I know there are a few of us. Thought I'd try to start "our" thread.
I'm in north Phoenix and teach in Scottsdale. Anyone else want to play?

Hi rebeccasmommy!
I also live in north Phoenix! We'll be moving even farther north in a few weeks when our house is finished.
How old is your daughter? Mine is about to turn 1!

Hey ladies!
I'm down the road in Tucson. Rebeccasmommy, I'm starting my student teaching in August (Marana Unified school - Desert Winds Elem). What grade do you teach? I'll be in 2nd! Yikes!
Glad you started this thread!
Hugs,

North Phoenix here too!! I work in Mesa and am planning to go back to school either this fall or in the spring to finish my degree in Elementary Education. :D

You live in North Phoenix and work in Mesa? Sheesh, I don't envy that commute!! :)

chandy ~ My daughter is going to be 2 next Saturday. Yikes!!
sublime311 ~ I remember doing my student teaching! I'm going in to my 4th year of teaching, so it wasn't all that long ago. I student taught in high school choir and now teach 8th grade language arts and reading. Go figure!
Arien ~ OK, your drive is worse than mine! I drive about 30 minutes each way (my school is in south Scottsdale, like on the border of Tempe), but Mesa's farther. Ugh!
I'm so glad others wanted to join in! Yay!

Hi there!! I just moved to (just south of) Phoenix. I am in Maricopa - it's about 20 miles south of Phoenix, and work in Mesa.
I have 2 kids - a 12 yr old DD and a 2 year old DS.

Wow, a lot of people live in North Phoenix! Add me to that list.
My husband goes to school at the ASU East campus so he has a nasty commute to Mesa, but I work at a hospital close to us. If the housing market would slow down we would like to buy a house in the North Valley (we are currently in an apartment), but we need to see where DH gets a job after he graduates.

:( I feel so alone down in Tucson!
I find myself up in Phoenix for various reasons (airport, concerts, sports, etc) - do you all ever come to Tucson or are we a mystery to you?? lol
By the way, wondering if you have made it to the recently opened Kolache Factory?? My DH is a fanatic!

Where is Kolache Factory? I looked on their website, and they don't have any locations listed for AZ.
sublime311
07-04-2005, 06:28 AM
Hmmm, that's sooooo weird. They opened in Phx sometime last year, October I think. I had emailed the manager listed on the website to make sure they were open because we were going to be in Phx (they weren't yet so we didn't get to go). When I do a google search for "Kolache" and "Arizona" I find this:
Kolache Factory
10810 N TATUM BLVD
PHOENIX, AZ
85028-6055
Here's the number listed: (602)923-3181
Maybe it's closed already!? :(
rebeccasmommy

That would be close to me, I think. When I do a map on it, it's north of Shea, but I haven't noticed it.

Hi all,
I hope you don't mind if I join you- I am not officially an AZ resident yet, but DH and I will be moving to the Phoenix area over Labor Day weekend. Right now we are looking at the west side of Phoenix- DH's job will be in Goodyear, so we'll be looking around there- Avondale, Litchfield Park, etc. I've never been (went to Tucson last year for a couple of days)- we're planning on heading out there in a couple of weeks to house-hunt. Right now we are living in Northern VA and it is amazing to me that you can actually buy a nice single family home for less than 300k!! There are townhouses around us starting in the 400s! I am hoping to get a job at ASU, but we'll see.....
chandy
07-11-2005, 10:18 PM
Welcome nawsgirl!
I'm a big fan of the west valley! It has really grown up a lot in the last few years. Our real estate market has really been booming in the last year or two. Home values are climbing everyday, so this is a great time for you to jump in! I'm sure you'll have fun house hunting! Have you decided which realtor you are using yet? Let me know if you have any questions about our lovely city :)

07-12-2005, 08:44 AM
HI!
Arizona girl here too! I live in the NW valley (Arrowhead) and work downtown. (another one with a nasty commute!)
How's everyone liking the heat? It's supposed to be 114º today!
YIKES!
ETA: Not to scare you or anything Nawsgirl! 8-9 months out of the year, the weather here is lovely.
nawsgirl
07-12-2005, 12:14 PM
Thanks, Chandy! We haven't decided on a particular realtor yet, although we have been getting a lot of listings from Paul Warner- heard of him?
poohgirl, I am a little nervous about the heat! Everyone keeps saying that it's dry heat, like that is supposed to make a difference, but I have lived with humidity my whole life, so it's hard to imagine what 114 degrees of dry heat feels like :D
AKA Poohgirl
07-12-2005, 02:10 PM
Nawsgirl - don't be too nervous, you'll get used to it. That first summer (and September is still summer) will be hard, I think, but after that, it gets easier.
Yes, it is hot. 114º is hot, dry or not. But like everyone says, it's a dry heat. I went to NYC one year, it was 95º out and HUMID! I felt like I was going to die. In fact, I think there were some heat related deaths there that year.
So, it's different. But come October through April, you're going to LOVE the weather. I don't mind suffering 3-4 months out of the year for the perfect weather we have over the winter.
chandy
07-12-2005, 02:48 PM
Yeah, the heat really isn't that bad. Even in the summer it's a short drive to go up north to the nice cool weather. And the rest of the year is just perfect!
I've never hear of Paul Warner. But you know how many realtors are out there...it seems like everyone's cousin sells real estate! We just sold our house and used the May Team (http://www.mayteam.com/index.html) and we were very happy with them.

Yeah, it's about a 40 minute drive in good traffic, closer to an hour during rush hour (and longer if there's an accident on the freeway). I prefer working at the Mesa facility because all my friends are there, the work is steadier, and the supervisors are a lot less anal. But, with gas prices going up again, I'm going to see if there's any way I can transfer to a facility that's closer to home. There's actually one that's only 10 minutes from my house and I wouldn't have to take the freeway, but it's harder to get work there so that might not work out.
I'm glad to see there's so many of us from AZ! :D

