does that also, goes rigid and wants to stand all the time. He sits for a little, but falls over. It's comforting to know that someone else's baby is the same! :)

Franni: How old is your daughter? I've been wondering how long Nathan will stay on jarred food....

It's comforting to know that someone else's baby is the same! :)

Exactly! Isn't that what these boards are for? :)

While you're all talking about moving from jarred to other foods, I'm still trying to figure out how to get DD to eat any food. It is SUCH a huge challenge. She swivels her head all around when I'm trying to feed her to look at things (she often does this with the bottle too). Yet she may be doing that for 10 minutes and then really want a bite, so I keep trying, but it takes SO much time and can get very frustrating. I would think she doesn't want it, but when she gets going on eating, she does seem to want it (though not all the time). I've tried feeding her in her booster seat, in her regular high chair, in her bouncy seat; I've tried moving the bouncy seat to an area of the house that's not too distracting (i.e. not too much to look at), but of course I want her to also "eat at the table" and get used to that. Did anyone else get frustrated by this, or have it be SO frustrating? I try to be as patient as possible, but it is very challenging. I would also go back to just the bottle for a while longer and then try solids again in a while, but we're concerned about her weight (born at 8lb 12oz, now at 13lb 14oz as of last Tuesday, though she has gained 4.5 inches, and the weight may just be catching up with her). Pediatrician said to increase to two solids per day, which I'm trying (though I go by her, and there have been days since he said that that she's had only one solids feeding, or even none at all). We have a weight-check appointment on August 19th. Btw, I know that babies get most of their calories and nutrition from formula or breastmilk until 1 years old, but that's what he said about solids.... I'm going to discuss it with him again on the 19th.

I did give her a bite of banana yesterday morning, which she seemed to enjoy:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d623b3127cce930430cbd1fd00000016109AZOHLhy1bo

I then substitued jar bananas and she actually ate some!

My nephew refused most jar foods - I think he ate them for about a week and then my sister started giving him real food.

Franni
08-02-2005, 12:03 PM
DD is 9 1/2 months now. We started on the jars at 6 months, but she took a month off when she was sick. So I would say she's been on it for 2 months. I think I will slowly phase in regular food and keep the jarred foods for the trips and emergencies.

DS: Roman, almost 6.5 months

Just reading along and thought I'd respond to this:

Roman does this as well--as soon as I sit him up he goes rigid and flies backward because he wants to stand. He loves standing and has been doing it well for months but is not sitting on his own yet. He can sit unassisted for a minute until he topples over. :)

A question for moms making your own baby food: when did you increase the amount of food intake? DS is on sweet potato and I started by giving him one food cube until it was apparent he wanted more. Now I give him two cubes and he still wants more!

Also, how often do you feed solids? Once a day? Twice?

TIA for your help!

Candy
08-15-2005, 05:41 AM
Maya is now eating 3 cubes. I started just like you with one cube. Currently, she eats in they afternoon, and before bedtime she has a fruit cube or 2 with oatmeal cereal.
I don't plan on adding another solid meal unless she seems super hungry.
She's seems fine right now on those 2 "meals" and breast milk.

Claudia, where is he? I can't see him! :(

I think we're getting too old for this thread. DS is 10-1/2 months now. No steps yet, but he is crawling and standing and cruising and generally just into everything. :) He loves to climb stairs. We have let him play on the play structure at the playground a few times now and he climbs right up to the top. (With mommy tagging along right behing him!) We just bought a gate for our kitchen because he was driving me crazy by opening up drawers and throwing all the ziplocs or straws on the ground. Those were in the 3rd drawer up, so his reach has definitely extended in the last couple weeks!

He's working on his 9th tooth now. This one is a bit of a pain, I'm afraid. Sleep is suffering - his and mine!

He didn't take to solids until around 8 months when he got interested and started with jar foods. Now he is off jars at home and just on finger food stuff. He still gets 2 jars at daycare for lunch where he has peer pressure. :D

I'm trying to push solids a bit more because I plan to wean off the breast pump at 1 year. 6 weeks to go! I will still breastfeed at nights/on weekends. I just don't want him to be drinking as much whole milk as he is breast milk right now at daycare. But we'll see.

