Anyone else hooked?

I totally love this show, and am hopeful that John and Charlotte are gonna win. They deserve it. John is a natural, and has really developed into a consumate dancer.

Kelly Monaco has so improved, and I am happy to see her make it as far as she has. But, she isn't in the same league as John.

I was wondering when someone was going to start a thread on this show.
In high school, I was a NKOTB fan, so I was hoping that Joey McIntyre would win. Joey and Ashley aren't in the same league as John and Charlotte, but I wish they would have made it to the final. I really hope John and Charlotte win.

I was really bummed to see Joey go. He has tremendous natural talent much more so than Kelly.

Part of it I think is that their partners either help or hinder them. Charlotte is a clearly a great teacher, and her choreography and music choices are outstanding. Alec, is making Kelly look alot better than she is. Poor Joey got stuck with Ashley, who IMHO isn't a great choreographer, and she makes terrible music choices for the dances.

I was sorry to see Joey get the boot, as he does have so much natural talent and is such a cutie.

I agree with you about Charlotte. She seems to have mastered ballroom dancing, and there is something about her that none of the other dancers have. Even her hair is perfect every week! John is really suited to her and I love, love, love to watch them dance.

Do you think if Joey had a different partner, he would have done better? It seems he tries so hard every week and the judges always just "like" it. The week he wore the GI uniform, I thought he did so well but the judges didn't take to it. I am going to miss him. :(

I hope this show continues, but next time all of the couples should stay and carry a score so that no one is sent home and we get to see all of the couples each week.

I think Kelly is awful. She's much improved, of course, and I give her a ton of credit for workign so hard and comign so far, but she's not a natural dancer and her movements always look horse-y and awkward to me. The judges complimented her on her hip movements last week but I think she looks awkward adn liek she's trying to be sexy but missing the mark terribely. I think Joey was far far better than her and I agree that he was hindered by Ashly and her poor music choices and her efforts to alter the original styles of the dances. Foxtrot is Fred and Ginger elegance and grace and she made it campy and silly.

I definately think Joey would have done better with a different partner. The first nite I could see enough about the raw talent availible that I figured the finals would come down to Joey and John. It's a shame that Joey didn't get a better partner.

And I totally agree Villanelle75
"Foxtrot is Fred and Ginger elegance and grace and she made it campy and silly."

Ashley consistently did this. Bad music choices, bad choreography, not showing off Joey's natural strengths etc. IMHO Joey got a raw deal.

Kelly is not really much of a dancer, but her partner Alec makes her shine.

I LOVE this show! John and Charlotte have been my favorite from Day One and I am hopeful they will win. Kelly has come quite a long way, but as others have said...she still misses the mark. She wins most improved in my book, but that's not saying much.

I think John is a natural, he always look so polished and I always know that he is having a great time. He and Charlotte have a great affection towards eachother and it really shows in their routines.

I really hope they do this again soon! I can't believe it's already over!:(

I've watched a couple of times. Can somebody explain the voting to me? For example, with the most recent show: Was it already official, but unknown to viewers, that Joey and Ashley were going to go? Then why have them dance again if their performance on the most recent episode doesn't even matter? Am I the only one this confuses?

villanelle75
07-01-2005, 12:19 PM
The vote-off is based half on the judges score for that night and half on the audience score fromthe dances the week prior. So Joey and Ashley went home based on the judges score of their Foxtrot and Pasa Double and the viewers votes on their waltz and Samba I think it was Samba?).

If there are three couples, the one with the highest judges score gets three poitn and the lowest judges score gets one point. Add to that three points for the one with the most viewer votes from the previous week and one point for the least viewer votes, and you have the final score. So, it isn't until after the judges give the scores that the "loser" is determined. HTH!

I love this show! It's so neat to watch. I think the panel of judges they have are pretty accurate and fair in what they say. If only Tim and I could afford to dance like that for a living-what a wonderful way to live.;)

Wouldn't that be a kick Nikki???

I used to do dance competition when I was in my 20's, it was a blast but a heck of alot of hard work too. Sure kept me in good shape though.

I wish my hubby was more of a dancer because I would love to get back involved with it recreationally.

I've really been enjoying this show...in fact, it's pretty much the ONLY show I've watched consistently this sumemer! Normally I'm a total TV addict, but sometimes in the summer it's nice to take a break from watching 2 hours or so of TV every night.

Anyway, I think John & Charlotte have it in the bag. They are just so much more poised & polished than Kelly is, even though she has improved.

Can't wait for next week! :D

JenniferEC I agree about Joey & Ashley. I enjoyed watching them dance & he seemed so good at it, but just I don't think that they were what the judges were looking for. He was following her lead, and at times, becoming the teacher himself.

I was sad to see Joey & Ashley go. (At one point in time, I thought I'd marry him!) But, I wasn't surprised at all. I figured that they would be voted off this week. I hope that John & Charlotte win. He has a great personality and has become a great dancer.

I have a feeling that Kelly and Alec will end up winning strictly because she has a huge fan base from GH that are obviously voting for her. She has definitely improved, but, no, she is not as good as John.

I so hope they bring back this show again-I am really enjoying it and would love to see other stars participate!

[B] (At one point in time, I thought I'd marry him!)

When I was a senior in high school, I had no doubt one day I'd be Mrs. Joey McIntyre. I have to admit, watching him on this show reminded me of how much of a crush I used to (and still do) have on him.

I will be very bummed out if she does, because the show IS after all about dance.

It seems to me that John and Charlotte are the best dancers in the competition. While kelly and ashley tried to show and play off of their bodies, Charlotte makes the dances look elegent and classy.