Come on ladies! Let's get this thread moving!
Where are your favorite places to shop? I love to go to Keirland Commons or Desert Ridge. My absolute favorite place in the Valley to shop is Last Chance. I am a sucker for a good deal. I also go to Arizona Mills quite a bit in the summer, just because it kills a lot of time and it is nice and cool indoors.
sublime311
07-20-2005, 10:07 PM
Ugh! It's too hot to even THINK about going out to go shopping! :p
You all up in Phx have it even worse than we do in Tucson.
Stupid heat. Why do we leave here again??
AKA Poohgirl
07-21-2005, 07:07 AM
Don't ask me! I wonder that myself all the time. Now why do I live here again?
Oh yeah, because the winters rock!
Anyhow, I love Kierland Commons as well. Hubby and I like to go eat at PF Changs, and then wander the area looking at stores. In the winter, we'll stop and get a Starbucks, and look at all the gorgeous Cmas decorations as well.
Since I live in the NW valley, I usually just go to the Arrowhead area, but when I can, I head over to Kierland.
Arien
07-21-2005, 10:03 AM
I happen to love the heat, though my ideal temperature range would be in the high 70's to low 80's. Still, I'll take 115 over 50 anyday!
I usually just stay indoors at home when it's too hot or cold. I don't like window shopping. Looking at all the stuff I can't buy just depresses me.
However, I'm not really a city girl, so when the heat and the city life get to be too much for me, I head up north. Yesterday I drove up to Cordes Junction. It was 15 degrees cooler and gas was about 30 cents a gallon more! If I'd had more time I would have gone to Show Low, Snowflake, or somewhere like that.
sublime311
07-21-2005, 10:09 AM
Arien, you're smart to head to cooler parts! Even if it's just a weekend. We sometimes head up to Mt. Lemmon, but with gas so expensive, we've really been limiting our road trips. Bummer.
If I had a choice, I would LOVE to live in Flagstaff! I think I would pick Flag over pretty much anywhere in the US.
AKA Poohgirl
07-21-2005, 01:12 PM
I've never really been to Flag, if you can believe it. One day, I'll get hubby to take me up there.
Arien - you just take off for drives? How fun. My family has a cabin up in Heber, which we go to about once a month. I especially love it in the winter months, when you wake up and it's about 10º outside. Nice!
chandy
07-21-2005, 03:44 PM
We go out of town practically every weekend in the summer. We park a 5th wheel up in Forest Lakes, so it's just like having a cabin of our own! Can't wait to hit the road tomorrow...

I am a late joiner! I also live in the North Valley close to PV mall. I work in central Phoenix and the commute is about 20-30 minutes depending on the day and people
I usually always shop at Desert Ridge and Kierland Commons.

OK, ladies. This heat has GOT to go! Holy moley! Every single day that I pick my daughter up from daycare, the instant we walk out the door, she says, "Too hot!" And she's only 2, for heaven's sake!
But, I do have to agree - the winters are well worth it!

Yeah, I love to drive, and driving on the open road is my favorite.
I'd love to live in a really small town, like Snowflake. My ex-husband's grandmother has a cabin in Heber too (on Grey Squirrel road; do you know where that is Poohgirl?), and we used to go up there on average of once every month or two when we were married. I know she'd still let me use it, but I'd feel funny asking.

I just moved to Chandler a couple of months ago. Right now I'm working in Tempe and the commute is lovely, it's 6 miles each way. I'm still learning my way around, but I have to say that Kierland commons is not one of my favorite places. It's so crowded and all the stores are super expensive. Of course I also find myself avoiding the other malls because of parking hassles and crowds. I've found some of the places in the scottsdale airpark are great for furniture and accessories.
I'm 13 weeks pregnant, so by the time I get home from woork, there just isn't a lot of energy for exploring or even unpacking. Hopefully, that will change in the next few weeks.

Officially, I'm no longer an Arizona lady, having moved to Chicago in January, but it's the place I know best and I'm missing it! Despite the 114 degree heat - it's been in the 90s here, tons of humidity and we DO NOT have an air conditioner...can you even imagine??? I never could!!
I hope you don't mind my joining this thread. I lived in Surprise most recently, but grew up in Glendale and Peoria (Arrowhead area...used to be Peoria years ago, but now it's Glendale).

Have the monsoons hit yet?
We've definitely had a lot of rain and lightening these past few days, but I think the monsoon will official start on Monday.
I have to tell you that I used to ADORE the monsoon season, but my 4 year old dog is DEATHLY afraid of the barometric pressure change as well as the lightening. We give her some medication when the storm hits, but it's really not enough.. Anyway, now I sort of dread the monsoon season. Isn't that terrible? No self-respecting desert-dweller dreads the monsoon season! It used to be the only redeeming thing about summer for me. :(

Arien I don't know where that road is. I can make it to our cabin and back home, but I don't know which roads are which. We're back in the woods, dirt roads and nothing but trees, that's all I can tell you.
Forest Lakes is nice! That whole country up there is nice. I LOVE it in the winter, but it's nice in the fall too. Go up to Sunrise, to the ski resort, and ride the tram up in Oct, when the leaves are changing colors. It's very nice. We did that last year, I would certainly recommend it.
Everyone enjoying the rain? We got tons last night! It was awesome.

Can I join? I don't live in AZ right now, in fact we are FAR away. However, we're in the process of buying a home in the Phoenix area (Glendale) and are seriously thinking of moving there someday. The home is intended to be a rental, but we keep planning as if we'll live in it :)
I've only been to AZ once, which was last weekend. We were house hunting and loved the warm weather (107 I think). We stayed at the Hilton Squaw Point hotel which was very nice. We have friends in the Glendale area who are helping with the whole house-buying process (the husband is our realtor).
Anyway, I'd love to read-along on this thread to come up with more reasons to move out there!

Thanks sublime311! We close on our house next week, so aren't going to tell anyone (else) or decide 100% till then. But......we did buy appliances last night for the house that we wanted, rather than rental quality. We bought a Maytag Washer & Dryer (top loading with way tooo many features for me to understand) and a dishwasher (GE). I hadn't bought appliances in a few years and was surprised at all of the options and the costs. They had washing machines for $1400! And over $1000 for a dishwasher? Crazy.
We also picked paint colors for the house, we ended up going with the same ones we have in our house here :).

I love camping (check out my signature!). I've camped in Cottonwood, AZ (north of PHX) at Dead Horse State Park and lots of places around Tucson. I guess it would depend on how far you were willing to go. If I were starting out in Phx, I would want to go closer to Flagstaff. Maybe Payson or Prescott if not all the way to Flag. Hello ladies,
Well, DH and I have been here in AZ for exactly one month... We finally got all our furniture last weekend, so we've been unpacking, trying to hang up some pictures, etc. Question- is it usually this hot at this time of year?? I've heard from some that this is one of the hotter summer/falls, but then we were in Scottsdale last week and the trolley driver told us that this weather is totally normal and will last for another few months!! I don't know how much more I can take of barely being able to walk to the mailbox without feeling like I'm going to get heatstroke!!
My mom and stepfather were visiting this past week and we did a lot of fun stuff- went up to Sedona one day, which was absolutely beautiful (although the Tlaquepaque village was a bit of a disappointment), and over to the historic downtown area of Glendale, which I absolutely loved!! I'm kinda wishing we had looked at the Glendale/Arrowhead area since there seems to be so much there, but I'm hearing that they are definitely going to be building that mall out here in the Goodyear area by 2008!

Welcome to AZ!! And NO!! It's not this hot for another 3 months! lol Crazy trolley driver! Halloween is usually the turn around date. I had an outdoor October 16 wedding last year and the weather was PERFECT! I think we are having unusally high temps right now, but I'm guessing we'll be back to normal soon. Have faith!
I'm down in Tucson so I don't know too much about the Phx area - everyone else on the board is up there so they'll have loads to add.