I almost can't believe that DD is almost 10 months. It always seems longer than that. I can't imagine what life was before her anymore. Either that or the sleep deprivation has fried my brains and wiped my memory :D

She has hit all the necessary milestone. Loves to crawl, pull herself up, cruises and babbles LOUDLY. She eats jarred food and some veggie puffs. I am going to introduce some regular table food for her in the next few weeks. But admittedly, jarred foods are a little more convenient for me - time wise.

Here's a pic from our last beach outing.

Re: solids, well, it's taken us a looonggg time to get anywhere.... Becca began at about 5.5 months, and she has FINALLY gotten somewhat proficient and faster at eating. We were doing just one solids a day until our last ped. appt. He encouraged us to move to two, which we have done. We have a weight-check appt. on Friday (at 7.5 months) because we were concerned about her weight.

I have a question, though: I sort of fell off giving Becca her cereals (rice) because she was starting to do so well with fruits AND veggies, and I felt like the cereal was slowing her down. But my in-laws (who watched her Friday morning for a while) said I should still be giving it to her, as did her primary caregiver at daycare (who was on vacation last week) – today she queried “cereal and fruit for breakfast?” and I shamefacedly admitted I’d stopped giving her the cereal. (It's been bothering me that I'd stopped because in the back of my mind, I kept thinking it's iron-rich or something. I had been planning on asking the pediatrician about it this Friday when we go.) Does anyone have any experience of not giving cereal to their baby or recommendations of mixed cereal-and-fruit jars of baby food? I’m going to check out the store tonight, I think.

She is not on any finger foods yet, mostly because I'm afraid of her choking. But she's had licks of a banana, watermelon, and a couple of other things, plus a tiny tiny bit of vanilla ice cream on Sunday - at the wedding (I couldn't resist!).

twinnyme I have stopped giving DD cereal because she really does not like it. She only took it for a day or so. I have to mix it with other things for her to take it. I was also concerned that she would not be getting enough Iron, but the ped started us on vitamins at around the same time (6 months, I think). The vitamin is enriched with Iron and flouride, so that concern has been put to rest. The ped suggested the vitamin because we had started giving more solids.

Oh all these bebe pics are so fun!
My name is Stacey, and my DD, Mia is 9 months old. I was SEB on the "Other Side". ;)
We had Mia's well baby visit yesterday- 17.1 pounds, 27" long. About the 25% for both, but she's doing great, so I no longer worry about her being on the small side.
Mia is crawling like a mad woman, pulling up and cruising wherever and whenever she can. She just started climbing stairs last week and it is by far her favorite activity of the moment. SHe has 4 teeth- 2 on the bottom, 2 on the top. She's a big eater- usually a half banana and half piece of organic, whole grain toast or oatmeal for breakfast, some diced fruit and veggie puffs or "Oatios" for snack, 4 ounces of yogurt and 4 ounces of fruit or veggies for lunch (jarred stuff), and 6-8 ounces of veggies and tofu or veggies and rice cereal for dinner. We give her all organic with the exception of those darn Gerber Puffs which Mia is TOTALLY hooked on!
I'm also breast feeding about 5 times a day, though I plan to start weaning around 10 months and be done with BF by the time she is 12-13 months. We'd like to start TTC #2 sometime after Mia's first B-day (November), and because I am a recurrent miscarrier, my doc doesn't want me nursing during the first trimester. Anyway...fun to hear what all of the babies are doing these days! I am loving this stage, though I can't help but miss my little infant! :)
Here's a recent Mia Pic (I will remove it in a few days or so):

mia's mama Mia is adorable. particularly love the pucker shot.

Glad to hear that someone else is thinking of TTC within the next few months. I am thinking of stopping my pumping by her first birthday (in October) and then taking a break. Maybe starting TTC in the new year. I guess I want to have my body for 2 months between food manufacturing and baby manufacturing. TTC is probably going to take time, but I think psychologically I need the 2 month break.

The babies are adorable! I posted in here awhile back and it is so nice to see so many familiar faces! Zoey is a tad over 10 months old and is crawling, cruising, standing alone for a few seconds, saying mama, dada, baba, yumyum, waving, clapping... the things we get so excited about now ;) She is also going to be a big sister in Feb. Yikes! All this talk about first birthdays is the worst! I cant believe it is almost here :(

As far as food goes, she eats just about everything we eat (that os healthy). It is more convenient to use the jars, so she gets those too.

I gave Lauren the Gerber Puffs and she did okay with it (even though it says to give them when they are crawling)...Sometimes I would even break them up into smaller pieces....and I also used the mesh bag thingy and put fruit in it.