Talk about a sleeper hit! I totally laughed this show off as a joke when I first saw the commercials. Now I'm hooked! My hubby won't admit it, but he's totally hooked, too. I catch him watching it out of the corner of his eye when we're in bed. Hee.

I agree that Joey got the short end of the stick with Ashly. And poo poo on you silly women...didn't you know that he was *my* future husband??? ;)

I love this show!!!!

I was a HUGE New Kids fan in Junior/Senion High and really wanted Joey in the finals. I also like John. I noticed how hard the judges were on Joey. I wanted to say, 1. Hip Hop is not the same as ballroom, don't expect so much and 2. He is the man, learning these dances AND having to lead...cut him some slack. I agree, though, that Ashly is not a good teacher.

I think Kelly has improved, but I think it is her partner and her half naked outfits that stand out, not her.

I think John is very classy and dances very well. His partner is a little too in love with him (she rubs his chest a little too much for my liking, knowing he's married), but they work well together.

I really enjoyed watching Joey. I felt he was natural, comfortable and having fun. Plus, he used to be my fantasy husband.;)

Ashley consistently did this. Bad music choices, bad choreography, not showing off Joey's natural strengths etc. IMHO Joey got a raw deal.

I actually liked Ashly's choreography a lot, it was very fun, but I think she took too much leeway with the style of dancing each time.

I like John, he deserves to win and I think Kelly has earned spot #2. I miss watching Evander, he was a lot of fun to watch.

"but I think she took too much leeway with the style of dancing each time."

This is exactly the reason I thought her choreography was "bad", although bad really isn't the right word, as her style had alot of presence and excitement. It was just bad for what the judges were looking for. Problem was, she wasn't really catering to the "ballroom" style, and I know that hurt Joey, alot.

You really see that difference when you see Charlotte and John. I actually think that Joey is every bit the dancer, in terms of raw talent, that John is. But, Charlotte is a consumate ballroom professional, and it shows. Her choreography and music choices have been absoultely dead-on, and it has helped pull John to the lead.

I can't wait til Wednesday :)

Oh, this show just frustrates me. Kelly should have gone weeks ago this is a dance compitition not an acting compitition and she has only made it this far because of her soap opera fans voting for her. I was also mad that rachelle hunter went she was really good. I grew up dancing since the age of 5 to about 24(danced for Disney for 7years) so I know a thing or two about dancing. I do admit ballroom and partner dancing is kind of hard. I was always much better dancing alone, since I always tried to lead. I really want John to win, if Kelly wins  then......well I don't know I'll just be really mad.

How did I miss this thread for so long?

I've been enjoying the show as well. I was really sad to see Joey and Ashly go, because I was rooting for them. I think Ashly just had a more liberal interpretation of the dances than the judges would have preferred. They seemed to like Charlotte's more classical interpretation. (I say this without knowing anything about ballroom dancing, but that's what it seemed like to me.) I liked Joey and Ashly a lot though. They had a lot of spunk and energy. Oh well... Now, I'm rooting for John and Charlotte.

Femmie & PrincessButrcup : I gotta confess too. I thought this show was going to bomb when I saw the commercials, but boy was I wrong! I didn't think I would like the show, but it's become a favorite for my DH and me. We're both rooting for John and Charlotte. John's expressions are hilarious! :D

I know it's the grand finale this week, so here's my question:
Was there a point to last Wednesday's voting? Because John and Charlotte got such a large lead last week, would the points awarded to the team with the most votes even matter? It would seem that they would definitely be the winner. Am I wrong?

granada
07-04-2005, 12:33 AM
anjuli ~ I don't think the points are cumulative. I think this week's viewer votes will count 50% in the finals and the judges' points next week will count 50%. They won't take into account the judges' points or the viewer votes from last week. At least, I think, that's how it's been happening. I don't know if it will be done differently for the finals. So, Kelly could do really well next week and blow the judges away, and then who knows...

Ok, now I'm really going to bed...

Yep I agree, and personally, I think that is really wrong. I too have a dance background, I did ballroom competitively for 5 years in my 20's, and the viewer vote by non-dancers is carrying far too much weight. This is not a popularity contest, it is a DANCE contest.

I think the show's producers really set this up wrong. The viewer vote should NOT count for 50% of the vote. It has the power to bring a mediocre dancer like Kelly into the finals, and that is just not right. 25% might have worked ALOT better and been alot more fair.
Just my humble opinion.

I am so glad to see this show has so many fans though, it's fun to discuss it :)

DH is obsessed with this show. He missed it last week because he had a class and it dawned on him on Friday that he had missed it. Actually, he yelled to me, "How did we miss the show?" I laughed at it at the beginning too, thinking that it was going to stink, but it's pretty good!

I think that John will win. Kelly has a huge fanbase, though.

It was interesting because I went out with my boss and some coworkers, ranging from mid 20's to early 60s and we were all discussing the show, all watching it. So they definitely have a wide range of ages for a fanbase.

"His partner is a little too in love with him (she rubs his chest a little too much for my liking, knowing he's married), but they work well together."

Actually, that is just part of the "act" of creating the chemistry between the couple that competition judges look for.

When I was dancing competitively (many years ago), you would have thought that my partner Frank, and I were lovers in every way. However, he was as gay as gay could be, and the "chemistry" was something we actually worked at, to create the energy that judges like to see. In other words, it wasn't romantic in the slightest, but was part of what we added to the dance routine to give it that extra "notice" factor.

Honestly, I am quite sure that is exactly what you are seeing between John and Charlotte, and nothing more.

I love this show! I also danced competitively for several years in college and this show is making me seriously miss it. John and Charlotte should absolutely win. IMHO, they are beautiful together and so elegant.

