Having a baby means lots of gifts are going to be coming your way. What were some of the wierdest things you recieved as a gift?

My MIL went to a garage sale and bought me a used Avent Isis breast pump, and it was crusty.

Ok, after a story like that I'm lobbying to have these boards include this smiley:

Along somewhat similar lines, as a shower gift, a former coworker gave me about a hundred of those drop-in liners for the Playtex (?) bottles. But no bottles. Just liners.

Oh man that's gross! I think the weirdest thing we got was a bunch of girl clothes/accessories, even though eveyone knew it was a boy... Most people I know have similar stories to that one, so I guess it's not that weird.

What a fun idea for a thread! Lisa, I think you win the prize so far!

Marisa, sounds like your co-worker came in contact with a free bunch of liners and thought enough to pass them off to you as a gift.

The "strangest" gift we got was a Christmas Pooh bear. It's actually quite creepy looking.

He gave it to my son in April.

for my shower...i received a baby's first christmas outfit and she was due until february. and we weren't sure of the sex(in my mind i was) and it was very girlie!

can i put in the MIL christmas gifts???

DH took the kids to his parents on the weekend. they visited cape may and his mother fell in love with this christmas ornament. i was working and ended up being at work until almost 2am. i walk thru the door and put my purse down and see this ornament. it's a formerly alive blowfish with a christmas stocking on its head and it has a beard-ye god, what was she thinking...and do i really have to display it on my christmas tree???

We HAVE got to see a picture of this!! :)

At one of my showers a coworker/friend brought a ceramic/mosaic wall hanging that she had made for my DD's room. It actually looked really neat. Anyway, after the shower she said that she was not quite finished with it yet but brought it the shower so that she would have something to give. She took it back home with her and said that she would have it completed in a few days and would bring it back to me......2 1/2 years later, we still haven't seen it again. :)

Ya'll are cracking me up! I'm having a craptastic day at work, and this thread has totally cheered me up!

My great-aunt loves to do ceramics. She told my Mom that she was going to make a ceramic piggy bank for my baby shower. You're picturing a cute, fat, round, happy little piggy, right? Nope! This thing looks like an ugly, thinner/longer, "real"-looking, piggy! And she highlighted it by using blue paint! It's the creepiest thing I've ever seen...it now resides in the bottom of DS's closet, but it weirds me out everytime it "looks" at me!

We got this bunny dressed up in a dress that sang REALLY LOUDLY "little bunny foo-foo" and kinda did this skipping motion. It had the scariest loud voice, and one part of the song really sounded like she said "I am satan..." Yikes. My BIL took it to do target practice with:-)

This thread is so funny! I'm crackin' up at my desk.

My mom sent me a box of random stuffed animals after DS was born.....a bear w/ a Happy New Year 2000 on the hat but the hat was actually half chewed off (by her dog maybe?), a bear w/ Happy Graduation on the hat and a couple others like it. I could not figure out WTH she was thinking!! I laughed b/c mom has sent random stuff before but this took the cake. Come to find out that they were actually from my niece......she's 9 and since she couldn't buy anything she thought that she would clean out her old toys and give them to her new cousin. So, it turned out to be a sweet gesture but I still don't know what I'm going to do w/ a bear that has a half eaten hat?! :D

For my shower in June- I got a baby's first Christmas outfit from Old Navy & an Old Navy bear holding a Valentine's Day heart. All from my dh's first cousin. Obviously, "RE-GIFTS"!!!

i do want to add in a christmas present i got a few years ago from MIL-we were living in an apartment(thank God!) and i opened this gift-she bought it at a thrift store(she seems to be the queen of thriftiness-she bought silver high heels for our wedding from a thrift store and then rewore the outfit to SIL's wedding 14 months later). i don't know how i looked when i saw it, but damn, her ears might have been burning as DH and i were driving home. the gift is two animated christmas figures-cute? NOPE. the girl is okay...but the boy looks demonic and i call him chuckie. we moved in to a house last year, and being that i was very high risk with DS, christmas wasn't about all the decorating...so the "CHILDREN," as my DH likes to call them, haven't come home yet. he says we have to display them, otherwise his mother will display them and think we don't like them:rolleyes: after they visit...the children will be locked in the attic, as the boy is really scary!!!

My dad sent Helena some clothes for her first birthday. Fine. I opened the packages and they're all boy clothes and I don't mean khakis and plain shirt kinda thing that a girl could still wear and look cute. I mean camo pants, camo tshirt, brown windsuit, olive khakis with an orange and blue striped shirt. It was really bizarre. They all still had the tags, so I took them back.

My SIL gave us a Cherry tomato plant for our baby shower gift. And if that wasn't bad enough I was on bedrest and couldn't even get outside to plant it so it died anyway but I wasn't quite sure how I was going to use a tomato plant for a baby! She's a nutjob.

