View Full Version : Open Toed Shoes - Pantyhose?

I know this is a ridiculous question. But I need an answer, anyway. :) Tomorrow night is my husband's holiday party. I found a black dress with sparkly accents on it, and located the perfect shoes this weekend. The dress hits a bit below the knee and is a satin material and the shoes are black satin with crystal accents, strappy and open-toed. My dilemma....wearing panythose with open-toed shoes seems all kinds of wrong to me. But are bare (pale!) legs in the winter any better?
Help! :)

I personally do not like the look of nylons and open toed shoes but I understand your problem. I have never it but how about a spray tan. I believe they can adjust it to make it light so it doesn't look so fake.

They make toeless pantyhose. That might work if you choose a more neutral color.

Don't think I want to get a spray on tan. I'm okay being pale. ;)
Re: toeless pantyhose, wouldn't that look weird since my dress is shorter? Maybe I just don't understand where they end. :p Perhaps I will check them out tomorrow at the mall.

They end right at your toes, hopefully right around where the strap of your shoe is:

If you're going to wear open toed shoes, go with toeless pantyhoes.
Go with the toeless hose if the strap of your shoe conceals the seam really well. Otherwise, skip the hose. It's okay to be pale. It is not, IMO, okay to have webbing between your toes when wearing open-toed shoes.

Ah, this is similar to my research on the net. So many differing opinions. :)

My concern with toeless panythose is that the straps on the front of the shoe are pretty thin and crisscrossed. Not sure if they will work!
I feel like my legs are going to be pretty chilly saturday night. Pale and chilly.

Nooooo! No pantyhose with open-toed shoes! Please? Even the toeless hose look weird, IMO. There's clearly hose on your legs, with sheen, and then there are your toes, uncovered, possibly a different color than your hose-covered legs, KWIM? And what if the edge of the hose doesn't exactly match the strap of the shoe? And it peeks out? Eek!
Anyway, I have strong opinions on the subject. Sorry ;)

I'll be the vioce of dissent. OF COURSE wear pantyhose! It's Virginia and I'm guessing it's pretty darn cold by now. ;) (FWIW--my sister and I have an ongoing, and admittedly ridiculous, disagreement about this; she would say definitely don't wear them and I obviously I would say do wear them... somehow we get into this conversation a few times a year in the winter...)

ITA. I know that Sally Hansen makes Airbrush Legs stuff that you can just spray on and not have to do a full fake tan.

Just buy sandlefoot pantyhose (no seam at the toe).
And here's a few reasons why I think wearing *sandlefoot* pantyhose with sandals is okay. (and I used to work for a hosiery company)
a) who the heck cares what other people think of you! It's cold out! If you want to cover your legs, cover your legs! That's your business, and you want to be comfortable.
b) sandlefoot pantyhose you can hardly tell you're even wearing pantyhose (in a nuetral color of course - nothing too "brown", go for the palest you can find , usually called an "Almond" colour.
c) will you be sitting most of teh night for dinner, with your feet under a table? Will you be dancing most of the night where people won't have a chance to really study your toes?
d) who the heck studies your toes?? I'd be more concerned of people scoping out my feet. We tend to worry a lot about our feet and our shoes, when a majority of people don't even look down there and wouldn't notice anyways.

I was just coming in to ask this same question.
I have DH's work party tonight and I can't imagine not wearing pantyhose because its freezing here, but I wasn't sure about the toe thing. Maplekitty had a good point - who is going to see your toes, or who is really going to care?

In my opinion, never wear pantyhose with open toed shoes. Yes, your legs might get cold but that's the price you pay. At my office party last week I noticed that the wife of one of my coworkers was wearing pantyhose with her open toes shoes and I cringed! ;) To me that is a big no-no!

The ONLY time I think it's ok to wear hose with open toed shoes if if most of the front is closed up and there's only a small 1940s style peekaboo open toe thing going on.
The rest of the time I think it looks awful. If it's so cold you need hose, you should be wearing more substantial shoes anyway.