I can't stand some of the music that other couples have used for the dances. One of the most important parts of these dances is the emotions they are supposed to evoke and the story they are supposed to tell. There is just no excuse for dancing the Paso Doble to Eye of the Tiger! Maybe that's inflexible of me, but that song does not conjure the feeling of a bullfight to me.

Coming to the party late, as usual. Just found this thread! I am hooked on this show, too. I agree completely that the music should match the mood of the dance and I'm going to go a step further and say that the costumes should complement both the dance and the song. It really, really, really annoyed me when Joe wore the vintage army uniform for the Jive to Elton John's "I'm still standing". Ummm.... No.

Yeah, the song selection has puzzled me from the beginning. I couldn't believe they used Britney's song, "Toxic", for one of the dances! My DH and I took ballroom lessons for about a year and I don't remember dancing to very modern songs (i.e. pop songs). Part of me believes that the dancers are *encouraged* to pick more pop songs to attract a younger audience. This way the show will appeal to all age groups.

Just saw this on cnn.com. Apparently, we are not the only ones watching this show. :)

'Dancing With the Stars' dominates
Hit ABC show tops ratings

NEW YORK (AP) -- During what is normally the year's quietest TV week, the only things making noise were the shoes gliding across the stage on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."

The penultimate episode of ABC's ballroom dancing series was seen by 18.6 million viewers last week, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was by far the week's most popular program and one of only five programs to reach an audience of more than 10 million.

ABC has been repeating the previous week's "Dancing With the Stars" episode right before the new one on Wednesday night -- and even that telecast made Nielsen's top 10.

Fox's new drama "The Inside," with 4.2 million viewers last week, has been met with a collective yawn.

With its strong lineup of repeats, CBS again won the week, averaging 7.1 million viewers (4.9 rating, 9 share). ABC (4.0, 8) and NBC (4.2, 8) were in a dead heat with 5.9 million viewers, Fox had 4.3 million (2.9, 5), UPN 2.4 million (1.6, 3), the WB 2.1 million (1.4, 3) and Pax TV 610,000 (0.5, 1).

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 8.1 million viewers (5.7, 12). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 7.7 million viewers (5.5, 12) and the "CBS Evening News" 6.6 million (4.7, 10).

A ratings point represents 1,096,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 109.6 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

I have NO idea why the judges were praising Kelly's last performance. She messed up at least three times. She even screwed up the very last move. She slammed right down on her knees when coming down from the lift. And right before that she couldn't even keep up with her partner; it looked like she forgot that whole sequence.

I am so disappointed! John and Charlotte turned in another amazing performance and really should have won the competition!

mierin

07-06-2005, 08:10 PM
Y'all are all exactly correct. After seeing those perfect 10's, I had to run the TiVo back to check all the times that she sort of "hung out" in a pose, waiting to move on to the next step. And of course to double-check that I wasn't mistaken, she really DID fall at the end from that lift.

I mean, anybody can fall out of a lift, I danced and I've done it. But in addition, she messed up some steps, and even more noticable to me, it was obvious the routine was choreographed to be easy but look hard. She did a lot of quick hip movements, but very little quick footwork. And her partner choreographed it so that she would have a little "lag" time to catch up to things, times when I noticed, for example, that she would bend her knee and just wait there for a count or two, and THEN start to dance.

Ugh. This whole time, I was blaming her fan base for the popularity vote, but then the judges totally let me down. I understood Carrie Anne trying to be a little more lenient, since everyone was totally decrying her for "hating on Kelly" and "being jealous of Kelly's beauty", but tonight was just UGH!

Man I just wasted 6 weeks of my TV watching life. I agree that was total crap!!!!! They should have kept the audiance votes out of it to begin with, her GH fans are what made her win. It should have been based on talent and consistancy from week to week and Kelly was not consistany with her dances at all. I am just completely annoyed with the whole thing. Even though I got hooked on it, I kind of hope they don't do another season of it, I don't think I can take another season of it. Kelly NEVER wore a costume that covered more than 25% of her skin. IMO her outfits were always trampy compared to the other competitors. Also, I think Bruno and the other male judge (can't think of his name) were first all over Rachel and then Kelly. All Kelly did in her free dance was shake and I'm guessing those two loved it! I thought Bruno would be more into Joey and John, but I guess he really does like the women.

And if Kelly acts as well as she dances, ABC doesn't have to worry about me tuning in to General Hospital.

The ABC message board is absolutely aflame with disgust over the outcome.

This post particularly struck me:

"I do have credentials that entitle me to judge amateur and professional dancers, and Well; I am stunned, especially at the judges for awarding 30 points ( a perfect score ) to a dance that was sloppy , rushed and to dancers that were a bit over excited , out of time (Kelly mostly) with the dance routine in relation to the music. And I could go on......
John and Charlotte should have been the true Ballroom dance winners, again they showed what real dancing and dance connection is ,
Bravo to John and Brava to Charlotte, wonderful performances again !!!!!!!!!
It was close to perfection and more deserving of 30 points in both dances than Kelly and Alec 's Freestyle.
And as real Ballroomdancers know, perfection is something we strive for, come very close to obtain, but never quite get, so we keep at it.........
John and Charlotte came very close,
Kelly and Alec still had a long way to go...........

Anita Hall-Dokman
7x Dutch Amateur BallroomChampion
2x Dutch Amateur 10 Dance Champion
4x Dutch Professional Ballroom Champion
Finalist European-World -Open British- US Open- Asian Open Championships"

Another example
"Anyone with a Marketing background can tell you, if you study the course of the shows, especially the finale, that Kelly and Alec were pre-chosen to win. It was a classic set up. The final dance routine was loaded with mistakes by Kelly - she was ahead of Alec and stood, visibly waiting for him to catch up, she was late on other steps, and was very inconsistent. Then to be scored 3 10s, was something right out of a Hollywood script. And the whole show wreaks of a plot to boost the underdog to the winner's circle. (That plot is way too predictable and far too over-used). It was evident that John and Charlotte were far superior on a more consistent level. There is no arguing that Kelly improved dramatically throughout the 6 weeks, but for her to be chosen as the winner was just plain sad. Supposedly 50% of the vote was determined by the public. But how do we know. I know that I was never able to get through on the phone lines no matter how many phones I used and the voting online was not always very user-friendly. I'm just very disappointed in the show for its seemingly blatant staging and false representation. That's just sad."