Love this thread! I also wanted to add that my MIL is the queen of garage sales and flea markets. When we went to the in-laws for Thanksgiving, she brought out all of these children's books that she's going to keep at her house for our little man. Sounds good, right?!? Well, I missed the beginning of her "story" surrounding the books. When I came into the room, I saw they were all used books, and I assumed they were DH and his sisters books from when they were children. I thought, "how cute!" I picked up one of the books, and I got ready to make a funny comment to DH about how this book must've been the one he would read when he was hungry...because the edges of the book were all chewed up! Just as I was about to open my mouth, MIL starts telling me how she found them at some garage sale! Ewwwwwwwww...All of the books had chewed up edges, and most of them had personalized notes in the front...so, I guess if you get bored with the actual story, you can read about who bought the book, for whom, and what occassion it was for.

Omg, that is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. I think I'm traumatized. Yech.

The puffer fish ornament is also pretty disturbing.

I can't think of any good bad gifts, but we just went to stay with my inlaws for Thanksgiving, and they left out some of DH's baby books for DS. One of them was about things that are scary, and a line read: "Sometimes I have a hard BM, and it scares me." WTF? My Dh read it and said, "I REMEMBER THAT LINE!"

This isn't as funny as some of the stories posted, but it falls in the "weird" category. My SIL's daughter received 3 huge goldfish in a tiny little plastic tank when she was born. What's an infant supposed to do with goldfish?! The last thing a sleep-deprived new mother (who is also recovering from a c-section) needs is 3 fish to take care of. And those poor fish could have had a much longer life if they had been given to someone who wanted them and could properly care for them.

My DH had a friend in high school who gave him (I kid you not) a baby alligator head. It was really disturbing. And this friend was a girl, which was even stranger.

One year before we were married, DH gave me a Xena Warrior Princess caldendar for Christmas (I was hoping for an engagement ring). We almost broke up over that!

I can't top some of these, but can I vent a little?
My MIL (bless her heart) sees us only twice a month, and tries to compensate by buying us too much stuff.
She buys us all sorts of ornaments and decorations - which we open up on Christmas day.
What am I supposed to do with a big fiber-optic Santa now, pack it up for next year?
And it's not one huge... animated... light-up... this-is-not-a-toy-keep-away-from-children decoration, its FOUR of them. To go with the 3 she got us last year. For our apartment.

Sorry to complain, it's just the amount of stuff is suffocating. I ohh and ahh when I thank her, but I just want to put them on the curb when we get home.

My step father gave me an animated, dancing, singing stuffed animal when he came to visit me in the hospital when Rachel was born. It was a skunk that played "Ladies Night" really really loud. He brought another one for newborn Rachel that was a mouse that dances and sings "My Girl". Funny thing though, Rachel eventually loved them both and danced her little self silly til the batteries died.

So my sweet step father replaced them with a Mexican chipmunk that sings "La Cucaracha"

Weird gifts this year (all of which came from my college brother who did his shopping on State St. in Madison)

DH got a wooden carrot ornament with dangly arms and legs.

I got a half-naked, two-headed wooden mermaid ornament.

DS (who is 1) got a gold lucky Buddha cat that waves its paw (battery-activated)

The funniest one was from a couple of years ago. It was DH's first Christmas with my family. The same brother did all his shopping at the grocery store that year. He won a soda off one of those soda-cap contests, so he wrapped up the cap and gave it to DH. Nice welcome to the family, eh?

My MIL has a tendency of bringing knick-knacks that she found in her house for DD. Like a mini flashlight (HELLO, small, easy-to-choke-on parts!), old matchbox cars, a giveaway paper fan, a broke-down battery operated dog that belonged to my 31 year old SIL, etc. One such present was a tschotke that my SIL must have picked up in Africa. It's a leather, stuffed camel with all sorts of decorations on it. Decorations were being held in place with needles. HELLO!!!!

For Christmas this year my mother-in-law gave me several pairs of underwear and socks. They are really ugly floral ones, too -- looks like the underwear I wore when I was six!

Not exactly a gift, but right before DS was born, my MIL sent a bunch of DH's childhood things to hand down. I was expecting sentimental things like a silver cup, a favorite teddy bear... No, they were mostly dusty, crusty old stuffed animals that the dogs used to chew on. GROSS! Those went straight in the trash.

Also included were some tapes from DH's room. When he saw them, he started to laugh so hard he almost cried. Turns out they were soft-core porn movies he'd taped off Cinemax on Saturday nights in junior high. He'd labeled them "Star Trek" so his mom wouldn't watch them. So essentially my MIL gave my baby porn.