I was pretty scarce with what I gave her because I was so paranoid about her choking.

Maren is now 7 months old! WOW how time flies! She's cut her first tooth and is scooting around a lot (trying to crawl, LOL! She's got the hands and knees part just not the actual crawling)

As for food, we're just giving pureed fruits and veggies along with cereal right now. I have thickened it up since we started, but I not quite sure where to go from here!

I love seeing how everyone's doing!

I'll have to try some cheerios soon!

Nathan was 7 months old yesterday! So just wanted to share some pictures!

He's doing so well! Has 4 teeth, army crawling, and getting into everything! Growing up too fast! We just changed his whole feeding routine in hopes that things would work out better and they have! I think this has been the toughest part so far, figuring out how to feed him what and when. We're going to try real bananas this weekend and I believe I'm starting beef tonight.

Question.... - When your DC started standing (or rather, pulling him/herself up to standing, etc.) did you notice a change in the nap schedule?? (Or I guess any other developmental milestone.)

DD has just figured out how to (very shakily) pull herself up to knees / standing. Around this same time, she has totally given up any daytime naps until about 4 or 5pm.

I am thinking this is just a phase (as in she is excited by her new skill). Any thoughts / experiences? Thanks!

DS used to nap every 90 minutes, but when he started cruising, the schedule evolved into 2 long naps a day, 9:30 - 11 and 2:30 to 4. Goes to bed at 7, wakes at 11 pm and 5am to nurse, gets up for real at 7.

DD is just starting to pull up! But I haven't noticed any change in her nap schedule. She usually takes 2-3 a day...one in the morning, one around 1pm and maybe another around 4 or so. Then she goes down around 8pm and will wake up a couple times during the night  and get up for good around 8 am if I'm lucky!

DD hasn't begun cruising yet, and she's only pulled herself up once (by fluke, she fell down, onto her boppy, and then was able, because of being slightly higher, able to pull herself up). But she wants to stand ALL the time now. I haven't noticed her sleep habits changing too much, though. She still takes at least one daytime nap and sometimes two, and still sleeps 11-12 hours a night. I'm sure one day, though, I'll find her pulling herself up in her crib in the middle of the night - we lowered the mattress last weekend!

She is already crawling and pulling herself up to standing, and is having a blast exploring the house (where is my delivery of babyproofing stuff?!?!) :)

Hi everyone. I was actually going to bump this thread a couple of days ago, too, and then didn't get around to it. Good to see how everyone is doing!

Becca was 8 months a week ago today. For the first time this past Saturday she got on her hands and knees (see photo below) so, although I thought we were going to skip crawling, she may just do it yet! She isn't really pulling up much yet - except to reach her hands up to me and whine until I "finger-walk" her around.... She's also getting MUCH better at holding her bottle, and also is using her sippy cup a little more. That was another small success on Saturday - she held her cup and drank some water out of it! Yay! And on Sunday, she drank an entire bottle holding it herself while in motion - she was in her stroller. Very exciting stuff for all of us! She's still mostly on baby food and trying to transition to three "meals" a day. I'm not sure how soon I want her off of baby food and onto real food because I've seen so many kids who are such picky eaters and I feel like with the baby food at least she's getting some nutritious stuff.... So that's slow-going.

We've had lots of other kids' birthday parties recently - my 2-year-old nephew's last weekend, and this weekend, a first birthday party. Fun stuff!

Her hair is still growing like crazy and I've bought numerous (and numerous types) of hair accessories in the last few weeks in order to try to manage it a little.... Here's the latest (last photo, I promise!):

Lauren is 9 1/2 months old and shes just starting to stand on her own without holding on to anything for about 30 seconds or so...shes been crawling and pulling herself up since she was 7 months old...but no steps yet or even cruising the furniture. Shes very good about holding her own bottle and she used to do really well with the sippy cup and then went through a period where she wanted nothing to do with it. Now Ive bought the Nuby soft spout cup and she drinks out of it very well. I still give her 3 meals a day with baby food with snacks in between...she also gets lots of finger foods of whatever we are eating for dinner. She has two teeth so far....and tons of hair!!

time to bump up this thread!!!!

Maren's almost 9 months now! WOW!

She's consistently crawling, and pulling herself up and cruising  We're starting to feed her some food from our plates (just a few tastes) and she seems to be enjoying it! We're still BF'ing, even though I've had a few supply issues, we're still pulling through! She's the joy of my lift!