Hey Ladies!
I am a New England native living in the midwest, and my brother has put me in charge with coming up with the perfect "destination" location for his wedding. My brother & his fiance live in AZ, and want a spot that wouldn't cost an arm & leg to fly to for their guests from AZ. I was thinking Belize---any other ideas? Thanks so much in advance!:)

OHHH Heather I have heard Belize is wonderful! I take it he wants it out of the country. Most places in Hawaii or Mexico aren't too bad to get to from AZ and Sky Harbor usually has pretty affordable flights. I want to go to his wedding if its in Belize alright? Sorry I am not much help! :)

Thanks Jen.
They do mostly want something out of the States---- with CA maybe being an exception. Most of the Caribbean seems too close to the East Coast, so that is why I am at a loss. I will still consider Hawaii, because they want to get married between Jan-Mar, so it will be somewhat affordable.

Freckles, I do believe that America West/US Airways will be starting to offer regular service between Phoenix and Oahu & Maui starting mid-December, so the rates may be pretty reasonable. Have you considered Mexico at all? Not to sound snarky, but it is pretty close and technically out of the States!

Merry Christmas Ladies!
We just got back from a quick vacation out to Arizona and loved the warm weather you are having. I think I even got a bit of a tan. :) We had a chance to see the house we bought in person (first time) and are so excited about our move. Only 3 more months!
I loved the outlets in Anthem and also the antique shopping in Glendale. We were even able to get library cards!
Anyway, I have a question for you ladies. Do you have water-softeners at your homes? If you do have them do you like them? Was it your choice or already there? If you don't, why? Any personal experiences with the pro's and con's of hard water?
Thanks for the advice!

honeygirl, I was recently told by a plumber that water softeners are really not worth it. They don't really remove that much from the water, and if you use the ones with sodium pellets, all you are really doing is adding sodium to your water. We don't have one, and probably won't get one. They also apparently require a lot of maintenance... We use a Brita filter and have a Pur filter on our sink, some people only use bottled water for drinking and cooking- it's really up to you. It doesn't taste too good, but I've learned to live with it.
Can any of you ladies recommend some good, moderately expensive preferably non-chain restaurants in the Phoenix area? My mom and stepfather will be visiting in a few months and they like to eat out, but we went through most of the places we are familiar with last time. Some places I was thinking of are the restaurant at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park and Roy's (which I know is a chain but has seafood, which they like). Thanks!

Thank you Nawsgirl! I'm not thrilled about having salty water, hopefully we'll find a way to deal with the hard water. We did a test in our current house (different state) and we have hard water here, so I figure it shouldn't be much different.
Only 2 more months till the big move! I've been looking into jobs in the Phoenix area and there are MANY! That's a good sign.
Have a great day ladies!

Sorry that I missed this earlier! I'm from Tucson. Ask me anything you want. In the meantime, this is what I wrote in other thread about what the pros and cons are of where we live:
Tucson, AZ
Pros:
Mild winter
gorgeous mountain views
Grand Canyon/Disneyland/San Diego/Las Vegas/Rocky Point all within short driving distance
excellent Mexican food
University of Arizona
AMAZING hiking trails
blue skies
summer monsoons
Mt. Lemmon
camping opportunities
off-roading opportunities
diversity of people and nature
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
our State Parks
our reverence for nature
our star-filled night sky (an astronomer's dream)
the uniqueness of our flora and fauna
our world class resorts and restaurants
VERY low humidity (most of the time)
HUGE 4th Avenue Street Fairs (3x a year)
Cons:
Very hot summer
at the bottom of the list re: state $$ spent on education
our lack of an adequate freeway system and traffic in general
ETA: two new pros and to reformat to list style

Thanks cr8nme and Calla Lilly! I'm thinking more toward American, Italian, French etc rather than Mexican, I think. Although he didn't say so, I don't think my stepfather is a huge fan of Mexican, or really anything spicy. Living in New England they eat a lot of seafood, but that's not so easy here!! I will definitely look up Carlsbad though since DH and I really like Mexican so we can go there ourselves....
Honeygirl, do you mind if I ask what you do, job wise? And where you are searching for jobs? Maybe I am just picky but I have been having a really hard time finding a job here, maybe I am missing out on a good web site or something! It seems like many things require you to be bilingual, which I'm not.... I'm looking for something administrative but I don't want to be answering multi-line phone systems which eliminates a lot!!

Nawsgirl - I'm a social worker/therapist. My favorite site to use for searches is www.alljobsearch.com It searches a bunch of different sources and puts them in one place.
My favorites that alljobsearch found are:
www.jobing.com (I like this one b/c it has LOTS of local companies, salaries, etc)
and
http://www.jobvertise.com (also puts together listings from other searches)
It also has the normal ones on there (monster, careerbuilder, etc). Give it a try and let me know what you think!

although, at first we missed the 4th Ave. area, and kept thinking that there must be more to Tucson. and there was!
one thing my husband is worried about is the weather. we're considering other states in the southwest & rocky mountain area, but tucson is def. the warmest of them all. just how hot does it get?

Oh, it get's really hot! Check out this site for average high temps:
http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/data.pl?ref=N32W110+1300+028820C
During the summer, it can get up to 110+. We usually get summer storms (Monsoons) in the evenings that blow through pretty quickly but can cause flash flooding. We get relief from the heat, but end up with high humidity in the evening.
We moved here when I was one, so I'm pretty much a native but I HATE the summers. I know PLENTY of Tucson transplants that love the heat and have no problems with our summers. It all depends on what you can tolerate, I guess. What they say about Arizona heat being a "dry heat" is soooo true. I've been to Houston in the summer so I know what humid heat is all about and I'm telling you, I would rather put up with dry heat ANY day!
Good luck with your decision and let me know if you have any more questions.
ETA: the effect of the heat on us is pretty minimal really. We all have air con homes (I HIGHLY recommend a home with central air vs. evap cooler), air con cars, air con workplaces, shopping centers, etc. We really only have to deal with the heat for short stints between air conditioners! The only problem would be if you need/tend to be VERY active outside during the summer. Most people exercise, do yard work, etc in the morning before it gets too hot. Also, you'll probably spend a lot more on electricity during the summer, but you'll make some of that up in the winter when you'll rarely need to turn on the heat.

Yes, we already have a house. We've been renting it out since last fall, and the people will be moving out in time for us to move in.
I'm not exactly sure where it is (in reference to other places), just that it is in Arrowhead, not far from a mall up there. We're moving from a cold and wintery place (midwest), so the sun will be welcome!

