View Full Version : Breast size after weaning

Okay DS is just about to turn one and I've slowly been weaning him. We still do a couple of nursing sessions during the day though. I do know I still have milk even though my breasts don't feel as full as they used to.
Here's my question-after completly weaning what usually happens to the breasts. Do they stay the same size or go back to what I was before. I'm kinda hoping they shrink a little b/c tbh I'm really not that comfortable with my big boobies. :) Poor dh I know he hopes they stay the same.
I also want to buy some nice new non nursing bras but I don't want to buy some and then have them not fit.
TIA

I have a friend who nursed for 13 months and in the last couple her DS was down to just one nursing a day. She says her boobs shrank down to nothing for a few months but then went back to her pre-pg size.
I nursed for 16 months and DS is now nearly 20 months. In the last 3 or so Aiden only nursed once, sometiems twice a day. My boobs haven't shrank at all.
You just never know. I'd wait to buy some new bras.

Thanks Shannon. Dh will be happy that I won't be running out to VS to spend to much $$ on bras.
Guess I'll wait to see what happens.

I nursed for 13 months and my boobs stayed the same size they were while nursing.

I nursed for 13.5 months and my boobs shrank for a little while and then went to normal size....however, I was also pg at the time so that could have and probably did affect things.

Mine are about the same size as they were pre-pregnancy but they look totally different--saggy and with loose skin (how's that for TMI!). But, and here's the big but, I was exclusively bf'ing my son and then I stopped abruptly. So my breasts were horribly engorged and got up to a high D (I started as a small A). FWIW, I bf for 10 months and it's been 8 months since I weaned. I figure they will tighten back up just in time to get pg again ;)
I'd bet that yours will stay about the same because you are gradually weaning. Enjoy bra shopping :D

I went from a full C pre-pregnancy, to a DD while breastfeeding. After weaning I went down to a D, and not quite as perky as before.

I'm so glad you posted this - I had my last pump yesterday and my finger, toes, legs, arms, eyes and whatever else I can cross are hoping that I will SHRINK these girls down - I was a heavy D pre-pg so I am expecting that I will join JRose in the sagging world (who needs a tube top when you can tuck them into your pants!). We'll see!
phart - as always - you make me laugh with your pictures!

I was a smallish B pre-pg, went to a largeish B while bf'ing, and then went down to an A when I weaned after 13 months (gradually). About 6 months later, I was back at B-- maybe a tad smaller than pre-pg.

Mine are a tad bigger than pre-pg size, but since I was not big to begin with, now they just look fuller and still mostly perky.

I was 34C pre-pg, 40DD at my biggest (whoa!), about a 38D throughout most of nursing, and now, post-weaning, I'm at about 34/36 C/D, depending on the bra. Still have about 5-8 pounds of baby weight hanging on, though. *sigh*
They definitely look smaller, though. I like having them back at this size. I actually didn't care for the double-D look on me. They're hanging a bit lower, but it's not bad.

Ok, so about how long after weaning did bb size regulate? DS is 12.5 months and we started weaning when he was 12 mo. I'm hoping to be done weaning within 2-3 weeks. I'm really looking forward to a visit to VS and I've got a GC that's been burning a hole in my wallet since XMas :D

Didn't take long for me, Bernie--maybe 2 weeks after total weaning?

Everything I have ever read or heard says that it's not BFing which changes breast size, it's giving birth and being pg. But mine got larger when BFing and have gotten slightly smaller since weaning, but are still larger than pre pg.

*reading with interest*
We're weaning, and I got money for bras from my mom for my birthday last week (also burning a hole in my pocket-I love that expression!) I'll be interested to see what size my bbs end up. I really hope they don't shrink, but I wouldn't mind if they tightened up a bit, they are a little saggy...
I guess I'll plan to wait 2 weeks after the last nursing session, then go crazy.

ez2luv - Nope, you're not the only one! Mine shrunk two. This is my 2nd baby too - and I SWEAR mine didn't shrink the first time. DH says it's b/c I've lost more weight this time and am smaller then before I was PG. I still don't like the answer, doesn't help that they're smaller! LOL. Wishful thinking that they'll somehow get bigger again - Sigh... but probably not :(
So you're not alone!

Thanks for your responses everyone.
Guess I will wait two or three weeks until I'm completly done before buying more bras.
My problem is also the whole sagging issue. Maybe in a few years when I'm done being pregnant and nursing I'll look into getting them lifted. ;)

Bumping for more responses...
I have a ton of clothes to give away-mostly shirts-and I'm wondering if I should wait until DS is weaned before I give them away or if it's really going to make a big difference? (I wore XL shirts before I got pregnant and now it's all XXL's.)

Leslie, even though I didn't wean at a year, I found that I dropped a lot of weight pretty naturally when my DS started walking -- and then running! :) I went down two sizes without having to try very hard. So you might want to hang onto the smaller-sized shirts for a little longer, just in case.

I agree with Marisa.
I was a 36 "full" D before preggo, DD in early pregnancy, went up to a EE while BFing. While I was in the weaning process, I gained a little weight. Then it began to taper off. DS has been weaned for over 2 months now, and I still wear 36D bras, but am just not as full as before. Shirts I wore while nursing are noticeably looser now.
As for the rest of the weight, any day now DS is going to walk and I expect the last 10lbs to creep away not long after that.
If you have the room, hold onto the smaller-sized clothes for a while longer. I found that between pregnancy, BFing, weaning, and being weaned I was all over the place size-wise.