Last one I promise, but it sums up where I am now at ( I won't be watching this show next season)

"Obviously a scripted ending ... the lack of integrety by ABC and the Judges is a black eye for what was otherwise a very good show. If their dance truely rated a 30, then John's and Charlotta's easily rated a 34! What motivates corporate stupidity to force this kind of a sham on the public, and what happened to the integrity of the judges ... or how much were they paid? I'm sorry, I don't think Kelly deserves to be congradulated."

I can not believe that she scored a perfect 30....she never really danced a "perfect" routine.

gayle

She never, IMHO (and I have some minor credentials myself) should have scored above a 7. Not one of her routines deserved anything above that.

It was a set-up, and that disgusts me.

Ugh. I'm still so disappointed today.

This quote:

Anyone with a Marketing background can tell you, if you study the course of the shows, especially the finale, that Kelly and Alec were pre-chosen to win.

makes a lot of sense. I knew as soon as Kelly got that perfect score that they would win and that it was a set up. I suppose it was supposed to make the audience "feel good" because everyone loves an underdog.

In the end, I just feel cheated and manipulated. Way to go, television execs. :(

Article from www.msnbc.com ...Underdogs spin to victory on ‘Dancing’
They came, they stunk, they improved, they won

COMMENTARY

If you know someone who saw the first couple of episodes of "Dancing With The Stars" and then went on a European vacation and has been gone ever since, try this line out on her: "Kelly Monaco won." You're guaranteed a surprised look, if not a muttered swear word.

In case you weren't aware that Kelly was the underdog going into Wednesday night's finale, the producers were sure to mention it about 300 times to make sure you became aware. Despite having looked early on like a hoochie mama with the class of a corn dog, Kelly had slowly improved over the last couple of weeks and ultimately pulled her way into the finals quite respectably. But in the final showdown, she would face early favorites John O'Hurley and his partner Charlotte. Could Kelly possibly triumph?

The evening opened with both final teams performing their favorite dances, a serious error in judgment for a show in which novelty is everything. Most of us watching at home, after all, don't know a thing about ballroom dancing. Our play-by-play commentary isn't so much analytical ("They've really improved the line of their shoulders!") as it is grimly admiring ("Wow, I think I heard her hip pop from here"). We tune in to see a new outfit, to watch a new dance, and to see whether anyone falls down — the one way, incidentally, in which this series was a complete disappointment. Given how much we're all here for the spectacle, rehashing old dances was a surprisingly ill-considered way to start the finale.

But rehashing was the command, so John and Charlotte returned to the quickstep, performed to the surprisingly apt "Let's Face The Music And Dance." As opposed to, say, "Camptown Races" or "Little Bunny Foo-Foo," whose appropriateness would have matched the music choices in recent shows. John and Charlotte performed just as they did several weeks ago: elegantly and well, with few visible seams. With a little help from Patrick Swayze, who swooped in for a blink-and-you-missed-him cameo, John even managed to tame the more squirm-inducing parts of his persona and deliver exactly the charm his fans like to see from him.

Kelly and Alec followed by revisiting the samba that popped a strap on Kelly's costume two weeks ago, forcing her to muddle through while clutching her breasts as inconspicuously as possible. She did look better the second time around, and she certainly executed the final maneuver, in which she was flung face-down between her partner's legs, with substantially less visible terror. Still, she and Alec fell a couple of points behind in the judges' scores heading into the second half of the competition: a "freestyle" routine in which they could do whatever they chose.

John and Charlotte opened the freestyle portion with a routine perfectly plotted to capitalize on none of their strengths while emphasizing all of their weaknesses. An uncomfortable, phony-looking wiggle set to the oh-so-current "I'm So Excited" neglected John's smooth charm in favor of his awkwardly exaggerated mugging. The whole thing was silly and weak, but when the judges cheered and dropped three straight scores of nine out of ten for that odd spectacle, it was clear that uncritical affirmation was the order of the day.

When Kelly and Alec stepped out for their freestyle number, Kelly was showing about 80 percent of the skin she possesses, meaning she had learned a little about at least one of her strengths. Their routine incorporated a few lifts and spins that were fairly impressive, though Kelly looked tentative on several and may have tripped at the very end. Nevertheless, the judges rewarded Alec and Kelly with three tens. Three tens! A perfect score, and a head-scratcher indeed. The final dance of the series had brought the most surprising outcome yet. Yet due to the vaguely explained rank of audience votes, it wasn't yet clear who had won.

The obligatory filler between the performances and the final reveal of the winner was provided by a sequence in which previously eliminated contestants — Trista Sutter, Evander Holyfield, Rachel Hunter, and Joey McIntire — returned with their partners to remind us of… well, mostly of the reasons they were eliminated. Evander, in particular, looked even more uncomfortable than he did when he was getting regular practice, and it still appeared as if his enormous stomping feet might be a threat to nearby villages. Trista still looked like even touching the hand of a man not her husband made her feel guilty. Perhaps she would have been more comfortable if she had performed while encased entirely in plastic wrap.