I think it is odd that some women around here wear skirts in the winter with no pantyhose, regardless if the shoes are open or not. It's NYC! It's been cold!
As for those who wear pantyhose with open toed shoes, i think that is fine too, as long as the panythose is nude and sandalfoot. You can find those ultra sheer hose in a subtle black but they don't have a lot of stretch to them, so in a wearing or two they are ready for the garbage.

Really, does pantyhose keep you warm at all? IMO, NO! Unless you are wearing tights, and that's a whole other topic.

1) I hate hate hate hose in general and really hate hose with sandals. I agree with the PP about how they do not really keep you warm anyways.
2) If you are worried about being cold, wearing sandals is not going to help.
3) If you feel the undying need to wear hose, I would recommend regular hose because if people are looking at your feet, they are apt to notice all but your toes are covered and that will look silly IMO.
and finally
4) It is supposed to be pretty nice tomorrow night in Alexandria. Right now, up in Baltimore it is 50 degrees. I know tomorrow it is supposed to be even nicer. I do not think I would personally be worried about the temp.

Another thought.... do you have a long dress coat that you could wear? That way your legs would be somewhat covered when you're outside. I agree with the PP that you should wear regular hose if you do decide to wear it.

If you care:
One more vote for no hose. If you want to wear hose for warmth, choose a closed-toe shoe. I've gone out in the winter with bare legs and sandles, and not been cold. You'll be indoors most of the time, right? I think going bare legged with sandals makes you look more for confident with your body too, like you don't need to hide behind hose.
Also - I'm not a fashionista, but hose-with-sandals is one thing I always notice. I won't think you are a bad person, I just notice it.
The toe less hose looks weird to me. ITA with the poster that said your toes will be a different color than your legs.

ITA. People do notice these things. It unequovically looks ridiculous to wear hose and open-toed shoes (save for the 1940s peep toe). It's especially bad with the black stockings. Toeless are pretty bad, too, IMO.
If you're that worried about being cold, find some sexy boots to go with the dress, but pantyhose aren't going to keep you that warm compared to none at all.

Wow. Its a little scary to me that people are so opinionated about this. ;)
Kindermom is right. Weather here tomorrow is supposed to be fairly nice. No hose. :) As a note, who has ever known anyone who has an undying need to wear hose? I actually have an undying need to avoid them if possible! :p
Thanks!

Can to buy a pait of nice closed-toes shoes instead?

Nope. I love the shoes I got, it should be warm enough, no big loss. :)

Open toe shoes/sandals look kind of cool when worn with DARK TIGHTS.
Regular hose, no.

Someone else made a good point. If you're willing to suffer the cold because you LOVE the strappy sandals, then forgo the hose! It's like wearing socks with Birkenstocks (cringe): if it's too cold to have your toes exposed, you shouldn't be wearing Birkenstocks!
And ITA also with whoever said that pantyhose do not keep you warm!
So, I'd say, either wear hose and closed-toe shoes, or sandals and no hose.
Anyway, it looks like you decided no hose already. *whew* ;)
It's ridiculous how strongly I feel about other people's foot fashions. :D

I went to DH's work party last night and wore open toe shoes, without pantyhoes. After reading this thread, I thought everyone would do the same, but most of the women had on hose with open toed shoes. I even had a couple people comment that I was crazy to not wear hose. Maybe its just a crazy Michigan thing!

Well, I went to my party with my open toed shoes and no hose. Saw others there doing the same. It wasn't necessarily warm out last night, but I was fine without. The inside of the party was plenty warm and I didn't regret my choice.
:D
Thanks for the help!

I went to my party Saturday night with my strappy dressy sandals and no hose. But I would say about half the women there had open toed shoes or starppy sandals and hose, black hose no less. It looked horrid but at least they had the benefit of not being completely barefoot on the dance floor once everyone's shoes came off for dancing!