And some newer pics!

I'll play! Becca will be 9 months on Friday. We just had her ped. appt. this past Friday and she's 16 lb. 10 oz. and 27.5 inches. She just started crawling on Tuesday - yay!! - doing the army modified crawl thing. She's still loving to "finger-walk" and still whining and holding her hands up to do it all the time, but I created a "cruising course" of her exersaucer, learning table, and other things, and that helps relieve my poor aching back a bit.

Still on 2 solids (baby food) a day, though we also are trying to feed her more table food (very little) and branching out a bit. She's sleeping great again, thank goodness, and we're really looking forward to Halloween. Her cousin (my sister and her husband) are coming to visit and we'll go trick-or-treating. Her costume is also below, along with some other newer photos!

(I'll be back with photos. Becca's calling!)

Question RE: Solids...

How do you know when to start foods that require chewing (basically anything other than a puree?)

chiffani
10-10-2005, 06:38 PM
CUTE pics ladies :)

Koala - we did a bit of trial and error. When we saw her taking interest in our foods and chewed while we chewed we gave her a fruit/veggie puff and she choked and vomitted it back out so we waited some time and tried again. She was so used to just putting back the pureed food that she tried to immediately swallow the puff and so we figured she wasn't ready. HTH!

It was trial and error for us, too. Aidan seemed really interested in anything that was on my plate  so I tried a couple of things and he did really well, so now he eats more foods with a variety of textures than just the purees.

Hello Everyone!

I am new to this forum, and a bit late to join...but with Natalie being my third baby, it is better late than never! :)

Anyway, she is going to be 10 months old on the 19th of October...and she is SO little! Does anyone else have a baby that same age?

She only weighs 15 1/2 pounds right now...she doesn't look sickly or anything, and she eats like a horse, but I am still worried. She was a preemie, and weighed 5 lbs. 10 oz, but I would have thought she would be a lot bigger now!

With my other two kids they weaned themselves of breastfeeding at 4 months and 6 months (even though I wanted to do it for a year). She is still solely breastfeeding (with table food of course), she just doesn't take formula. Could this be why she is just so tiny?

KOALA GURL- My 9 1/2 month old LOVES to eat the newer line of Gerber called "Fingerfoods". They have some puffy things resembling cheerios, and some dried fruit. The best thing is, they can feed themselves (work on their fine motor skills) and it melts in there mouth! No choking hazards! :)

Toodles7966 - My DD is very small, too, and I have been pretty worried about it. She'll be 9 months on Friday and she's 16 lb. 10 oz. But she was a week late, was 8 lb. 12 oz. at birth, lost a pound before we even left the hospital, and has been essentially on the 10th percentile ever since. Which is odd because DH and I are not that small ourselves.... But we just had her 9 month visit and the pediatrician was pleased with how she's doing. Maybe she'll just be small. Oh, and she's been formula fed from the beginning.

As for solids, I haven't chimed in because we're still struggling with that. DD has been a very slow eater from the beginning (with her formula) and it seems like the same pattern with the solids. We have tried Cheerios and the pufffs but she just plays with them and sometimes puts one in her mouth. She does nibble on the wagon-wheel-shaped ones, though.

Toodles-Gosh, she is beautiful!!!!!!!! I don't think I would worry about her size. If she was a premie, she is going to be smaller!! But if you are concerned, check with your doc. I don't think the breast milk could have anything to do with. In fact, some of the b/f babies I know are WAY bigger than my FF one!! :) (BTW, our girls are only 4 days apart. Danielle was born Dec 15.

Koala_Gurl-I agree, it is mostly trial and error. You can also start giving them "thicker" purrees. Like mashed bananas or avocado or even mashed potatoes and see how that goes... Then move on from there.

mommy2maren-She is a complete doll! I love the costume!

My girl FINALLY started crawling last week. She is almost 10 months, so it was time. But now I wonder why I was in such a hurry! She into every thing!:p

DD is on the small side also...She was 15lbs 10oz at her 9 month check up. She is 30 inches long, so I think shes just going to be tall and lean like her dad! She is FF now also.

Aug2002Bride - Wow, your DD is tall. I was hoping that Becca would be taller at her latest appointment - but between 6 and 9 months she grew only one inch, to 27.5 inches. But I guess it'll all catch up with her eventually.