Another possible Arizonan here!
DH may be moved to the Tucson area. He has a phone interview on Wednesday, and it is all we have been talking about since he heard. He used to visit Arizona while he was in the Army, but that was a while ago, and he didn't live-live there. Anyway, we are currently in Western Maryland, formally from Philadelphia. I heard the weather is great(from reading this thread:)),but what more can you tell me? How is the pay/cost of living. I will need to get a job. Right now, I work PT in retail, and FT in medical insurance billing.
What areas are nice, which aren't? Which areas should we stay away from? We will probably get an apartment at first, which are in good neighborhood's in the Tucson area?
What is there to do? Where do you guys hang out? Where do you guys live(I will need friends :))
Thanks girls! I really hope this goes through. We had N. Carolina and Texas on our list as well, but no response...(from employers that is)

Ugh! I just lost a big long response I typed to you! Here's the short version!
You'll find TONS of info about Tucson here: http://www.city-data.com/city/Tucson-Arizona.html. This site has a cost of living calculator: http://swz.salary.com/CostOfLivingWizard/layouthtmls/coll_metrodetail_186.html
Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a medical insurance biller. I've worked for 2 of our major health care systems here (Northwest Medical Center and Carondelet Health Network), but there are several others, too (University Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center, Tucson Heart Hospital). I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a job. Also, there are 5 major malls here so there are plenty of opportunities at retail jobs.
I love the northwest side of town. This includes two suburbs called Marana and Oro Valley. If I were moving to Tucson knowing what I know, I would choose to live north of River Road. I would look for apartments northwest, north or northeast. Oro Valley is growing leaps and bounds and the mountain views are breathtaking.
The far east side and far west side of town are also fine. I would stay away from central and south Tucson. The northwest side is the "newest" and I guess is why I love it so much.
Please feel free to ask any questions - I'll answer if I can.
Good luck to your DH on his interview!

The Catlin Court shops are right around 57th/58th/59th Ave and W Palmaire- it's in the historic section of downtown. There are all these little houses that are shops and they are so cute. A lot of them sell housewares and have kept the kitchen and bathrooms so they can display stuff in there- I'm not doing a good job of describing, but it's definitely worth a visit. There are also antiques stores. My favorite is the Cottage garden (I think that's what it's called)....

I just joined this forum a bit ago and had not run across this thread! I’m a Marana/Red Rocker - out in the dirt.
I’ll write more later when company leaves (DH’s ex and her husband - believe it or not!) and I get rested up from all the festivities. (My ex comes for birthdays’ holidays, or just because, too!)
One of the things I love about Tucson. The price of groceries!!! (Well, that and the fact that, in the dead heat of summer, it actually cools off at night here.) ‘If it isn’t on sale this week, it will be next week’. Tucson is considered to be on of the most competitive cities for groceries and is often considered for trials or introductions to see how a new item is going to fly so we get great prices there, too. There are double coupons and triple coupons, both Wal-Mart and Kmart Superstores ad match. Fry’s gives senior citizens 10% off the bottom line on the first Wed. of each month. It seems that produce is almost always ‘in season’. If it’s really ‘in season’ it’s really cheap and if isn’t ‘in season’, it is still available nearly all year around. We eat good! Here’s a website to check out our weekly ads.
http://www.sundaysaver.com/ - scroll down to ‘Groceries’. Check out Albertson’s, Bashas’, Fry’s, and Safeway. The Food City that’s here isn’t in this list so see this - http://www.myfoodcity.com/
We now are blessed to have Sprouts in Tucson but the link on this page doesn’t go there... see this -
http://www.sprouts.com/flyer/view_flyer.aspx?id=66c59f5f-fed3-4590-9f86-1f40d83a8f51&desc=Now+Open+at+Oracle+%26+Magee!
And, of course, we can’t omit Trader Joe’s! http://www.traderjoes.com/new/index.asp
BTW, I moved here almost 20 years ago from Kalispell, MT and, get this - the first 2 summers I was here, I didn’t have AC in my car!!! I actually survived. I love it here, heat, rattlesnakes and all! Oops, hope I didn’t scare anyone off - but they are here and they are to be dealt with. I have this deal with them, they leave me alone and I’ll leave them alone...if they even scare me, they have to leave, preferably of their own volition rather than their last alternative... their choice and they almost always choose to just leave. The bottom line on that is that once they know they’ve been spotted, they’ll go on off rather than deal with humans or dogs, etc. My Cherokee blood is strong enough that I can communicate and feel that they ‘hear’ me and remember the deal they made with us long ago - and I hold them to their promise - it’s amazing.
Okay, gotta go, company is up and about and leaving this morning... They’re taking my granddaughter back to Phx. and their (and our) granddaughter back to Canada. They’re 14 years old, only child status, two weeks apart in age and get along great.
Sorry for the rambling on. I’m really enjoying this forum even tho I think I’m a wee bit older than most of you!

Hello warm ladies. I'll be leaving for AZ in only 23 days!!!
To keep this thread going here are two questions of the day.

I can't answer my own questions of course, but am looking forward to hearing what you all think.

QOTD 1: What is your favorite month in Arizona and why? Hmmm.. Can I pick two half months!? lol I love the 2nd half of October and the 1st half of November the best. In October, the weather starts changing and there starts to be a certain crispness in the air (especially at night). There is just hope of cooler days to come - relief in sight. Plus, in October, the 16th is my anniversary and there's Halloween, too. November is pure weather bliss! My b-day is on the 15th and Thanksgiving and Christmas are on the horizon. I just love that time of year!
QOTD 2: What is your favorite within driving distance vacation and why? Uh... I hate to be diffifult, but can I have three!? lol In no particular order:
1. Flagstaff - We have a family tradition of going up to colder parts for Thanksgiving - Flag is our favorite. It's such a beautiful drive (once you get past Phx). I have a spiritual connection (weird, I know) with Oak Creek Canyon between Flag and Sedona. I would LOVE to live there.
2. Pinetop - This is another of our Thanksgiving destinations. We rent a cabin (WAY in advance) and go to a movie and do other cold weather things. It's another beautiful drive.
3. Rocky Point - The beach is a hop skip and a jump away! It's a boring drive and you take your life into your hands on the drive (beware of people with United States license plates, they drive like MANIACS). The family of a friend owns a beach house in Las Conchas (which is a beach house community in Rocky Point) that we get to use on occasion. It's just a great atmosphere and there are sunsets to die for. Watch out for those pesky sting rays! Nothing says "Arizona summer" like a Dos Equis beer had in Rocky Point!

I'm here too, but I don't feel qualified to answer the questions since we have only been here 6 months :) I am quite sure that I will not like summer though!! I would have said that March has been OK but DH and I were at the Mariners-Rockies game yesterday in Peoria and we got rained and hailed on
As far as driving distance vacations we have driven to San Diego (about 4 hours) and Vegas (about 4.5 hrs) so far- we were supposed to go to the Grand Canyon last weekend but Flagstaff got a big snowstorm of 1-2 ft and some roads up there closed so we had to turn around and come back. For day trips we have been to Sedona (about 2 hrs) a few times and love it there, also been to the Biosphere 2 (about 2 hrs south) and Tubac (also about 2 hrs south) and enjoyed those too.
ETA: I'd like to go to Mexico but I don't know if it'll happen anytime soon. DH works for a gov't contractor and has to get permission before leaving the country, and then would probably need some kind of debriefing afterwards. To him, it's not worth it.....