My BIL sent my 2 y.o. a "Twister" game with a note saying that he had looked at gifts for kids her age, but thought she would enjoy Twister more. Umm, did the "6 and up" label on the game not give you the hint that the game might be a bit beyond her mental and motor level??

Oh, I forgot to post mine:

For DH's birthday, his sister gave him an electric massager (dr scholl's, I think). Sounds nice, no? Except we tried it, and it FEELS LIKE SOMEONE IS BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF YOU! I mean, really, it really, really hurts. My Dh is a big guy, and even he couldn't believe how awful it was.

The backstory that goes with this next one is that DH's godmother's gifts ALWAYS center on the fact that DH is Catholic and I am Jewish... one year she sent a GIANT crucifix along with a Hanukkah tablerunner, and last year she sent a menorah and a creche. This year she gave DD a little stuffed dog wearing a yarmulke and with a big yellow star of David tatooed on it's ear. My DH and I both agreed that it looked like a Jewish dog who had escaped Nazi Germany. On top of that, it had a big label on it saying "not suitable for children under the age of 3," ummm... maybe not the best toy for a baby, then?

This isn't weird, but it is certainly not our style...

A woman who works for MIL bought us a ceramic cross that says, "G-d Bless This Baby Girl." Problem is that our nursery is lavender and sage and the cross is very pink. Second problem is that while DH and I are Christian, we don't feel it is necessary to hang crosses or prayers in our home. We pray nightly that He might bless DD...we don't need a sign saying the same.

Mainly I think it is odd to give someone household decor when you don't know their tastes. What makes it worse is that MIL asked me on Monday how I liked the cross and if I planned to hang it in the nursery when we move. Well, I don't plan to. I plan to put it in a drawer and give it to her later on if she wants it. But how do I say that to MIL without sounding like a devil worshipping heathen?

My nephew received a dancing Boombah for his second birthday from our aunt/uncle (his great-aunt/uncle). We had no idea what it even was and it was quite interesting for him to receive it. Too funny, Marisa! Just what - please, tell me what - on earth are people thinking??? I mean, if you KNOW the kid watches the show or something, that's one thing. My guess is it was a leftover from their granddaughter.... Ah, well. The kids get way too much anyway!

ROTFLMAO!!!!!

I will admit that at my shower for my son, I got what DH & I refer to as Demon Angel. It looks almost innocent, but when you squeeze it this loud demonic screetchy voice from Purgatory bellows NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP.... over and over. I almost fell out of my chair in fear at the shower when I accidently activated it. I don't sleep well knowing it's still in my home, but am too afraid to toss it out...it might come back to get me!

One year before we were married, DH gave me a Xena Warrior Princess caldendar for Christmas (I was hoping for an engagement ring). We almost broke up over that! Oh, that reminds me of when my boyfriend got me a watch for my birthday (December 6th) after I had told him I don't wear watches because I always loose them and then for Christmas got me a mug printed with him and his friend (a girl who I was not jealous of) on it as a combo gift from both of them and said that he couldn't afford anything else because he spent a lot on the watch!
DH got a wooden carrot ornament with dangly arms and legs.
I got a half-naked, two-headed wooden mermaid ornament.
DS (who is 1) got a gold lucky Buddha cat that waves its paw (battery-activated) Oh, I'd love to see pictures of those!!
So essentially my MIL gave my baby porn. ROFL!!!!!!!!!

Boobah! - I didn't even know it was a cartoon. I just thought it was a freaky toy. My friend got one at a sale from a day care that was going out of business because when the lady played it (it lights up, sings and dances) the kids all gathered around it and were mesmerized. My friend uses it at the changing table to distract him while she's changing his diaper.

My worst gifts - They were all from my SIL who has no kids, so I cut her a little slack, but really! First of all, she has never, never given a gift that was age appropriate. HELLO! It's written right on the packaging! Ok, so the worst was a GIANT movie cardboard cutout of the cartoon movie "Treasure Planet." FOR A 7-MONTH-OLD who isn't even allowed to watch TV. I've never even seen the movie. And you you think I want to display this hideous thing in her room and take up all that space? I don't think so. At this point, she's 20 months old and would probably destroy it anyway - so on second thought...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v418/iamginaw/poster.jpg

She also bought my daughter a Disney Princess Dress up package that of course says, "contains small parts, not for children under 3 years old" ...for her 1st birthday. Oh, did I mention I don't like commercial character stuff?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v418/iamginaw/princess.jpg