And then, it was time for the big announcement. And the winners were… Kelly and Alec. A triumph of the underdog, a story of working hard to overcome great odds, and a fittingly silly ending for a show that managed to become a hit in spite of never really finding a consistent tone. It didn't seem to be a real dancing contest, as the judges hardly ever talked about technique; they talked about attitude and whether things were "hot" and who was the "king" and who was the "team to beat." They never really did, for instance, explain the rumba or whether "Endless Love" was an appropriate choice for one. At least on "American Idol," they sometimes talk about the singing — you know, the high notes, the low notes, the ever-present inability to remain on pitch.

"Dancing With The Stars," probably because it involved celebrities who aren't there to be entirely humiliated, often seemed to be more about storytelling than dancing. John was the elegant old hand with the wife-like partner nagging him to lose a few pounds. Trista was the earnest but ultimately reluctant young bride, Evander was the determined but hopeless galoot, and Joey brashly took the lead with his sweet, shy partner. And Kelly Monaco? Well, she was the dark horse. She was the one who didn't stand a chance, who found herself laughed at and counted out, but who managed to survive week after week, enduring even hilarious technical difficulties on her way to unlikely success. Her story was the only one that needed to end in victory, and end in victory it did.

Just as "American Idol" has a tendency to become a popularity contest based on who has the most compelling personality, "Dancing With The Stars" was a six-week tour of likable celebrities playing themselves in a reality show about their dancing experiences. Those perfect scores Kelly and Alec pulled for their final dance were patently silly, but their tale certainly earned high marks. They came, they stunk, they improved, they won. Not great dancing, but a great story indeed.

I am sorry John didn't win, but I am not going to boycott. It is a TV show, and not a real ballroom competition. They need ratings, and if it was a regular ballroom competition it probably wouldn't have done as well.

It was fun to watch. You can't expect too much from something that is pure entertainment.

I don't know about being "pre-chosen" to win...the fact is Kelly is currently working on a soap opera, which has the same viewing demographic as "Dancing" so she was bound to win the popular vote! I loved John and Charlotte, they were elegant and classy, Kelly and her partner were more sexy. Plus she was the underdog and that is also why people at home vote. (The same reason a few of the singers on American Idol stayed longer than they should have!)

I wouldnt' have been upset if thay had won based on the audience vote, but the fact that there were severl large and obvious errors in their routine and that the judges gave them not only higher scores than J&C, but perfect 10's, was what upset me. In addition to her mistakes, her lines were (as always) horrific- bent legs (check out that back walkover), arms splayed out behind her shoulders- ugliness! Trained dancing judges would clearly see those thigns and yet they still put them on top, and that's what makes me think ABC wanted to do a little extra promotion of one of their soap stars.

Well, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm happy that Kelly won. I really enjoyed watching her the last 3 weeks. I'll admit that I know nothing of ballroom dancing, but it's seems like she took more risks and had more difficult dances than John did. She worked hard and came a long way. Oh, and no I'm not a GH fan. I didn't have a clue who she was before this show.

Rose
07-07-2005, 05:17 PM
I actually watch GH and didn't like Kelly/or Sam (her GH character) but after watching her on Dancing, I like her a lot more.

I think the scores are relative. I think the judges votes wouldn't have been the same if they were judging professional dancers only. They were judging stars. I think all 6 did a great job, for coming into with not much experience. I know I couldn't have done half as good.

I guess what frustrates me is that this was billed as a dancing competition and the judges were supposedly there because of their dance experience and professional opinion. Why even bother with professional judges if it's not really a dance competition? Why not just pick out some celebrity judges and call it what it is? I realize that most people watching haven't had dance training, but I thought that's what the judges were for. It upsets me that in the end, in my opinion, the best dancers didn't win.

Sigh. I know it's just a TV show, but dancing was and still is a passion of mine and I hate to see it represented like this. Kelly did look cute her outfits, though, I'll give her that. :D

LeslieR
07-08-2005, 12:50 PM
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, so I can't really form an opinion about Kelly winning. I do know that apparently Kelly has said in many interviews that she did not have any choice in her costumes. Considering they dress her somewhat sluttish on GH, too, I believe her. Too bad ABC only thinks of her as a sex symbol.

Were the points cumulative? If not, I think they should have been. I think the fans voting is fine, but make it count for 25% of the vote and only one vote per person instead. Hopefully since this was just the first season they will improve the formula for next time.

...Monaco, O'Hurley: "Dancing" Rematch!

Not only can controversy be good for business, sometimes it can inspire a two-part special.

Kelly Monaco and John O'Hurley will return to the Dancing with the Stars ballroom for a so-called "dance-off" on Sept. 20, ABC announced Thursday. The results, based solely on viewer voting, will be announced in a Sept. 22 telecast.

Monaco, the daytime soap star, took the first round against O'Hurley, the former Seinfeld player, back on July 6 when she and professional dance partner Alec Mazo were named champs of the six-week made-for-TV contest.

Monaco, the daytime soap star, took the first round against O'Hurley, the former Seinfeld player, back on July 6 when she and professional dance partner Alec Mazo were named champs of the six-week made-for-TV contest.

Coming in the wake of early shaky efforts, Monaco's win was greeted with suspicion by O'Hurley die-hards who thought the show's elder statesman had samba-d circles around the competition with the help of partner Charlotte Jorgensen. One conspiracy theory had ABC plotting to put Monaco on top in the name of corporate synergy--the actress' day job is on the network's General Hospital.

At the Television Critics Association press tour last month, ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson told reporters the network was considering a Monaco-O'Hurley rematch. To the exec, a show returning the two rivals to the dance floor was a "great idea," not an admission that funny business had marred the initial results.

"The voting was not fixed whatsoever," McPherson said.

The newly sure-footed Monaco, meanwhile, refused to be tripped up by talk that she didn't earn her victory, and welcomed a rematch.

