View Full Version : how empty is DC's crib...really?
i know the AAP says there should be nothing in it but i have stuff in mine (DD sleeps w/ a blanket, we have bumpers, she just started sleeping w/ a little doll she smushes on her face while she is falling asleep). she only sleeps in her crib for naps (sleeps w/ us at night) so maybe that is why i am so lax but i wanted to see if i'm the only one. oh, she is 4-months.

well, my DD is 12 months old, but she sleeps with bumpers, a banket, and about 4 or 5 stuffed animals...she loves them and talsk to them while falling asleep and for a little while upon waking up. She is certanily able, at this point to move them away from her face, so I don't worry. She has always had the bumpers, but nothing else until about 5-6 months I think...
We do use a bumper, but it's the mesh kind that can't be used to step up on (DD is 7 months old). Otherwise, her crib really is empty - well, except for DD of course. ;) I know, I know... I'm a stickler. But we all do what lets us sleep well at night, and for me, that's it.
LOL.
DS - 17 months - 2 blankets, a stuffed dog, a pillow, 2 books and about 10 pacifiers. I got rid of the bumper at around 13 months, when he started standing on it - I was afraid he'd use it as a step to climb out of his crib.
DD - 4 months - bumper, 1 blanket, 3 pacifiers, sometimes a puddle pad. I had 2 giant stuffed animals in there but once she started moving around, I took them out.

Ruby is 18 months old and sleeps with 2 blankets, quilt cover, pillow and I am not kidding, about 18 teddies! I tried leaving them out when I changed her bedding yesterday but she threw them all back in. :)

We have bumpers, and an elephant lovie thing. I read once they hit 4 months it was ok to put a blanket in there. She literally moves all night in her crib, so I am not worried at all. I will take out the bumpers when she tries to start standing on them like a PP said.

DD is 5 weeks old. She sleeps on top of a receiving blanket (so I don't have to change the sheets everytime she spits up in her crib), and there's also one blanket and bumpers. Once she moves around more, I'll probably take the bumpers out. If she's swaddled, then there is just a receiving blanket that she's covered up with instead of a regular blanket.

We have the bumper that came with the set, and a blanket. I tried to have an empty crib but there was a few nights she woke up screaming because her legs had got caught in the crib rails. The bumper is secured very tightly to the rails and tucked in the mattress (does that make sense?) so she can't pull it out or get trapped under it. The blanket is more for me than her, I think she's cold, she kicks it off:rolleyes:

I guess I'm really the only one, then, who has nothing in the crib. We used to have a bunch of stuffed animals at the far end of the crib, but once DS started to move around, I took them out. We never had bumpers. We used to have a sleep positioner, but that was when we swaddled DS and before he started to roll over onto his stomach and sleep that way. When he naps, he has an elephant lovey, but we don't put it in his crib when he sleeps. Not because I think he'd suffocate, but because I think he would play with it when he wakes at night instead of going back to sleep.

10.5 months - no bumper anymore, but 2-3 stuffed animals, a blanket, a lovey (little blanket with head on it), a few books and hard toys (for teething and to help her play in the morning to drag out "wake-up" time a bit).
ETA: I forgot about the things on the slats of the crib. She has a mirror, the Aquarium, and a kick-and-play piano. We took the mobile off when she began to sit up in her crib. Also, the stuffed animals are in the corners of the crib and she has never expressed interest in them at all.

I'm another one that has nothing in the crib. We had the bumpers in until DS was about 5 months and started moving around and he sleeps in the sleep sack so we don't need a blanket. I had thought about starting to give him a stuff animal to cuddle with but would be too worried.
ETA - DS is almost 9 months

DS is 3 1/2 mos-bumper only. I'm totally paranoid about stuff like this. I have gone to him and found him with his face smooshed up against the bumper, though. The only way I get any sleep at night is because of the AngelCare monitor.

DD had nothing in the crib with her until 3 months ago when she was 9 months. Now she has her boppy in there and 3 small stuffed animals.

DD is almost 9 months and we only have bumbers in the crib.
A PP mentioned a "sleep blanket". What is that?

DS is 15 months. We took the bumper off at 4-5 months and never put it back. He has 1-2 blankets, a binky, and a little praying lamb in his crib. Sometimes he has a book or another little toy too, but not usually too much stuff.

DD is 7 months now - She has always slept with a blanket or 2 and her teddy (who was until recently in the corner only). And maybe a a pacifier and couple of link-a-doo links. She moved from the pack-n-play bassinet to the crib for the night at 5 or 6 months.
We also have a bumper inside the crib and the matching quilt is attached to the side outside to block the light and A/C.
Does her Flutterby Music Soother count as inside the crib?
When she's awake, she sometimes sits there in her boppy with a whole bunch of toys and animals, but they all move to her changer (which we hardly use for changing now) when she sleeps.

totally empty. we had bumpers and a mobile and the ocean wonders aquarium until about 5 months. but one day I found DS playing with his face under the bumper so out those came. The mobile is supposed to come out at that time and at 6.5 months he was not sleeping well so I did not want any distractions in the crib so the aquarium came out. so it is just a mattress and a sheet. he is the best sleeper!