Then for Christmas this year, she bought both my DD (18 months old at the time) and my niece's daughter (10 months old) each a giant scepter/magic wand type thing. It would be really cool for an older girl that knew what it was supposed to be and it does mesmerize the little ones with spinning lights. I wonder if those lights could contribute to epilepsy or something? But, in the hands of a toddler, it becomes a club and a weapon. My DD is ok with it in the confined space of my car but we have agreed that my friend's little boy, who is very much a boy, is never to even see it. I can just picture him running around the house clubbing people, animals and hard objects thinking "oooh, cool noise," until the ball on the end breaks into sharp shards with exposed glass bulbs and wires hanging out. Then, it's really an effective weapon. Can you imagine a 10 month old with this thing? It's taller than her and she can't even stand up yet...Oh, and the kicker is that she mentioned she got it from some guy who had some sort of street cart.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v418/iamginaw/sceptre-and-d.jpg

Oh, I just remebered the toy phone that she got her when the baby was 6 months old that made obnoxious noises and voices and she said, "Oh, I'm so disappointed it sounded louder in the store. It doesn't seem as loud now." ...LOUDER? Are you crazy? I'm trying to figure out how to make it softer! Maybe some packing tape over the speaker? And the stuffed cat the meowed loudly and obnoxiously at the drop of a hat. It was so annoying, that at her birthday party the kids kept setting it off and some adult put it in the top of her closet because they couldn't take it any more. About that one she said, "I like it because it's so easy to make it go, you barely have to touch it, isn't that great?" Yeah. Great.

Man, I'm laughing so hard I'm crying here.

Noah's been pretty fortunate with gifts, thankfully. Last christmas, however, MIL got him 2 christmas stuffed animals. 1 was a 3 foot tall reindeer, and the other, a giant santa head. For an 8 month old who doesn't care about stuffed animals.

Not baby related, but one year for christmas, MIL got me 2 ceramic angels. Ok, not only was I raised jewish, but now I'm an atheist. WTF?

iamginaw- I have to defend the magic wand.... A couple of my coworkers bought those for their lil girls and they absolutely loved it. Many of them came back for more colors. I bought it for my 4 year old niece who loves princess stuff and dressing up. She uses it and sings Bibbity Bobbity Boo.

The car thing is probably because it was a wholesale direct vendor. We have a company that sells stuff directly from the wholesalers to corporations and offices for dirt cheap (the wand was $5) and the profits go to support the DARE program.

You guys are too funny!

For Christmas this year, my MIL gave my DH a memory/shadow box. In the shadow box were about 5 pics... all of just her and him. Inside the box was a 2-page typed letter telling him how much she loved him. It really looked like a shrine to them and creeped me out when I saw it.

Here's the kicker... Know what I got? 2 self-help books, one of which was titled "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands"!

It gets better... My BIL cheated on his wife before they even had their first anniversary. They have been going to counseling to try to work it out. For Christmas my MIL gave my BIL the same memory/shadow box shrine as my DH got and my SIL got - you guessed it - a self-help book, titled "Setting Boundaries in a Marriage"! My BIL could even see what was wrong with that one.

This thread is hilarous!

For Christmas, my MIL bought my (then) 5 month old boys a gift basket of USED toys she won in an auction that they held at her work.

We received a onsie that says "When mommy and daddy made me they were just showing off." I read it over and over thinking I was missing something or reading it wrong.
hehe I love it. I'd put DD in that onesie. ;)

(it refers to how cute DD is)

My goofy sister gave my under-two-year-old boy a wooden flexible snake, kind of like this:

except this one was so crudely crafted that there were thin nails sticking out of every joint along the snake's body.

Our neighbor gave us the most ugly overalls I have ever seen. They are dark teal wide-wale corduroy, and written on the left leg in an ugly, printed-on, flaking, mustard-colored script, it says (and I quote): "Ha Ha baby. boys and girls are grate (sic)."

sue-bert -- we got one of those snakes from MIL! At least ours seems to be nice, like in the picture... but the tongue popped out right away (it's just a tiny piece of swallowable rubber).

Those overalls sound like the hilarious Japanese clothes/toys you can sometimes pick up at the dollar store here. I bought my friend a t-shirt a couple of weeks ago that had a rainbow and a little Japanese cartoon girl and says "So happy to moot you." We crack up at stuff like that. :D

My best friend and I are the two orchestra teachers in our township. This spring, we took the kids to Disney World on tour. Of course, the most prima donna, high maintenance, drama queen turned 18 while we were there. This girl has the biggest "you're not good enough to look at me" attitude. Now, granted, she can back it--4.0 student, amazing cellist, beautiful, etc. But anyway, it gets annoying after while.

So...we threw her a tacky birthday party. We went to the tourist trap cheapy shop near the hotel and bought the tackiest things we could find. She got an alligator head back scratcher, a little box with shells all over it, a snake that said Orlando on it, a thimble with gold and Mickey Mouse, and a cheapo spoon. We waited til the end 18 hour busride home when her hair was finally not "perfect" and gave all the gifts to her, taking lots of pictures. She thought we were the craziest stupidest people ever. Everyone else laughed histerically the whole time!