"Bring it on," the actress said at the ABC press conference last month. "You want a dance-off, come on up here. I'll give you a dance-off."

And so the dance-off: The Monaco and O'Hurley teams will compete in Latin, ballroom and freestyle. The 90-minute special will be filled out with "dance demonstrations" by: Ashly Delgrosso, Joey McIntyre's former partner; Jonathan Roberts,
Rachel Hunter's ringer; Edyta Sliwinska, survivor of Evander Holyfield's moves; and, Louis van Amstel, Trista Sutter's harsh taskmaster.

The results show, airing two nights later, will be kept to a relatively spare 30 minutes.

No decision has been made as to whether a separate results show will be part of Dancing with the Stars' second season. And, no, no decision has been made as to when Dancing with the Stars' second season will launch.

In its inaugural run, summer's biggest TV hit aired once a week, for six consecutive weeks, starting June 1. One dance team was eliminated at the end of each episode, except the first episode, on account of no team got eliminated until a lousy performance was at least one week old. (The logistics and math made a bit, but not a lot, more sense as the series played out.)

While Dancing's trio of judges will be on hand for next month's dance-off, they'll only serve as sideline observers, a la the Simon-Paula-Randy troika on American Idol. The Monaco-O'Hurley winner be determined by audience-generated online and phone voting.

Results will be final. Presumably until the next dance-off.

Kenny Mayne was just funny to watch, and it looked like he was trying so hard, so I give him mad props. I know he wasn't supposed to be on it originally, but if he didn't really want to participate, they could've found someone else who would've had fun with it! His reaction to the present his partner gave him was incredibly rude and immature. I really hope he gets voted off!

I wissed sections fo the show last night so I didn't get to see everyone. I;m really bummed I missed Stacey Kiebler as it sounds liek she was great.

Was anyone else super annoyed with Tatum? She kept interupting to the judges to make excuses ("I was nervous") and then she was clearly pouting during the itnerview. I guess I want to see Master P go home because he's a mess and his refusal to wear the right shoes annoyes me, but Id' love to see Tatum go to because her attitude sucks.

Hi!

Master P is so horrible!!! I don't understand why he can't just grow up and at least TRY to look graceful!!! I feel bad for my brother, because he's in love with Ashley and now he won't get to see her every week!!

I was very impressed with Drew Lachey (and even with Jerry Rice) The quickstep is an unbelievably hard dance to do - especially when those guys never even got to start with something easy like a waltz or foxtrot!! and they had to lead!!! They were awesome.

On a side note - I was looking for a message board on regular participatory ballroom dancing... but there isn't one - does anyone here ballroom dance? I used to compete in college, but I've just moved to the Long Island/NYC area and I am looking for somewhere to go dancing (not take lessons), preferably somewhere that doesn't require a partner, since my husband has no rhythm, and he's usually pretty busy studying for med school :( thanks!!!

Okay I'm HOOKED!

Master P. has an AWFUL attitude! He should go. His poor partner has to endure such a ROTTEN personality! I feel sorry for her!

Tatum felt psycho lastnight. She was GREAT last week. She looked weird in that green outfit lastnight and her attitude took a turn for the worse when she got some constructive criticism.

No doubt, Stacy is beautiful. I kept wondering if she'd make more money as a model as opposed to a wrestler. She SURE could do IT!

Drew looked great out there. I loved how they looked together. I also loved George. I thought he did the two step well and he just has a GREAT attitude about it all! Their my faves from lastnight.

The older woman who is a news caster (I forget her name) is also great to watch. She is a beautiful woman and she has a GREAT bod for a 50 year old! What an inspiration!

I am Hooked too :D and as much as I love Hip Hop/rap, I can not stand master P  good lord that man urks me. During all the interviews all he could do is stand there and look stupid. I understand that he has the persona to live up to but c'mon guy. It is "dancing with the stars" what the hell kind of show did you think it would be. If you don't want to dress, or do the dance steps then I say kick him off or leave already. He brings such a dark cloud over this competition

Anyway the second one I can not stand is Tatum O'Nell she bugs, she acted strange last night

I hope Master P gets voted off tonight, too. I was disappointed that he didn't get voted off last week. At least Kenny provided some comedy!

Tatum bugged me last night, too, but she didn't bug me last week. Dunno why.

I know everyone keeps saying Drew is doing great and the judges seem to like him, but I thought their dance last night looked very messy. I'm no expert by any means, but it looked all over the place to me.

Anyone else wondering what was up with the song they chose for Lisa? "Your Song"??? It didn't match their dance at all. I thought the Rumba was supposed to be sexy. "Your Song" is not a sexy song to me at all.

I think I'm rooting for Stacy. She is so beautiful and is doing such a great job!

Tatum O'Neil. I know she didn't do nearly as well this week as she did last week, but I have to say I was disappointed that she got the boot & Master P got to stay for another week.

And another thing - last Friday wasn't the results show only a half hour? I was surprised this morning when I turned on my TiVo to watch last night's results show & it said it was an hour. Then I realized the first half was a recap of the Thursday night competition show. If they're gonna replay everyone's complete dance performance on Friday nights before the results show, why should I bother watching the whole hour show on Thursday too?

jarm

I don't quite understand why they have to have a special results show on Friday. A quick five minute broadcast would be perfectly fine.

I can almost guarantee that people are voting for Master P. and Ashly because they like Ashly, or else people want to see Master P. make a fool out of himself week after week. I thought for sure they'd be the first ones to go and I'm even more surprised that they'll still be there next week.

