We could really use some of these, and I'm pretty sure I would be able to make it. My question is this: what can I fill it with?

I've never made one, but my initial thought was some regular pillow stuffing. Then I thought that might move too easy. How about something like rice or beans (dry obviously!) to give it some weight?

That's what I was thinking too, but we have dogs who like to eat anything that even resembles food.

We bought ours at Linens and Things. Are you against buying one? Seems like you might spend more money and time making one.

Good point about the dogs...mine would probably eat it too.

How about some stuffing like you'd find in bean bag chairs and maybe some marbles or stones to weigh it down?

I made a HUGE one last winter, after sitting in front of the door and feeling a DRAFT from under the door. I made one longer than the door (and thick) out of fabric that matched the living room and I filled that sucker with 15-20 pounds of rice. I didn't want to do sand because it causes dust and the carpet was new. Plus, I can buy rice at the grocery store.

Not only does it work, but it stays there during the summer (I don't really want to put it in the basement because I don't want it to smell musty). Yes, it's heavy to move when people come to the front door...but if someone tried to break in, they'd have a harder time getting in the door because of it! :D