Now it's the three of us. :) Nawsgirl, thanks for the info on driving vacations. I can't believe that San Diego is so close!!! I have a couple questions, what is the Biosphere 2? And what/where is Tubac?
I have so much to learn. :)

I have a couple questions, what is the Biosphere 2? And what/where is Tubac?
I have so much to learn. :)
Biosphere 2 is this giant enclosed space that has different climates and stuff in it- there's a coral reef, rainforest, etc. In the early 90s there were some experiments where scientists were sealed in there and they had to grow their own food, conduct experiments with the plants and reef, etc. They used to be associated w/ Columbia but the university decided to end the contract early (the guide made it sound like a breach of contract thing, but not really sure) and now it is in a pretty bad state since they are only doing the most basic things to keep it going. It is near to Oracle, AZ which is pretty much the middle of nowhere.. if you want to see pics, the web site is www.bio2.com, I believe.
Tubac is this little shopping area a bit south of Tucson- it's mainly Southwestern and Mexican style home furnishings. It's not big, but definitely enough to keep you entertained for an afternoon. I have the impression that you could get a lot of that stuff in Mexico for a lot cheaper, but like I said, not sure if we'll be going there anytime soon! :)
I have so much to learn too.... we're trying to branch out, trying new restaurants and stuff....

DH are moving to Tucson this summer and will be flying out to look at houses later this month. There is virtually no crime where we live now (never lock house or car doors), which makes the crime rate in Tucson look especially grim. Surely it's not as bad as that, no? In your opinion, are zips 85742, 85737, 85750, 85739 ok? Perhaps there are a lot of thefts at malls or the like in 85741 or 85746(south), which impacts the police stats for neighborhoods? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
sublime311
04-11-2006, 08:25 PM
I lived in 85737 which was WAY north in Oro Valley. It's a much more "rich" area and houses, at least until recently, were much more spread out, but I pretty much always felt safe (plus there is a cop on every corner there - watch out for speed traps - OV is natorious for those).
I used to work in 85746 (when I lived in 85737 and it was an hour long drive to give you an idea of how far OV is) and this area is near the airport and two Native American reservations (I worked in the health dept of one). There is a lot of new building out there, but I would definitely not want to live in the area - though I do have a bunch of friends who live there without major problems. Actually, I take that back - one friend just had her home broken in to.
If I could pick anywhere to live in Tucson, it would have to be Oro Valley (the only drawback is the drive/traffic to most places in Tucson). There are beautiful views there (the best, I think). My 2nd choice would be northwest Tucson (Oro Valley is even more north) followed by north and northeast Tucson. I would pick somewhere north of River Rd.
I currently live in west Tucson and love it. I would love it even more if we were further west. The homes on Speedway and Grant/Ironwood Hills west of Silverbell are beautiful and the views are spectacular.
I don't know all the zip codes by heart, so if you want to give me cross streets or a general idea of where the others are, I can give you my most humble opinion.
Tucson is a booming metropolis - with its size comes all the pains associated with it. I've rarely felt fearful for my safety (I can count them on one hand) and I've lived here for 36 years. I would say you should plan on doing all the things you would do in any other big city:
1. Keep your car doors locked.
2. Get a security system for your home (and use it) use security stops on your windows/sliding doors.
3. Keep your back yard secure (with a lock on the gate).
4. Be aware.
5. Know your neighbors.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm a teacher so I can talk to you about school districts, too. (Oro Valley is in Amphi which is a really good district in my opinion - lots of good schools in OV).

I just looked up a zip code map, so let me see if I can help with the other zips:
85741 - there is a mall, but also has older neighborhoods (right before the building boom, this would have been considered higher end), and lots of apartments. (This is Marana Unified School District - MUSD - my favorite school district.)
85742 - good one. I LOVE the schools here and the area is REALLY booming. (MUSD)
85737 - see previous post about Oro Valley
85750 - good one - it's a different school district which isn't my favorite, but the area is difinitely nice - LOVE the views here.
85739 - Couldn't find it on the map (this is the one I used (http://www.ci.tucson.az.us/planning/maps/city/wardzip.pdf)).
Also, Continental Ranch is a HUGE development in Marana (85743) - there are great schools there and the area is growing leaps and bounds around the development! I would definitely consider this area.
One thing to keep in mind is that some of the zip codes encompass HUGE areas of town - so that may mean that one street/neighborhood may be undesirable while two streets down is a great area. I live in 85745 and while some of those beautiful westside houses I was talking about in my previous post are in that code, closer to the freeway is more industrial with apartments scattered around. I like to think our home/neighborhood is on the nicer end, but still - on the books, it may not seem like a great area. Does that make sense? Just recognize that not every zip code is great all the way around - do your research and definitely check out the actual area before you buy!
I hope this isn't TMI!

Thank you so much for taking the time to describe the pluses/minuses of different areas, Sublime311. Houses in NW (85742) looked perfect online when I was looking at realty sites. When I cross-checked neighborhoods with the police dept stats it seemed that burglaries and violent crime were frequent in quite a few of the listings, but you’re right—we’re talking about huge areas. At the same time, I think I should just cross out 85746. But the houses looked so spacious and stylish and reasonably priced. I guess we know why. I hope your friend is alright.
I'm going to continue to look in N, NW, and NE including Oro Valley. My top choices from a week ago have offers--it seems like prices have dropped a little and houses are on the market a little longer, but people are still buying.

Hello ladies, I finally made it! I am an official AZ resident, well at least I will be once I switch over my DL and such.
We arrive on monday evening, in time for some beautiful hot weather. We're almost all unpacked and have been exploring the area. This windy weather is wild isn't it?

Welcome, honeygirl!! Yes, we had a dust storm around here yesterday since there is still some undeveloped farm land- not fun at all!! We were driving to dinner and could barely see 20 ft ahead of us!
Good luck at the MVD- it is pretty simple. You just need to go and do an out-of-state vehicle inspection (there should be signs, for the one in Avondale you just pull around back and there is a carport) and then go inside to get your registration and license. I was surprised by how expensive it was... over $200. Also, your driver's license doesn't expire until you're 65!!
eta: If your cars are older than 2001 you will need to get some kind of emissions testing done, I think, but I don't know how that works.

Welcome to AZ honeygirl! yeah what weird weather yesterday! Gets ya a little prepped for the wind of the monsoons, but we had no rain. Wonder what that was all about! Post some pics of the new place if you get a chance! We should have an AZ GTG sometime soon so you can meet some people!

Thanks for the welcome nawsgirl and sportyj! I'd love to go to a GTG, have they had one out here before?
I don't have any pictures of our house uploaded yet, but will post some soon.
Gosh, I didn't know that the DMV process was so expensive, and how weird to have your license not renew until age 65. How do they do photo identification that way? Strange. I guess I'd better take a good picture if I'll have it for the next 30'ish years!