Btw, I forgot to give one other update. DD has SO much hair now that she has her own little hair accessories bag within the diaper bag.... My sister had given me a Vera Bradley diaper bag with matching purse - and matching eyeglass case, and the eyeglass case now doubles as her hair accessories holder. Thanks, mommy2maren - I still can't believe it, either, but nope, not one strand has fallen out (much to my aunt's distress; her granddaughter didn't have any hair until 2 years old, and she kept insisting DD's would fall out). :)

As I always say, though, the poor kid - growing up with a low-maintenance hair mom.... I'm the type who airdries her hair while on the way to work! I'm working on it, though. And I've learned tricks - put her in front of a Baby Einstein DVD when I'm putting it in ponytails, otherwise she won't sit still. We still haven't cut it at all, maybe after 1 years old, just to shape it a bit.

I'm loving all the photos - and updates!

ETA: one more photo - of her in her Halloween "costume" - we're keeping it very simple. We often call her "Becca Boo" so we're just going with that for this year:

Toodles- Your daughter is quite the looker! Those eyes!
My DD is small too...she will be 11 months on Friday and as of 2 weeks ago is only 16.8 pounds. She was average at birth (7.5 lbs.) , in the 50th % at 2 months, and has dropped lower in the percentiles every checkup since  I think she is around the 10th % now.
I used to stress about it, but have given up. She eats like a horse, and is meeting all milestones on time or early...both DH and I are thin and she is uber-active, to I am attributing it to that ;)

Mia took her first steps on Sunday and spent all day yesterday practicing..sniffle- my baby is now a toddler :( :)

Hello everyone! I'm new to CC and I guess this is where I belong. Everyone has such beautiful kiddos! I have a quick questions for you all. DS is 10 months old and he's still not that interested in solids. He eats both purees and finger foods. But its an accomplishment for him to finish 2 oz. of baby food or eat 10-15 bites of finger foods in a sitting. Is this odd? He's growing fine so I know I shouldn't worry, but its really starting to wierd me out.

Thanks

Can you believe I JUST discovered this thread?? Doh!

Anyhoo, my daughter will be 7 months old on Sunday! I can't believe how fast she's grown! Everyone wasn't kidding when they said they grow up way too fast! I'm pretty psycho about logging in each and every thing she does LOL....maybe because my mom never did and my sisters and I always wonder what age we were when we did certain things. At her 6 month appt a few weeks back she was 18 lbs 6 oz and 27 1/2" long. Here are her stats from the past few months (5 months to now) ......

5 MONTHS OLD...
8/18/05 - Carrots for the first time. Loved em. Ate the whole jar!
8/20/05 - Officially mastered sitting up.
8/21/05 - Pears for the first time (first fruit!). Loved em.
8/24/05 - Bananas (only ate half because she wasn't too hungry).
8/27/05 - Teeth brushed for the first time.
8/29/05 - Started shaking things (toys/blankets).
9/2/05 - Peas for the first time. Didn't really care for them
9/4/05 - Moved up to her "big girl" car seat (Britax Roundabout)
9/9/05 - Applesauce for the first time. Hated it. Literally gagged & threw up. Maybe the texture because it isn't smooth?
9/10/05 - Mastered turning on and off her Fisher Price Aquarium (it hangs on her crib). Watched and videotaped her doing it more than 3 times in a row this morning (after waking up because I heard it going on and off over and over and just thought she was kicking it).
9/11/05 - Top two front teeth poked through! Also pulled herself up in her Pack N Play (we had to lower it).
9/15/05 - Started "rocking" - trying to crawl!

6 MONTHS OLD...
9/16/05 - Grab and pull crawling.
9/23/05 - Can get into a sitting position from her tummy or back on her own!
9/24/05 - Said "daaad"
9/25/05 - Keeps saying "dada, daaady, daaad, ya ya, alaooo"
9/26/05 - Tried some Gerber Puffs for the first time at Aunt Teeters' house. Made the icky face at first, but then ate them.
9/30/05 - Officially crawling on all fours!!
10/10/05 - Tried fish (halibut) for the first time while we were having dinner and she loved it!
10/11/05 - Had an unsalted saltine cracker for the first time. She thought she was so cool and loved munching on it.

.................................................. .................................................. ..

Told you I was nuts about it! LOL

Right now Paige absolutely loves those Gerber Puffs. She sees the container and starts going nuts. She loves to feed herself and she gets so excited as soon as they are in her mouth. She immediately smiles and says "Mmmmm" haha.