bumpers, and she's swaddled, does that count? Once in a while if it's freezing I put an afghan type blanket over her, it has a lot of holes, so it's my hope that if it went over her face, she'd be able to breathe.
Although the other day I came in and there were about 12 DVDs, six stuffed animals, a couple of magazines, a box of triscuits, and a can of soda on top of her, and she was sleeping happily. I guess big sister got bored and decided to "share" with little sister. :D

14 months and he usually has a blanket
He has a stuffed giraffe and a sleep buddy at one end and three teddy bears at the other. He doesn't really play with them, I just got sick of stepping on the bears on the floor. They get thrown out of the cribs if he wakes up and I take too long to get there. :D
He also has his bumper, which is VERY FLAT. My mom made it and was worried it was too fluffly, so she ironed it and it became a pancake. Oops. I think I'll take it out soon b/c it is always drooping since it is so flat.
I'm ready to upgrade him to a pillow. He falls asleep SO much easier in our bed, don't know if it's the matress, sateen sheets, pillows, whatever. When he can't be soothed we will put him on the pillow and pat and it really helps him.

Flat bumper, afagan like blanket (crocheted w/ lots of holes), a stuffed teddy bear lovey.
She is allergic to something, so some nights a boppy to help her breath.
DD is 9 mo.

DD will turn 2 on 12/17.
She sleeps with her favorite blanket folded up under her head (like a pillow), her 'blanket bunny' (a blanket that has a bunny head on it), 2 small stuffed dogs, sometimes her baby doll, and a queen-size down comforter :o
The queen-size comforter really is not as bad as it sounds though. Most of the comforter is outside her bed bunched up on the floor (she is in a toddler bed - which is basically her crib with the front side removed) so she is really only covered with a portion of the comforter.
When she was younger we never used bumpers at all, and she never had any stuffed animals in her bed with her until she was probably around 18 months and asked for them.

6 months old, and we have:
FP Aquarium
Tiny Love Mobile (removing soon)
Infantino activity wall - very thin and breathable so I don't worry about suffocation, plus he plays quietly with this for a while when he wakes up
http://www.infantino.com/Images/ToysSoft/150-803.jpg
Carter's Snuggle Buddy 'lovey'
2 pacifiers
I wrap/swaddle him in a big thin flannel recieving blanket.
Before I put DS in it for the 1st time, I removed the bumper, quilt, toys, etc. What a waste...

DD is almost 7 months, and we have the bumper, a pacifier and his bunny stuffed animal in the crib. He loves that bunny and I will find him cuddling it in his sleep or as comfort if he wakes up crying.

Bad mom alert: DD sleeps either in the pack n play in our room or our bed. In the pack n play, we have a couple stacks of clothes at the end that she doesn't sleep. The positioner is in there. I also cover her with a blanket because it seems like she'd get cold. I figure it isn't that bad because when she sleeps in our bed, she's smooshed against my boob and we have pillows and blankets...

we use a bumper. DS also sleeps with a blanket and his sock monkey. We have a mobile and the Ocean Wonders Aquarium there, too. He is starting to pull himself up and can turn on his aquarium himself. So I guess we'll ditch the bumper soon...

At almost 9 months, we have a blanket. Mostly just because he hasn't taken to a "lovey", so we've tried stuffed animals, etc. and he wants nothing to do with them. The bumper, mobile and aquarium all came down once he could stand in there.

My DD is 4 months old and she currently sleeps in a sleepsack on a sheet and that's it. I took her bumper out at 2 months on the advice of my pediatrician since she moves so much, and she used to sleep on top of a receiving blanket until she started grabbing it.
My daughters are 1 (12 months) and 2 (28 months) and they have nothing in their cribs.
I used bumpers until they could pull up to a standing position.
They sleep in sleepsacks b/c I am not comfortable having them sleep with blankets.

DS rolls around like crazy and lately he likes to sleep on his stomach with his butt in the air. Because he's a stomach sleeper and likes to smoosh his face in the mattress, we don't have anything besides the crib bumper in there and that is going to be moved once he starts standing up. We wanted to make sure that he understands that the crib is a place to sleep so we are resisting putting play things in there. So far so good - he sleeps as soon as we set him in the crib.

Matress. Sheet. Baby.
But only because he methodically tosses everything out first before settling in for the night ;)

22 months:
tag blanket
1-5 stuffed animals (some are chosen to leave the crib after a nap or in the morning, others are told to stay put)
dd
bumpers
sheet
the stuffed animal collection accumulated in there over the last 6 or so months. before that it was tag blanket, 1 stuffed animal, bumpers, sheet, and dd.
DD is 17 months and she has a bumper, blanket, 3 stuffed animals, books and her pacifiers.

DS is 22 months - he has his small blankie, pacifier, stuffed puppy, and sheet (obviously). We took the bumper off at 6 months and only started letting him have the puppy in the last couple months...

DD is six and a half months, and we don't put anything in her crib. She sleeps in a sleep sack. She used to have a mobile, but I took that down. I would love to have something she could look at in the morning when she wakes up. We're actually thinking of putting a ceiling fan in her room since she loves them so much.
I'm looking forward to the time when she can have a blanket or lovey. I'm still a little unclear on when it's considered "safe," although it definitely seems subjective. :)