I have a question for you Phoenix gals... My brother is getting married in May and his FI is trying to find a place for her and her bridesmaids to get their hair and makeup done. She found a place, Moments (at 44th St. and Camelback) and I wanted to know if anyone has heard anything about this place. Thanks for your help!
nawsgirl
04-18-2006, 12:01 PM
MMH I have not heard of it but looked it up on the Arizona Republic (newspaper) web site. Their beauty guide says:
"It's no wonder that Moments got the New Times' vote for best pedicure. They're good at just about everything: hair, massage, facials, waxing and special occasion makeovers. First-time clients of nail technician Sylvia Theiste receive a complimentary manicure with their first pedicure. An offer you can't refuse!"
Also, from www.arizonaspagirls.com :
"Consistently voted by locals as a favorite for hair and nail services, Moments Limited is a full-service salon known for its hair stylists and color specialists. Moment's highly skilled staff of independent beauty professionals can pamper you with everything from special occasion hair up-dos and makeup services to anti-cellulite body wraps and rain drop massage."
Sounds like a good place to me!! :D

We'll be house hunting in Tucson this Fri & suddenly there have been changes in the house market--a lot of listings & price reductions. While I'm hoping this is all for the better, my research is now only partly useful. Sublime311 or other ladies, is Copper Moon (85743) a good area? W Overton near the northeast part of Arthur Pack park (85742)? All info (of any sort) is appreciated. :)

As far as I can tell both of these areas are just fine. The Copper Moon one is located (I believe) within/near the Continental Ranch development. If so, this is a GREAT area. I would move there in a heartbeat. There is lots of development going on and all is fairly new. Great schools here.
85742 is also an area I would live - another nice area with great schools.
Good luck! I hope you find the place you're looking for!

I'll be doing social work, supporting foster parents. :) The job is in Phoenix, about 1/2 hr from my house, not too bad.
I am loving it here so far. I so enjoy having it be sunny EVERY day. It feels like summer and I love the hot weather. I also like the community (shopping, neighborhoods) and the mountain views. The only downsides so far are the mean drivers (yikes why are so many people so uptight) and the expensive gas prices.
Are there enough Arizona CC'ers for a get-together?
sublime311
05-01-2006, 09:23 PM
I'd definitely be willing to go half-way (Casa Grande, maybe?), but gas is too expensive to drive all the way up to Phoenix right now. Maybe we could plan one as soon as gas prices come down a little..? Of course, the Phx ladies could get together this time and I'll just try to make it next time!
Yeah, most Phx drivers are PSYCHO! No offense ladies, I'm sure you are the 1% that are just fine! lol I white-knuckle it every time I drive there (we regularly go up for sports games, concerts, and for airport stuff).
I hope you have a wonderful first day at your job! Break a leg!

We've been here in AZ for two years now. We live in Anthem and absolutely love it. My son is 27 months, and we're currently trying for #2.

Yeah, we are pretty bad drivers! Luckily, we only have bad weather for a couple hours during the summer nights! Of course, the storms always seem to hit during rush hour traffic. If you think WE'RE bad wait until you drive on Phoenix freeways!! The streets aren't so bad, but the freeways are SCARY!

honeygirl, glad you are liking it here! Hopefully our summers won't scare you away  . It's supposed to be in the mid-100's by the end of the week, which is definately hot for early June.
As far as a get-together, we could meet for drinks after work. Scottsdale seems to be a pretty central location. All in favor, post your recomendations for day and time.
We just got back from a heavenly trip to Hawaii. We took our son and he did pretty well. We slept alot. And lounged by the pool. If only I could quit my job and move to Maui. One can dream.....

Hi Everyone!
I'm gonna be moving from CA to AZ (Anthem) in about a month. It's gonna be a big step for us, but I think it will be a good move. We're excited!
Does anyone have an recs for daycares in the Anthem/North Phoenix area? I'm expecting DS#2 soon but will have to go back to work in September, so I'm trying to find some resources. The only ones I've looked into so far are the major chains like Tutor Time and Kindercare and they are quite expensive. TIA!

Yay, people posting in the AZ thread.

jjsanner - Glad you enjoyed your trip to Hawaii. I love it there, but may be biased since I used to live on Oahu. ;) How did the interview go? 15 minutes would be such a wonderful commute.
As for the gtg, I think Scottsdale would be fine, but I can't suggest anything b/c I've only been there twice. I know where the outdoor mall is and the indoor mall, that's all (so far).
shamocha17 - Congrats on your move plans and best wishes with the process. We just moved a couple months ago, so I know it can be overwhelming! Hopefully unlike us you hired professional movers. I don't have children (yet) so I can't help with your daycare questions. I do know that Anthem has great shopping outlets though! I can also recommend a great realtor if you are looking to buy in Anthem. They have lots of new construction out there.

Sedona B&B
I love the Wishing Well, but there are no TV's it is sooo romantic and the food is delish.
For a good breakfast and good deal try Cozy Cactus.
We also like El Portal and The Lodge for SUPER special occassions.
Hotels We always stay at The Hilton in Village of oak Creek if we do a hotel. But check out www.tripadvisor.com for other recommendations. I have stayed at a bazillion places and know the area like the back of my hand so if you let me know which area you are thinking of and what ammenities, price you would like I could definitely help you out.

Sportyj - Thanks for the quick reply! We're looking for a hotel probably b/c DH likes to have internet access (and ammenities). We tend to stay at 4-5* places, around $120-$250 a night. We also want to bring our little dog (italian greyhound) so pet friendly is a must.
I thought the Sedona Rouge Hotel and Spa looked nice (and pet friendly). They're less than a yr old, have you heard of them?
As for food, we tend to eat at cheaper places, like sandwich and soup restaurants.
And, we LOVE antique shopping. Do you know any good places?
Thanks again!
honeygirl
06-07-2006, 07:36 PM
We looked into the places Sportyj recommended and sadly they weren't available, but we'll try again. Especially for The Lodge & El Portal. I read that The Lodge was voted the best pet friendly B&B. :)
We have decided on the Sedona Rouge Hotel and Spa. They have beautiful rooms with fireplaces, down comforters, plush robes, etc. They also have internet access (wireless) and are pet-friendly, so they meet all our requirements! We found that the rates are MUCH cheaper through travelzoo.com ($149 vs $229), so we'll be reserving that way.
We'll post about it after we go.
Watch out for the dust ladies!

Honey - OH I am soo thrilled you found the Rouge, that is a really new one and I have been dying for someone to stay there and give a review of it! Looks AMAZING! And they are pet friendly? Even for big dogs? We bring pur dog everywhere!!!
As for places to eat, oh there are so many! I love Tlaquepaque for dining options and a cool place to eat there is The Secret Garden for fresh sandwiches, salads, and other neat menu items, they are not open for dinner though. Also in Tlaq is Oak Creek Brew it is upstairs right by Secret Garden, they have a great menu and yummy food (think brew/ grill menu)
You can also eat at The Sedona Golf Resort which has a beautiful view of the red rocks and is very affordable for really good sandwiches, burgers, etc. Lunch only though (my wedding reception was there) ;) It is accross the street from the Sedona Hilton, if you sit by the windows its the best view of Bell Rock in Sedona IMHO.
UM UM UM Of course pink Jeep Plaza has some yummy places to eat but I avoid that area at all costs (too crowded).
As for antiques you will have no problem finding stuff in Sedona, antique shops are all over the place. No recs cuz its not really my thing but I am sure you will be in hog heaven there!
PS - OH gosh for a HEAVENLY amazing meal have brunch or breakfast at Terrace on the creek at L'Auberge TO DIE FOR!!! (not expensive either!) Had my bridesmaids brunch there he he!!!)
http://www.lauberge.com/
Dahl and Diluca (sp) is awesome and Rene's in Tlaq is upscale too.

