This one is just a garage, with the suggestion to add an oil pit and a drain and convert it into a home - $48,000:
http://tsmtbdpr4.pdclane.net/photos/2-12/122412a.jpg
This one is $80,000 for a 375 sq. ft. 1/1. The description just says "FIX UP."

Not sure if condos count. If so, this is our lowest:

Man...I wish I'd taken a picture of the lime green shack down by McDonald's and the river before a hotel was built there. It was so tiny it wasn't funny! It had a flat roof and couldn't have been more than 15 feet across!

Well unfortunately the cheapest non-condo house in my city lacked a photo. So this is the next-highest one, $15K more at $810K.
http://socalpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/46/hr95240346-1.jpg
4 bedrooms, 2 baths, built in 1970, 7,000 sq ft lot.
Here's the agent's description:
"Rare single story home in prestigious College Park North neighborhood. Elegant marble entryway opens up to formal living room with cathedral ceilings, large bay window and romantic fireplace. Spacious kitchen is filled with newer appliances throughout. Rearyard has a sparkling pool that is already fenced for safety. Side yard is SPECTACULAR. A private park like setting that has been lovingly landscaped to include fruit trees galore and so much more. A MUST SEE!! "

And because I can, here is the cheapest detached, non-condo home in all of Orange County right now:
http://socalpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/16/hr95252616-1.jpg
It's located in a bad area of Santa Ana, and on the market at $380K. That buys you 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 549 sq feet, on a 2,000 sq ft lot, built in 1920. Here's a nice tidbit from the agent:
"Don't miss this great stater home for first time buyers. It is close to schools, transportation, and shopping centers. 'Agents see remarks' "
con't
"Please note that garage is currently used as a family room. "
Nice! Heck of a starter home!

Its in the worst area of the city, but this is Des Moines Iowa. The "worst" area isn't really that bad if you are from other major metro areas.

We're closing on a house in a month, and the cheapest house close to us (actually about 3 or 4 miles away, nothing seems to be for sale any more in our new neighborhood) is $389k, for 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. We dealt with some pretty bad sticker shock, going from the 'burbs of Columbus, OH to the 'burbs of Chicago!

Okay, this is not the cheapest near me, but it's definitely under the average price, and is mere blocks from my rental. And it just makes me laugh (in a sad, horrified way).
This lovely home is located on one of the largest east-west streets in Los Angeles, ensuring that you will need earplugs to sleep and may at some point end up with a wayward Hummer in your living room. Fair warning. More information from CurbedLA (http://la.curbed.com/):
Described as a "Great opportunity for the creative builder/designer or ¿flipper¿!" this home has taken a price whack to the tune of $50,000 already. We have a feeling it has a few more unceremonious whacks to go. There's also this oddity: "Public records show a 4 Br 3Ba house. Currently there are 3 Br 2 Ba with a very large dining room and huge eat in kitchen." How can a home just lose a bedroom and bathroom, unless the kitchen has a toilet in it and a futon in that large dining room.

A helpful reader, or sneaky realtor, points us in the direction of this California affordable mini-residence. Featuring a kitchen, bathroom, a yard and a garage, what more does a single individual with a car and a taste for primary colors need. As noted in the listing, the 1927-built loft unit has no home owner association fees, unless you decide to pay yourself and then lord over the money, requiring yourself to pay annually for yard up-keep and repairs which take forever to complete. The only downside we can see to this little beauty is that truck parked next door with the Raiders sticker on the window. Bolt the doors.
What/Where: Studio/Loft, (part of town considered "transitional"- AKA dangerous)

Ha-- this made me laugh. We've had potted plants and lanterns stolen off our porch. We have to keep our patio table secured to the porch with a bicycle lock. Starting price of a home on this block? About $1.25 million. (We rent).

That house does look really nice! Maybe it's in an undesirable setting (like across from a highway) or has some weird defect that you can't see in the photo? Or maybe they just really want to sell it! I think it's super cute.

My zip code:
lowest: 64,900 buys you 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and .5 acres
Highest: 997,000 buys you 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths and .83 acres
My city
4,500 3 bedrooms, 1 bath. There was one listed for 3500 but I couldn't actually see a house in the picture so I didn't use it.
5.2 million gets you 6 bedrooms, 6 baths and 80.1 acres.
Now I know there are more expensive homes in our city, just not listed on the site I used.

This is a great thread!
This is the cheapest single family home in my town right now, according to Realtor.com --
http://homepics.realtor.com/image9/http/gardenstate/listings/large/046/v02/2432158.jpg
$285,000
4 bed, 1 bath... is it me or does that siding look a little "air-conditioned"?
This is the most expensive at >$1.1 million:
http://homepics.realtor.com/image2/http/newjerseymls/listings/large/061/2721895a.jpg
4 BD, 2.5 bath, 2 fireplaces... but if you ask me they'll never get >$1 mill for a house like that in this town. We all are just solidly middle class -- you go down the block to Belleville for the cheaper houses and up the street to Montclair for the really outrageous mansions.
for example:
Belleville:
http://homepics.realtor.com/image2/http/newjerseymls/listings/large/036/2718395a.jpg
1 BD, 1 BA -- $175K
Upper Montclair:

5 BD, 6 BA, four or more fireplaces -- $2.6 Million

It's not in the very worst part of town, but definitely a little rough around the edges.
The LA Times has just written that this area "is now in the midst of a revival." Owner started to renovate but ran out of money. This is in foreclosure status. Home being sold "as is." Bank will determine final offer. Shown by appointment only. Submit all offers by October 2.

This is the cheapest (non-teardown) single family home I think I've ever seen in this (fairly non-dangerous) part of L.A. Looks like it's a tiny place sandwiched between two large apartment buildings, and that pink bathtub sure is charming... but what a price! Maybe our market is finally changing?
$444,900
2 Beds 1.00 Baths
Bank owned foreclosure. Charming 2bed +1bath home. Hardwood floors throughout. Dining area. Private backyard. 2 car garage.

This is a corner lot and the adjacent lot is also for sale. The MLS listing suggests that a developed should purchase both and put up an apartment building.

LOL, I sent that last one to DH. He called our Realtor. The Realtor just called back and said they accepted an offer of $15k for the house. I do wonder what the inside looked like. The outside picture looks worse than it does IRL.

LOL, there aren't a ton of jobs here, and you'll make considerably less, but yes, house prices are MUCH cheaper. My relatives in Southern CA who own their homes are shocked at our mortgage. LOL, they were like - "is that some special ARM where you're going to jump up next year to like four times that amount?". Um, no. And, lol I wish we paid $10k for our house, sadly we bought it well before the market began to tank, so while we didn't pay top dollar, we certainly paid more than I would have liked. :)

This is the cheapest non-auction single family home in my former hometown. I got curious after reading an article in the local paper online. It's 4 bedrooms and 1 bath. I bet it comes with it's own crack dealer too.

No, there are no zeros missing from that number.

Cheapest in my hometown: $24,900. 3/2, 2000 sq. ft. Needs a new kitchen but the rest is ok. Neighborhood is not great, but definitely not the worst or what I would consider unsafe.

Read: The whole house is gutted. There is probably some (or more) termite damage if you are in an area where termites are. If it's warm, it's probably got a bunch of roaches running around.

And yes, it is missing a roof. Quality! My favorite bit of information from the listing is that it has no attic. Really?!
I should also add that DH and I considered buying this house back when it still had most of its roof...