Okay, is it me, or do Lisa Rinna's lips not look as big when they show the practice scenes? I mean, I know her lips are extremely collegen-filled, but I couldn't help noticing they don't look that big without the lipstick. Maybe she should tone the lipstick down or something...I don't know. Abby'sMom

P gets a large chunk (if not all) of the hip hop / rap music industry vote. That's a lot of folks. He has huge exposure -- I doubt even 10% of America could even tell you who Giselle Fernandez is. And honestly, a lot of the votes for true 'talent' in the competition are so split between the legitimate contestants that the illegitimate votes make a big impact. Also, remember all of his initial claims to be doing the competition in support of the people of NOLA? That's a real heart-tugger. Manipulative, but a heart-tugger nonetheless. I think it makes total sense that he's still on. Pathetic, yes, but it makes sense.

gayle
01-22-2006, 09:51 AM
P needs to go simply because he can't dance, and is making absolutely zero attempt to have the right attitude, nor to actually attempt to learn to dance. There's nothing racial about it.

I am sure he gets a ton of popular votes however, which really tells me that the show needs to restructure it's voting system. I mean, if it's really about dance, then score it according to dance, not popularity.

I personally would have zero problem if they pulled the whole popular vote out of it entirely, and just made it about the judges vote. I might not always agree with the judges, but at least they are qualified to judge Ballroom dance.

I SO agree! I was very confused when I first starting watching this program because I didn't understand why a "star" would want to win a dance contest. If it is a "reality show," they should be soliciting people in the REAL world who need some exposure with their dance!

Oh, ITA that he shouldn't be on anymore because he sucks. I was just giving some potential reasons as to WHY on earth he's still in the competition. :) And I still think his industry (not necessarily race; after all, Jerry's AA too) has a lot to do with why he's still there. But that's just MHO. Take it or leave it.

asksmd94
01-23-2006, 04:13 PM
Why does he keep saying that?

P is from NOLA and that's why he is probably saying it.

P gets a large chunk (if not all) of the hip hop / rap music industry vote.

Not, I would consider myself apart of that crowd and I don't know anybody that watches the show. Now, that's not to say those from his hometown isn't rooting for him. But, nobody even talks about that show.

I don't think it is fair to want something changed just because things aren't going the way you think they should especially when it is an established system.

I mean AI is the same way. The judges give their opinion but it is basically who is most liked not based on skills at all.

Has P's son been rumored to have any "problems"? I ask for a few reasons.

1) I don't know the extent of his "basketball injury", but George is doing the show with broken ribs and an assortment of other issues.

2) P filling in for his son seems like something that some parents do when their kids have problems, covering up.

3) You can't convince me that the show couldn't find a better replacement. Even with such late notice, I am sure that there are starlets, has-beens, and up-and-comers who would JUMP at the chance to be on such a popular show and get some air-time and publicity.

IMHO, No matter what you think of him (and I totally agree he cannot dance) you just have to admire the fact that P Miller came from virtually nothing, to become a rapper, business man, entrepreneur, actor, producer, and to attain a net worth of over 300 million dollars!! I'm not even close to being that successful and I had a thousand more opportunities in life than he did.

link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800021827/bio

"While he's never achieved the mass-market pop-culture visibility of Dr. Dre or Puff Daddy, in the 1990s Master P quietly became the biggest underground mogul in hip-hop, winning a fervently loyal fan base and building a multimillion-dollar empire (in 1999, Fortune Magazine estimated his worth at 361 million dollars) based on a string of platinum-selling albums dealing with the gritty realities of street life in the Dirty South.

Master P was born Percy Miller in New Orleans, LA, on April 29, 1970. Miller and his four siblings were raised in a housing project in one of the city's most crime-ridden neighborhoods, and after his parents divorced, Miller shuttled back and forth between New Orleans (where he attended high school and lived with his father) and Richmond, CA (where he spent summers with his mother). While Miller was tempted by the lure of the street hustling that was a part of life in inner-city New Orleans, he developed an entrepreneurial streak early on, as well as well as a passion for sports. Miller used his skills as a basketball player to earn a college scholarship to the University of Houston, where he studied business; in time, Miller left Houston and moved back to California, where he continued his studies at Merritt Junior College in Oakland.

In the late 1980s, Miller inherited $10,000 from his grandfather, and used the money to start a record store in Oakland, No Limit Records. Running the store allowed Miller to closely monitor what was selling in the growing hip-hop market, and in 1991 he cut his first album, Get Away Clean, under the name Master P for the tiny In A Minute label. While the first two Master P albums sold negligibly at first, he was quickly learning the rudiments of both the record business and the hardcore rap market, and in 1994, Miller observed that while major labels were shunning hard-edged "gangsta rap" in a desire to avoid controversy, there was still a large and loyal market for street-level hip hop.
That year, Master P dropped his third album, the more accomplished The Ghetto's Tryin' to Kill Me!, on his own No Limit Records label. Initially selling the album out of the trunk of his car, Master P avoided mainstream media outlets and instead promoted the album to independent record stores through word of mouth; The Ghetto's Tryin' to Kill Me! and its follow-up EP, 99 Ways to Die, together sold an impressive 250,000 copies without the benefit of national distribution. No Limit Records then signed a distribution deal with Priority Records, and in 1996, Master P's The Ice Cream Man debuted at number three on Billboard's R&B charts, despite receiving practically no mainstream radio or video play.

After No Limit's almost identical sounding releases became mainstays on the hip-hop and R&B charts in the mid-'90s, Master P next set his sights on expanding into filmmaking. In 1997, he wrote a screenplay about New Orleans street life called I'm Bout It, but was unable to interest a studio in the project. Undaunted, Master P financed the project himself, serving as producer, director, and star. When Master P was unable to find a distributor for the feature, he released it himself on home video through No Limit; while reviews were less than enthusiastic, I'm Bout It shocked industry experts by topping the Billboard home video charts, selling over 300,000 copies in its first month of release. Master P's next film, 1998's I Got the Hook-Up (which he wrote, produced, and starred in, but did not direct) attracted the attention of several studios, and received a theatrical release through the Miramax-owned Dimension Films, earning a respectable $10 million gross on a $3.5 million budget. Master P also began appearing in other people's screen projects, appearing on the HBO series Oz, playing the recurring role of "Patience" on the sitcom Moesha, and appearing in a supporting role in the film Gone in 60 Seconds.