Hello ladies. We had a great time in Sedona and are already looking forward to our next weekend up there!
We stayed at the Sedona Rouge Hotel and Spa and for the most part loved it! The hotel is more upscale and the rooms were lovely. We had to change rooms when we first checked in b/c the wireless internet (a must-have) didn't work well enough in the 1st room. Since we brought our dog along we had a pet friendly room, which was on the 1st floor. I liked this b/c we had access to the grass and gardens (and a lanai also).
The pool area was comfortable, they had lounge chairs with thick pads and even bed type chairs (double wide). The pool was heated.
The restaurant was pretty good, we ate there the 1st night. They had live music which was kind of loud/corny, so we ate in the courtyard instead (ordered to-go).
Right next door to the hotel is a Safeway with a starbucks. This was nice for breakfast, but they also have a full deli, so you could eat there. The rooms had very small refrigerators, that don't get very cold, but they do hold water-bottles. The hotel gives out free water bottles, btw.
Our only complaint was the housekeeping staff, they were friendly but didn't understand us. This was a problem b/c I asked that they NOT clean our room, we didn't want Dante to get freaked out by strangers (he's had trauma in the past). However, they did clean our room, so must not have understood us. The front desk took care of our complaints and have offered to take $ off our next visit.
Here are some photos.

Very cool, sad to hear about the fires up there right now though huh? So did you see any bigger dogs there or was it mainly smaller dogs like Dante (who is adorable by the way!) Did they mind if you left him in the room?
honeygirl
06-21-2006, 05:21 PM
I saw dogs bigger than Dante, but that isn't hard b/c he is a shrimp. I'd say I saw medium sized ones and small ones. You could ask the hotel if they allow bigger dogs.
They asked when we checked in if we'd be leaving Dante in the room. We said yes, but that he'd be in his crate (which is what we do at home when we leave also).
They had a $25 pet fee (total visit, not per day). They had doggie treats in the lobby, I love that! ALso plenty of grass around the hotel.
The fires must have been near the hotel (a few miles N I think), but we left Sun late morning so didn't see anything.

I'm still doing the interview thing - it stinks. I'm down in Tucson, so don't know if you'll recognize these districts: I'm hoping to stay in Marana or Amphi, but I also have my application in at TUSD (my last choice). My ideal grade is 4th, but I have a feeling that I'll end up in a primary grade to start out.

We go to the Keg ALL the time over there, and Yardhouse, too. I should talk my boy into BJ's this weekend ;)
Kelli I saw that show, wish I could go, but I'll just be returning from a trip to London the evening before, so no peacemakers for me :( The friend I traditionally enjoy the peacemakers with is now living in WA, so I haven't gone in a loooong time :( I'm a little familiar with Tucson schools. A doc student I went to school with just finished her internship through I think TUSD. If you ever decide to move up to Phx, my district is the fastest growing in the states. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (http://www.fairmont.com/scottsdale/) is AMAZING! DH took me here when we were still dating. It was a major extravagance for us, so we didn't use the spa facilities (loved the spa gift shop, though) or golf (18 hole championship PGA tour course). The rooms were GORGEOUS! Room service (breakfast) was impeccable. The grounds were beautiful with a lake for FISHING in the the back!
Not sure if this will mean anything to you, but this resort was showcased in a Newlyweds (Jessica Simpson) episode. Jessica and Nick met some friends there. Nick went golfing and Jessica and her friends laid out by the pool. One of her friends had a baby and so when the baby started crying (heard though a monitor) Jessica went in to take care of the baby. Anyway, if you watch it and remember the episode, that was all shot at The Princess!

Hey gals! Thanks so much for the recs on the spas. :)
We've been here in AZ for 2 weeks and so far we are loving it. It's HOT as hell...but I must say not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Thank God for A/C. :D
Sushi
Now we're looking for a new sushi spot. Anyone have any recs for some good Japanese food? It doesn't have to be fancy schmancy. Just as long as they are kid friendly and not too overpriced. We went some place (too bad I forgot the name) and it was waay $$$ and the menu wasn't all that great, either.
Pest/Insect Control
Ok, another question for you Arizonians. How important is pest control out here? Since we've moved in we've gotten so many flyers on pest control. In fact, someone knocked on our door earlier wanting to see if we were interested in the service. Is it really that bad out here b/c of the heat? I'm clueless.

Hey Lelee, and welcome to AZ! Unfortunately the good storms seem to be staying southeast and not making their way up to us. I'm curious where you went for sushi... there's only one place I know of in Anthem called Off the Hook, it's off Anthem and Daisy Mountain. It's ok, decent selection. Not terribly sure of the price range, only been there a few times and wasn't paying ;) And I've seen kids there, too. Also, pest control is big in Phoenix. Lots of bugs. Up here there's especially issue with scorpions being so close to lots of yet untouched desert and the whole area being so new. They're very tiny and tough to see, too, so be careful, especially with your little ones. They blend in to tile like nothing else.

How is everyone doing? Do we have any new AZ ladies now?
We're towards the end of a kitchen re-model so if anyone needs recommendations (bad and good) let me know. I'm on day 24 w/out a working kitchen sink, but who'se counting? ;) Overall we've had some great workmen helping us out.
Anyway, have a great Halloween everyone!

ugh my daughter just deleted my whole post before I sent it!
Anyway, I was hoping to get some help from the Arizona ladies, especially those in the Phoenix Scottsdale areas. DH and I love it there but don't know much about the areas, especially good school systems. We currently live in NY and the way of life here is just not what we want. The cost of living is insane and DH barely gets to see our kids during the week. And don't get me started on shovelling snow. We are thinking of making a move in the next three years so we are just starting to research. So we want to start with areas with excellent school systems. If anyone could help, that would be great. Feel free to PM me if you do not feel comfortable posting details here. THANKS!

Hi Sal! Since I work in a school district in the Phoenix area I thought I might be of at least some help to you.... First I must put up a disclaimer, AZ's educational system as a whole is ranked 50th in the country :( It really depends on how you define an excellent school... Neighborhoods and districts can be very patchwork when it comes to socio-economic status which can very much affect a school's ranking. Also, if you have any kids who receive special education services, different states have different eligibility criteria and service methods, so that would be something to investigate before making the move. (That's my specialty, so if you have questions about that, you can PM me). You might want to check out www.greatschools.com It lists all districts as well as charter (there are TONS of charter schools in the Phoenix area) and private schools and you can see their state and district standardized testing scores for all grades for the last few years. AZ does require that a standards based standardized test in reading, writing, and math be passed for students to graduate from high school. Though if they fall in "exceeds" in all areas they can go to any state university for free, so that's nice. And kids can retake it every year to try to up their scores. My observation from parents who have moved here from the east coast is that we have many more students/teacher in the classroom. I'm in a "hyper-growth" district right now (fastest growing in the state) and there are about 30-35 kids per class. Plus attendance boundaries change every year because we open several new schools a year, so I'd be sure to check what the growth rate is in the district you're looking in. Some areas of the Phx metro area are growing crazy fast because newly built houses are so much more affordable than in many other areas of the country.
Those are the few things I can think of to watch for on the top of my head... Hope it helps!