Thanks ladies! I lost all of my pg weight and then some very easily (thank you bf'ing!), but I still have a ton more to lose. I'm certainly not looking forward to the walking days, but the thought of possibly losing weight by chasing him around is definitely exciting! I guess it makes sense that my bra/shirt size will go down if I lose weight.

I was a full C pre-pregnancy, was definitely a full cup larger while nursing. Now I'm down to a B. I should be a C-cup by standard bra measurements, but with the flabbier breasts I now have, I'm in B's. I have too much extra space in the top of my C-cup bras now so those bras fit poorly.

Resurrecting this thread because it's exactly what I was searching for. DD is only 8 months old, but we might need to wean a little earlier than planned for (my) medical reasons. My vanity is rearing its head and I am crossing my fingers that my bbs will not shrink. :( I was a B before pregnancy, a C during pregnancy, some unknown size the first few weeks of BFing (like 2 freakin' grapefruits!), and have been a C now for a few months. I didn't like the bigger boobs at first, but I've gotten used to them and really like the extra curves now. Please please please let them stay...
BTW, mine are also noticeably lower and "looser" than pre-pregnancy -- just more reasons why I wish I would at least get to keep the size!

I weaned my DD at 16 months and got pg two months later so it's hard to tell if they would have shrunk or not. As it was, my cup size stayed the same after I weaned and I am still wearing my ugly nursing bras (the ones that haven't broken by now!). Oh, and I weaned very gradually but I'm not sure if that would have an effect. It took us about 2-3 months to completely wean.

mine shrank after weaning DD and then went back to pre-preg. size about a month later...however I was PG with DS at the time, so that may be why.
I was a small B to start, went up to a full B when nursing, down to an A after weaning and then back to a small B...sigh. Now that I am nursing DS, I am back at a full B...I have a feeling they will shrink when I wean though.
The up side is that they arn't big enough to be saggy. ;)

Pre-preg - C cup
While nursing - D/DD cup
Now - small B cup
I got pregnant with DD while nursing DS still so I didn't really shrink at all in between weaning DS and nursing DD. DD weaned about 2.5 months ago and I am now a B which I am thrilled about (I always thought that my C's were just a bit too big for me.) But my new B's are pretty flat - there just isn't much to them anymore. I asked my personal trainer friend if I seriously worked my chest if I could be fuller and he said No because there is basically no tissue over the muscle anymore. They look good in a bra, but pretty sad without;)

I'm reading along with interest. . .
I am still BFing but can't wait to get ride of these sagging coconuts. I was a DD before preggo, F/G during pregnancy, I wear G right now in non-nursing bras and squeeze into large cut DD bras in a wider band width (going over DD size is sooo expensive!).
I'm really REALLY hoping they shrink when I decide to wean!!! Scary thought that they may not.

I went from a 34B to 36E  and at 3 months PP they are starting to deflate. Before I got pregnant I had really nice boobs, even though though they were on the small size...now they are super nasty and I get depressed when I see them in the mirror. My boobs were the only thing that got stretch marks when I was pregnant, go figure  My fear is that they are going to go back down to a B, but be all flappy so I'll have to roll them up to tuck them into my bra :p

Mine really shrank after weaning (34DD to a 34C) and about 3-4 months after that they returned to my pre-pregnancy size of 34 D. Although they are not nearly as firm, they are the same "size".
Pre-preg Full C
Preg and BF D-DD
Weaned still DD but just not the stay saggier and not as full. I'm pregnant again and started growing yet again. So we shall see after this one;)

i exclusively pumped for almost 13 months and was gradually weaning myself off the pump for the last two. i started at a nice c-cup, ballooned up to a dd-cup while nursing. like many others, i am a repeat offender, but strangely enough, my boobs didn't grow that much in my first trimester. i was a b-cup after the engorgement of weaning died down and am now just a fuller b-cup.
it's not so much the size that i care about, it's the overall appearance. yes, they are much less perky and firm, but does anyone have -- ahem -- nipple issues? it seems like my aeroleas (sp?) never shrank down to normal and that my "headlights" are always on. any bra that i owned pre-pregnancy that doesn't have at least a little padding is unuseable unless i'm wearing a thick sweater. it's been three months since i stopped pumping, so i would have thought the girls would go back to normal, but no such luck here.
anyone?

Well I haven't weaned yet, but we're down to once a day. My boobs were an A pre-preg, a full B while preg and nursing, and if I had to guess now I am a AA, yuck! So much missing my bigger boobs! Makes me want to get preggo again just to get them back!

Another member of the "smaller post-weaning" club. I was a 34 B before, and now more like a "nearly B". And I'm even pregnant! I'm looking forward to getting boobs back for awhile when nursing, even if they are only temporary.

I was a 32B pre-pregnancy, 34D while pregnant and nursing, and a 32B after weaning. They are not the same boobs as before though, now they are not as firm or perky. I do not think they look bad, just definitely not as good as before. I think being small keeps them from being too saggy.

I am still nursing DS who is 2.5 years old. But I am PG and have no milk, or at least that is what DS is saying. My breasts have not changed at all.