When not busy with his other projects, Master P remains a passionate sports fan, launching an athlete's management firm and playing professional basketball with the Continental Basketball Association's Fort Wayne Fury and the NBA's Toronto Raptors. He also markets and designs men's clothing. ~ All Movie Guide

In my opinion, natural is COOL!! Tanned skin reminds me of skin cancer which we know is VERY unhealthy and uncool!

That was my point, too. ;)

Lisa is gross to look at. She's too skinny, too tan and wears too much makeup. I also don't care for her outfits each week. She always has on the outfit with the smallest amount of material.

I'm still rooting for Drew, but Jerry was so good this week.

I don't vote so I know I can't complain. Although tonight I was thinking about voting, but I don't know who to vote for. They were all so good tonight. The only one I want to get rid of is Lisa...but they don't let you vote for who you want to lose. Now that would be a good way to do it!

I was thinking the same thing watching her! Her outfits barely cover everything.

I voted for Drew! Go Drew!!!!!!!!!!!

Stacy has gorgeous legs. She is an incredible dancer and she and her partner always seem to be having so much fun!

George is adorable and I'm really impressed that he can dance so well at his age! He must be in great shape. I was so nervous watching his partner - I was afraid she was going to tangle herself up in her dress!

Lisa looks like something out of Planet of the Apes, but I did love the color of her costume (what little there was of it!) this week. Her dancing looks too meticulous and thought-out to me - you can see the effort she's putting into it.

I didn't like the beginning of Tia and her partner's dance, her partner flapping his arms to encourage the audience or the disco moves. Overall, I just didn't like this one.

Jerry's partner is so adorable (so is his daughter)! His natural athletic ability really helps him dance, I think - plus he looks like he's having a ton of fun. I really, really like to watch Jerry and Anna dancing.

Drew's popstar background is evident - he's a good performer, and I think he's got the best footwork of any of the guys. Also, I must admit that I was a fan of the sleeve-ripping trick! I think his partner is really cute, but I don't think she does "sexy" as well as some of the other dancers (maybe it's the hair? It's a really cute style, but it doesn't move much).

Wasn't really a fan of the all-group dance.

ms. inaba's comment about stacey being better than some of the pros was way out of line. not true in my opinion. stacey's great but her dancing & even her beautiful legs need some "finishing" technique. and she could use a little flexibility in general in her core area. she's not on a pro level yet. if i were the pros i'd be like "no, the b-tch didn't just say that..."

Though I totally agree with you, I actually watched the professional ballroom dancing competition that was held on PBS on Wednesday night. Compared to their costumes, Lisa was dressed like a nun. Zoiks how can women dance in costumes like that?:p

I find it fascinating that these stars have come such a long way (for the most part) from where they started from.

ha, great comment! yeah, i thought it was pretty insulting. can you tell which of the professional dancers she was referring to? i have no experience, so i can't tell which pros are better. they all look really good to me!

either way, i still like stacey. i think she and drew will face off at the end. that should be a good finale!

well, drew & jerry rice's partners i think are outstanding. i think the only other woman is george's partner, edyta. she's a GREAT dancer, but her feet & legs & form are not the best. but she's still a much better dancer in general than stacey.

i thought ashley was very good, though she overdid it a little for my taste.

i danced ballet for years, but 'm no ballroom expert. honestly, i don't really notice the men's dancing that much. drew is good, but i can tell the difference b/w him & the professionals, too, just like stacey.

If anyone, I'd say Stacey's approaching Edyta. Great compliment from Carrie, but no way accurate. But Stacey is very, very good, and *very* quick to pick up and at least partially master some of the minor movements. She was the only one who managed to shake her ass (and yay, it tickled! LOL) and she managed to incorporate into her walk, even. Theirs was the only dance that looked like a samba to me. Bruno cracks me up -- "weapon of mass seduction"? How long has he been waiting to use THAT one? LOL

But I still love Drew, too. I'm so impressed with his ability and he also (like Stacy) tends to get the minor movements correct. I really can't stand George -- he's got flair, sure, but he never does any DANCE STEPS.

I say all this like I'm an expert, but really I've just watched ballroom competitions for years. I am secret PBS geek. ;)

It seemed to me that she felt she had to make up for her partner - Master P barely moved, so she seemed to think she had to move enough for two!

yeah, she didn't seem quite as overdone when she danced with joey mcentire last season.

ITA! His partner does all the dancing and he doesn't really move. I think he's still on the show because of all the campaining he's been doing at senior citizen homes.

She really hasn't actually wrestled in a long time. She's a WWE Diva now, and usually parades around the ring in really short skirts as eye candy for the tons of guys watching. I can't tell you the last time I've seen her actually wrestle in a match.

Who was voted off?

Tia & Maksim. Although she wasn't the worst dancer, I predicted she would be voted off because she doesn't seem to have a hugh fan base. George is entertaining even if he doesn't really dance much, so the voters are keeping him in the competition. It should be interesting to see whether he or Jerry goes next week.

I agree - as much as I'd love to see monkey-face Lisa go, she is a better dancer than George. I can't remember which dance they're doing next, but I remember the host mentioning how fast a dance it is - I just don't think George will be able to keep up the pace.

Anyway, I wasn't a fan of Tia or Maksim, so I was glad they were the pair voted off.