Jen thanks, that was VERY helpful. WOW - 50th in the whole country??? that is pretty low! I wonder where NY is. I have looked on that other website you posted about but it is helpful to get the bigger picture that you just presented. We are going to do a little more research and then I probably will PM you if you don't mind. Thanks so much for your input.

Gilbert is known to have the best schools in the area...but I have not seen the most recent scores and reports. You will adore AZ been here since 2000 and I sure love it!!!

Sal, JeninAZ definitely knows a lot more than me, but basically the reason why AZ is 50th is b/c the state spends the least amount of money per public school student of any state in the country.
With that said, public schools in Scottsdale are probably nicer than most since that is a pretty affluent area- housing is a lot more $$$ than other parts of Phoenix. Many people I have met in the Phoenix area went to private school or a charter school....
In my opinion, I would definitely come and visit here both in summer and in winter before making the commitment to move. I lived on the east coast my whole life before moving here, and I hate it. I can't wait to move back east. It's just very different, and you really want to experience both seasons to make sure it's a good choice for you and your family.

Hi girls! I am so glad I found this thread. My husband has a job transfer coming up in about a month. He will be working in Chandler. We are thinking about moving to Queen Creek. We will be out there next week to hopefully find a place. Anyone care to share places to stay away from?

Hi Twyla, welcome to AZ ...well, almost, anyway :) Chandler/Queen Creek is a really nice area. And QC has a lot of very well priced new builds, I actually have two friends from work who moved there in the past few months. That area of town is pretty new, so you shouldn't have many problems. Definitely drive around the areas a bit, though. Phoenix tends to be very "patchy" and there are some really not good neighborhoods just a few blocks away some from very nice neighborhoods. And I highly recommend getting a house with a pool ;)

So I know this is very last minute, but...
DH and I are going down to Tucson for the weekend- he wants to see the Desert Museum. Anyone have any restaurant recommendations? I looked on tripadvisor.com and it mentioned a place called Feast, that looks really good, but I can't tell from their web site if they are an actual sit-down place or just carry out...?
Thanks!!!

Uh. I've lived here all my life and have NEVER heard of Feast! Hmm...
Depending on the type of food you want, I can recommend the following:
Terra Cotta Cafe (http://www.dineterracotta.com/)("Contemporary" Southwestern)
Teresa's Mosaic Cafe (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60950-d517980-Reviews-Teresa_s_Mosaic_Cafe-Tucson_Arizona.html)(Mexican - Oaxacan style)
Cafe Poca Cosa (http://pocacosatucson.com/) (Mexican Nouveaux)
Carrabba's Italian Grille (http://www.carrabbas.com/) (Italian)
The Desert Museum is awesome! You'll love it.

Thanks, Kelli! Those places look really good....
Here is the web site for Feast: http://www.eatatfeast.com/feast/
I believe it was rated #2 on tripadvisor. Looks yummy, but they call it "tasteful takeout" so I'm not sure if you can actually sit down and eat there (even if there are just a couple of tables) or if you HAVE to take out.
eta: I just went back and read the reviews a little more closely and it sounds like they do have tables- a communal table and some individual ones as well.

Hi ladies - I am looking for restaurant recs in the Glendale area. I need to buy a $100 GC to a nice restaurant as part of a Super Bowl package for a live auction. Can anyone give me some suggestions? TIA!

The Arrowhead area (a community on the border of Glendale and Peoria) isn't too far from the burrito stadium (aka University of Phoenix Stadium). Not sure how "nice" you want but they have many chain restaurants like: Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, Olive Garden, Hooters (LOL), Bucca di Beppo, Black Angus, Red Rock Brewery, Red Lobster, etc. I can't remember some of the other names, but there are a few other higher end restaurants in the same area (Bell Rd off of the 101).

I reccommend one to The Yardhouse. There's one in the new shopping center right at the stadium. It's a great restaurant with a varied menu and over 100 beers on tap. What more could you want at super bowl time?

Firebirds (http://www.firebirdsrockymountaingrill.com/) is a nice steakhouse in North Glendale. $100 would probably be a nice complete dinner for 2.

Hi girls. I need help. Hair help! LOL We just moved to Casa Grande about 3 weeks ago from Ca. I need to find a good salon. My hair is very long and many places don't cut it the way I like. I prefer to have my hair cit with a razor rather then scissors. I have no problem going to Phoenix, Chandler etc. But I honestly don't want to just go to the first place I find. I would rather go to a place that other people love. So please tell me, where do you go to get your hair done?

Twyla - Welcome to AZ! (i just moved from CA last July) :)
I go to Hedz Salon (http://www.hedzsalon.com/) up here in Anthem and I love my new stylist, but that is waaay too far from where you're at. In CA, I used to go to Regis Salon. I wonder if they have any in your area?

Twyla - Try Dolce in Chandler (in the same parking lot as the mall) also the Toni & Guy salon in Chandler Mall will do razor cuts. Love BOTH those salons. Dolce is a little more fancy and Toni&Guy is a little more edgy.

Has anyone ever been to Fucshia Spa (http://www.fuchsiaspa.com/home/)? It's WAY out on the other side of town but I would be willing to drive out there if their customer service is good. It's a pretty cool concept- almost like a gym membership. You pay $59 a month but that $59 includes either a facial, massage, and microdermabrasion. You can choose ANY kind of facial or massage and it's included in that $59. Then, if you come back within that month, any other service is only $45. It sounds almost too good to be true! Any experiences out there?

I am bumping up this thread hoping to get some recommendations for the Scottsdale area. DH and I are going to AZ and want to check out a few of the more upscale and/or unique restaurants in the Scottsdale area. Any recs? A restaurant with a beautiful view would be great, but is not necessary. TIA!

So many to choose from, where to start? :)
These two are actually in Phoenix, not Scottsdale, but they are my absolute favorite restaurants:
Barrio Cafe (http://www.barriocafe.com/)
Pizzeria Bianco (http://www.pizzeriabianco.com/)
I enjoyed Eddie V's Edgewater Grille (http://www.eddiev.com/) in north Scottsdale, and I've heard great things about Sassi (http://www.sassi.biz/index.html) (they would definitely have an awesome view!)
We are usually pretty happy with the dining recommendations in Phoenix Magazine (http://www.phoenixmag.com/food.html). You may want to get a copy of their dining guide before your trip!
Enjoy your visit!
